Looking up a summary-
Key Meaning
Faith over works: God declared Abram right because he believed, long before the law of Moses existed.
A free gift: God put righteousness on Abram’s record as a gift of grace for trusting His word.
The Apostle Paul unpacks Genesis 15:6 across multiple books to demonstrate that salvation has always been by grace through faith:
Romans 4: Paul explains that Abram was declared righteous before he was circumcised. This proves that God’s blessing is a free gift for everyone who believes, not just those who follow religious rituals.
Galatians 3: Paul uses Abram’s story to show that true “children of Abraham” are those who live by faith, rather than those who rely on keeping the law.
James 2: James balances this by explaining that Abram’s faith was not just intellectual. His willing obedience later in life proved that his initial faith was alive and genuine. The Context of Genesis 15 To fully understand this moment, it helps to see what Abram was experiencing:
The context
Fear and Doubt: Abram had just rescued his nephew Lot in a dangerous military battle. He was fearful of retaliation and deeply discouraged because he was aging and still had no biological heir.
God’s Shield: God appears in a vision, telling Abram not to fear because He is his “shield” and “very great reward.”The Stargazing Promise: God takes Abram outside and tells him to count the stars, promising that his descendants will be just as countless. Despite the biological impossibility, Abram completely trusts God’s word.
IN fear and doubt…do I put my total trust in the Lord? I think we usually want OUR vision of the outcome, so we can pray to God, and beg for our outcome…BUT what we should do is pray for help, strength, and faith, to trust in him. Yes, we are told to ask for what we want, so yes, our hopes and desires DO matter. But, we have to trust that God sees and knows more than we do.
When I was on the phone with my sister immediately after they heard the shot that would take Savannah’s life, I couldn’t speak…all I could say was Jesus…over and over and over in my mind, and on my lips for more than 20 minutes. I was just knowing his name was all that mattered in that traumatizing moment. There were no other words. It’s so true that all we can do is groan in the Spirit. So in fear and panic, and trauma..I cry out in faith. And I think when the plane is going down, we see, most people pray when they have never prayed before.
But in the more, everyday fear, in obstacles, afflictions, worries I think we tend to rely on ourselves. We don’t want to have “silly” faith in a “god.” People look upon that as ludicrous and stupid. But we OF faith know that we can trust OUR God with everything, big and small.

From NKJV Enduring Word Study Bible:
“When Abram believed in the Lord, specifically in God’s promise, God credited (accounted) this belief to Abram as righteousness. This is one of the Bible’s clearest expressions of the truth of salvation by grace through faith. It is the first time the Bible uses the words ‘believe’ and ‘righteousness.’ This is the New Testament gospel in the Hebrew Scriptures that would be quoted four times in the New Testament (see Rom. 4:1–3, 9–10, 19–24; Gal. 3:5–7).”
.
And remember the example of Abraham in the study of James? Warren Wiersbe NKJV Study Bible had this note on Genesis 15:6-
“The Hebrew word translated ‘believed’ means ‘to lean your whole weight upon.’ Abram leaned wholly on the promise of God and the God of the promise. We are not saved by making promises to God but by believing the promises of God. In the gospel of John, which was written to tell people how to be saved (John 20:31), the word for ‘believe’ is used nearly 100 times. Salvation is the gracious gift of God, and it is received by faith (Eph. 2:8, 9).
Later, Abram proved his faith by his works when he offered Isaac on the altar (Gen. 22, James 2:14–24). Abram was not saved by obeying God, or even promising to obey God, but his obedience proved his faith. Sinners are not saved by faith plus works but by a faith that works.”

Hey everyone! just getting caught up on yesterday, thank you for the prayers! Praying for you susan and Tom and Danielle! I read a lot of your comments about growing up in church and that was me! I struggle very much with fear of being a Pharisee. the podcast speaker said he relates with being the older son in the prodigal son story. me too! it kinda reminded me, that when I am struggling with feeling overlooked, it’s not because I am God’s enemy or a Pharisee. it’s not because God’s mad at me. I’m just the older son who he has always been with. no drama. just steady work.
Thank you for your prayers and comments. I was able to be mostly peaceful during the MRI. They let you pick music and I chose Solomon Ray, which was soothing as he sang truth. I will see my neurosurgeon on Wednesday.

I was looking a little deeper on Genesis 15:6 and this stood out to me.
d. He believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness: The faith that made Abram righteous wasn’t so much believing in God (as is usually meant by believing in God), as it was believing God. Those who only believe in God (in the sense of believing He exists) are merely on the same level as demons (James 2:19).
James 2:19 You believe that God is one, Good! Even the demons believe – and they shudder.
Believing in God vs believing God. That’s good❤️
Thank you, Jane for that clarification!
I don’t know about anyone else, but for years I wondered about the salvation of all of those that came before Christ. They came before they had the opportunity to believe. And this verse helped me understand how those of great faith in God, prior to the death, resurrection, and Ascension of Christ will be with God in eternity.
Yes, I always wondered as well for many years! This is good clarification.
Yesterday was so intense. At one point they came and told us Tom wouldn’t make it and to say our goodbyes. I started talking to him. It wasn’t ten minutes and his numbers changed and they told us he was stable enough to transport to a bigger hospital. We are now in Eugene. Tom is stable, but still very serious. our granddaughter, who is a nurse, and another son arrived from TX and are with us. Thank you so much for praying! I am the Susan whose son Andy passed away 2 1/2 years ago.
