This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book or two of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we’ll continue looking at the genres of Major and Minor Prophets.
The Book Jeremiah: This book chronicles God’s prophecies to Judah. The prophet Jeremiah prophecies concerning both Judah’s future captivity in Babylon and the promise of a new covenant.
The Book Lamentations: The book of Lamentations records Jeremiah’s expressions of grief, or laments, over the destruction of Jerusalem and Judah’s captivity in Babylon. It also includes an extended expression of hope in God’s faithful love.
How Jeremiah and Lamentations Fit Into the Story: The new covenant passage in Jeremiah 31:31–34 is the longest Old Testament text quoted in the New Testament (Hb 8:8–12). This passage links God’s ancient promises to Eve (Gn 3:15), Abraham (Gn 12:1–3), and David (2Sm 7:16–19) with New Testament assurances that God in Christ grants believers new hearts, salvation, and fellowship with Him.
Lamentations invites us to meet God in the midst of our suffering and teaches us the language of prayer. Instead of offering a set of techniques, easy answers, or inspiring slogans for facing pain and grief, the book gives voice to our pain through lament, reorients our focus to the faithfulness of God, and affirms that He is able to sustain us.

I’m learning that God has promised to put His teaching in our hearts, which INCLUDES how to lament, when to lament, ect. Not only are we called to lament, we are promised that we are shown how. How cool is it that our Father not only accepts our full emotions with open arms, but shows us how (and most importantly, who) to lament. It is essential to a healthy Christian life.
How do the promises of the new covenant in Jeremiah make space for lament in your relationship with God?
My sins are forgiven if I put my trust in the New Covenant, and He will never leave me as He writes His law on my heart, but God does not promise an end to suffering. This gives me space to lament over injustice, all while being reassured of His presence.
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?
Redemption for sinful people who have gone astray can only come to being if God Himself makes a way for us to be reconciled to Him because our history as believers shows that we are an unfaithful people.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the only way, bring fully God and fully man, to live a sinless life and so to be the ultimate sacrifice for all our sins.
Dear Jesus, I love you. Please gel me to love you more. Help me to be a minister by the spirit’s power. Reign in my heart ❤️ in your name, Amen

– That we all have the good and the bad and take it up to the Lord for His guidance and glory. It’s because of Jesus that we can keep on coming back to Him when we sin.

– We can lament when we do things that are bad or we can either be lament when other people have done bad to us. The Lord will always let us bring our injustices to Him.

That we can have both the good and the bad and take them to the Lord for guidance and praise. Because of Jesus we can keep coming back to him with the when we sin.

We can lament when we do bad things or if bad things have been done against us. We can always bring our injustices to the Lord.

The promise of the new covenant reminds me that I can bring my sorrow honestly before God because my hope is rooted in His faithfulness, not my circumstances. Lament and hope can exist together.
This reading also shows that redemption shines brightest in the middle of brokenness. Even while announcing judgment, God was already promising restoration through the new covenant that would ultimately be fulfilled in Christ.
Good morning sweet She’s and Happy Monday!! I’m back! Just got done (well almost) with going through Morning and Dancing with a friend! It has been sweet and great timing. AND here we are this morning in Jeremiah and Lamentations! I love Rhonda J’s last paragraph which I felt sums it all up. “We are here not only to share our praises and joys, but our struggles. We are meant for community and to have our sisters pray for us and with us.” Not quoted exactly, but love this Rhonda!! I missed you all, however did enjoy going through the Morning and Dancing study again with the study guide. Just in the last couple of days there have been some conversations with my kiddos and possible major changes, again! Too much to explain, please pray for guidance, especially for my son. That he may hear the voice of God as what is HIS will for him.

That’s why He announced a new covenant to replace the old covenant under which the Israelites had lived since the days of Moses, a covenant that could direct their conduct but not change their character.
The new covenant isn’t just another renewal of the old covenant that God gave at Sinai; it’s new in every way. I am so glad we have the freedom..that the Lord that made us, gives us reign to love him willingly. It really is so amazing that we send ourselves to hell, not him. He loves and wants relationship with everyone…but we decide. Before it was a people and they had such rules with the endless sacrifices and overwhelming guilt and could never satisfy the covenant (pointing them to a Savior) I’m not saying this very well.
When we come to realize that God LOVES us and wants the very best for us it just changes everything. And that we can come and be open and real with him- cry, struggle, question, lament- that is such a beautiful relationship…with the God of the universe!!
I love Jeremiah..but this made me want to go back to study and read through Lamentations again.
I’m glad we have this group to not only share our praises and joy, but our struggles with each other. It helps us grow in our faith, and not be a solo christian. We are meant for community and to have our sisters pray for us and with us.

To know the Lord made a way with the new covenant, to be grafted in – thank you Lord. And always an encouragement to read and be reminded of Lam 3 in the morning, ‘Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness I say, “The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in him.” Thanks you Lord that you faithfully meet us with hope.
For the entire last 2 weeks all but a couple times I have not been able to post anything or my post goes to moderation and then disappears. I can sometimes comment on other posts but not always. Very frustrating. I have reached out to SRT support but no response. Anyone else having issues?

Thank you for your continued weekly prayers. We are in communication with our daughter and are attempting a short visit to begin the process of repairing the relationship. This is a baby step on the right path but it feels very hard and scary to put myself out there for more possible rejection. Right now my faith is weak but I’m praying I will have the right focus and put all my trust in God.
Praying God will you wisdom with the communication with your daughter. Praying he will give you discernment on what to say and when to say it. Praying your love for her casts out fear and his presence is all over this!

So grateful for our God who meets us in the midst of our laments of pain and sadness. Even now, it’s sometimes hard to let go and let God, sitting at my mom’s bedside as she continues in hospice care. Reading Psalms and Scripture, and playing gospel music (I feel she hears it all) is also comforting to me. Thank you Lord for pursuing me and meeting me where I am ✝️
Oh how hard. Many of us have been through the loss of our dear mothers. It is hard. I remember sitting with my mom as she was put in hospice. Luckily she died that first night. But to leave was the hardest thing and to return to her house after a week of hospital. It was surreal. I loved that my mom always knew and trusted where she was going and was even excited about it. That makes it so much easier. I love that you are reading Psalms and scripture.
The circle of life continues, and always makes us aware that our days are numbered.
Sitting bedside is very difficult. May the Lord meet you there❤️

I was told by a hospice nurse in April, when my mom was there for four days, that this is a time of work for them, sorting through their life, each is different and takes a different amount of time. God be with you
Oh cattee you aren’t alone. I’ve also been there with my grandma at her side singing worship music and trusting God that she understood. Praying over you. It’s so hard
Cat-tee, praying for you and your mom. I can’t help but think what a sweet blessing it is to your mom to have you there waiting with her to go home to the Lord. And a blessing to you too. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” It’s such a hard place to be, saying goodbye to your mom. Praying God gives you peace and comfort.

The promise of God’s new covenant with us highlight His faithfulness always to us—even in the midst of grief, loss, pain, and suffering (which we are encouraged to bring to Him!), we can acknowledge our pain and turn to Him, remembering His faithfulness and have hope for the future! Even in our pain, we can be confident that God has good plans for us, because He loves us, and He proved that love by dying in a cross, rising from the grave, and creating the path for full communion with Him! This is our confidence and hope!

The verses in Jeremiah are really speaking to me about our prodigals! God wants them to turn to Him even more than we do! “ 21 Set up road markers for yourself;
establish signposts! Keep the highway in mind, the way you have traveled. Return, Virgin Israel! Return to these cities of yours. 22 How long will you turn here and there, faithless daughter? For the Lord creates something new in the land”
Lord I pray that You would create something new in the hearts of our prodigals. We know that it is you will that they know you Lord. Pour your Spirit out on them. Let there be testimonies this week Lord! In Jesus’s name. Amen.

God’s promises in Jeremiah 31:34 “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin” gives me the confidence to lament to God, knowing He hears and responds in love and mercy to my brokenness.

Today’s reading show me that despite our continued failure to be a holy people that show forth the goodness of God, the story of redemption continues through God’s grace “because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end” (Lm 3:22).

Oh Thank you Kelly, how nice to see this sweet butterfly’s name this morning that you have kept her in your prayers. She has been there a year for something I believe she did not in the least “intentionally” do to her beloved child. She knows God is using her for his good, her faith amazes me, yet she of course has hard days being away from her family. If she has to go to trial (we are praying for her attorneys to present enough to dismiss. I believe it is her controlling husband that holds the blame if any is to be held.) Thank you for your continued prayers for her.

I talked to a young man yesterday signing up for baptisms! He told his great testimony of a horrible motorcycle accident…But God saved him miraculously and turned him to himself through all the pain and struggle. I loved it when he mentioned his mom and how she raised him in faith but he had gone off in the world.
