Jesus’s Final Invitation

Open Your Bible

John 21:1-25, Hebrews 2:17-18, 1 Peter 5:1-4

The Gospel of John reveals some of Peter’s greatest missteps and moments of weakness, from a failed water-walking attempt to cutting off a man’s ear. His darkest moment came when he denied being Jesus’s disciple. But for all of his fumbles and failures, Jesus never rejected Peter, even after Peter’s vehement rebuttal. It’s clear in John 21 that the relationship between Master and disciple was restored.

It was an early morning of breakfast and conversation, seaside. Three times Jesus questioned Peter’s love for Him, echoing Peter’s trilogy of denials in the previous chapter. Jesus’s responses involved calling Peter to care for His sheep, for His Church. It’s a redemptive example for us, as we see that Peter had been forgiven and included in Jesus’s plans for His kingdom.

Jesus also revealed a hard truth: Peter’s future martyrdom. We shouldn’t see this as a punishment for earlier mistakes, since Jesus didn’t give any indication of this. Neither did He elaborate on the details or even the time frame regarding the end of Peter’s life. Instead, He issued both an invitation and a command.

“Follow me.”
—John 21:19

Jesus places how Peter will die in the context of how he should live. “Follow me.” This two-word sentence is the driving theme of Jesus’s directives to Peter. When we reflect on the conversation in whole, we are reminded of what it means to say yes to Him. The call to follow Jesus is a commitment to discipleship, a commitment to live out the gospel in a world that is opposed to the message of hope.

“Follow me.” Jesus’s instruction to Peter isn’t just a one-time action. In the original Greek reading, the phrase carries the meaning of repeated action. Each day that we live is an opportunity to embrace the invitation to follow Jesus, to love Him deeply, and to serve Him wholeheartedly.

Perhaps when reading John 21, the revelation of Peter’s death alarms us, maybe even disturbs us. Jesus refuses to shield us from the truth. As His disciples, we will encounter hard seasons and challenging times, and often. But whatever interval of life we go through, we submit to His will. Jesus knows from experience what opposition, pain, and grief feels like. And “as our merciful and faithful high priest” (Hebrews 2:17), He is with us, infusing us with the strength to endure all that we face.

Other scriptures, including Peter’s writings, reveal to us that Peter remained faithful to Jesus’s call to “shepherd [His] sheep” (John 21:16). Echoing Jesus’s words, Peter encouraged other leaders to “shepherd God’s flock” (1Peter 5:2), overseeing God’s people with care and compassion.

We may not all hold a formal leadership title. But as members of God’s flock, He has commissioned each of us to follow Him, to carry out whatever He has entrusted to us. And Peter promises that when our chief Shepherd returns for us, He will reward our faithfulness (v.4).

    Yes, why 153 fish??

Got Questions dot org relates that fisherman were not strangers to tallying fish. In short, it was a remarkable catch after a night of catching nothing. (Due to Jesus’ Divine intervention!)

Also from Got Questions, there are numbers that are repeated throughout the Bible that have meanings, like 7(number of completeness), or 40(number of probation or trial). “Whether or not the numbers really do have a significance is still debated in many circles. The Bible definitely seems to use numbers in patterns or to teach a spiritual truth. However, many people put too much significance on ‘biblical numerology,’ trying to find a special meaning behind EVERY(emphasis mine) number in the Bible. Often a number in the Bible is simply a number. God does not call us to search for secret meanings, hidden messages, and codes in the Bible. There is more than enough truth in the words and meanings of Scripture to meet all our needs and make us ‘complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work’ (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17).“

Actual numerology is defined by the dictionary as, “the study of the occult significance of numbers”. Got Questions’ definition is similar, but expanded: “Numerology is an occult practice that has no basis in Scripture and no place in the Christian life. Although the Bible uses numbers such as 7 and 40 to represent specific things, this does not mean that every number has a hidden meaning. Numerology is a form of fortune–telling, which the Bible absolutely condemns (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:10–13; Galatians 5:19–20).”

—This also includes “Angel Numbers”, in case any of you are familiar with that term.

I read those articles yesterday morning, too, B! My NLT Study Bible says there is ‘no significance’ to the number other than it confirming an ‘rye witness’ account if the event. ❤

One of the first things that stood out to me as I read today are the parallels in John 21 to the story earlier in the gospels when Jesus initially called his disciples. He identifies they didn’t catch any fish and gives them instructions, which on the surface seem unlikely to be successful (casting the net at specific spot). In the version of the story described in Luke 5 from earlier in his ministry the disciples were (understandably) skeptical (which they verbalized) and even so obeyed and caught a large some of fish. We can compare/contrast that with the story in John 21 the disciples are given similar instructions, listen (without any mention of them questioning Jesus) and are rewarded (with a large catch of fish).

I will say, Simon Peter’s response to recognizing Jesus on shore, makes me smile. The fact that he just dove into the water, he had no regard for what anyone else was doing/how it might appear. He only wanted to get close to Jesus as fast as possible. May I be that excited to be around Jesus!

Wow! Such amazing insights! What can I add other than to thank God that Jesus is always reaching out to us to restore us and drawing us back to Him! And the command to follow Him in obedience and love God and love others. Feeding the flock God has given us. (Family, children, grandchildren, our kids team at church, small group, our prison ministry…….)

Our church’s verse for this year is “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬
    https://bible.com/bible/111/mat.16.24.NIV

We are disciples of Jesus. We choose to follow Him daily and choose to deny ourselves! It’s a daily commitment!
Do I do this well……no some days, I have to start over!

I was woken up this morning by a little hand stroking my face. My eyes opened to see a smiley Lorenzo..
“Wake up Nana,”. Taking my hand, he continued.. “come on Nana, follow me”
    .
What was it about those words that had me get out of bed with a stretch and a yawn, to follow this perfect 2 year old?
I would no more follow that instruction without first finding out why, and then a “give me a minute grunt.
    .
I wonder, how often i hear Jesus’s words and dare I say it, turn the other way. My plans for my future and in that moment do not corrolate with the truth, and so I dismiss.. God being God and Jesus being my hope, things do fall into place in the end, but by golly what a fuss on my part..
    .
Sister Acts.. I will follow Him comes to mind as I write..
    .

Love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I’ll follow, I’ll follow, I’ll follow
    .
    I will follow him
Follow him wherever he may go
There isn’t an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep me away
    .
I must follow him (follow him)
Ever since he touched my hand I knew
That near him I always must be
And nothing can keep him from me
    He is my destiny (destiny)
    .
I love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I’ll follow, I’ll follow, I’ll follow
He’ll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever..
    .
Lord, help me do better in feeding your sheep and shepherding them.. May i be as eager and willing as I was this morning when little lorenzo asked me to follow him.
Lord in your mercy, hear my prayer.
    .
    Amen..
    .
    Happy Friday my loves..❤️♥️❤️

Great Study – sorry to see it end!
    .
“But for all of his fumbles and failures, Jesus never rejected Peter…”
    .
This may sound selfish, but I’m glad to see that Peter had fumbles and failures. It makes him human like we are. And it greatly encourages me to know that when I have fumbles and failures – God doesn’t reject me.

Just a few days ago I remember saying, “Lord, you must be so disappointed in me.” Not that I have some awful sin in my life, but it’s the little things that seem to happen over and over again – like a bad attitude toward someone, or saying something with a tiny bit of sarcasm followed by “just kidding”.

God is so patient, so kind and so understanding. Peter could have been so “undone” when he denied Jesus, but he accepted the forgiveness that Jesus extended. I must remind myself constantly to do the same. Peter is indeed our redemptive example.
    .
I pray that I would always heed Jesus call when He says, “Follow me!”
    .
?The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
    Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.” Amen!

This has been a great study. Thank you SRT leadership and to all of you that have shared, challenged and prayed.

Follow me. This is a daily action that I am called to live out. Its a two word, simple phrase but the impact and outcome is life changing. From the devotional:
“Each day that we live is an opportunity to embrace the invitation to follow Jesus, to love Him deeply, and to serve Him wholeheartedly.”

Heavenly Father, your grace, mercy and forgiveness is a gift – thank you. Guide my heart Lord in loving you well. In seeking you, abiding in you and sitting at your feet. Fill me with your courage, strength and boldness to follow after you. Lead my in the way that is yours so that others can know hope, peace and truth. I love you Lord and my life is yours. Amen ❤️

What stood out to me today was the 3 commands:
    1) feed my lambs
    2) Shepherd my sheep
    3) feed my sheep
My brain is usually a-whirl when I read that, but this morning I isolated each statement and considered this: Lambs = new believers?
Sheep = those maturing in their faith
    .
Lambs need milk. Hebrews 5:13 – “Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.”
    .
Sheep are more mobile needing guidance to stay on the right path. We need to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we travel our path.
    .
Even mature sheep (believers) need to be fed. We can be intentional about feeding on God’s Word and allowing Him to reveal how it applies in our lives.
Just my rambling thoughts here at the end.
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤
    .

  16. Rhonda J. says:

What a great walk through John this was! Ending with the grand display not only of forgiveness to Peter, but of restoration! He questions Peter 3x of his love and devotion, and mindset, and heart. DO YOU LOVE ME..!? Echoing 3x’s of the denial. I have failed Jesus (and myself) a little more than that, oh yes, many times over. I am so thankful for the free gift of forgiveness and restoration! He restored me after all my wrongs, still giving me good things that I didn’t deserve. But it didn’t end there!! He gave Peter the command to follow him, and to guide and shepherd others!! He would know personally that it is not an easy journey, giving him compassion for them, and an eagerness to show them the forgiveness. I think of my serving of jail, and how I approach them. There’s a funny saying “the only difference between you all and me…dramatic pause- you got caught! It’s true, I could have easily ended up there with all my horrible deeds. But more than some of the illegal acts, were the sinful acts that imprisoned with their grip of sorrow and regret. Not just of shame in myself, but that I loved Jesus and felt horrible for betraying him in my actions against him and his word. I’m sure it made Peter, like myself, even more so grateful not just of the forgiveness, but that he draws us in for a big hug and love. Don’t you love that when one of your children does something wrong, and they have that look of shame on their face, and after you give them the little discipline speech, you pull them in for a big hug! Peter got the little discipline speech- but got the big embrace as well. Setting him right and ready to worship and serve in a whole new way!! It is much more motivating and impactful knowing the one that walked with Jesus, his main man, failed him in many ways, yet through that, he was used more powerfully! Transforming! Set on a great path to be a worker for Christ. I get the privilege to walk alongside those physically imprisoned and show them love and empathy, and point them to the Savior that frees them from Spiritual bondage. This past Wed, what started as a show of empathy and care to a lady, giving her a quick little hug, turned into a 1 to 2 minute crying episode, where she just let it all out. It was a drowning to being saved clinging, a- I don’t care who is here seeing this hug, letting it all out, have to empty it here…hug. It happens quite often there. They have hit their shameful, helpless, dark pit. Nothing they can do in their own strength to change it. It is really something I can’t put into words.
Did the other disciples get and know the full impact for Peter? His denial?
Now, not only after the restoration…but what are you going to do with it? Just like to Peter…the command to feed the sheep. Follow him. Go. Do. Give what you have been given. Tell what you have been told. I go because the forgiveness and restoration I have received. It is so amazing I must share with others my testimony! My story is His Glory! And how will our younger girls and women that will indeed fall into mistakes and sin know that there is FREEDOM for them?! How will the poor be fed if we don’t go give them bread and fish?! How will the imprisoned be free if we don’t go give them? We are now the hands and feet of Jesus and living testimonies to those we are around daily!

And then the predicted death! Well, that wasn’t fun to hear I bet! “Someone will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go”..yikes! Did that weigh on him? We would have never thought about being martyred for our faith in America just 10 or 15 years ago. We have seen persecution for sure in those decades come more and more often. And then we saw a man get shot in the neck in live time for his beliefs and telling people of Jesus. It was shocking and unbelievable, and horrible. And it makes us all ask, would I keep telling of Jesus, and the sin he told us to preach against, to tell TRUTH, THE truth, even though it is against culture? Would I do this? Push back, yeah. But if it ostracized me, got me arrested…or killed??!
It is a heavy burden…but God said his yoke is easy, my burden light. We know if we walk with him we will have peace and an ease of telling of him! We have clarity and blessed assurance. Thank you Jesus for the Cross. I had in my mind singing when I woke up Charity Gayle’s “Thank You Jesus for the Blood!!” So good. Listen to the live version!!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I also pondering on the prophesy that John would not die before he comes. Think of all the ways they indeed try to kill him…in a boiling vat of oil!! Yet he survived…finally they just say- throw over there on that island, at least we will be free of him. lol. And Jesus comes to him!! How amazing, and revealed something that is for all of us to heed and know, and we will be blessed- REVELATIONS!!

      1. Margaret W. says:

If you have never seen the Island of Patmos, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world! It is hard to imagine a Mediterranean island as a punishment. (I guess they didn’t know about Siberia.) But then, John probably didn’t get to enjoy the view in the cave—until Jesus showed up in all his majesty and glory, with a voice so powerful it rent the ceiling of the cave in 3 parts. If you ever have a chance to go there, take it!

A couple of things stood out to me about the kindness of Jesus:
    1. He was still serving them after everything that had happened. He had a meal ready for them when they came in from fishing and then he physically served them the food as well v.13. The humble servant.
    2. His kindness in bringing Peter to full restoration by asking him 3 times “do you love me?” And giving him his marching orders 3 times – to coincide with Peter’s 3 denials. Showing he had fully forgiven and restored him to his mission.
Jesus is so intentional and loving with us as well. May we see that personally in our lives.

One thing about being a book lover is that certain details just jump out at you. I’m always noticing little phrases or wondering, “Why did the writer point that out?” That’s exactly how I felt reading about the CHARCOAL fire in John’s Gospel. Never noticed that detail before. It only shows up twice—once when Peter denies Jesus, and again when Jesus cooks breakfast for the disciples.

It’s such an ordinary detail, but it carries so much weight. Two simple fires sitting in the background of two huge moments: Peter’s crushing denial, and then Jesus’s beautiful redemption and restoration of him. It’s the kind of small detail that ends up telling a much bigger story. And if we really think about it, it’s our story too: how even when we mess up, it doesn’t mean Jesus stops loving us.

I’ve loved how many little things have jumped out at me reading John this time around. It’s one of the reasons I love SRT so much. Thank you, ladies, for an amazing study.

Is there significance to the 153 fish? It just seems like such a random number to be detailed. In the same verse as the charcoal fire (John 21:9).

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I thought the same thing, why detail 153!?

        1. Rhonda J. says:

          I asked AI
The detail of 153 fish in John 21 symbolizes the completeness of the Gospel’s call to all people, a miraculous abundance, and the universal mission to gather believers from every nation into God’s kingdom. While the exact meaning remains debated, common interpretations link it to numerology (representing the 153 nations or “Sons of God”), a parallel with Ezekiel’s vision of fish in the river of God, and a sign of God’s intimate knowledge and provision.

The 3rd time Jesus questioned Peter, it hit home hard that he had let Jesus down that night in the courtyard.
John 21:17 …. Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”
How many times in a day, every day, do we fail to show our love for Jesus, to follow and glorify Him? This hurts my heart.
    .
Jesus’ response when Peter questioned Him about John and how he might die is a good reminder to, … how should I say this …, focus on your own walk of faith and your own relationship with Christ rather than comparing what Christ has done or is doing for someone else vs what He has not done or is not doing (at least right now) for you. A few years ago, someone stated to their parent that treatment among their siblings was not equal and therefore not fair. The parent replied, after what I have done for you, what more would you ask for?
Christ has saved me and has given me eternal life with Him, what more?

The risen shepherd still stands on the shore, calling us by name – providing what we lack, forgiving our failures and sending us out with one simple invitation…follow me.

    1. Karen Y says:

Thank you for this personalized word picture. I often forget as I read the Bible, I’m not just reading stories about people who lived long ago, but I’m reading about myself whose life is here and now.

    2. Cheryl Blow says:

      ❤️

    3. Gwineth52 says:

      Yes, so very much, Kimberly!

  28. Cathy Tubby says:

Interesting, when Jesus says of John “If I want him to remain until I return what is that to you?”, John lived until he had written Revelation.

  29. Danielle B says:

Lord be with us as we follow you. As Tameshia shared we will have hardships and challenges, which we will only get through with you! I thank you for being with me earlier this year when I walked through my unexpected health journey. I wouldn’t undo it for the work you have done in me as a result. Help us to follow you.

  30. Tami says:

“Jesus knows from experience what opposition, pain, and grief feels like. And “as our merciful and faithful high priest” (Hebrews 2:17), He is with us, infusing us with the strength to endure all that we face.” This brings me comfort today. I am in a tough season, overwhelmed with 2 new classes at work, settling my brother’s and my dad’s estates, my daughter and son are both struggling, and now the darkness and cold of a NY winter coming. I am just feeling sad and disconnected. I’m trying to sit at the Lord’s feet and just say, “YOU know…”

    1. Danielle B says:

      Praying for you dear sister.

    2. Searching says:

❤️ praying for you as you overcome, with Christ’s strength, these challenges and tasks. Praying as you tackle these 2 classes with confidence, as you walk through the various steps of settling these estates, one step at a time. Praying for your daughter and son, and for all faced with these tough winters. ❤️

    3. Carol H says:

Sending prayers, Tami, for all you are dealing with in this season and warm hugs from Maine ❤️

      1. Tami says:

Warm hugs from Maine:) Love this! You prob has us beat on the cold!

    4. Cheryl Blow says:

      Praying for you, Tami!

    5. MARTHA HIX says:

Praying for you to be encouraged and to know that you are seen. Thank you, Jesus. ❤️

    6. Mercy says:

Praying Tami for joy and warmth to come, that the Lord’s strength to carry you through your weariness and sadness. It’s starting to get cold and dark here for us. I have a small sun therapy lamp.

    7. Gwineth52 says:

      With manifold prayer, dear Tami.
Warmest wishes for “wintering” whatever storm.

  31. Kelly (NEO) says:

    From HRT today:
“We will never be freed to follow Jesus unless we confront our failure in His presence. There is no freedom in avoiding it because the memory and the burden will continue to hold us in bondage to shame and guilt. The only way to be forgiven and restored is to bring our sins into the presence of Jesus.
“We can think of many reasons why we should not be allowed to follow Jesus, but every reason is undone by His willingness to forgive and restore. Christ has paid our debts once for all upon the cross, and He invites those who have failed Him in every way to follow Him as members of His redeemed people and to be a part of His mission of restoration in the world.”

    Mic drop.
    .
So I was pulled off into a tengent with a little detail in the reading.
    .
The net was so full that seven men could not pull in into the boat (vs. 6) and it had to be dragged behind the boat (vs. 8). YET, Peter pulled the net by himself(?!) to the shore (vs. 11). I checked the STEP Bible and the verb for “hauled” is singular. (If it had been plural, one could assume Peter AND the others pulled to shore). So I have not found any commentary about this point, do any of your study Bibles address this?
    .
Just wondering. It obviously is not the point.
    .
TRACI GENDRON – so sorry for the turn in Deb’s health. Praying.
    .
SEARCHING – praying for Nate’s recovery.
    .
Request: Husband’s plumbing project went south, and we need to find a plumber to fix. Pray we find one who will give a fair price and is available soon.

    1. Searching says:

Praying for the plumbing project, for quickly finding a fairly priced plumber who is knowledgeable and available. ❤️
      .
Thank you for praying for Nate!
And yes, HRT was good today, bring our sins to Jesus and He will forgive and restore.
      .
I didn’t see any additional clarification on hauling in the fish, and while it may not be the point for today (as you mentioned), still a point definitely worth noticing. Thank you, sister.

    2. Dianne says:

Interesting point about Simon Peter hauling the net by himself. I had to re-read and make some more notes! He was apparently strengthened by seeing the Lord. Thank you for pointing this out.

    3. Traci Gendron says:

About Peter hauling the net by himself makes me think of when a parent has amazing strength to save a child. Ex: rolling a car over.

    4. Carla says:

My wondering was if and what was the conversation at breakfast / while sharing a meal …. Awed silence, comfortable/ uncomfortable, processing what they had all been through, asking yet more questions??

    5. Cheryl Blow says:

KELLY, Praying for a good plumber with reasonable rates!

    6. MARTHA HIX says:

Praying Kelly you get the plumbing done at a reasonable price and soon. ❤️

    7. Tami says:

My son is a plumber… too bad you weren’t in NY:) Praying!

    8. Mercy says:

“confront our failure in His presence”-amen sister, I read this as “confront my fear in His presence” today. Praying for plumbing solution, plumbing is tough.

    9. Cee Gee says:

I, too, researched the number of fish, but didn’t find anything that I could share with confidence. Thanks for bringing that up! ❤ Praying for your plumber search!

    10. Victoria E says:

Kelly (Neo) praying for plumbing ! It is so difficult !
