Isaac and Rebekah

Open Your Bible

Genesis 22:1-19, Genesis 24:1-4, Genesis 24:10-27, Genesis 24:32-33, Genesis 24:42-61, Genesis 24:67, Genesis 26:1-6

Lately, my four-year old son has taken to bargaining to get what he wants. For instance, a few weeks ago he really wanted to go to the playground at the local park. Rather than simply expressing that desire to us, he couched his request within a commitment: “If you take us to the park, I’ll be really nice and listen to everything you say today.” I couldn’t help but smile because this is such a human thing to do.

Many of us wake up each day looking to earn our place in God’s family and prove that we are lovable and worthwhile in His eyes. We wake up believing that God’s first words to us are, “Prove it.” But this could not be further from the truth for those of us who are in Christ Jesus. Just as it was for Isaac and Rebekah, God’s promise to us is not earned. It is received as a gift of grace. Like any good parent, our Father gives us these gifts not as a reward for good behavior but as an expression of His boundless love.

One of the greatest wonders of our God is that His promise of blessing comes to us without cost. You’ve heard it said, “There are no free lunches.” We live in a culture that requires payment for just about everything. Most things have a cost or requirement attached—and usually, the better the product, the higher the cost. But God’s promise is a pure gift. The same promise that God made to Abraham, which we read about just a few chapters back, God then gave to Abraham’s son, Isaac. “I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham” (Genesis 26:3). What had Isaac done up to this point to earn the blessing of God? Nothing! The promise of land, children, and intimacy with God was given to this couple by grace alone.

In this passage I am reminded that God meets us in the ordinary moments of our day. Isaac was in the fields, and Rebekah was at the well. God was working out His redemptive plans even as they were going about their normal routines. What a fantastic reminder that God works His grace into our lives through ordinary, everyday moments. We do not need to create or seek out profound, mountain-top experiences to find the Lord at work. He’s in the fields, and He’s at the well. He’s not waiting to be found; rather, He’s pursuing us right where we tend to be.

Lord, I needed to hear this. I can’t afford the school trip for my eldest and have promised her we will have a fantastic time doing our own activities and it will be awesome. Then doubt creeps in and mum guilt.

Thank you Lord that this is a plan in motion and that I can trust you to meet me and my daughter in the everyday!

Such a great reminder that grace is a gift and cannot be earned. As a parent, help me to be more like you Jesus, and love my children like you do. Help me to love them and point them to you, rather than simply focusing on behavior change.

I’m always amazed at the story of Abram and Isaac. What an amazing amount of faith Abram had to be willing to sacrifice his son to God. I can’t even imagine. When I think i have faith, then look at this story, I’m humbled to remember that that faith is really pretty weak.

I want to thank you all for your prayers for my dear friend Pat. Sadly, we did not get the results we wanted, but we have hope that the treatment will not be as harsh as we dreaded. We continue to pray for miraculous healing, and for the lost son to be opened to God’s love and hope.

    Yes he does!
I had two God appointments yesterday running errands. A worker at the grocery self check out was helping an elderly lady check out. The lady didn’t even ask for help she just so kindly was helping her ring up her groceries. With SUCH kindness!! I am at the checkout next to them just taking it in as I handle my groceries. I’m extra emotional lately. I can cry at the drop of a dime. I stopped her and said I just want to thank you for being so kind to her, that is exactly how I would hope someone would treat my grandmother. Both of us with tears in our eyes parted. I then went to Lowe’s. As I was waiting for my deck stain to be mixed I spoke to a lady. We chatted for a good twenty minutes. We ended up praying together right in the paint isle of Lowe’s. God is good. He is near. He meets us in the everyday and let me just say, it felt like a mountain top!

This morning God really wanted me to hear that I am loved and cherish just because he loves me. I didn’t earn it and don’t have to prove it. We talked about this a little bit last night in our community group and I love the reminder that God is present in everyday moments and I don’t need to work for His love.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, great to ponder on today! It is such a blessing to get together with others and discuss scripture!

  13. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Everything about this story is so beautiful! From Abram ready to sacrifice his only son – to Issac meeting his wife, God’s love and grace shines brightly. And to be reminded that God meets us right where we are at, when we are going about our normal routines, so hopeful and such a comfort.

As Collin pointed out – We do not have to earn God’s love or our salvation, it is absolutely free!…but, blessings come with obedience as we see demonstrated in Abram’s life. God said, “take your son…sacrifice him. Abram took his son and went, trusting that God would provide the lamb. Abram believed and he obeyed. Because he did not fear, and did not withhold his only son – God blessed him.

It begs the question – how many times have I missed out on God’s blessings because I fear and don’t give Him my all?

    Dear Shes
Such kindness (& humility) shown by Rebekah at the well. Talking to a stranger. Drawing water for him & his camels. Inviting him into her father’s house. This, I understand, was largely expected in the time & tradition. But could imagine, other than God, how a seemingly chance encounter, the ordinariness of it, would unfold with promises beyond human measure.
And yes, as a woman, with some vanity, I myself was pleased by the immediate gifts of gold rings & bracelets. An ancient (& modern) way to woo & win the attention of a young girl. The show of wealth was another aspect of courtship & noble intention. The Lord God, of beauty things.

I love the story of Issac & Rebekah. It takes just one encounter, a chance meeting (but definitely not chance), crossing paths with the right person to change the course of our day to do day life, or perhaps even the trajectory of our lives. It can lead us to a new job, a steadfast friendship, a fun hobby, a new home, a way to serve, a future spouse, the list goes on but these are just a few things that can dramatically enhance and impact our lives, opening new doors that the Lord has planned for us. They often happen in every day moments but such simple yet beautiful reminders that God is deeply vested in every part of our days and our lives right where we are.

“He’s not waiting to be found; rather, He’s pursuing us right where we tend to be.”

Thank you Father, that you are interested in, orchestrating and guiding all of our days. Help me keep my eyes on you, my heart focused on you so that I am ready and do not miss what you have for me.❤️

I would like to ask you all for to pray for me for courage and the sweet reminder that God is with us at all times and we are not alone…he is our comforter and gives us peace.
I will be having Mohs sugery for basal cell carcinoma on my face between my lip and chin on May 13 at 1:30 CST. I have a lot of anxiety about receiving shots and this will involve several. I had Mohs surgery December 2020 on my nose and it was very painful and remembering that experience has been a difficult reminder anticipating the surgery. My former surgeon was good. It is just my aversion to needles.
This time, I’m using a different surgeon God has provided and I’m comforted by that.
My son is coming today and will take me next week for surgery and that has been a blessing.
I’m so thankful we can be here together listening and praying for each other dear She’s. ❤️

    1. Lynne from Alabama says:

Praying for you, sweet Martha! No one likes someone in their face and it certainly can’t be avoided when you are having Moh’s surgery. May God grant you peace! ❤️

    2. Sharon says:

The doctor makes all the difference! Praying this will be a better experience!

    3. Rachel says:

Will be praying! I wonder if they would give you an rx for EMLA cream? It helps numb…not sure the site would be totally numb, but I think it would take the edge off. You put the cream on the site and cover it with a transparent dressing for at least an hour before the procedure. *shrug* I think it would be worth a try!

    4. Cee Gee says:

Martha, praying along with our sisters for a successful and less painful surgery. Thankful your son will be with you! ❤

    5. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Praying for you Martha! It makes it hard when you know what to expect – but praying that it is not as painful as the last time and that all goes well & that it goes quickly. ❤️

    6. Rhonda J. says:

Oh, I have had many, countless basil and squamous removed, and several mohl’s surgeries! But on the face is the worst! I always wear headphones and put on music or a podcast and just keep my eyes shut! But they seem to numb before the shots these days. The site can be so much bigger than the little bump and the scar large, so I pray that your’s will be small and quick healing for you dear Martha! I always wonder if you moved to the area where your grandkids were …in Texas? But since he is coming I assume you have stayed where you are?! Hugs! I still think of the loss of your husband and having to move forward. (heart)

    7. MARTHA HIX says:

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments, suggestions, and prayers. It is such a comfort and it means so much.

I just wanted to let you know that the Doctor who did the surgery on my nose did not use any topical numbing at all and I had a consultation with him and they don’t use it.

The Doctor who is going to be doing my surgery does apply a topical numbing cream and he also offers the patient an option of taking a Valium if you have a driver that should help lessen anxiety.

Thank you all again for your compassion and prayers. ❤️

    8. Darby Byrd says:

Praying for you sweet Martha. I pray for overwhelming peace as you lead up to it and miraculous lack of pain and discomfort during it.

    9. Tina says:

Martha, lifting you in prayers and prayerful you will know the peace of the Lord, in the lead up to and as you go for the surgery..
Lotd, I pray you take the fear away from Martha, and replace it with your love and peace of heart, Lord, may your joy be her strength, in Jesus’s name.. Amen..
      Hugs to you, Martha❤

    Father God,

Help me to trust You in the same way—with my future, my relationships, and the choices I face.
When the path feels uncertain, remind me that You go before me.

Happy Friday sweet She’s! Had a whole comment written out when BOOM, erased! (frustrated emoji here). Update regarding yesterday’s comment. Most of you know I have an upcoming court date. Well the EX through a curve ball on me. I was scheduled to go to court this coming Tuesday May 13. Sigh….Wednesday I received by mail a change of court order and now its set for June 23! I was very upset, angry, strong emotions… to say the least, as I have been getting myself ready emotionally (praying and having others pray) Now this! On the court order it read he is seeking legal counsel. (red face emoji) I don’t know how he can afford that as I myself can’t. Please pray for my anger inside. And for the new rescheduled court date as it brings back all those yucky emotions. I’m out of time. BUT GOD….as most of you know its Teacher/Staff appreciation week. Let’s just say the teacher and I have felt VERY appreciated above and beyond. These parents have been VERY generous and VERY uplifting and ENCOURAGING! ONE particular card with nice gifts, I will keep forever as BOTH parents, mom and dad wrote kind words in appreciation of their son’s first experience in school. I am SO blessed! God is and will always be good! HE knew I needed this!

    1. Lynne from Alabama says:

Precious Mari, I am so sorry your court date was pushed back! I had already prayed about it this morning. It’s hard having something hanging over your head and getting prepared for it only to have the waiting period extended! God’s got you, girl, and we are all praying! ❤️

So glad you are feeling the love this week at school!

      1. Mari V says:

Thank you Lynne, this means a lot to me.

    2. Rachel says:

He has to seek legal counsel in order to follow his protective order?! Those manipulative shenanigans would make me angry, as well. Praying for your heart as you wait even longer and that God will be your strong advocate no matter what tricks ex has up his sleeves. You are loved!

      1. Mari V says:

Rachel….. thank you. I can feel your righteous anger along with mine. Thank you so much. It means a lot to me..

Sorry to hear that it’s been moved – how frustrating!…but, God’s timing is always perfect. Praying for you Mari – may God give you the peace and patience to continue on this journey. ❤️

      1. Mari V says:

Thank you, Sharon Jersey girl. Once I calmed down, this is what I was thinking that God’s timing is always best.

    5. Adrienne says:

I am sad that the date got pushed back, sweet Mari. I know you have been dreading this, and now the wait is prolonged even more. I’ll write this new date (yuk!) on my planner. ❤️

      1. Mari V says:

I appreciate your prayers Adrienne, it means a lot to me. and thank you for making out of the new court date. YEP, it’s Yuk (sigh). I appreciate your prayers.

    6. Teresa Donley says:

Mari, I’m sorry your court date got pushed back. How frustrating! May God work in the delay. I’m praying for you during the delay and for things to go well for you when the court date arrives. God is with you during it all.

      1. Mari V says:

Yes, it was quite frustrating and having very strong emotions. Thankfully, I have an amazing job and enjoy being with the TK students. They make my heart so happy. I know that my Jesus has me. I appreciate you for praying for me.

    7. Tina says:

Mari V, the lords prayer says …’ They will be done on earth as in heaven’ this may be the Lord’s will, be patient, stay strong as we cover you in prayer til 23 June..

      .

      1. Mari V says:

I will “watch” and “see”. Thank you, Tina. Thy will be done!

    8. Brandi says:

Mari I am really sorry that you are in this situation. There have been so many times I have been able to witness God’s perfect timing in your life! You have shared so many testimonies of His goodness with us! And many times, your testimony was exactly what I needed at the exact time. This circumstance isn’t a setback or an accident. The Father is using it for you and to show Himself mighty on your behalf. I can’t wait to see what awesome things He is doing!! This is just more time to prepare to glorify Him in this situation and to grow stronger in Him! Us Shes- your forever sisters in Christ- can’t wait to bear witness to the fruit, the glory, the miracle this is producing!! Love ya!

      1. Mari V says:

Oh Brandi your words are so encouraging for me right this moment. I like when you said that this is not a setback or an accident. I try to keep in mind that His timing is best and this is no surprise to Him. He already knew this is going to happen and I try to remind myself that. I feel strengthened and loved by all your love and support here SRT.

  22. Tanya Evans says:

The prayer of Abraham’s servant stood out to me! The power of a Godly household and a praying person in a home can affect others. The servant worshiped God and he where to turn for help. This is a beautiful love story and as many of you mentioned a story of provision.
God was about to birth a nation and he hand picked the matriarch and patriarchy.
Rebecca was a brave girl to travel all those thousands of miles to marry someone sight unseen. God was in the details and it was family.

    1. Gwineth52 says:

Ah the bravery, but what I found most interesting & impressive is that the father & brother sought Rebekah’s opinion on when to depart her home.
Yes, God, the ultimate father, was at subtle work. Allowing the future wife & family matriarch symbolic agency.

    2. Gwineth52 says:

  23. Rhonda J. says:

I love that Rebekah was just doing her normal, everyday chore and BAM, she got a new life in an instant! We can look back in our own lives and see the defining moments where everything changed! Of course the Lord was working all things before to line up that way, but how amazing to think about! We so always want to focus on the “what’s not happening” in our lives, but look back and Thank God for the details that brought you to him and led up to it!! (I had a Tshirt on yesterday that says just that “Look back and thank God, look forward and trust God!”)
It was always funny when I would talk to people how I met my husband, one would say- I set you up with him, and another would say—well I sent HER to train with you so I get the credit, lol. So many little things orchestrated by the great Creator of all! I had actively looked for a husband (lol) because I wanted it badly, but until I released it to the Lord, that is when it happened shortly afterwards. All in his perfect timing when trusting, and even when we’re not. (Was Rebekah praying for a husband trusting God or leaving to fate?) Life is funny…But God-
Thank you Lord, that I am putting my trust and hope, and faith in you! I am NOT a believer that it is fate or luck, no, YOU are the God that holds all things together and orchestrates all things for your purposes. We might slow it up and take the short cuts and round about ways, spend years in the desert or valley, or chipping away at the mountain, but you somehow know best for each of us. We thank you Lord, and we look to you today, to let us look for you in the ordinary task. Holy Spirit open our eyes and ears so we can be aware of who might need a Godly word, hug, or encouragement. Make us be the person you want us to be, eagerly and willing. Amen.

Third day. Ram. Thorns. Sacrifice… sound familiar?
    .
I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. God is so good.
    .
Side note… when we started the preschool, our classroom had an “Arch book” about the sacrifice of Isaac. On the first day of class, one of the littles comes to me with that book in hand and asks me to read it to them. How do you explain that to a little person? I took that particular book off the classroom library shelf after class that very day… Heeheehee!

    1. Donna Wolcott says:

Adrienne, your comment, brought up a memory of when my twins were little. We had a children’s Bible and it had a picture of “the scene”, My kids would look for the picture and ask, “what is he doing”. I would quickly change the subject and decided we needed a new children’s Bible.

      1. Adrienne says:

        ❤️❤️

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I so get that, it’s very difficult sometimes to know how to “navigate” through some of the Bible stories when giving them to children. I recently in a sunday school class had the story of Moses and how it was commanded to kill all the babies. I told it as “gently” as I could to this 6 yr old girl, I didn’t skip over nor did I linger on it because I felt is was very important to the rest of the story. She understood, but took it well considering the content. In any circumstance though, it’s good to use discernment, as you both did.

  32. Searching says:

Today’s Scriptures start with the Lord’s provision of the ram in place of Abraham sacrificing his only son (parallel to Christ). There are tears when I read this account of faith, fear (reverence/awe) and provision, as I am reminded of Jesus’ crucifixion.
    .
We see the Lord’s guidance and provision in Abraham’s instructions, the timing of servant’s journey and Rebekah’s trip to the well, His blessing in a clear answer to the servant’s prayer and in Rebekah’s willingness to return with him. We are reminded that the Lord hears our prayers and knows our thoughts as the servant told Laban “But before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah.”
And then there’s Laban – making an attempt to distract the servant away from following through on his job, with Laban saying “take her and go” and then trying to finagle her staying “a few days, at least ten.” This offers a glimpse into Laban’s heart as he later succeeds in a similar deceit with Jacob.

One more thing – ’pure gift’ from the devo referring to God’s promises. I’m glad Collin phrased it that way. One of my pet peeves is when I see free gift. A gift by definition is something given without payment, always free to the receiver. The only time there’s a cost for a gift is when we purchase one to give, like when Christ paid for his gift to us of salvation. Thank you, Jesus.

SEARCHING, I always delete anything as a free gift. I’ve always said there used to be a cost for “free!” Thank God that His free gift of salvation had a cost to Him but He freely gives to everyone!

  34. Laura says:

What a beautiful reminder: We do not need to create or seek out profound, mountain-top experiences to find the Lord at work. He’s in the fields, and He’s at the well. He’s not waiting to be found; rather, He’s pursuing us right where we tend to be.

I consistently call out to God to pursue loved ones who do not follow Him. My heart hurts some days with this reality. My son, who turned his back on the Lord in college, is trying so hard to make his life mean something. He is trying so hard, in his own strength, to figure out his life and to be a good person. It’s hard to watch, as his mom, because the fact that he is doing it alone, without the Lord, makes it so futile. If only….

Today I have a friend who has a son in the same boat as my son. Walked away from his faith in college. BUT, he is dying from late stage cancer. Her faith continues to cling to the Lord, calling out to Him who sees and who saves. I pray with her today, as he will be in surgery this afternoon to remove some of the cancer to give him more time on this earth. More time to call out to God. More time to surrender. Lord may it be so. I know her son, Zach, is being pursued – in the hospital, on the operating table, at home with his parents. Lord, turn Zach’s heart towards You, may he soften it and surrender.

    1. Searching says:

Praying, Laura, for Zach and your son as well.

    2. Adrienne says:

      Oh, Laura… ❤️❤️❤️

    3. Cheryl Blow says:

Laura, praying for Zach and your son.

    4. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Laura I so understand your pain. My two sons have walked away from the faith they were raised in…pursuing life on their own terms. So sad. I will add your son to my (long) list of prodigals. I will also be praying for Zach – how very sad, praying for his parents too. ❤️

    5. Teresa Donley says:

Laura, I’m praying for Zach and for your son, both to return to Jesus. And I’m praying for your friend as she goes through such a scary and heartbreaking time with her son. I pray that God will give you hope, comfortand assurance that He hears your prayers for your son, and will answer.

    6. Tina says:

Praying for your friend and her son and for your mama heart and your son..
The Good news here is that God’s arms are always open.. He will receive them when the penny drops..
God has not forsaken either boy, and He never will..
Hold fast and watch for God at work in them both..
      Amen..❤

  35. Kelly (NEO) says:

What I find amazing about Rebekah’s relationship with her family is that she had a voice, an opinion that was asked for and listened to. From what I understand of that culture and time, that was not the norm.
    .
I love that Abraham’s servant had so much faith in Abraham’s God, yet did not claim a relationship with God himself. If this was Eliezer (Gen. 15:2), he had seen many things that the Lord had done for Abraham and knew God was faithful.

Please continue to pray for my young mama friend, she is finding most apartments in the neighborhoods she wants to live in will not accept her housing voucher. There is a lot of bias/stigma about the “sort” of people who have the vouchers from this program. And while in general they are probable right, it is frustrating that there is no room for exceptions. I could go on,but just please join me in prayer that some place will work out.

    1. Searching says:

Continuing to pray for young mama! ❤️

And yes, I also noticed the listening to Rebekah’s opinion, highly unusual (even today, many times).
