He Will Make a New Covenant

Open Your Bible

Jeremiah 31:31-34, Ezekiel 36:24-30, Ezekiel 36:33-38, Ezekiel 37:25-28, Hebrews 8:6

Our modern, western minds are prone to conflate “covenant” with “contract.” We’ve been trained to think transactionally. We’re fluent in if/then and cost/benefit analysis. It’s no wonder that the audacious grace of God perplexes us.

The Bible is many things, one among them the unbelievably beautiful story of God’s lopsided covenant with the people He’s made. The Old Testament showcases this covenant through the nation of Israel.

They were small. God made them big promises.
They were chronically unfaithful. He remained faithful.
They were prone to wander. The Lord surrounded them with His presence.
They were whiny. He remained wonderful.

Hear His resolve.

“Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the LORD’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
—Jeremiah 31:33,
emphasis mine

God’s goal has never been ownership but relationship. For reasons that rightly boggle our finite brains, He knew Israel would fall dreadfully short. He called them His own anyway.

Though Israel was set apart and unique among the peoples of the earth, this radical covenant isn’t contained to the pages of the prophets. Jesus ushered in a better covenant, built on God’s old pattern of lavish love and grace. As the writer of Hebrews reminds us, “But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been established on better promises” (Hebrews 8:6).

The new covenant isn’t better because the old covenant was broken. God kept His promise then. He will keep His promise now. But Jesus made a way for lopsided grace to extend to all who call on His name. There has never been better news! We are the partakers of a new and forever covenant. The only signature on the contract is Jesus’s, signed in His blood.

We are small and relatively insignificant. Yet Christ died for us that we might receive the humungous gift of forgiveness.
We are unfaithful. Yet He will never turn His back.
We are prone to wander. So He leaves the ninety-nine.
We are whiny. He is our Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, and Mighty God.

God promises. We receive. God pours out His grace, and we bathe in it.

Don’t let your heart default to any other way of thinking this Advent season. Don’t try to drum up His favor. It’s yours already. Don’t make yourself weary trying to hold up your end of the bargain. You don’t serve a bargain-striking God. God’s grace is a gift, unwrapped and waiting for you to enjoy. You don’t have to earn it. You get to enjoy it. The truest wonder of this wondrous season is Jesus. Thank Him today for His lopsided grace.

I am so thankful and grateful for the unending grace I have received and have yet to receive. I look back at parts of my life in awe not knowing how I survived or got through it. Looking back over what God has brought me through helps remind me me that He will bring me through much more/ or much smaller things as well.

***I posted previously by accident, before I could finish and edit**
Every day I am amazed at how much I do not understand and appreciate the character of God and the reason and need for Jesus. I could write a book on what I have learned during this Advent study. I found I did perceive God’s covenant as a contract. The devotion for this day really stuck me. I worked a very long day yesterday, * the 15th, I’m catching up on my reading) and sat down to watch, “Call the Midwives” before going to bed. I found myself feeling guilty for not reading my Bible. I read my Bible regularly and know enough that God does not speak to me in away that would make me feel guilty. I did sense that He was telling me to relax and enjoy some down time. I do not have to be doing something no matter how “good” it may be. I can rest in his grace. In our Exodus passage, I noted all the times God said, “I will” and the passage reminded me that I don’t have to continually stive to be better, stronger, and more holy. God will put a new hear and spirit in me. I can rest knowing I have peach with God through Jesus Christ.

  9. Diane Wikler says:

Yes, Lord! Thankful for his grace.

  10. Kerry Burkhart says:

I am catching up on my reading this morning. Oh, the ways of the Lord learning. I realized that I did relate a covenant to a contract. And our devotional, for this reading, I also realized that while most of the th,ings I do are good, I feel that I have to constantly be doing something that I can’t remain.Idle. after working fourteen hours yesterday, I wanted to relax and watch an episode of one of my favorite shows called the midwife.

Lord God, thank you for the new and better covenant. May your Church taste and see this covenant as your unfathomable goodness.

I really needed this devotional today. I think so often I try to be the best Christian I can be. I try to do it in my own strength. Then I feel guilty when I don’t measure up. I was never meant to measure up, I can’t. When God looks at me, he doesn’t see my mess ups, only Christ’s righteousness.

I love it so much that ERIN gave such a detailed spelling out about lopsided grace. What choice description lol. I used to make a lopsided cake once, like a leaning tower and it ended up on the floor, we had a laugh. Thank you ERIN. Amen to “Our modern, western minds are prone to conflate “covenant” with “contract.” We’ve been trained to think transactionally”.
    .
The devil is in the details, isn’t he, in the fine prints that we tend to skip. If we don’t know or understand all the details, we can miss out the benefits or suffer great loss. Watch out pilgrims, watch out baby Christians, satan will come and ask us softly “did God really say….? Remember what you did last week, last month, ..ten years ago? Blah blah? How can you be worthy with such blah blah blah?”. Satan is sifting us, to test our knowledge and understanding of the fine details. Learning is in the details. Ignorance and confusion has its cost. We need to devote our time to learning the finer details of the Bible, along with the wealth of knowledge our SRT staff and writers offer, and the wonderful collective women here with their vast sources of wisdom and unique perspectives in various walks of life – it is a gift. We are nourished here. Blessed are those who seek wisdom and knowledge consistently to put into practice. So when satan comes and tests us in the details, “did God really say..?” you answer back “lopsided grace”. Arm yourselves with the word little by little everyday (the armour).
    .
“Grace covers the multitude of sins” (Amen CAROLINE BRIDGES ❤️- I was taught the same and thought the same way you did in a legalistic church for years, that stresses on earnings God’s favors, full of heavy burdens, no joy, no peace, and then someone said to me God brings them love, joy, peace and I said I had none at that environment – and the church is now shut down by God’s justice- relief).
    .
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” Romans 3:23–24. “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy” Titus 3:5. We are in good and righteous standing through Jesus. Do we know that? How about the sin last week? The gossiping and the slipping cuss words? Is God’s grace big enough to cover that? Do we know? If we don’t, it will be a lot of efforts to mouth control. I learn a new word “mouth control” from Joyce Meyers lol (she is so funny, she said no matter how good we are at mouth control, one day we will slip lol). Then guilt, shame and discouragement come in, and things can add up real fast to drag us down the mire, spiraling to second guessing God’s goodness and His unchanging characters. Lopsided grace- that vast and inexhaustible grace which leads me to repentance and back to paths of righteousness again and again, that grace is mine! However, something to note, God’s Love does come with discipline (burning trials for He is a consuming fire that burns the dross). And discipline does come with pain. God disciplines those He loves. “He chastens everyone He accepts as a son” (Hebrews 12:6). Discipline “seems painful rather than pleasant,” but produces “righteousness and peace” (Hebrews 12:11). Let’s not confuse “love” with “no pain” like the way the world and culture mislead us. Discipline is not to punish, but to save from the ways to hell that are paved with good intentions. Pain is not proof of His absence or rejection, pain is proof of sonship (“If you are without discipline… then you are not legitimate children” Hebrews 12:8). How I wish I knew this on my early days. God’s discipline aims to correct sin and build character, not to punish us. “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline” Revelation 3:19. Thank God for His grace, for His forgiveness, His favor, His guidance, His discipline.
    TINA- ❤️ so good.
TRACI- praying for wisdom, patience and peace with your stepdaughter. May the Lord bring healing of wounds and softening of hearts.

  35. Kristy says:

Flipping through Ezekiel I have highlighted each time “Then they will know that I am the Lord”. Seeing it highlighted page after page throughout the whole book gave me goosebumps. I think if I could sum up my heart for 2025 it would be how incredibly grateful I am that the Lord has revealed Himself to me. I could not have got through this year without him. That he wants to be known by me, why?? I am so unworthy. That lopsided grace. I don’t deserve a bit of it, but he bathes me in it. Each day. I am overwhelmed by this day after day. How can people make it a second in this dark world without him? Breaks my heart knowing they don’t have to but are. I wouldn’t last a second. I can’t imagine how hopeless it would feel. Lord open their eyes, bind the enemies lies. May those walking around without you see your love this Christmas season, may they feel your presence and recognize their need for you Jesus and turn to you.

Side share:) Our oldest is a freshman at college. She text me just a little bit ago telling me she has a ton of laundry to bring with her and could I have the washer and dryer empty for her today. TODAY? I was expecting her tomorrow. So I am thrilled, and she is home for an entire month. My heart is so full!!

    1. Yvonne Waldron says:

Thank you for this. Your comment brought tears to my eyes, because I completely feel the same. I just wanted you to know that your comment touched me. Merry Christmas

    Amen and amen!

On HRT Bob Bunn said, “During this Advent season, we celebrate what the Israelites were waiting to see. They looked for the Messiah, for the new covenant to be established. And Jesus proved to be worth the wait. And because God kept His promise more than 2,000 years ago, we can know that He still cares and that He is still at work in the world today.

That’s the message of the Messiah. That’s the message of Advent.”
Jesus is definitely worth the wait! Amen again!

So thankful for His mercy and grace. I surely don’t deserve it. Yet, He saw fit to send His Son! I can scarcely comprehend that. Jesus is my savior. I am His-no matter what. What a beautiful promise we have in Him.

  45. Rhonda J. says:

Will we ever just be so thankful of the cross that it is our altar, the center of every day? A problem comes- lay it at the altar. Our worries, our cares, our desires, relationship…lay it at the altar of Jesus.
Last week we talked about Hope…which is where it starts, with a babe in a manager that the WEARY world could rejoice. This week we are on Peace. As we went to jail yesterday HOW can we talk about peace to ladies waiting anxiously to know their future…they have to face the judge. Their freedom is at stake, their family is waiting on them to come back. Yet we were to discuss having peace this week! But God–he does give us peace if we look at the cross and the NEW covenant! We can have peace once we believe in the Hope of Jesus, because that settles it. He comes into our lives, our heart, and we can be assured not only of eternal life with him, but He is God within us, the Prince of Peace. We replace anxiety and stress, contrite whiny hearts with laying it at the altar, at his feet. “Casting our cares ON him and he will SUSTAIN us. He will not let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22).
WE can have peace because we believe God gave us a new covenant for his Spirit to be in us! Are we laying our own problems, fears, worries, bitterness and lost family at the cross.
We listened to “At the Altar” by Elevation Rythem both yesterday and in church as an invitation to lay it down. Everything. Today, tomorrow, and on. Maybe right now and again in an hour. But lay it down, and be done, it is given to him, and you are free to have peace in trust and faith!

Tosha had good news at court. They prosecutor failed to get information they needed, yet to my understanding it was only delayed to reconvene in Mar. So she will remain in jail, whether she deserves it or not. Yet, she was happy and praising God for his protection and thanking us for standing by her in prayer. She has a hope and peace that gives us all amazement. Please keep her in your prayers to keep strong as she grieves the loss of her son, misses her other young son, and everything she knew till the surprising arrest.

I pray we will all pray on what we need to lay at the altar this week.

    1. Adrienne says:

PTL for Toshas’s “good news” at court. Prayers for peace while she grieves and waits. ❤️

    2. Rachel (CO) says:

Praise the Lord! And thank you for sharing about Tosha’s grief for all she has lost and so suddenly. Probably should have thought of that on my own, but I had not and was very narrowly praying just for the court date. I appreciate the more broad picture and will pray better now! Hug her for us – even just with words❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

OH how that just touched my heart, (and Adrienne’s comment too!) you saying that and to give her a hug from you. She would just be so touched, I will tell her!

And Mercy! thank you too, so sweet. I will tell her ya’ll are holding her up in prayer. I didn’t mention this, but her dad had a slight stroke…all this is really getting to him. But he is improving.

Oh my word. Big hugs and much love to Tosha. What a warrior and a positive attitude to admire, totally reminds me of Paul and Silas singing praise in prison under wrongful arrest (guilty until proven innocent- may God give clues and evidence to shine the light into darkness for the judge).

    .
God knew Sharon would fall dreadfully short. He called her is own anyway…This boggles my mind! How God can be so gracious, loving and kind when a day doesn’t go by that I (unintentionally) sin against Him. I so often feel like Paul when he said – “For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7:15-20. I feel so convicted when I sin and can’t stop asking for forgiveness, but here’s the thing – I’ve already been forgiven! God desires a relationship with me – a sinner saved by grace. He never turns His back, He is our Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace and Mighty God!

Whenever I catch myself sinning the words of the chorus to this song come to my mind: Indescribable by Chris Tomlin…
    .
From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
    Creations revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
    All exclaiming
    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God
    All powerful, untameable
Awestruck, we fall to our knees
    As we humbly proclaim
    You are amazing, God
Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go?
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light?
Yet, conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
    None can fathom
    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God
    All powerful, untameable
Awestruck, we fall to our knees
    As we humbly proclaim
    You are amazing, God
    You are amazing, God
    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God
    All powerful, untameable
Awestruck, we fall to our knees
    As we humbly proclaim
    You are amazing, God
    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God
    Incomparable, unchangeable
YOU SEE THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART AND YOU LOVE ME THE SAME (emphasis mine)
    You are amazing, God
    You are amazing, God

Thank you Father God for sending your Son to fulfill Your covenant. Thank you for Your grace that is greater than all of our sin. Thank you that you see the very depths of our hearts, and You still love us the same. You truly are an amazing God.

As a gentile believer in Jesus, I have been adopted into the family of God and His promises are for me too. And you. Repeatedly stated beyond today’s Scriptures:
    Jeremiah 24:7
Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.
    .
    Jeremiah 32:38
    They shall be My people, and I will be their God;
    .
    2 Corinthians 6:16
And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”
    .
    Hebrews 8:10
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
    .
    Revelation 21:3
And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.
    .
    Hallelujah!

  61. Jessica Thomas says:

Love the idea of a lop sided grace! Its a busy season and there is so much i should do, but what i choose to busy myself with does not impact Gods love for me!

  62. Susan Burley says:

The second part of Ezekiel 36:36 reminds me of a keychain my Dad carried around when I was younger. It read God said it. I believe it. That settles it. How amazing is it that we serve a God who will do everything He promises?

  63. Ada McCloud says:

    What a beautiful reminder.

  68. Tina says:

We are small and relatively insignificant. Yet Christ died for us that we might receive the humungous gift of forgiveness.
We are unfaithful. Yet He will never turn His back on us
We are prone to wander. So He leaves the ninety-nine.
We are whiny. He is our Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, and Mighty God.
    .
These words really touched me. So, ERIN DAVIS, if you don’t mind, I am personalising them for me!
    .
I am small and relatively insignificant. Yet Christ died for me so I would receive the humongous gift of forgiveness.
    .
I have been and continue to be unfaithful in words, actions and deeds, yet, He will never turn His back on me.
    .
I am prone to wander, so He leaves the ninety nine… in search and pursuit of me.
    .
I am whiny, boy am i, but He is my Wonderful Councelor, my Prince of peace, and oh how blessed am I, He is my Mighty God..
    .
    BUT GOD..

      Me too, Tina!!

Same, Tina, same here ❤️ What a mighty, forgiving, faithful, loving, patient God we serve.

    3. Rhonda J. says:

You made me laugh…I am whiny, boy am I! lol. Yep, oh how contrite and contrary I am wanting what I want, forgetting what I need. Everything is testing me to put my reliance on God…the simplest things that make me whine!

  69. Adrienne says:

Thank you for the great devotional, Erin Davis.
    .
While I did not focus on the covenant as much… Verse 34 of the Jeremiah reading really stood out tome… ALL will know Him. With all the materialism of this season, it gives me comfort that ALL will know and see… maybe not in the way we think people should see, but…
    .
It also gives me great hope for our many prodigals. ❤️
    .
Have a beautiful day, sweet sisters. Even though we are NOT faithful, He is. What a great covenantal promise!

    1. Wendy B says:

      ❤️

    2. AZ Walker says:

TheJeremiah scripture stood out to me too! Praying for our prodigals.
