After you finish reading today’s Scriptures, come back and read the essay here to dig deeper into the ways we see this specific promise at work in our day’s reading. Then join your fellow Bible readers in the comments to reflect on and discuss what you’re learning!
In the Gospel of John, Jesus proclaimed that “if the Son sets you free, you really will be free” (Jn 8:36). Those listening to Him were undoubtedly confused. In offering freedom, Jesus was implying they were somehow slaves; but they weren’t enslaved to anyone, legally or physically. How could they be set free if they weren’t in chains?
Scripture is clear that apart from Christ we were once slaves to sin (Jn 8:34) and ruled by death (Rm 6:9). Sin reigned in our bodies (Rm 6:12), and we stood condemned (Rm 8:2). But Jesus went to battle for us against the powers of darkness and came out victorious. His promise of freedom is a timeless one meant for anyone who comes to Christ, but it never depends on our own merit. If the Son frees you, then you are free. While we have indeed been forgiven for eternity, we can experience freedom from the power of sin and the ways of this world in our everyday lives.

My GOD thank you for saving me from sin and being proof
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Abba.
Thank you for sharing Tina!!!
SEARCHING, I said in reply to your comment that I would share more. Here it is:
As soon as I read Hebrews 9:13-14, I was reminded of this verse in Revelation:
Revelation 19:13
New Living Translation
13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.
.
Much love! ❤
“It never depends on my own merits” praise God! I’m free indeed – free from sin, free from past mistakes, free from the past.
How great it is to know that it is not by my own merits, because if it was – how lost I’d be!

Happy Tuesday She’s!
Amen
Thank you, God, that you have removed the chains of sin. Remind me daily that I am free in You.
Morning shes, this season the Lord has been revealing to me another master that is over me, its fear. He has walked me into many areas that I did not know how fearful I can get. It is just the lack of faith to be honest when fear is present. One of the incidents that He has led me to face the crippling fear, indeed is happening tomorrow. I will have an annual performance review for work, and I am just paralyzed. Work has been so stressful and though I over delivered, I tend to be so afraid to ask for compensation. I struggle with self-worth and I tend to not ask anything for recognition. I felt the prompt to speak up, to present the completed tasks, projects, but I am just scared of rejections (which happened before). Could you please pray that I will overcome those enemies and wrong thinking, because I want to have some other decisions and proposals to be discussed tomorrow, and that I find grace with the person and whoever makes the decision above? (they kept that a secret). Not everyone has faith and not everyone deals fairly with employees. I am extremely nervous and anxious. Today I kept having thoughts of rejection, despair and hopelessness, “why bother” sort of thing. It’s the enemy bombarding me with unworthiness again. Thank you so much for your prayers and covering! Be blessed dear sisters.
Oh Mercy- that is indeed the enemy coming against you, and I rebuke that in the name of Jesus!! Keep turning to praise and thankfulness when fear tries to press in. “I am more than a conqueror”
“Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
“Be strong and courageous”
“Cast your cares on the Lord”
“Don’t give the enemy a seat at your table” (is that a verse?)
Covering you with lots of prayer my friend!!
Thank you Rhonda. I needed this ❤️
Praying for you, Mercy.
Mercy, I am praying for you right now. Read Revelation 3 – the letter to the church at Philadelphia. They were weak, but read the promises of God to them – I have opened a door that no one can close. I am praying that over you!!
Praying, Mercy!❤️
Morning, She’s! I couldn’t help but think of this song while reading today, “ Who You Say I Am “ by Hillsong.
“ Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed. I’m a child of God, yes I am! “
I, like many others am praying for the salvation of loved ones. I know that victory will come!
That is exactly the song that came to mind for me too:)
Me too!
…“offered Himself without blemish to cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God…”
(Hebrews 9:14)”.
That’s the verse that caught me this morning. To cleanse my conscience. To confront the tiny transgression as well as the ginormous! Both need clearing. Like giving a tedious customer ahead of me the snake eye! Like making the budget buster purchase when my turn came!
I pray for freedom from the sin that enslaves, in the harm I do others, and the harm I do myself.
As written in John 8: 32, the well worn, powerful prediction: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”.
Have a terrific Tuesday, Shes, trusting the Spirit to search us & supplant an unclean heart with one that beats for Christ.
Thanks be to God!
❤️
Praise Jesus we have been set free!
♥️
Thank you Lord for Your grace! Thank you for the freedom from sin! I’m so happy that this freedom is not based on my merits. What a relief, as I’ll never measure up to the love and goodness of this promise.
My boyfriend is so confused about this. I pray daily for his salvation. He thinks accepting means slavery because he will ‘have” to change. He’s been told so many conflicting things in is past i can’t undo them. I just answer his questions when them come, and let the Holy Spirit do the rest. Please pray with me for his salvation, before it’s too late.
I will be praying for you as you pray for him.
Funny thing is.. he won’t have to change in his own strength, it is God who changes him!
.
Keep on pressing in and leaning on Jesus, Tonya, God hears you..❤️
Hello Tonya
Somewhere along the Christian way our “have tos” can change to “want tos” and change further still to “get tos”.
Be gentle. Be gracious.
❤️
This seems to be a common dilemma for those pressed to accept Jesus..Thats no fun, I dont want rules and restrictions!! It’s hard to explain that it’s not about rules, it’s that we want to honor Him for what he has taken from us, the weight and burden FROM our sins. I have a nephew that always says the same thing. And a niece that thinks following Jesus would be no fun at all. I try to explain the my life is more beautiful than ever being a disciple for Him! Prayers for your boyfriend!
Praying that his heart be softened, and spiritual eyes be opened to the true condition of mankind, that we are indeed so bankrupt and in dire need of the Living Savior.
Thank you Jesus! ❤✝️
I read the next verse in Romans 8, and it really stuck out to me: “You have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do” (NLT). I am no longer stuck under the power of my sinful nature. It’s still there, but I am no longer powerless to keep myself from meeting my obligation to it. My obligation is now to the Spirit living inside of me, and He brings me freedom from my sin.
❤️
“I Am Free” from the Newsboys came to mind. “I am free to live for YOU, I am free” Because of the blood of our JESUS, WE are free indeed! Happy Tuesday sweet She’s love you all very much!
This one of the songs I thought of too.
What a beautiful undeserved freedom and forgiveness we have because of Jesus. When I think of the burden and weight of my sin I think of the required sacrifice in the OT and how just simply because of the birth and death of Jesus, that heavy requirement is gone. But just because the process is different, it does not diminish the sorrow or brokeness of my sin. I can just come before my Jesus on my knees, hands lifted high, with a repentant heart…what a gift. And, I’ll do it again and again and again. His grace, mercy and forgiveness never runs out for me, but it’s not a license to stay in a pattern, to just live in the flesh. I must allow the life and work of Christ to rule in my heart and life, turn away from sin and darkness and be more like Him each and everyday and live in the true freedom and be more like Jesus as everyday passes.
Thank you, precious Savior that you do not leave me where I am and for your forgiveness. Make me more like you. Amen❤️
Yes, amen, perfectly said Wendy!
I forgot to mention again, the podcast…ladies if you have time, please listen. It’s a good word
Hey Wendy, I could not agree with you more. The podcast for week three is stellar.
Stop. Listen. Meditate.
Yes!
Yes, Amen!
The word “sin,” although prominent still in our religious circles, seems to have dropped from vocabulary outside of them. People don’t want to hear the word sin-that accuses them, and points out their wrongs. I mean, if it’s “my truth, and my life:- it is okay. ‘You do you, and I’ll do me”, and we are all good, living our best lives. But the truth is if it is NOT of God, it is of the devil. That makes those just seemingly living a normal life, apart from God, still living in sin. There is no neutral, in between.
As Christians, we have accepted Jesus, and so the curse has been broken, and we have been washed clean. We still will sin, but we are convicted and led to confession. We are ever being sanctified! We are being grown to fruition, producing much fruit, for the Glory of God. We must be pruned, and go through storms, to build our strong roots, but we stand firm.
I am overcome with a love so great, that He frees his children. That my past has been erased in his eyes, and that I too, can forgive myself. I was a thief, liar, adulterer, and murderer, a self-righteous, proud, sinner. I hurt myself, and others around me through my selfish ways. Thank you Lord for the cross. Thank you for the blood that washed me clean. Thank you for leaving the 99, for this one.
Yes, well said.
There is no gray area….it’s black or white.
Others have hated me for not allowing the gray.
.
This ongoing sanctification and pruning is not always fun…it’s hard. But oh my –
I live for the day when I shine in the image of Jesus!
So true, Rhonda. To say something is a sin goes very against the societal norms. No one wants to be held accountable or take actual responsibility for what is truly sin and recognize the black and white. :(
❤Thanks, Rhonda! ❤
Amen. We are ever being sanctified. An elder person once told me, it takes a lifetime and into eternity to sanctify us. I love what you shared today. So deep.❤️❤️
Thank you, Jesus, for giving us true freedom. ❤️
John 8:35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
I am so thankful that I am no longer a creature of sin and a slave. I am free indeed!
The study note above reminded me of Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)!
Chorus:
My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love
Amazing grace
.
We sing this often at church and just sang it Sunday so fresh in my mind! ❤
.
Early appointment so Love, hugs, and prayers for now! ❤
In the podcast, they talked about sanctification. They described it as being more like Jesus today than you were yesterday. That really stuck with me. Am I living my life like that? Am I allowing God to change me from who I was to who He wants me to be? Every DAY? Not just Sundays or Bible Study days, but every day, closer to Him? Obviously I will never achieve perfection, but I should be changing and not staying the same person, enslaved to my flesh and what I want more than what God wants for me. Lord, may I die to myself so that You may change and mold me EVERY DAY into the person I am meant to be, reflecting You. Amen.
So much of the podcast gave food for thought and that exact thought stood out to me as well – am I more like Jesus everyday?
So true, Laura. One of many phrases that stood out for me, which many have heard before. “I must decrease. He must increase.”
❤️
Teary eyes as soon as I read today’s title. Set free – hallelujah! We are reminded in these Scriptures that sin enslaves us and only through Christ can we be set free. Even still, we sin as KELLY (NEO) points out. As Christians, our sins bring shame and conviction. Our attempts to hide our sins are not only ineffective, but they can start a downward spiral that can leave us thinking ‘how did I get here?’ The Holy Spirit, our Helper, can guide us, nudge us, help keep us walking closer to the Lord. Help us remember to recognize & confess our sins to you, Lord.
.
One of my favorite phrases in part of Romans 6:4, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
And also Hebrews 9:14 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Jesus Christ has done so much for me. I’m so grateful.
Amen
Jesus thank You for saving me with your blood shed on the Cross. My son washed clean, white as snow, undeserved and unearned. It is almost too much to comprehend that You would do this for me, a sinner. For all who choose it, who choose You. Amen
I have been feeling a call to ask a friend to allow me to confess my sins to her. I’m a little apprehensive to do that. There isn’t a particular sin that I need to confess. Have any of you done that?
Yes, it is good to have an accountability partner. I have a friend or two I regularly confess my sin struggles with. The Bible commands us to, so I highly encourage you to, even if it feels hard.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16
❤️
Yes, it is humbling but so worth it. The Holy Spirit will help you. Pray about how and when and he will lead you. If God is prompting you to do this be obedient. Pray it’s our best weapon.
Bessie, I encourage you! It is scriptural to confess to God and our fellow believers. Something about doing it out loud is so powerful!! Our church community encourages confession in our life groups and it is wonderful to be met with grace and encouragement there.
Praying, Bessie, for discernment in choosing a friend, that the Lord would give you total confidence as to whether they are trustworthy and nonjudgmental.
I just this past year, confessed something to a friend, (feeling led by God), that I had not shared with anyone. It was really hard and shameful, but it felt good to get it out. And God, made a beautiful confirmation, that it was exactly something that I needed by a revelation of something she said. I have always loved small groups because it is a trusted place for each other to be vulnerable and share our hearts. We had one special meeting where we gave our testimonies to each other, that really went back to our “before Jesus” lives and the sin we were in. It gave such an eye opening impact of how real God can flip our lives with Jesus.
My first reaction, Bessie, is be careful to whom you take a confession. In the wrong hands you could be misinterpreted or made to feel foolish. Your heart is too tender, your vulnerability too precious, to be damaged either directly or inadvertently. I pray the right person presents who is caring, competent, compassionate.
My thoughts only. Pray that the Spirit guides.
Yours in the sisterhood of Shes.
As I was reading today’s verses the song Who You Say I Am by Hillsong Worship was in my thoughts. Who the Son sets free is free indeed. It’s all about the cross which was our freedom by Jesus. SRT ladies have a wonderful day because we know we are free!
A hymn comes to mind through today’s reading. Nothing but the Blood of Jesus
Father God, help me to live in the freedom You’ve given, walking in Your truth, and continually relying on Your strength to resist temptation. May I always remember that true freedom is found in You alone, not in the things of this world. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that I may reflect Your love and live in a way that honors You. Amen
Beautiful prayer, Kimberly. Amen.
❤️
Thank You, Jesus, for Your promise to set me free from the power of sin both now and forever!
God is so good, feeling so weighed down by the weight of my own sin and weakness this morning. Thank you Lord for exactly the words I needed to be reminded that I am not a slave to my sin past or present.
♥️Amen!!
Keep your head to sky, dear katie.
That’s where your help lies.
So glad it isn’t based on my own merit! Thank you, Jesus!!!!
Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, “We can experience freedom from the power of sin and the ways of this world in our everyday lives.”
.
What is troubling is that I know I still sin, so it is beacause I choose to, not because I am still under its power. “Prone to wonder, Lord, I feel it”
.
Christ be with you today, Shes ❤️
Amen, Kelly ❤️ Thankful we have victory in Jesus, despite our sinful nature.
Kelly, that hymn was running through my head several days last week! ☺❤
Hey Kelly
Even Apostle Paul felt the chaos & confusion. Wanting to do right. But still doing wrong. Our very human confessions can come everyday!
I love that hymn.
Praising God for this amazing promise today! One of my favorite radio pastors describes it like this: Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross removed sin’s penalty from us, He conquered sin’s power over us, and one day Ladies, we get to live w/Him in glory free from the very presence of sin. What amazing grace and overwhelming love, like Tina said! Hallelujah and Praise the Lord!!
I think I need to begin with a ..

Funny thing, well, it’s probably not funny at all! I have not always been the person I am today, I have done stuff that to me should not be spoken of until judgement day. I have been places I shouldn’t have been. I have said and done things I am not proud of, I shudder as I write, but here’s the thing, I would say, today, I am a semi good person, by His grace. I am thankful not to be where I was, though not quite where I need to be, I lean on Jesus to get me there!
I lean on the One who saves.
Amen.
.
BUT GOD..
.
He teaches me the TRUTH, the TRUTH in His Word, the TRUTH that sets me free through, and in Jesus.
.
I do not need to hold on to my yesterdays and the person I was, I only need to hold onto Jesus and His gift of freedom. Freedom from all that holds me back, all that brings me shame, all that has had me hiding behind a facade..
Jesus sets me FREE by His actions of great love on the cross!
What a gift.
.
What a relief.

What sacrificial grace.

What great love!

Thank you Jesus! Thank you from this thankful and grateful heart. Thank you for setting me free… Thank you.

Happy Tuesday, my dears, always covered in love and wrapped in prayers for a God present and blessed day..

Much, much freeing love. What a wonderful way to start my Tuesday. Thank you, dear Tina! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m right there with you, sister, and so very thankful ❤️

I never speak of those shameful days…
