God Most High

Open Your Bible

Genesis 14:17-20, Psalm 91:1-16, Psalm 92:1-2, Luke 8:26-33

In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.

GOD MOST HIGH: God’s superiority over all other gods and idols

El Elyon, “God Most High,” is a frequently used name for God in the Old Testament. The name Elohim was paired with adjectives that described the God of Israel. This name emphasizes that God is greater than all others.

The name God Most High elevates the God of Israel over all other gods and highlights that He is superior to all other objects of worship.

God Most High. Higher than all the gods of this world. May we glorify and Praise Your Holy Name. May You be lifted up and exalted.
Help me in everything I do be a representation of You.
May my mouth worship You all the days of my life

I chose Psalm 91:9 because it reminds me that when I make the Most High my dwelling place, I can rest in His protection and peace. It helps me remember that God is above everything I face, and I’m safest when I stay close to Him ❤️

Psalm 91 gave me peace over my pregnancy over 30 years ago. I had been possibly exposed to Fifth’s Disease while subbing at school and I lived in that Psalm. ❤

Such comfort and peace the Word gives.
Thank you all for your prayers, please continue! I spoke with one of my very best friends who is a nurse, she had looked over my labs. It was a very encouraging conversation! She said she would describe the things that showed up positive and high – as elevated, not high. And nothing was marked CH – critically high. She said she did not see anything alarming. Between hearing that, and all your prayers, my mind is at ease and I have peace! So thank you, thank you!! I will send the lab results on to my oncologist that I was seeing when I had breast cancer back in 2017, just to get a second opinion. Trusting God for His will.

Happy 4th of July, hope you get to enjoy it with family. God bless the USA!!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I don’t remember you having breast cancer Sharon!! Did you share with us here? I really am forgetful though. :/

I liked the way you broke down Psalm 91!

      1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I’m not sure if I shared it or not, it was small – stage 1. I had a lumpectomy and passed my 5 year mark in 2022.

        1. Rhonda J. says:

Still a scare! Praise God it was taken care of quickly!

    2. AZ Walker says:

So happy to read your post and what a blessing to have your dear nurse friend help you understand the big picture. ❤️

    3. Cee Gee says:

Sharon, I pray for your oncologist – for insight and wisdom as he/she studies your labs. May that assessment bring even more peace! ❤

    4. Sandi says:

I’m glad your nurse friend was able to reassure you. God is good. My best friend who is a nurse diagnosed my low blood sugar years ago. It explained alot, and I learned to control it. I will keep you in prayer.

    5. Indiana Elaine says:

Glad your nurse friend was able to give you some reassuring news. Thanks for your break down of psalm 91. My now decreased brother used to have cards with psalms 91 printed on it. It was his favorite psalm and he would pass it out to unbelievers that he met. I read it many times after his passing and why God took him at a young age.

    6. Tami says:

I’m so happy for you Sharon. And this is a confirmation for me too bc I just got blood results back with some “elevated” things and my friend who is a nurse said the same.

    7. Traci Gendron says:

Such good news to hear today!

    8. Wendy B says:

Amen to your Psalm 91 reflections. The reassurance from your from your friend is a blessing. May God’s peace continue, His wisdom guide you.

    9. Rachel says:

That sounds so encouraging! Will continue to pray!

  11. Ashley M. says:

To call God El Elyon is to recognize that no one and nothing is higher than Him. He is not just another god among many—He is the Most High, the One who reigns above every earthly power and spiritual realm. In a world where people place trust in status, success, or even themselves, the name El Elyon lifts our eyes above it all. It reminds us that:
God sees the whole picture and rules over every detail.

We can trust Him with our struggles, because He is not limited by what limits us.

Our identity and hope rest in the One who is above all things.

When life feels chaotic or out of control, calling on El Elyon anchors our hearts. It reminds us that our God isn’t just involved—He is in charge. Whether facing uncertainty, grief, or joy, we can worship Him as the God Most High who holds it all in His hands.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Well said, Ashley! ❤

    4. Wendy B says:

      Amen. Appreciate your thoughts ❤️

  12. Cheryl Blow says:

As always, your insights are a blessing! Prayer lists appreciated and prayers over all. The definition of God being superior over all gods and idols made me pause (not in a negative way) because I know in my heart there is no other God but The Most High God. There might be fallen angels but Jesus had already defeated them! I’m reminded of the verse of the day from You version .

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
    ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬
    https://bible.com/bible/111/2co.3.17.NIV

We walk in freedom today no matter where we live or what our life looks like! I celebrate freedom from sin, death, hell and the grave!

God is good! Have a wonderful day!

  13. Robin Bailey says:

    Fred Hammond -Psalm 91
    Give it a listen!

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty
Whatever storms arise won’t move me
Because my eyes are stayed on Him, He is my King
Don’t you know, don’t you know, hey
He delivers me from the hand of the enemy
And every plague that shall arise, yeah
Under His wings I can seek safety
For His faithfulness is a shield for my life
Oh what peace it is to know
That He is wherever I go, wherever I go
There is nothing that He can’t see
And in Him I have victory
I can dwell (dwell), I can dwell (dwell)
In my Savior there is safety
And there is no other place
    In Him I dwell
Whether I move to the mountain or the valley
Abiding in You is the safest place only
I’ve found in You a mighty strong tower
And that’s the place where I choose to dwell
I call on Him and He answers me
And delivers me on the double, yeah
He sets His love on me and He hears me constantly
And saves me from each and every trouble
I live I move and I have my being As long as I stay in Him
    As long as I stay
    Shelter

Great song! I have never heard it before!

  14. Sarah Carmona says:

I’m not going to lie…today’s reading wasn’t comforting to me. It was painful. Like many, I prayed Psalm 91 over my family during 2020. I prayed it over my family daily. Then we ended up losing my husband’s grandfather due to COVID and it just hurts. The Almighty God was capable and able to heal him on Earth side, and trust there was no one more deserving. Anyway, I cried through a lot of today’s reading and that’s okay. There’s still a lot of hurt and pain there and that’s okay too.

    1. Sandi says:

This is how I felt when my mom was in the end stages of alzheimers. The comfort was knowing she was saved

    2. Cheryl Blow says:

I’m so sorry Sarah! Praying God’s comfort over you and your family.

    3. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

So sorry for your loss Sarah. Praying that God will ease the pain and hurt that you are still suffering with. Continue to lean into Him. ❤️
I prayed that God would heal my mom,or at least give her 15 more years like he did for Hezekiah. But He chose to heal her His way – by taking her home. His ways are not ours, nor our thoughts His. I have to daily remind myself, and that gives peace.

      1. Traci Gendron says:

Dear Sharon I’m brought to such emotions reading He chose to heal her His way – by taking her home. I felt this about Tanner, but reading it just it me. Thank you it brings such peace.

      2. Rhonda J. says:

That is a beautiful way how you stated that!
I pray for healing for my back, but I know I already have healing in his time!

    4. AZ Walker says:

So sorry for the painful loss of your husband’s grandfather, Sarah. I prayed Psalm 91 during Covid too and it brought back memories for me needing His comfort and protection during that uncertain time. I also found SRT in March 2020 and fasted the news and social media for a bit and just came here which was such a blessing.

      1. Sandi says:

I’ve been fasting the news too. Replaced it with this

      2. Rhonda J. says:

I love that! And here you are!

    5. Cee Gee says:

Sarah (I thought I replied this morning, but don’t see it.)
I have had similar thoughts in my losses; I am so sorry for yours!
      .
Your comment reminds me that we should prayerfully consider any verses we share for encouragement to others. Verses that give us peace may have a painful memory attached for someone else. Great reminder! ❤

  15. Rachel says:

Thank you so much for your prayers yesterday!. It was indeed a beautiful and hard day and the graveside solemnity and honors wrecked me. But we got to celebrate the legacy of a life well-lived…and it was only 82 degrees! In TX! In July! This was no small mercy!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

(Heart)! Thank you Jesus, for being with Rachael and her family. Giving a beautiful celebration of her FIL’s life and legacy! And praying many were pointed to You, Lord, Most High!!

  16. Jamie Trice says:

I had never heard of the name Elyon before reading the books by Ted Dekker, The Circle. There are 4 of them in total. They are Christian Fiction, but are beautiful at giving a picture of our loving God. At least to me.

    1. Cheryl Blow says:

      ❤️

    2. Cee Gee says:

      Thanks for that mention! ❤

  17. Wendy B says:

God Most High, El Elyon – above all else. What a comfort and peace this is. I have previously shared that Psalm 91 is a precious Psalm to me. In the darkest night of the soul and my health crisis I would read or play it on audio, over and over hundreds of times. It was pleading for God’s presence to be near, to silence the taunts of the enemy and to claim hope and healing from God Almighty as I was clinging to life. There is just none like Him and He reigns above it all.
Thank you Lord that you are above all else. That at the very same time that you are mighty and Sovereign over all, you gently provide shelter and refuge under the shadow of your wing. We declare your might and power, we rest in your peace and presence Lord, and we worship you. ✝️

The words of Chris Tomlin’s, Holy Forever come to mind as voices join in all praise lifted high to our Mighty God.

Praying for all the needs shared and wishing our US sisters a Happy July 4❤️

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

      1. Tami says:

Are you going to the concert at Central Park? I may be going too!

  18. Sandi says:

Ps 91;1…he that dwellers in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Such a great promise to us.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      It is! ❤

  19. Rhonda J. says:

Once again, I am seeing the Lord, Most High, King of all, Creator—loves us and wants to protect his children. They were set apart to be his special ones. That all others would look and see something important and visually and fundamentally different. I mean, he created all humans, and allowed them to reproduce rapidly–but yet he took Abraham and said I am doing something different with you, and YOU will be the father of many. And you will be mine and I will be your God. But He required obedience. And sacrifice.
And so it went centuries after centuries- the stiff-necked Israelites–tried to obey, yet their flesh and selfishness, the devil, let them astray. It could never be done. Only through Jesus, was it fulfilled and the veil was torn. Now we, that were not the chosen people could be the Most High’s children as well. Grafted in through His Son. But Jesus- points to His Father. The One who is still the Most High. He himself with all the NAMES we are learning and reminded of because they matter. We are still to be set apart- as Christ followers with a desire to obey him and his ways, and know that he will care for us and protect, shield us, surrounds us with his angels. (love that- “they will protect us with their hands!” Can you imagine?!)

My heart just wants to yell- God–MOST HIGH– IS EVERYTHING!! Like, we as Christians, this should be revealed in our actions and the way we speak, and the things we covet, and our desires, and the way we raise our families. Our values, what we stand for in our cities and schools. All things for and to him, not the culture standards. We will be known by what we care about. Yet….we are split and argue as Christians. I believe if we are in the word and meditate on it daily, year by year, we will know the Most High. Our heart will hurt for what his heart hurts for. Humble our hearts and turn from our wicked ways. Humble our hearts to not let pride block us from the Most High.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Amen, Rhonda! I was amazed and encouraged by all the signs on the interstate (mostly in Illinois) that referenced God. We drove through parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, NC, Georgia, and back to SC. Pretty sure I read ‘God signs’ in every state. Think of the # of people passing and reading those signs each day!!!! I will post a picture of my favorite on the FB page. ❤

  21. Kimberly says:

Today, I’ve been reminded of who God is as El Elyon—God Most High.

This name pulls me out of my small perspective and lifts my eyes to see the God who:

    Rules over everything (Genesis 14:17–20)
Protects me from all harm (Psalm 91)
Deserves my worship and gratitude (Psalm 92)
Has authority over all darkness (Luke 8:26–33)

I realize I often limit God to my current worries. I forget that He is above my situation, and not just beside me. But “Most High” means He sees everything clearly—and nothing surprises Him.

Today I want to rest in that.
    To let go of control.
    To worship more freely.
To walk with confidence, knowing I belong to the One who reigns.

God Most High is not distant—He is my refuge, my protector, and my Father.

    1. Wendy B says:

      Amen❤️

      1. Sandi says:

I needed your perspective today. Thank you

Psalm 91:1 – He who dwells in the shelter of el Elyon, the Most High, the God greater than all others, will rest in the shadow of el Shaddai, the Lord Almighty, our all powerful Father. ( a 2 for one today:)
Psalm 91, like Tina, has a special place in my heart. For years my daughter has been seeing the numbers 9:11 (on the clock). I decided to look up Psalm 9:11 and 91:1 and pray them over her. I did not know at the time that Psalm 91 was the Psalm of protection. When things were really bad in her first year of college, the Lord led me to study Psalm 91 and to continue to pray that over her. Just when things are at their darkest, the Lord will show me that it’s 9:11 which I believe is a reminder to me that He has her. Just this morning, I have been up since early morning with a racing mind, fear of future, what ifs for her, projecting worst case scenarios, and here again in today’s study – Psalm 91. Thank you Lord!

    1. Sandi says:

Wow,interesting @psalm 91. My mind has been racing to,about a situation that I know God has control of. Giving it all to Him today

    2. Wendy B says:

    Reminded of Exodus 20:1-5a
And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

Song coming to mind this morning, You Are Holy (Prince of Peace), Michael W. Smith. He has a lyric version that demonstrates better than I can explain for those who aren’t familiar with it – where everyone sings part of it in unison, and then the guys sing a section with the girls singing on top of them. My favorite part (the girls, of course):
    Girls:
    He is Lord of Lords
    He is King of Kings
    He is mighty God
    Lord of everything
    He’s Emmanuel
    He’s the great “I AM”
    He’s my Prince of Peace
    Who is the Lamb
    He’s the living God
    He’s my saving grace
    He will reign forever
    He is Ancient of Days
He’s the Alpha, Omega, Beginning and End
He’s my Savior, Messiah, Redeemer, and friend
    .
    All:
    You’re my Prince of peace
And I will live my life for You
And I will live my life for You

  26. Tina says:

Psalm 91 has long since been my favorite go to for protection and for loved ones travelling and the likes.
I often, when I’m driving, will look for a bird of prey, flying high and so free..I see the expanse of the wings and my heart soars at the vastness and I can almost imagine and feel what it is like to have the ‘safe space’ under God Most Highs ‘wings’!
    .
The verses given from Psalm 92 however, have my heart and attention today! In this moment..
    .
It is good to praise the LORD
And make music to your name, O Most High,
To proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night,
To the music of the ten stringed lyre and the melody of a harp..
    .
This Psalm goes on to mention how great God’s works are and profound His thoughts that us meres do not understand..
‘..BUT YOU O LORD,are exalted forever!
Always and forever in my book.. Always.!
    .
O Most High God, as life throws us lemons, i pray YOU will be even closer, wrapping us in the safety of your wings and helping us to ‘still bear fruit that will stay fresh and green, so when the time is right, in your timing, the lemons will be made into lemonade and we can proclaim
    .
The LORD is upright; He is our Rock..’
He is indeed, the Most High God, and in Him, I put my trust.
(Some words stolen from both Psalm 91 and 92).
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    Right..
    .
We made it to Friday, by His grace, thankful for the surrounding of the Lord of Armies, the presence of the Spirit, the Word of the Living God, that grounds me, the promise of God Almighty who will, and does make all things new..
Most High, has my heart.. because there is nothing, NOTHING above Him and I am blessed to call Him my Father God..
    .
    Amen.
    .
Happy Friday Beloved.. praying the beautiful Psalm 91 over you and hopefilled your day will be perfect in His love, grace and hope..
    Blessings.

It’s so wonderful that our God is above ALL, and that we can dwell in His shelter. Who have we to fear when we trust in a Most High God that invites us into a relationship with Him (we can dwell under the shadow of His wings!)? Dear Father, I pray that those that read the passages this morning may be blessed by your word and live in the light of its truth today. And Father, i thank you that Jesus is your Son (son of the Most High!) and that He came down to earth and was raised again so that all who believe in Him may have eternal life with you. May we be amazed at these truths!
