Grace Day

Open Your Bible

John 1:14

Take today to pause from the busyness of the season to catch up on your reading and make space for prayer. Consider making time for one of the ideas from your lists on page 16–17 to practically and tangibly embody the Advent rhythms of waiting and celebrating.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
—John 1:14

This has been a very challenging year for me, but I do feel like I am beginning to emerge from the pit of despair that engulfed me for much of the year. I want to give praise and glory to God for that! And to encourage those of you who are still struggling (and I am sure I will struggle again, because that is life until Jesus returns for us). Keep your eyes on him! The light is returning soon, for tomorrow is the shortest day of the year.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Thank you, Margaret, for sharing your praise and encouraging the rest of us! ❤

Hubby was splitting wood and hurt his eye yesterday. He had to sleep with his head elevated, and so slept on the couch. He came in earlier and was, like, “I’ve got so much to do.” I asked if there was anything I could do to help. He told me to stop asking him that. (It’s gonna be a LONG weekend!) One of the prescription drops seem to make him feel nauseous. I got out some essential oils, and he pushed them aside. It’s so aggravating. I know he is aggravated and mad at himself, but come on!!
    .
He has a follow up appointment on Monday (8am, Central). There was too much trauma for the doc to see it all clearly. Laser surgery may be required. Hope not!! (For hubby’s sake and for mine!!)
    .
I’ve talked to him many times about wearing eye protection, but does he LISTEN TO ME?!?!?! NO!!!
    .
I just felt like complaining. Pray for me too! It’s hard to be patient with him. I would like to spend the day elsewhere!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Ooph! Bless you both! Prayers for healing without surgery and for patience for you! Praying also that God opens his ears to hear those disrepectful words coming out of his mouth and helps him not to lash out at you. Hugs, sistet! ❤

The Word became flesh….Jesus came to walk among us. To feel our feelings firsthand. To get a cold. To run barefoot to his human dad. To hug his human mom. To sleep on a mat (or whatever they used?). To hear His parents tell stories of Abraham and Moses and David. Could you imagine? God in the flesh is listening to the story that He wrote! Amazing! What a Savior! Just to die an excruciating death….for me and my ugly sinful self. Thank You Jesus! Thank You God! (Same person…no confusion)

    1. KathyB says:

“God in the flesh listening to the story that He wrote!”

Good morning my She’s! I have been faithfully reading along every morning with ya’ll! Today is my last day on my short trip with family and I drive a couple of hours back to Nashville, then fly back home this evening! Please pray for my back pain again to not give me too much trouble! Thank you!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Oh, that was a quick visit! I meant to ‘tag you’ in my comment and tell you I’ve missed you, but alas, I forgot by the time I constructed everything. ☺❤

Continued prayers for your back and for safe travels. Beautiful day here in the south!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        It’s nice to be missed
It was a very quick visit! My poor dad isn’t doing so well. He fell today and his wife could barely get him up. He can barely breath, and feels horrible. Although it has been years in this condition, I always think it couldn’t get any worse.
I did get to have fun with my son and gf, my sister and her two kids, and 2 grand nieces! My nephew got to call us and talk for an hour, it was bittersweet.

    2. Mari v says:

      Praying sweet lady

    3. LindaK says:

Do you have any pain medication that you can take in advance. I don’t know if you’ve tried it but at times I sit on an ice pack and put one on the back. I pray a lot when I travel.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I do have extra but I try to avoid if I can b/c of the tummy issues it presents! God seems to see me through! I dreaded flying late tonight, but I am doing good thus far! I really know that God loves when we ask our sisters to join in lifting us up and answers us!

thank you Mari, Adrienne and Lynn and others! So appreciated!

JOHN MACARTHUR NKJV STUDY BIBLE NOTES:

    John 1:14-
“the Word became flesh. While Christ as God was uncreated and eternal (see notes on v. 1), the word “became” emphasizes Christ’s taking on humanity (cf. Heb. 1:1–3; 2:14–18). This reality is surely the most profound ever because it indicates that the Infinite became finite; the Eternal was conformed to time; the Invisible became visible; the supernatural One reduced Himself to the natural. In the incarnation, however, the Word did not cease to be God but became God in human flesh, i.e., undiminished deity in human form as a man (1 Tim. 3:16). dwelt. Meaning “to pitch a tabernacle,” or “live in a tent.” The term recalls to mind the OT tabernacle where God met with Israel before the temple was constructed (Ex. 25:8). It was called the “tabernacle of meeting” (Ex. 33:7; “tabernacle of witness”—LXX) where “the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend” (Ex. 33:11). In the NT, God chose to dwell among His people in a far more personal way through becoming a man. In the OT, when the tabernacle was completed, God’s Shekinah presence filled the entire structure (Ex. 40:34; cf. 1 Kin. 8:10). When the Word became flesh, the glorious presence of deity was embodied in Him (cf. Col. 2:9). we beheld His glory. Although His deity may have been veiled in human flesh, glimpses exist in the Gospels of His divine majesty. The disciples saw glimpses of His glory on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:1–8). The reference to Christ’s glory, however, was not only visible but also spiritual. They saw Him display the attributes or characteristics of God (grace, goodness, mercy, wisdom, truth, etc.; cf. Ex. 33:18–23). the glory as of . . . Father. Jesus as God displayed the same essential glory as the Father. They are one in essential nature (cf. 5:17–30; 8:19; 10:30). only begotten. The term “only begotten” is a mistranslation of the Gr. word. The word does not come from the term meaning “beget” but instead has the idea of “the only beloved one.” It, therefore, has the idea of singular uniqueness, of being beloved like no other. By this word, John emphasized the exclusive character of the relationship between the Father and the Son in the Godhead (cf. 3:16, 18; 1 John 4:9). It does not connote origin but rather unique prominence; e.g., it was used of Isaac (Heb. 11:17) who was Abraham’s second son (Ishmael being the first; cf. Gen. 16:15 with Gen. 21:2, 3). full of grace and truth. John probably had Ex. 33–34 in mind. On that occasion, Moses requested that God display His glory to him. The Lord replied to Moses that He would make all His “goodness” pass before him, and then as He passed by God declared “The LORD . . . merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth” (Ex. 33:18, 19; 34:5–7). These attributes of God’s glory emphasize the goodness of God’s character, especially in relationship to salvation. Jesus as Yahweh of the OT (8:58; “I AM”) displayed the same divine attributes when He tabernacled among men in the NT era (Col. 2:9).”

  21. Kelly (NEO) says:

From the NET Bible study notes “The Greek word translated [dwelt] (σκηνόω, skēnoō) alludes to the OT tabernacle, where the Shekinah, the visible glory of God’s presence, resided. The author is suggesting that this glory can now be seen in Jesus .
. . The verb used here may imply that the Shekinah glory that once was found in the tabernacle has taken up residence in the person of Jesus. Cf. also John 2:19–21. The Word became flesh. This verse constitutes the most concise statement of the incarnation in the New Testament. John 1:1 makes it clear that the Logos was fully God, but 1:14 makes it clear that he was also fully human. . . . Here for the first time the Logos of 1:1 is identified as Jesus of Nazareth—the two are one and the same. Thus this is the last time the word logos is used in the Fourth Gospel to refer to the second person of the Trinity. From here on it is Jesus of Nazareth who is the focus of John’s Gospel.”

  22. Tami Cutler says:

I’m reading a book by Henry Nouwen called “Discernment”. I had to share this: The presence of God is often subtle, small, quiet, and hidden. “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom” (Isa. 11:1-2 NAB). Our salvation comes from something small, tender, and vulnerable, something hardly noticeable. The Lord, who is the creator of the universe, comes to us in smallness, weakness, and hiddenness. When I have no eyes for the small signs of God’s presence – the smile of a baby, the carefree play of children, the words of encouragement and gestures of love offered by friends – I remain spiritually blind. The promise of divine presence is hidden in the shoot that sprouts from the stump.

    1. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Great thoughts. Thanks for sharing

I was at my grief counselor recently. She told me I had good discernment, but the enemy can take that and turn it into judgement and being critical. I thought that was very thought provoking.

GM ladies. I’m excited to be off for the next 2 weeks! Thank you for your prayers yesterday! I am feeling a bit lighter today:) I love the song, Mary did you know? Here are some of the lyrics:
    Mary, did you know
    That your baby boy
Will give sight to the blind man?
    Mary, did you know
    That your baby boy
Would calm a storm with His hand?
    Did you know
    That your baby boy
    Has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God?
    Mary, did you know?
    Oo, Mary, did you know?
    Have a blessed day ladies.

    NKJV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
    .
‘Beheld’ feels more impactful than ‘observed’ to me. That what they saw in their time with Jesus, His glory, was so much more, up close and personal, not to be forgotten, than just observing.
    .
‘Full of grace and truth’ is what got me this morning. Just the word grace brought teary eyes and was so comforting.
    .
Praying for wisdom in prioritizing the truly important items these last few days, and for peaceful interactions in my family and in all of yours.
    .

The Word became flesh.-human, and dwell among us…
    .
The Word-Jesus, became flesh,He became like you and me(without the sin) and dwelt- settled, stayed, remained, resided, inhabited, lived among us…
    Take your pick!
It comes down to the same thing, right?
    .
He stayed with and within us!
    .
And in staying with us, we get to observe His glory, daily.
I know I have, every day, in my surroundings, be it in the people or the beauty around, whether I’m having a good day or not, that does not change who He is or why He dwells within me.
    .
He is close, My JESUS (Sorry Mari V), my comfort, my tower of refuge and my strength, my peace and my hope, and I know that His glory will shine in this Advent season and beyond, because He is full of grace, truth, love and hope everlasting,!
    ,
