Growing up I heard this verse in form of a song during what I “think“ was communion time in the Catholic Church. I was young. I still remember the beautiful voice singing it. Interestingly I can still hear her voice. Whenever I see this verse I can sing it. Back then I didn’t know that it was Matthew 5:16. I pray that in one way shape or form that I’m letting the light of Jesus shine. It’s not me! Not me at all. It’s all Jesus! I miss the kids at school! I miss the little kindergartners and their smiling faces. Whenever one of them needed that extra TLC, I would pray silently that it would be Jesus‘s arms who are comforting the child. I miss them so much!

I am noticing that the scripture says “let” and not “make” your light shine. So often I feel like I am at risk for missing Gods call for my life . But the Holy Spirit, my light, is impossible to not shine and guide me forward in life if I abide in the word and “let” Him through!

Our local churches contacted one another and have designated today as a day of prayer for our small community. We have had two deaths and 14 hospitalizations, 7 in the ICU, from Covid-19 in the past week. We have one hospital in our county. Each participating church was to select a two hour time period during which their congregation would pray. Our church will be praying from 9-11am. Each family, each person on their knees will be a light penetrating the darkness. This good work may not be visible to many at all but the Father sees. How powerful for family members to join together to pray, for children to see their parents’ heads bowed, for the simple prayer of a child to be spoken, for a teenager to read the Bible instead of their phone. Lights, every one. That single person or that elderly one, alone in their home, crying out to God on behalf of their family, friends, neighbors. More light. All across the community, a beacon of hope. We may be under a “stay at home” order but prayer doesn’t stay. It goes forth. No boundary. From our lips to the Father’s ears. This is the family of God. May these lights be as a raging fire.

I just read this out loud to my husband. Thank you, Churchmouse. I think it’s so easy to focus on how we get through (Should I get groceries today? What kind of schedule do I need to create for my kids?) and forget that God is calling us to utter reliance and dependence on Him. He is our only hope. He is bigger than Covid-19. Jesus put sin and sickness and shame to death on the tree, and this is our call to prayer. Easter is just a week away, but it’s so easy to forget… I’ll be praying with you today.
