In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.

LIVING GOD: God’s superiority over all other gods and idols

Elohim Chay, “Living God,” is one of the most frequently used names for God in the Old Testament. The name Elohim was paired with adjectives that described the God of Israel. It emphasizes the unique nature of God: He is alive.

The very notion of a living God distinguished Elohim from idols constructed of wood or iron. The Israelite God was—and is—living and active in and among His people.

God help me to give my time, talents, and resources to you the living God not to the false Gods of this world. These false Gods are temporary, You God are eternal.

  9. Traci Gendron says:

When I knew my son’s death was coming, all I could do was cry out to God.

Psalm 84:2 I long and yearn for the course of the Lord; my heart and flesh cry out for the living God.

This resonated with me as well. The very notion of a living God distinguished Elohim from idols constructed of wood or iron. The Israelite God was – and – is – living and active in and among His people.

    Hello Shes
Back with a song in my head. A hymn written by Daniel Iverson in 1935. You may know the chorus.

    “Spirit of the Living God
    Fall fresh on me
    Spirit of the Living God
    Fall fresh on me
    Melt me mold me
    Fill me use me
    Spirit of the Living God
    Fall fresh on me”

And there’s something about the word “fresh” that speaks to the newness & nearness of Him.
    Evergreen.
    Embodied.
    Active.
    Able.

The song “Never Lost a Battle” by Tauren Wells is playing, and as I sing (terrible, but loudly..lol), I pray along with the words for SJG specifically and also Tami and BJ. For the battle is his, and we trust and pray in faith. In the end, Christ-followers win and our suffering draws us to Him like nothing else.
Another hug for you Sharon and Tami, and anyone else facing giant, battles, loss and fears.

Joining in prayer over all the needs!

We are blessed! We know and serve a living God! People may ask how we know? We know because of the Word but better yet we can feel Him in our darkest hours or quiet times, or joyful times! His presence is always with us! When we see all of creation, it sings praise to Him!

Share your story today with someone! I be pray God will give me an opportunity today to do just that!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes! Amen Cheryl! We should be bold and share as often as we can!! I LOVE Wednesday because I go to Jail!! lol. To teach Jesus (and God, and Holy Spirit!) and show them love, and truth!

  16. Ashley M. says:

This name reminds us that God is not distant or dormant. He hears. He speaks. He moves. His Spirit is still at work today—comforting, convicting, guiding, and breathing life into weary hearts.

When we call on Elohim Chay, we’re not just offering up hope into the silence. We are reaching out to the God who responds. He is the One who raised Jesus from the dead and still brings dead things to life—hope, faith, dreams, relationships.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen, copying! This is so relevant and good for us to know in these times!

  17. Wendy B says:

The words ‘God’s not dead, He’s surely alive’ comes to mind. I don’t wish to begin a Newsboys controversy at all, so that aside, the words are true. Our great God is alive. He is present, at work, vested in our lives. He is King, Redeemer, Prince of Peace, our Hope and our Savior. All praise to the Lord as we live and walk in the knowledge of the greatness and power of who He is – our living God. Thanks be to God.

  18. Rhonda J. says:

The LIVING God! Elohim Chay! Why would we follow a dead god, or a wood carved image?
Why would we deny a God that shows and reveals himself in the beautiful astonishing world all around us? The animals and the seas, the galaxy, all in perfect harmony. That holds all things together. The God of miracles with no explanations other than Him! Raising dry bones to live, where death was once- now dancing on the grave!!
I am so glad I KNOW the Living God, Elohim! His Son came, died, and rose again. Jesus is Alive and living, sitting at the right hand! And more so…we have the Holy Spirit ALIVE in us. We need, as Christ-followers to bring the Holy Spirit to the center of our walk, We need to led him reveal and remind us of all the purposes of Jesus. Yes, he loved everyone, but his purpose was to point them to his Father, the Living God, and that requires knowing him. God has boundaries and commands and is Holy, and his children must obey and must have transformation. The lukewarm will be spit out. Let us love, but also teach the correct truth. The whole word. Not just the New Testament and the loving Jesus, but the Living God that is shown throughout the Old. The God of fire and Authority. Demanding righteousness. With Love for his nation and his people, that we are grafted into.

    1. Tami Cutler says:

      Amen Rhonda!

  19. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

The one major difference between the true God and all the other false gods – He is alive!! Praise God! And because He lives, we will live with Him for all eternity!

    Lord of Lords
    Bright Morning Star

PRAYER REQUEST – Dear sisters, I haven’t done the reading yet, I first wanted to ask you for your prayers.
I recently had a visit with a Natropath Dr. She did some quite extensive blood work which revealed a number of concerning results. One was that I tested positive for celiac, another showed I have very high concentrations of inflammation in my body as well as histamine and the most concerning, cancer antigen 19-9. This could mean that I have pancreatic cancer, a cyst on my pancreas, or another cancer or could be any of the following: pancreatitis, gallstones, liver disease, and bile duct obstruction – none of which are good.
She has put me on a boo coo of supplements plus a medication that reduces inflammation. I am to take all of them for 3 months and then she will redo blood work.
Quite honestly, I don’t know what all of this means for me. I’m trying not to dwell on it or think about but I’m not going to lie – it’s all a bit scary.
I don’t discuss it with Jeff because emotionally & mentally, he just can’t handle it. He loves God and trusts Him, but somethings he has a really hard time with.
So I ask prayers for me – that all this might turn out to be nothing, prayers for Jeff to not let fear overtake him and prayers for wisdom and discernment with how to proceed forward.
This is not something I’m ready to share with my church family because I just don’t know enough yet.
I’m confident that I can count on your prayers – you’ve proved that over and over again in this community.
I love you all and thank you in advance for your prayers! ❤️

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I am glad you felt led and comfortable to share your heart and fears with us Sharon. You are right, that we, God’s prayer warrior will rally for you, our dear friend and sister!! Remember to cast those fears (Psalm 55:22), and know that He will sustain you! I am so glad we know the Living God will sustain us, uphold us, shelter us!! Lord, we know you already know what’s up ahead, and that we can rely on you every step, you go before us, and you carry us when needed, you strengthen us, and you reveal yourself to us more and more when we trust you. Thank you for being our shelter and refuse for whatever storms lie ahead, or if you stop the storm from even coming. We will keep faith and surrender to you in all our trials. Amen

Dearest Sharon… i am sorry to hear this. Praying, my love, to the Living God, who hears, sees and knows and to whom we can give our troubles and trust..

    4. Wendy B says:

Praying Sharon. Its a lot of potentiallly very concerning information to carry. May the Lord give you peace and assurance that He walks with you, that He has made your body and that through His mighty hand and various avenues of medicine He can bring healing. The extensive testing that a functional medicine practitioner can provide can be so helpful and beneficial, often revealing things that general medical testing does not. Understandable that it is scary but we will pray that God’s strength, wisdom and peace will surround you.❤️

Absolutely, I will pray for you! Praying for healing, peace in the midst of waiting, and for your doctor to have wisdom and divine direction. Praying for Jeff. That God will just wrap you in His loving arms!

    7. Rachel says:

Goodness, that’s a lot. I do not want to add to the fear factor, but as a nurse, may I be honest and say that waiting 3 months to check on basically any of those possibilities is alarming? Would you consider having a second opinion from another source? I like the idea of a functional medicine provider if you have any in your area. Will pray for peace, wisdom and of course – healing. ❤️❤️❤️

      1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I did send the lab results to my general practitioner just yesterday. I’m hoping she looks them over & gets back to me – the results was 66 pages long!
I’m thinking to also send the results to my oncologist – whom I haven’t see in a few years. In 2017 I had breast cancer.

        1. Wendy B says:

I too agree that a more timely follow up is needed and I am praying you hear from your GP and that your oncologist will weigh in as well. ❤️

        2. Rachel says:

Oh, good. I think that was a wise decision. I have really appreciated natural medicine providers over the years, and yet I agree with others who have pointed out that sometimes they tend to blow things out of proportion. Will for sure pray that that is the case in this situation. ❤️

    8. Donna Wolcott says:

Sharon, prayers in the waiting, but I agree with Rachel, that’s a long time to wait and see. Would you consider another opinion?

      1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Yes, I think so. I sent the lab results to my primary doctor & asked her to lmk her thoughts. Hopefully she will.

    9. Gwineth52 says:

I am praying dear Sharon that God will keep you comforted and peaceful until you know more and how wise you are to wait and come here for prayer. Take it one step at a time and remember Mark 11:24 ❤️

    11. Indiana Elaine says:

Dear SJG, will certainly be lifting you in prayer and glad you felt free to share with us. That is a boatload of information to carry for 3 months. Do you have a close knit ladies group with whom you feel free to share this with? The physical hugs and hearing prayers being lifted for you is very healing. I just visited my prayer group this morning for the first in six weeks since my back issues. The hugs and prayers and tears were so meaningful.
I agree with Rachel that a second opinion might be valuable. My daughter is a Dr of integrative medicine which kind of carries the best of both worlds. There may be some in your area. Prayers are with you as you make decisions about your next steps.

    12. Mari V says:

Sweet Sharon…praying for you this VERY moment! Praying you will get answers soon! Praying as you said, that it’s nothing.

    13. Lynne from Alabama says:

Precious Sharon, what an overwhelming list of possible diagnoses, none of which you would really want to deal with. It is my privilege along with all our other SRT sisters to lift you up to our Heavenly Father, the God who is Near. May God give healing and peace to you.

    14. Tami Cutler says:

Hi Sharon, I am praying! I too see a naturopath and sometimes she can blow things out of proportion. I agree with others. Don’t wait the 3 months. You did the right thing by getting results to your primary care and I pray she will lead you. I also read to not stop eating gluten until you see a gastro to confirm celiac as it can skew results. I recently had an endoscopy which tested for celiac by doing a biopsy, I’m pretty sure that is the gold standard for diagnosis but I’m not in healthcare. I did not have celiac, however I did have a small ulcer. Praying you hear from PC soon!

    15. Traci Gendron says:

Dear Sharon – I will be praying for you. I have also had a boatload of labs done recently. It can be a lot of good information, but overwhelming. I agree with Tami Cutler that a naturopath can blow things up. I’m hoping a second opinion can ease some of your fears.

    16. Joy says:

Praying that God will comfort you and heal you and hold you in his loving hands.

Praying, Sharon, in the waiting for your primary and possibly your oncologist to review this extensive batch of information. Agreeing with our sister who reminded that God already knew about the report’s contents. Praying for the Lord’s comfort, wisdom and guidance. ❤️❤️❤️

Praying for you Sharon Jersey Girl.Lord give Sharon the peace your peace that passes all understanding. Lord, thank you for being present in her life and never leaving her or forsaking her

  22. Tami says:

“For who out of all humanity has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 Go near and listen to everything the Lord our God says. Then you can tell us everything the Lord our God tells you; we will listen and obey.” This struck me because now we have access to the living God, we don’t need to be merely an observer on the sidelines, hearing from God through someone else. Because of Jesus the veil has been torn. Lord, help me not to take this privilege for granted. Update on my brother BJ: he is slowly getting worse week by week and his life has become very small. He is in pain most of the day. Unfortunately he is not a candidate for hospice care because he receives supplemental IV nutrition which is consider a life saving measure. In order for him to receive in-home hospice care and get the pain management he needs, he would have to agree to stop the feeding. In essence, pull his own plug so to speak. It’s very frustrating because if you had another type of illness but could still eat, you would be allowed to. We need a power move from God! I do have a praise report – my daughter is doing so much better!! Two months ago she was in such a dark place and my husband and I were beyond concerned. She didn’t want to see friends, laid in the dark all day, did not want to go in the sun, things we had never seen before in her. Fast forward, today she is out and about, working, and we even just rented her and her roommate an apartment for the next school year, which Chela found on her own. Years ago, God gave my husband a vision of Chela as a lioness, strong, vibrant, healthy, and free. We have been standing on that promise and when I saw her in the city, negotiating with the real estate agent, I saw a glimpse of that lioness. To God be the glory!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh Tami, I am so happy for your praise report for your daughter, what a blessing. I love that your husband had that vision and gave you something to cling to and keep praying for! It’s funny that we think things should go so right for us all the time- quickly and miraculously, but oftentimes, we have long walks to grow in the Lord in suffering.
I am sorry BJ is in that suffering. I pray that the Lord will provide what is needed, and that the girls and family will come closer to the Lord through this awful time. Who can we go to but the Lord when things don’t make sense in our eyes? Hugs for you all. Stay strong through faith.

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Tami I am so sorry for what your brother is going through. Continued prayers for him – that God would ease his pain and minister to him while he walks this road.
But God – what a praise about Chela! So happy to hear that she is out and about, and working! I will continue to pray for her. ❤️

    3. GramsieSue says:

Oh Tami, so sorry to hear this about your brother. Sometimes our system just does not give us the care that we really need. Praying hard that BJ gets some relief from the pain without giving up the IV nutrition that he needs.
And oh so thankful for the turnaround in your daughter! What a blessing!
Big hug for you this morning! ❤️

    4. Wendy B says:

Praise the Lord for His hand in Chela’s life and the evidence that she has moved from deep darkness. May He continue to be her strength and song.
I’m sorry about BJ’s continual decline. May the Lord’s strength, peace and presence carry him through these days and be near to you all as you walk beside him❤️

    5. Cheryl Blow says:

Praying for your brother, BJ. Praising God for your daughter’s transformation!

      1. MARTHA HIX says:

        Me too ❤️

    6. Rachel says:

So sorry for BJ’s suffering :( has he had a palliative care consult? Sometimes the palliative care team is able to advocate in really helpful ways.

      1. Tami Cutler says:

Yes we have a palliative care doctor. She even advocated for him with the hospice care director who she is friends with but no go! Thank you

        1. Rachel says:

Oh, bummer. That is frustrating. I’m so sorry :(

    7. AZ Walker says:

Dear Tami, I am continuing to pray for BJ and strength for you and your family. So happy for Chela.

    8. Lynne from Alabama says:

Precious Tami, I was just praying for BJ, you, and Chela this morning. I’m so thrilled to hear about Chela’s improvement! I’m sorry that BJ is declining so rapidly and the difficulties with his care. May God give you strength as his caregiver and give BJ comfort.

  23. Tanya. says:

As we study the Bible and live our lives we know a relational G-d who speaks, sees, and hears. A G-d who rescues and redeems. He performs wonders and acts on our behalf. He is not motionless or deaf.

My example is not from our text today but when Elijah challenged t the prophets of Baal at the contest on Mt. Carmel. I Kings 18. G-d responded with fire.”Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood the stones the dust, and it licked up the water in the trench.” I Kings18:38. The prophets of Baal received no response after cutting themselves, dancing around the altar, and raving but nothing happened.
Jesus said, ” I am the resurrection and the Life.”

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, what a good example for the Living God!

  24. Searching says:

We serve the Living God – a key piece of the foundation of our faith. I am reminded of a song I’ve shared before by The Perrys, If You Knew Him (written by Joseph Habedank & Rodney Griffin)
    .
    VERSE 1

I walked by the tomb of Buddha, looked inside and saw his bones

Traveled on to see Mohammed, still wrapped up in his grave clothes

But then I journeyed to a garden, where old Joseph left Him lay

The precious Lamb, God’s own begotten,
He was no longer in that grave
.
    .

CHORUS

If you knew Him like I know Him, you would know that He’s alive

If you felt Him like I feel Him, resurrection, deep inside

You’d know He’s living, and death has died
.

    .
    VERSE 2

If you’re wandering in the darkness, come and step into the Light

Nail-scarred hands reach out to help you, to pull you safe from death to life

Friends, I too have stood where you stand, should I trust in things unseen?

Just one step in His direction, then in love He ran to me.
    .
JMH – Praying Psalm 51:12 that the joy of God’s salvation would be restored to you, and His Spirit will continue to uphold you.
Thank you for letting us know you’re here. I often wonder at the size of our study group.
SUSAN BURLEY – continuing to pray for Seth’s healing

    1. Cheryl Blow says:

These words in Psalm 84 had my mind go off to the song. Spirit of the living God..
    .
Spirit of the Living God fall afresh on me..
Spirit of the Living God fall afresh on me.
    Melt me.
    .
    Mould me.
    .
    Fill me.
    .
    Use me.
Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me…
    .
    .
This is my prayer for each of us as we go through our day today, that the Spirit of the living God will mould us, fill us and use us, as He melts our hearts for what breaks His..
    .
Spirit of the Living God, please, fall afresh on us..
