This is the last week of This Is the Old Testament! Next week, we’ll continue our thematic overview of the entire Bible with This Is The New Testament. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book or two of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture.
The Book of Malachi: The prophet Malachi rebuked Judah’s sins by quoting their own words, repeating their own thoughts, and describing their own attitudes. As a motivation for obedience, Malachi pointed to God’s demonstrations of love for Israel, their spiritual and covenant unity with God and one another, and a coming day of salvation and blessing for those who fear Him.
How Malachi Fits Into the Story: Malachi is the last prophetic message from God before the close of the Old Testament period. Malachi reminds us that we have a great, loving, and holy God, who has unchanging and glorious purposes for His people. This God calls us to genuine worship, fidelity to Himself and to one another, and expectant faith in what He is doing and says He will do for His people.

God is faithful to his promises. He does not necessarily promise our preferred timetable, but he is faithful to accomplish his holy will that is for our greatest good and his glory. Praise God for proving his love to us by the ultimate sacrifice demonstrated in the gospel! He is faithful, we can trust him.
The people are getting rebuked for their very harsh words against God, they were saying that’s it is futile to serve God and the selfish and arrogant also the wicked will prosper. I know that my Father will silence the wicked and the prideful people, and getting the silent treatment from God sounds very scary and terrifying, and i certainly do not like silent treatment, that is the reason why i talk to God and praise Him all the days of my life

It’s a warning against moving away from our God and hope for those remain in His embrace. It foreshadows Jesus’ coming and the mercy we’ve received through His sacrifice and resurrection.
How does it also foreshadow the hope of Christ to come? By talking about the reckoning that will come in the future and that those who believe and walk in His ways will be saved.
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

His Throne is forever, and we have the privilege of seeing the OT, the NT, and still living in it…yet we can see Jesus returning soon! He is our soon and coming King!!!

Oh, I just checked in knowing ya’ll were holding me and my family up today. My son just got here, and others. I wrote up my thoughts–Praying God will use them! My dear Collin said on his FB post today, “although I am not a religious person, …appreciate prayers..Lord God pierce his heart today..and those that don’t know our God is a very real Creator of all things, and no it’s not a religion…it is a Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Pierce Christian heart that will be listening live from his prison. (my son will be reading his thoughts.) We want YOUR GLORY to shine today Lord…that you are worthy of praise and glory. Not just a “thing” people do to find balms.

Questions:
1. How does today’s reading offer closure to the Old Testament narrative? How does it also foreshadow the hope of Christ to come? I read somewhere that after Malachi, there was a 400-year period of silence where no new prophetic books were written. Honestly, silence from God sounds terrifying. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like silent treatment, it’s exactly why I talk to God and praise Him every single day to keep that connection alive. It couldn’t have been easy for Israel to endure centuries of quiet, especially since human’s impatience leads straight to frustration. So, what do we do when God seems silent today? We have to lean on the established foundations He already gave us in this Book. We rely on the hope and the promises given in this precious Book written by the hand of GOD (you will find Me if you seek me with ALL your heart). God can be found, depending on the seeker and how they seek. Reminding ourselves of those truths is how we trade heaviness for joy. I’m so grateful we live on this side of the New Testament. We aren’t stuck in limbo (praise GOD for this). You know what I really love, we have the Holy Spirit within us, that is God in us, we are not separated. We are not abandoned like orphans. We can communicate as often as we like. It is incredible. We have the big picture of what is going to happen (the book of Revelation) and especially our Lord Jesus’ Second Coming to look forward to.

2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption? A thousand years is like a day to the Lord (2 Peter 3:8). Can one wait a thousand years? Hardly. The longer a wait drags on, the easier it is to get impatient, bored, or just plain tired. The Bible notes that in the Parable of the Ten Virgins, all of them (both the wise and the foolish) fell asleep because the bridegroom was delayed. Human weakness and fatigue affect everyone when the wait is long. True readiness can help us to handle the long haul. It means building a resilient faith that can survive seasons of spiritual dryness, silence, or exhaustion. We must start now. The oil that the five wise virgins carry is a metaphor of inner spiritual reserve (the Holy Spirit, faith, the inner abundant life built in the secret place). They could not share that oil with the five foolish virgins because one simply cannot lend one’s relationship with GOD at the very moment of reckoning. Endurance requires us to cultivate our own hope in Jesus to increase our internal reserve of faith. It means building character through long suffering, self control, and delayed gratification, while maintain a lifestyle of prayer and worship to keep our lamp lit for the final call. The quiet work of aligning with God’s values, killing the desires of the flesh, renewing our mind, staying committed and obedient even in hard seasons will allow us to rest well in the coming of our Lord Jesus (“labour to enter into His rest”). So ultimately, waiting for redemption is about foresight (it’s a prophecy that has been proclaimed, but who will take heed?). Knowing everyone will get tired, but we must ask, have we made the necessary step of deep preparation? He is coming like the thief in the night, while people are eating, drinking, getting married, judgment will come swiftly. Let not the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things enter in and choke the Word, making it unfruitful.

You know after what happened to Savannah, even Pastor Greg Locke who lost his son to overdose, and our shes’s prayer requests regarding this issue of their loved ones and friends (SARAH NELSON, KIMBERLY Z), hearing the grief of loss and heartbreaks, let us unite in prayers to bind the spirit of addiction.

Please pray with me to command this demonic oppression to leave our children, our neighborhoods, our communities, and our nations. It will not steal any more lives under our watch with God’s on our side.

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today to stand in the gap for this generation and the young people who are battling the heavy burden of mental illness, especially those bound by the chains of drug abuse, addiction, and substance-induced affliction, along with their suffering families. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, we bind the spirits of depression, anxiety, addiction, confusion, hidden mental struggles and despair that have taken hold of our youth. We take authority over every assignment of darkness designed to steal their peace, destroy their minds, and kill their potential. We command every spirit of infirmity and mental torment to leave this generation right now. Loose your grip and go, in the name of Jesus. We pray the spirit of a sound mind be poured out by Your Spirit now upon those suffering.

Lord, we ask that You break the chains of chemical dependency. Where drugs have altered minds, caused psychosis, or locked young people into cycles of torment, we pray for supernatural rewiring, healing, and restoration completely. Restore their minds to soundness, clarity, and peace.
Pour out Your Spirit upon this generation. Replace their trauma with Your peace, their isolation with community, and their despair with a profound sense of purpose. Protect them from the traps of substance abuse and surround them with godly support, medical wisdom, and love that leads to true freedom. We declare healing, wholeness, and deliverance over our young people today.
We come together in agreement and lift up your precious people whom You have created in Your image for Your purpose now into Your Mighty Hand.

beautiful prayer. we lost my brother to overdose, and it has brought it fresh in my mind as we prayed for Savannahs service today. But you’re right it’s not just drugs that take your life. it’s drugs that alter your clarity, drugs that people can live on for life. I join you in praying for the chains to break!

Amen! I have not one but two nieces recovering from addiction right now. One was recently baptized and now walking with the Lord again. The other has no connection with family, but I see her fb posts on recovery. Yes, I was shocked to read that. She was an educator for years. I don’t know what happened but she did put a heart emoji on my comment that I was praying for her.
Prayer for all who are going through this. My friend does a ministry here in our city for the women on the streets called redeeming love. Pray for these women. Some have recovered, some have returned to the streets and some have passed. Breaks my heart.

In this unique promise, God assured His people that He would send Elijah to Israel again before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. In a figurative sense, this was fulfilled in John the Baptist (see Matt. 11:14; Mark 9:11–13; Luke 1:17). In a more complete sense, this will be fulfilled before the Second Coming of Jesus (see Matt. 17:11–12; Rev. 11:3–12).
