God Is Immutable

Numbers 23:19, Psalm 102:25-28, Job 23:8-14, Malachi 3:1-6, Hebrews 6:13-19, James 1:16-18, Hebrews 13:8

Scripture Reading: Numbers 23:19, Psalm 102:25-28, Job 23:8-14, Malachi 3:1-6, Hebrews 6:13-19, James 1:16-18, Hebrews 13:8

As humans, we speak the language of change. Whether we seek it with ferocity or grimace at the thought of it, change is inevitable. The calendar shifts, the sun rises and sets, our numbered hairs grow gray, and our hearts endure the only constant we know—change.

The book of Ecclesiastes contains a famous refrain charged with the impatience, discomfort, and hopefulness of our ever-changing lives: “There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot” (Ecclesiastes 3:1–2).

With the way of life on earth being that of change, it’s natural to assume the Creator of it all would be the same—that He would change as much as the seasons that He Himself spins. And yet Scripture calls us to cling to God because He is the only One who never changes. God is unchanging in His being, His character and will are constant, all because He is perfect. Nothing can be added to or taken away from Him.

Job, whose life changed in dramatic and painful ways, knew God to always be true to His character. “He is unchangeable; who can oppose him?” Job asked (Job 23:13). Job staked his hope—his life—on his belief that God will always be who He declares Himself to be.

Everything He does is consistent with who He is. God’s characteristics are not altered by time passing or new experiences; He has been, is, and always will be the full expression of each of His attributes. God’s promises are the same, and His ability to keep them will never waver. In Malachi 3, God told His people: “I, the LORD, have not changed…” (Malachi 3:6). God’s immutability means we can count on Him, no matter what.

There is so much about everyday life that changes. I feel sometimes that I cannot keep up with everything. It is comforting to know that God, the one who created me, is all knowing and unchanging. He is the same as He has always been and He will continue to be that constant light in the darkness. To feel His presence is fills me with the peace that I need daily. Even if I only feel Him for a moment in a situation, it’s His reminder that He will never leave me and is there always.

  17. Jessica Thomas says:

I’m in a period of change. My littlest one heads into school and it’s time to return to the world of work. I have prayed and prayed for the job God has planned for me to help me be a mum and make use of my skills. Today I had an email to arrange a meeting about a job. I continue to pray about it but am aware God may also be refining me. Whatever the outcome in this chapter of change, God has a plan for me! Amen

  18. Alayna P. says:

Sometimes, I feel like everything around me is shifting. People change. Circumstances flip overnight. My emotions swing between hope and weariness more than I care to admit. But in the middle of all of it there’s God. Steady. Constant. Not like the world. Not like me.

Even when I can’t see Him in the moment (Job gets that), He’s there, working with purpose, carrying me through every test, holding tight to promises He hasn’t forgotten. And I need that reminder, especially on days when I feel like I’m wandering, unsure if I’m making any progress at all.

God’s unchanging nature means I’m not building my faith on something flimsy. His character is stable ground. If He said He loves me, He still does. If He called me His, He hasn’t taken it back. Even when I wobble or doubt or drift, He remains… exactly who He’s always been ❤️

And maybe most tenderly, His immutability means His mercy and grace aren’t going anywhere either. They don’t run out or evolve or expire. They’re fresh every morning, as sure as sunrise.

Change is so everywhere, even when you think nothing has changed, a whole heap of stuff has changed! My gardener this morning can’t make it, that has changed the plans I had. I have a lot of clothes and shoes to put on “vinted” as my body and feet have embraced the change and rhythm of life. In 3 months time life, as I have known it for the last 18 years, changes, never to be the same. . Changes. . I can safely say, I do my bible studies in the morning, on waking up, true, BUT, it’s not always at the same time, ergo, it changes.. . BUT GOD.. . I love that there is a constant, GOD, in my life, that is not of this world, that continues, since the beginning of time, to be the same, yesterday, today, tomorrow! That, though the world spins, and life may not look the same in a minutes time, GOD, never, ever changes. He is unshakeable, not like us, a hint of something different, and we shake, we quake! . BUT GOD.. . He changes, never, NEVER! . Change is good in many ways, and we embrace it at every given opportunity, but, we still need the goto love of God each day, the unvarying grace, the permanent mercy and unchangeable faithfulness of God each day, we need Him, and the security of His lasting, abiding, enduring, persistent, constant presence and promises in our lives.. . He never, NEVER changes! . AMEN.. . Happy Tuesday, beautiful people.. Covered in love, hugs and continued prayers.. ❤❤❤

Thank you to all who prayed about my vacation yesterday. We moved this morning into a suite at the hotel where we’ve been for the past two nights. We were able to salvage all the food we brought with us and can now cook our meals. We’ll be here until Saturday, when we start home. I’m sitting under an umbrella on the beach, enjoying the sound of the waves and thanking God for His creation and answered prayers. I look forward to relaxing the rest of the week.

    1. Cee Gee says:

So glad to hear that, Teresa; thanks for the update! ❤ Here in the upstate we have rain in the forecast for the rest of the week, but it doesn’t look like a problem on the coast. ☺

      1. Teresa Donley says:

It doesn’t look like it will be much here. Even if it pours all day, I’ll get to watch God’s beautiful ocean.

  31. Gwineth52 says:

All praise to the Immutable One.
    Who clearly does not change.
    But can clearly change me.
To cease conforming to the ways of this ever changing world.
To “seize the hope set” before me…an “anchor for the soul, firm & secure”. (Hebrew 6:18-19).
I pray to the Perfect One who sees & saves the imperfect me.
“Jesus Christ, Solid Rock on which I stand.
    All else is sinking sand.”

  33. Shar says:

Hebrews 6:19 “we have this hope as an anchor” really stood out to me. The old hymn that I hadn’t thought of for years came to mind.

“We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”

Praying for those in my life that are without this anchor. So thankful that God is God, unchangeable and a keeper of His promises.

Faithful, in the waiting you are… always faithful
    In the valley you are
Faithful, in the midst of hurt and pain…you are faithful

    [Chorus]
Your promises remain forever and ever
You won’t fade away, you never, you never
    Change, you’re unchanging God
You will never change, you’re unchanging God
    Verse 2]
Mighty in the battle you are…always with me
    You’re the God who overcomes
Mighty, you will raise me from the grave…you are mighty

    [Bridge]
Oceans will rise, kingdoms will fall
But the word of the Lord stands forever
The sun will start to fade, the world will pass away
But the word of the Lord stands forever
Death will try to come but perfect love has won
Cause the word of the Lord stands forever

    Your love will last forever
All glory, all honor, unto our God forever

During Lent, I listened to 3 songs daily that were brought up by you and other SHEs. What a beautiful way to feel the love of God! I am grateful for you all.

      1. Tara B says:

What were the 3 songs??? You have me curious now ☺️

        1. kellyciara says:

I have a giant list because many SHEs reference songs in their comments. I pick 3 from this list every day. Cece Winans’ That’s My King, Alan Jackson’s Standing on the Promises of God and How Great Thou Art by Carrie Underwood have been especially meaningful to me.

  36. Cheryl Blow says:

What I love about this study with all of you is how these scriptures speak the same truth to all of us. But.. different verses stand out to us! Each insight is beautiful!

To me today, I’m thankful God is unchanging! What comes to mind is the ups and downs of the stock market as an illustration of how much our world changes but God is the best investment we could ever make! And investing in His kingdom is the best place to put our “talents.”

I hope this makes sense! I don’t even follow the stock market!

Praying for all of you! Chin up sisters, Jesus Christ IS the same yesterday and today and tomorrow!

    NUMBERS 23:19
God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill?
I find myself in silent Saturday these days, waiting for the promises of God to come to fruition in certain situations, while at the same time wondering if I heard the promise correctly or doubting that God will do what He said He would do. It is verses like this that keep me keeping on. My brother BJ is still hanging on, he is a fighter for sure. It is horrible to watch his weekly decline and the constant thought that this could be the last time I see him. BUT God sustains me and it helps me to remember that He does not change. That his promises to me are true and unchanging.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Thankful you have those promises to hold on to, Tami! We are praying for BJ and your family. Love you! ❤

  39. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

“He is the only One who never changes.”

I think of all the changes in my life, not only over the years but from day to day.
One day I’m happy, one day i’m sad. One day I’m depressed – the next I’m on cloud nine. I get angry, impatient, judgmental and the list goes on. Our lives are all about change. But praise the Living God – He is the same yesterday, today, and FOREVER!!!

I never really noticed the end of the verse in Hebrews 6:19 where it says, …an anchor for the soul….(this is the part that stood out to me -) It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus entered..”

One anchor (of hope) goes right into the
He holy of holies and latches on to Jesus! How cool is that!

I praise God that He never changes, that He is steadfast and immovable!

Thank You God that You are who You are!

    Happy Tuesday She’s!❤

The moments, hours, days, weeks we live in can change in the blink of an eye. All that we know to be routine and usual, our everyday rhythms and norms can at times just slowly change or other times be quickly snatched away in mere moments. I have experienced this, but, have also known that our steadfast, faithful God does not change. He is constant. What a great comfort and peace that we can cling tightly to Him, depend on Him and hope in Him. And, to know this, we have to know Him. To sit at His feet, abide in His presence, be in the Word, have an active, intentional relationship with Jesus. He has made a way for us to know Him and to hold to the Truth that “He is the same yesterday, today, forever”….thanks be to God❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Well said, Wendy! ❤

  47. Rhonda J. says:

In an ever changing world, and life- We have an Unchanging God! That is something to delight in! That is something to grab hold of and never forget. As we are older and have the ability to look back over our lives through the ups and downs, joys and sorrows we can see that God was always there. How do we know- we read the scripture from beginning to the end, but the old testament is something to behold! Read and study, meditate it and let God show you his never changing ways through the history of his people!
Are you writing down how God has stayed steady, the anchor in your life, your story? If not, start your “diary.” Keep account. Then share it, parts, or all..

One thing my dad drilled into me over the years was to keep my word, and would remind me that my word is my bond – defined as someone who always keeps their promises. I do work hard to keep my promises but sometimes things get in the way that I didn’t see coming, resulting in apologies and scrambling to salvage a situation.
But for our God, this NEVER happens! He always keeps His promises, and nothing EVER catches Him by surprise. This is our God, hallelujah!

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8

    Jesus,
Life is constantly shifting—people change, plans fall through, emotions rise and fall—but You? You never change.

You are the same yesterday, today, and forever, and honestly, that gives me so much peace.

I’ve trusted things before that didn’t hold up. I’ve leaned on people and promises that didn’t last.
But You are steady. You are faithful. You mean what You say, and You follow through. Always.

When I’m overwhelmed by change, remind me that You’re still on the throne.

When I’m unsure of what’s next, remind me that You’ve never once been caught off guard.
You’re my anchor when everything else feels like it’s drifting.

Thank You for being solid, dependable, and full of mercy—even when I’m not.

Help me trust You more deeply because of who You are, not just what You do.

I don’t need to know everything about tomorrow—just that You’ll still be You when I get there.

    Amen.
