Holy One

Open Your Bible

Psalm 71:19-23, Psalm 89:15-18, Isaiah 41:12-20, Revelation 4:1-8

In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.

HOLY ONE: The righteousness and holiness of God

The Hebrew word qadosh is translated “set apart as holy.” It can be used in a general sense to describe places, objects, and people who have been set apart for religious purposes. But as a name, Qadosh, or “Holy One,” describes God as one who is set apart from His creation, from all pagan gods, and from everything else because of His perfection. This name works like a double-edged sword: it reminds us that God is perfectly holy in every way, and it reminds us that we are not. The distinction of being the Holy One belongs to Him alone. This name exalts God above all others in His holiness.

Dearest Father, The Holy One of Israel,
I pray Your healing over my sisters in pain. Touch them with Your mighty healing hand. You said that by your stripes are we healed and therefore we stand on Your word and ask for their healing. In Jesus name we pray . Amen

  8. Linda in NC says:

My praise time is when the light is out and things are quiet and my body is adjusting to a new position. Things seems to only be getting worse. My legs hurt if I try to stand more than a very short time. My spine stimulator trial begins Monday with the temporary insertion of the wires. If my pain is reduced 50-75% then there will be a permanent insertion. We are also seeking another opinion from a physician recommended who may be able to see me the week of the 7th. I really want someone to listen,do a complete work up and give us some answers. All I can to is sit around. Very hard to be any kind of a caregiver right now. Uncover your prayer.❤

    1. Indiana Elaine says:

Prayers for you, Linda. You sound so much like me. I can only stand a very short time. Can only walk a very short distance. Like you, I do a lot of sitting. The physical therapist is frustrated because nothing is working. I feel like my whole summer is slipping away and not able to do anything. Thank goodness an MRI is scheduled for tomorrow, but follow up visit is July 18. I asked to be on the cancellation list.

      1. Lisa H says:

Prayers for you both to get answers and relief. I’m so sorry it’s been so severe.

My comment went to moderation. I just wanted to say happy Friday and thank you so much for your prayers.

  11. Mercy says:

Happy Friday shes. The verses in Isaiah today are so empowering. I was especially touched by “I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive. I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together, that they may see and know, may consider and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this”. Thank you to another wonderful she who mentioned there are specific meanings to each of these trees (what an incredible glimpse and wisdom!!!). I never thought of that and looked some up. The name of Queen Esther, Hadassah: means myrtle, and myrtle is an evergreen tree, whose leaves do not wither (Psalm 1). Surprisingly lots of other evergreens are mentioned here too, like the conifer, the juniper, the pine, the cypress. Maybe that’s why the popular Christmas tree choice is the pine tree to represent the evergreen Christian walk. Cypress and pine trees are often used in construction too, so this is to symbolize strength. And did you know Olive trees are evergreen? For the hardiness zone 3/4 where I am, I am familiar with cold hardy evergreens, but olive tree evergreen is new for me. So many things to unpack. **Update on Tracy: I met her yesterday as she dropped off Anna to our home for a play date. I learnt that Tracy could not sleep peacefully at night because that’s when her oldest Jenny cut her arm. Tracy had a part time job but recently quit because of her daughter’s suic attempts. Jenny has strange sleeping times, she would stay up till 3-4am in her room, slept a little bit and then would go to school at 8am (in fuzzy drowsy state) and came home after school and slept/crashed. She took her to a mental health specialist as well and was told to monitor. That’s some more info on the situation so I have some more directions to pray. Praise God that He led me to them and that she trusted a complete stranger like me to share. Thank you sweet shes for you prayers and love, and sweet encouragement for me and for them. I am a very sensitive person and I could not sleep at night thinking about them, I was sobbing throughout my day. I hope the Lord gives me more strength to journey with them. Be blessed dear sisters.

Good morning sweetie She’s! I send you greetings from the beautiful Pismo state beach! Enjoying our quiet time out here with my kiddos! Psalm 71:20 really stood out to me this morning. “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.” I believe this promise! I’m so thankful to my God, my Jehovah Jireh for making a way to be here for a couple of days with my kiddos. my sweet boy made most of this happen for us. Happy Friday! Please pray as we will travel back this afternoon and it’s about a four hour trip.

    1. Indiana Elaine says:

“ Psalm 71:20 really stood out to me this morning. “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.” Oh Mari V, that really stood out for me too as I continue to fight back pain. It feels like summer will be gone before I get some answers. I was looking around for a harp and lyre to use to praise my Saviour for His promises. Good things began to happen this morning. The MRI for tomorrow that was canceled has been rescheduled do to diligence of my DIL. The facility that was going to do my MRI was deemed out of network. Long story short and many phone calls, it is indeed in network so it is on for tomorrow. Not only was the appointment restored, but the scheduling department that made the error called and apologized. Double praises and thank you for your continued prayers. ❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Praying for you Elaine! Hope you get some results with a fix.

Enjoying this study and your comments!
Kelly (Neo), thanks again for praying and checking in. Today we can feel the prayers working, as Cora actually came with us (my MIL and other daughter) to go to a village 10 minutes away. We enjoyed a little street market and antique/vintage shopping and lunch on the river. And with the great weather today and people in the river, she said we should borrow a paddleboard and return! This was huge because she had a week of staying in, and not doing our little day trips, because she felt too sick and knew she’d feel worse with carsickness and just anxiety of being out. And, it’s hard to explain to family and even her dad that she’s truly feeling sick and we mustn’t hassle her, that she’s not purposely being a “teen on her phone in bed.” (Even though anxiety runs in his family – hard when it’s not YOUR exact symptoms!)
So, today has been an answer to prayers, hoping she can get out again with all of us. (The men today are at Tank Fest at the Tank Museum – a guy thing to do for sure.)
Kelly, praying for your mama, thankful she has some solid direction. And Mercy, praying for Tracy and Jenny and God’s continued guidance to you. Praying for the other requests too…
    Appreciate this community. :)

    1. Rhonda J. says:

That’s how I feel, with chronic pain, it’s hard for others and family to understand just the challenge to go along (move for longer than 30) anywhere. To “walk around” is so hard for me and also makes me hurt more afterwards.
Glad you are having a good time!

      1. Lisa H says:

        ♥️♥️♥️

    2. Mercy says:

Thank you Lisa. Praying your daughter would feel better to join more activities. Have a lovely time in England.

  15. Traci Gendron says:

Psalm 71-22-23 Therefore I will praise you with a harp for your faithfulness my God; I will sing to you with a lyre, Holy One of Israel.
    ~
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you because you have redeemed me.

  16. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

In Psalm 71 it is brought out that God’s righteousness reaches to the heavens – far surpassing the righteousness of men, and that God has done great things. Because of this, the psalmist knew that even though he had experienced great and severe troubles, God would revive him once again. Which led him to sing God’s praise….Oh that I would follow this example and instead of complaining or thinking “why me” – that my heart would go straight to praising my most Holy God!
    .
Psalm 89 – Blessed are those who walk in the light of God’s presence. …this is what I long for – to remember His presence throughout my day, not forgetting Him the moment I finish my “quiet time”. I mean well, I say – “yes, I am going to remember the Lord today”, but then – I don’t.
Psalm 89:19 is a great starting point – rejoice in His name all day long and celebrate His righteousness. God will take hold of my hand, He will help me…if I let Him.

Father God please remind me of Your presence today. Let me never forget that you are holy and I am not. Help me to rejoice in your name all day long and to celebrate your righteousness. For You alone are God, You alone are Holy.

Songs that come to mind this morning – the most obvious, the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy, and the newer praise song by Chris Tomlin – Holy Forever
    .
A thousand generations falling down in worship
To sing the song of ages to the Lamb
And all who’ve gone before us and all who will believe
Will sing the song of ages to the Lamb
    Your name is the highest
    Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all
    All thrones and dominions
    All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all
    And the angels cry holy
    All creation cries holy
    You are lifted high, holy
    Holy forever
If you’ve been forgiven and if you’ve been redeemed
Sing the song forever to the Lamb
If you walk in freedom and if you bear His name
Sing the song forever to the Lamb
We’ll sing the song forever and amen
    And the angels cry holy
    All creation cries holy
    You are lifted high, holy
    Holy forever
    Hear Your people sing holy
To the King of kings, holy
    You will always be holy
    Holy forever
    Your name is the highest
    Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all
    All thrones and dominions
    All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all
    Jesus
    Your name is the highest
    Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all (oh, stands above)
    All thrones and dominions
    All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all
    And the angels cry holy
    All creation cries holy
    You are lifted high, holy
Holy forever (we cry holy, holy, holy)
Hear Your people sing (we will sing) holy
To the King of kings (holy), holy (holy is the Lord)
    You will always be holy
    Holy forever
    You will always be holy
    Holy forever

The verses that stood out to me today came from Isaiah 41. Verses 18-19 are a sweet picture of showing His provision in desolate environments. Vs 19 specifically intrigued me with all of the different trees living together and so I went and looked them up. A lot of those trees have a special meaning! I wish I could upload a picture of my sticky notes to show you each one. God is so intentional!

    1. Tanya says:

  19. Ashley M. says:

It might feel intimidating to approach a God who is so pure and set apart. But the beautiful truth of the gospel is that through Jesus, we’re invited into the presence of Qadosh. We don’t have to shrink back in fear—we get to come near in reverence. Understanding God as Qadosh reminds us not to take His presence lightly. It calls us to worship Him in awe and live lives that reflect His holiness—not in perfection, but in pursuit.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen, well said! Those are the words I need tomorrow on this topic for my group!

    2. Sandi says:

      Yes,pursue God

  21. Tanya says:

    “Holy,Holy,holy,Lord God,the Almighty, who was,who is,and who is to come. Rev 4:8.

    G-d is completely other.

A more modern spelling of the word, Qadosh,is Kadosh. In some of the more modern Jewish prayer books it is spelled with the K.

Numbers in scripture have meaning. The number 3 is very powerful. It means, divine

completeness, perfection and wholeness. Some Christian theology interprets this 3 fold repetition as indicating, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
When words are repeated three times, there is a fancy name for this called the “Emphatic Semitic Triplet”.
My study Bible says: “Although the Lord is totally different from us- He is perfect- in His mercy He still reaches down to take care of us. To say the word holy twice in Hebrew is to describe someone as ” most holy” .To say the word holy three times intensifies the idea to the highest level.”

When Jews pray these 3 words:
Kadosh, Kadosh,Kadosh or Holy,Holy,Holy in description of the Lord, we rise on our toes with each repetition. There is a lot body posturing in Jewish prayer. One prayer called the Amidah, you walk three steps forward and three steps backwards because you are entering the presence of the Sovereign of The Universe. The King. I actually like this because it reminds us WHO we are talking to. Not all Jews do this like not all Christians raise their hands or kneel.

I need to stop typing on my phone.

    1. Brandi says:

      I love that!

    2. Sandi says:

      Holy,holy,holy…the trinity.

    3. DW says:

Love this! We’ve been to Israel 3 times and I am always intrigued and convicted with the posture, reverence and intensity of many of the Jewish pray-ers at certain places.
I always appreciate your insights so much!!❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, agree. The reverence, and the posture are so powerful! I really can’t imagine falling on my face, But I feel it in my heart so many times. I have been getting on my knees more and more. He is worthy of our submission to his Holiness.

        Thank you Tanya, great wisdom!

  24. Rhonda J. says:

    GM She’s!

This study came perfectly to give me the right frame of mind for my new small group study of practicing prayer! Because our prayer life must start at knowing Who His is. And then knowing he is worthy and deserving of all honor and praise, with no one above him or like him. He is only God alone.
Yet, he is intimate and loves us. That is why we can trust him and his goodness. He is for us, not against us. It is us that are clueless. Until we are in his word, knowing all the ways he called a people his own and were with them even though they strayed to their own flesh. He was there through and through. He lifted persons up and enabled them. He spoke things and miracles happened.
He is the Holy One, yet we are made Holy through Jesus, by his blood. To be saved and his. How can we not fall on our knees, and cry out His righteousness?! I was lost, and now I am found! Praise God, Praise God!! Let my life show how grateful I am by all my days, serving and telling of you! Letting you use me Lord for your hands and feet. My suffering be for you, my joys be for you. My witness be for you Holy One!!

I am excited that we are having baptisms at the beach on Sunday! What started out as about 30 people is well over 100 now! They have asked me to pray with people in line with a team!! Oh what a privilege, and today’s scripture hit me that I will give that to them or read it! (Maybe I can memorize it by then?) Psalm 89:15-18!

    15 Happy are the people who know the joyful shout;

Lord, they walk in the light from your face.

16 They rejoice in your name all day long,

and they are exalted by your righteousness.

    17 For you are their magnificent strength;

by your favor our horn is exalted.a

18 Surely our shield belongs to the Lord,

our king to the Holy One of Israel.

SO, SO Good!!! HAPPY am I that KNOW the JOYFUL SHOUT!! Walking in YOUR light!! How can I not rejoice daily! Even through sorrow and the valley, I know you are working all things for us!!

    1. Carol J Mylin says:

Thanks for sharing, Dear Rhonda! I well remember when you would ask for prayer “for courage to pray aloud”! My, how our God has answered your prayers! And also, you were “Drawn to minister at the jail.., but were feeling timid”… praise His Name for the work He is doing through your life, dear friend!!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I KNOW!! And now that is why I am so passionate to step out in faith, and being uncomfortable…and trying again and again!! He is SO, SO good!!! I am so grateful and see His power!! Thank you Carol!! And I will not forget how you talked with me when I was discouraged!! Love you friend!! You have so much wisdom!

    2. Brandi says:

Amen sweet Sister! So awesome to see Him at work! And He allows us to be a part of it. He desires us to! How amazing. Your words lifted me up today. Thank you!

I love how God has/is making you a woman of prayer! I promise not to reference the Deep Dish podcast every ingle days, but their second episode is on prayer. It’s called “Conversations With God” (with Nancy Guthrie) and it was SO good. They talk a lot about how to turn what we read in Scripture into prayer so that our prayers have depth and richness – and we know we’re praying God’s will when we’re praying His words. ❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I will definitely look this episode up! Thank you Rachel!

    4. Cheryl Blow says:

‘Very high’ is footnoted as ‘to the height of heaven’ – which is endless, no doubt. Again, we can’t describe God or His attributes.
    .
The verses in Isaiah tell us that the Lord protects, helps, redeems, listens, provides, will not forsake us and goes to endless lengths to get our attention. His patience with us on display every day, praying all will hear and respond to the Holy One.
