In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.
LORD OF ARMIES: The security, power, and strength of God in the face of His enemies
The Hebrew root word tsaba, or “a gathering of people,” is frequently used in the Bible to describe armies preparing for war. When paired with the name of God in Yahweh Tsebaoth, it reveres Him as being over hosts of angelic armies who gather in His name and serve at His command, with all creation subject to. “LORD of Armies,” “LORD of Hosts,” “God of Armies,” and “LORD God of Armies” are versions of this name.
LORD of Armies most frequently appears in the Minor Prophets, especially in Malachi, where almost half of the verses in the book contain this name in some form. During the time of the prophets, the people of God were living in exile in Babylon and then under foreign rule after their return from exile. They faced daily reminders of the presence and power of the enemy armies that kept them in captivity. They called out to God as the LORD of Armies, whose vast angelic hosts could deliver them from trouble. LORD of Armies is a name that assures us of the power of our mighty God.

Lord God of Armies, remind me you are in control and as forces of this dark world both seen and unseen wreck havoc, I know you are all powerful over these enemies. The battle is already won! These trials and troubles are temporary. Life eternal is coming soon.
James 5:4 reminds me that the Lord of Armies hears the cries of the oppressed. God isn’t just powerful, He uses His power to defend the vulnerable. That helps me trust Him more, especially when I see or experience injustice.
This name of God has had a tremendous impact on me because of the daily battles we face.

I have been “out of pocket” and caught up today. CeeGee’s posts and responses are missing. I got a got a response when I tried to send a message to CeeGee via Messenger. It said “Can’t deliver. User unavailable.” Does anyone know if she is ok?
Hannah prayed to the LORD of armies… I had never noticed that verbiage before. That is one of the best things about SRT… we learn so much through our reading.
.
Hope you had a beautiful day, sweet she’s. I did not use “Grace Day” to catch up. I did it today instead. Unfortunately, I get myself caught up in the trajectory that I’m so behind when I miss a day or two, that I think, “Why bother?”, you know? That is a bad policy, I know, but I get sucked in so hard!
.
Let us not grow weary and not give up! He is with us always!
Prayers please for my daughter, Emileigh. I won’t give specifics, but please, earnest, fervent prayers for her.
Lord of Armies, please work powerfully in Emileigh’s life and circumstances. Amen.
Yes, Lord we pray for Emileigh! You see her and know Lord, thank you Lord.
Praying for Emileigh.
God loves her, he sees her, he knows her…
Hugs to you, Sarah
Lord, you know the need. We ask that You intervene in the situation to bring glory to Your name

Lord of armies, in your mercy hear our prayers for Emeliegh.. whatever is going on Lord, be with her, heal her and bring resolve… Amen..
Urgently praying for Emileigh and for you dear sister! ❤️
Psalm 80:7 Restore us, God of Armies; make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.

In the Message translation of the Bible, God is referred to as “God of the Angel armies” in today’s scriptures.
“When paired with the name of God in Yahweh Tsebaoth, it reveres Him as being over hosts of angelic armies who gather in His name and serve at His command.” I am sitting here trying to picture this. As we pray, the Lord and all of his angels standing battle ready, to fight for us! WOW! This reminds me of a movie called “The Cokeville Miracle” based on a real events. School children were held hostage in a room for a few hours and a bomb detonated. The kidnappers were both killed, but All the children walked out unharmed, many of them describe seeing angels, being recused by angels, seeing angels surrounding the school. Many of the people came to faith after that.
Oh wow..! I want to see this movie. Glad to see you here Tami. I think of you often and how your brother is doing.
I believe this

Hello Shes
“When paired with the name of God in Yahweh Tsebaoth, it reveres Him as being over hosts of angelic armies who gather in His name and serve at His command, with all creation subject.”
How often do we hear in the OT where the Israelites small in number but great in faith are successful in battle against all odds!? There is nothing over which the Lord of Armies shall not prevail. As was His plan from the beginning. Victorious. Vigilant.
That part of the devo stood out to me. I had to stop and imagine it.
❤️
Yes, so true. The Old Testament is so valuable to know God and his power and character. I am forever astonished of how many people think it is irrelevant now, and only read the New Testament. How can we know his great love, mercy, and grace without His judgement, power, might, and Authority. And that he cared for his people then, and he cares now. Same God yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
I agree. There are lots of things in the old testament that make it relevant today. Covenants, promises, even health remedies.
I so agree with you, Rhonda. I could never figure out how only half of the scriptures are relevant. 2Timothy 3:16-17 says ALL scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.
Truth! He never changes..❤️.
For some reason, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, popped into my mind this morning.
I visualize the Lord of Heaven’s Army leading the battle. I remember singing this song in elementary school many years ago. May God’s truth continue to march on.
Same here, IE!!
Wow. That is an oldie, but a goodie.
Yesterday the sermon’s message was the fear of the Lord and it touched me deeply to my core. And today I saw it again, wow, “For I am a great King,” says the Lord of Armies, “and my name will be FEARED among the nations”. Don’t reduce God to a buddy. Some new verses that were given yesterday that I did not hear so often but for sure will memorize and meditate, “The fear of the Lord is God’s treasure” (Isaiah 33:6), “The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever” (Psalm 19:9), “He (Jesus) will delight in the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:3), “the fear of the Lord is to hate evil” (Proverbs 8:13). At the beginning of my walk with God, I tolerated a lot of evil in my life, in my circle of friends and families, of behaviors, of jokes that are disrespectful, even cuss words, and that corrupted my character and thinking. God was not present strongly. I did not understand why. Though I went to church and was committed to Him, but He was not around for years and years. I was very frustrated. Now I understood it was because of sin tolerating. I was supposed to HATE sin, not just dislike, let alone tolerate and keep quiet standing next to it. After years and years of “cleaning” the house, of cutting ties to evil, of saying no, of leaving the crowd to pursue the holiness of God, for without holiness, no one will see God, I feel the presence of God so strong and His manifested power and leading in the navigating of life. Pursue holiness and the fear of the Lord, you will see God. Holiness and reverence is the way to the Lord. Be blessed dear sisters.
Mercy, I too struggled with the same. But God… he continued to remind me that he cannot be tolerated. I am grateful to say that having cut those things out has made a huge difference in my relationship with the Lord.
He is so Awesome! We don’t need those other things. Praise be to God!
Dear Mercy – I totally understand what you are saying. I too grew up in church, but surrounded by sinful behavior being accepted. I gringe now when I hear a crude joke, etc.
Also thank you for the verses you posted. I’m going to write those down!
Yes. I kinda cringe when I hear him address as Daddy, I would rather say Father. But that’s just me because I do have a fear of God in a reverent way. He is Holy and Almighty, although he is loving as well. Be we must try to live holy, and that has been totally sidestep in this “Christian” day. I need to be a Christ follower listening to my Father. hating sin, and not downplaying it or renaming it.
All in, not half in, will bring and release us to truly see the Holiness of God .
AMEN.
.
Hugs, Mercy..❤️
We often feel like we’re fighting battles on our own—wrestling with fear, doubt, exhaustion, or spiritual attack. But Lord of Armies means we’re not alone. We serve a God who fights for us, goes before us, and never loses a battle.
Let this name remind you: God is both near in your struggles and mighty over your circumstances. Honor Him with your life—not just with words, but with wholehearted trust and worship.

The phrase “The Lord of Angel Armies” has been popping up all year for me! What a great reminder of how powerful our God is and who else is fighting our battles with Him!
Praying for all! Have a blessed Monday!
The God who see’s. There’s a beautiful song by Nicole C Mullins with that exact name. During those first few months of my separation I sought the counsel and comfort of a few godly women who gave me not only comfort but godly wisdom. One of them recommended this beautiful song. Give it listen. I’m working today and tomorrow. They asked if I could come in and I said yes, so I’m a little tired this morning. Happy Monday sweet She’s.
The old familiar hymn, “I Sing The Mighty Power Of God” comes to mind as I read this devotional.
.
The LORD of Armies is mentioned 24 times in Malachi alone! (if I counted right :-) )
.
What a comfort it is to know and be reminded of God’s mighty power and of His armies of angels who can deliver us from our troubles.
.
What a Mighty God we serve!

I love Hannah’s story. It encourages me to know that I can pray with boldness before the Lord of Armies and He will answer me. We can pray deep, desperate, faith-filled prayers knowing that our God is not powerless. He has the supreme authority and power over earthly and heavenly things.
Amen & Amen, SC!!
Amen!
Totally! Amen! ❤️

The Lord of Armies
“the people of God were living in exile in Babylon and then under foreign rule after their return from exile. They faced daily reminders of the presence and power of the enemy armies that kept them in captivity. They called out to God as the LORD of Armies, whose vast angelic hosts could deliver them from trouble. LORD of Armies is a name that assures us of the power of our mighty God.
We may seem far removed in America from this thought, especially our young ones under 50 that have not known war in a personal and close way. But our older relatives still remember. It’s terrifying. I can’t imagine running to a shelter and sitting in fear, or going to battle with a gun to face others with guns. But war with rage on with nations. As we see in a real way today. But the war has always been around us. The Spiritual war- the angels against the demons, good against evil, light vs. dark.
We don’t fight against flesh and blood, although we do…but, Paul says it is the Spiritual war that matters. Turn our eyes from the present strife in our lives and know, we have a Lord of Armies that is fighting for his people in. it. All. Every battle, (sickness, financial, housing, loss) every cry out to Him, every step of every day. He is in it with us,
for us.
We can cry out this same prayer as Hannah “Lord of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant’s affliction, remember and not forget me, and give…”
He hears his daughters cries!
“This is why you are great, Lord God. There is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, as all we have heard confirms. ” Amen and Amen.
When life is hitting us hard- pray
Restore us, God of Armies;
make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.”
The “outcry will reach His ears!”
He hears the prayers of his people, how wonderful that we only have that through Jesus Christ, that tore the veil to give us access to his ear.
Lord let us look beyond our little world, which granted, is tough and trying–but keep our eyes on the forever kingdom, which you will sit on your throne forever and ever. You have already won, may we know it to our very bones with no fear!! You have equipped us for the battle, may we not grow weak! We HAVE the weapon, and the armor!! Your word and truth, your peace, our faith, and of course the helmet of Salvation!! We are sold out, surrendered, and ready to be BOLD for and with you! Lord of Armies, empower us!
Amen!
AMEN, thank you for sharing your prayer.
Amen – the way Hannah prayed so earnestly and fervently with a broken heart always touched me, and the Lord is so close to those with a humble and contrite spirit.
❤️
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
Amen! Thank you Rhonda.. ❤️
I’m so thankful that this God, this Lord over all the angel hosts, we don’t even know the number, they are so vast..yet He stooped down to make Himself known to us! He
Yes, EC!
So vast!
This is how I fight my battles
You got me singing…
I ❤️ that song
That came to my mind tooooo, Donna. ❤️
For I am a great King says the LORD of Armies, and my name will be feared among the nations. Malachi 1:14
❤️
Amazing!
Somehow in all my readings and studies I have never really paid heed to just how often God is referred to as the Lord of armies.I really like this study about the names of God as it gives us what name to call Him depending on the circumstance of our life. You know how it is when you’ve a child – the moment you mention their full name, they know. ‘Oops, I’ve been naughty,’ and when you mention a pet name, they know that all is well in the land.
In our battles, we are not alone, lets call on the God of armies.
Especially in the unseen spiritual realm
For the Lord is marching on
And His army is ever strong
And His glory shall be seen upon our land
Raise the anthem, sing the victory song
Praise the Lord for the battles won
No weapon formed against us shall stand
For the Captain of the host is Jesus
We’re following in His footsteps
No foe can stand against us in the fray
For the Captain of the host is Jesus
We’re following in His footsteps
No foe can stand against us in the fray
We are marching in Messiah’s band
The keys of victory in his mighty hand
Let us march on to take our promised land
For the Lord is marching on
And His army is ever strong
And His glory shall be seen upon our land
I love this!
There is a rock and roll jazzed up version I heard from some Indian Christians like from . I ❤️ love this version!
Yes, and Amen!❤️
Love this, Tanya ❤️
Hannah- “The Lord of Host is never too busy to lean down and listen to our distraught cries.”Grace Fox
We are at war. An unseen enemy has declared war on G-d’s people. ” Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities ,against cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. For this reason take up the full armor of God…” Ephesians 6:11-13
” Surrounding us is spiritual conflict: angels versus demons, good versus evil, light versus darkness. But amazingly, most believers live as if the conflict is not even happening,as if the battle of the ages is just a fantasy or sci-fi story. What’s worse is most people think the only battle is what they can see-as if the real enemy is the person with whom they are arguing, their job, their health, the economy,or anynumber of other things.
Spiritual warfare is an epic battle that begin between good and evil that begin when Satan was cast out of heaven.Confrontation escalated in the garden of Eden, when the first man, Adam, received a near fatal blow that has affected the history of God’s people. Then Jesus came to earth and faced battle daily. The devil tempted him in the wilderness, and the battle raged. Jesus was sent to the cross to die,and the battle raged. He victoriously rose on the third day,but the enemy hasn’t surrendered.” Quoted from an article The Real Enemy by Dr. Tony Evans.
Having a military God is always important because the battle is the Lord ‘s. I remember two a very old songs “Victory In Jesus” and the “Captain of the Host is Jesus.”
We have an Almighty God.
Amen, Tanya, thank you.
That song, Victory in Jesus, brings back many memories of that little country church off the beaten path, voices raised and the distinctive sounds of Pentecostal piano playing.
My grandmother sang that song very often in our home! ” I heard an old old story how a Savior came from glory. “
Yep, I started singing it here when she said it! (my hubby not surprised at all that I break out in random hymn…lol)
LOL!!
We still sing “Victory in Jesus” in our church. I’ll have to look the other one up, as I haven’t heard of it. Thanks for your words today!
I do miss singing hymns! I love all types, but growing up with hymns they stay with you always! (heart)
Thank you Tanya. And Amen. ❤️
Another name for God that brought a smile of thankfulness to my face. His power is endless, as is His love for us.
.
Revere and give honor to the LORD of hosts (armies), worship and acknowledge His truthfulness, His goodness, His ability and willingness to bless His children, His anger at the rebellion, disobedience, attempts at deceiving Him and disrespect from those same children, His discipline, His love and His grace poured out on them. This is/was the children of Israel then and now, and this is me/us in the right now.
.
Simplicity of faith and faithfulness –
Seek good and not evil; in fact, hate evil and love good.
Live out the ‘golden’ rule, never take His blessings for granted, worship the LORD of armies in love and thankfulness.

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear?
You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still
Whom shall I fear?
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
My strength is in your name
For you alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I’m holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
Nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I’m holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
