God Is Omnipresent

1 Kings 8:22-29, Psalm 139:7-12, Jeremiah 23:23-24, Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 17:24-28

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 8:22-29, Psalm 139:7-12, Jeremiah 23:23-24, Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 17:24-28

The Bible can be described as the story of God’s presence with His people. From the garden with Adam and Eve to the incarnation to the gift of His Spirit at Pentecost, God has always stayed close to His people. At the same time, His presence is not limited to any one location or situation. God is present everywhere in His creation, above and beyond it, existing in both the visible and invisible all at once.

Using a series of rhetorical questions, God outlined the all-encompassing nature of His omnipresence through the prophet Jeremiah.

“Am I a God who is only near…and not a God who is far away? Can a person hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?”
—Jeremiah 23:23–24

While God’s presence fills the heavens and the earth, at the same time, He is always with us. There is no escaping His presence. When we understand God’s heart toward His people, we can find this comforting, echoing the words of the psalmist: “But as for me, God’s presence is my good” (Psalm 73:28).

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus promised His disciples He would send the Holy Spirit to them. His last words in the Gospel of Matthew were, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). We experience Jesus’s constant presence through His Spirit, who lives in all believers. And one day, when Jesus returns, we will see Him not just with eyes of faith, but “face to face” (1Corinthians 13:12).

God’s omnipresence means He is with us, and His presence extends into eternity as He has promised to never leave us. As His presence dwells in us, we can learn what it looks like to go through our day with God, abiding in Him moment by moment.

I think it’s incredibly important that we remember that God’s presence doesn’t flee from us when we slip up and sin. No. Instead, He presses in closer, drawing us nearer to Himself because it is only in the light of His presence that sin loses its luster. And it does so because we how much more beautiful and radiant and alluring He is than any sin could ever be.

    1. Kristy says:

      So thankful for this truth!

  16. Alayna P. says:

Today I’m sitting with the truth that God is everywhere. Not in a vague, distant way, but deeply present, fully attentive, impossibly near. As I read through these verses, I feel both comforted and undone. In 1 Kings 8:27–29, Solomon asks, “Will God indeed live on earth?” even while acknowledging that not even the highest heaven can contain Him. And yet, he pleads with God to hear from heaven and see what’s happening here. That mix of reverence and boldness? That’s what I want to carry too. Psalm 139 reminds me there is no “away” from God. No hiding in darkness. No running so far I leave His reach. Wherever I go, there He is, already holding me. Even the places I think are too messy, too human, too heavy. He’s already there. Already at work.
Jeremiah’s words echo this gently but firmly: “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” I can’t box Him in. He’s not limited by space or time, or my feelings of closeness or distance.
And then there’s Jesus’ parting promise in Matthew 28: “I am with you always.” Always. Not sometimes. Not when I’m doing great spiritually. Not when I’ve cleaned myself up. Always. Paul in Acts takes it even further. “In Him we live and move and have our being.” It’s not just that God is with us, it’s that we literally exist inside the expanse of His presence. So what do I do with that today? I think I rest. I let myself stop striving to feel close to God and remember that I already am. I breathe deeply and remember He’s already here, already listening, already moving. ❤️

  18. Mercy says:

This reminds me of the song we sang at church, “The presence of the Lord is here, the presence of the Lord is here, I feel it in the atmosphere…”. This song really cheers me up and puts my mind into the mode of awareness that God is around, His eyes are to and fro upon the earth. But then, how come it is so easy to forget that God is watching, that God is present always? The earth is His, shouldn’t He keep watch over His possession? The people of all nations are His, shouldn’t He keep watch over everyone, including vulnerable little children who might be trafficked and other kinds of stealing? But the wicked ones don’t know that. Why? Utter foolishness. A foolish one says in His heart there is no God. They think they can get away with evil doing, behind closed doors. This reminds me of a song lyrics of miss Tay Swift called False God (They tell us who they are y’all- be warned. I was very shocked when I recognized the hidden message to lead the young generation astray, calling faith blind, encouraging worshipping a false kind of love, hinting drunkenness and lustfulness). There is no behind closed doors with God. He sees through the heart and secret intentions. OH Lord, I pray the fear of the Lord and the awareness of God’s presence be with all those who don’t know You. That they suddenly startle and be awakened to the fact that God is looking over their shoulder and looking into their very heart. May the fear and the awareness of Your presence keep us your children and also the lost nations of the world from doing evil. May the nations return to You while there is time. Let minds be renewed, hearts be circumcised. Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts, let him return to the LORD, so He may have compassion on him. Thank you Father!

A long time ago, when my girls were little, I was in a women’s Bible study. We did an exercise around our homes, cars, or wherever we were to practice the presence of God. I’m going to work on this practice! God is there anyway but I need to be more aware of this truth in my life!

Loved all of your insights! Praying for all! Thank you for praying for baby Levi. He is improving! Please pray for my friend Tammy who has cancer. She is in the hospital and very ill. Love all the SHE’s!

  24. Susan Burley says:

“Abiding in Him moment by moment” I love that phrasing! When my Dad was diagnosed with cancer, he told us to take things one day at a time. I’ve carried that sentiment with me throughout life after his passing, but sometimes we just have to sit with God moment by moment!

ALSO/Update: thank you all for praying yesterday. I didn’t want to say much as it was regarding our school. There was a non-credible school shooting threat. And after much investigation, that’s exactly what it was, non-Credible. Too much detailed involved I’m just thankful that I work at an amazing school where our safety is first for all of us!

  28. Gina says:

I love how God knows the words that we need when we need them.
We’re getting ready for a move, and just across town. Although I’m excited about it, I’m sad because I won’t have a garden anymore. That’s my secret place where God meets me, and moments spent out there with Him are so beautiful. I’ve been sad about that.
So the reminders that God is omnipresent, and won’t just meet me in the garden was a much-needed reminder today:-)

    1. Margaret W. says:

Perhaps you could make an indoor garden with plants or find a nearby park? God is willing to meet us anywhere; praying that you find your special place to meet him in your new home.

      1. Gwineth52 says:

        Agreed!
Hoping, wishing, praying Margaret W finds or creates her next secret spiritual garden!

    2. Cee Gee says:

I understand that so well, Gina! I ‘lost’ much of my treasured garden last year due to a huge septic job and don’t have the stamina to rebuild from scratch. I still grieve that loss, but thankful to have some ground to work with as I am able. I am so sorry you don’t have that option! If you have even a tiny outdoor space, maybe a small water feature would be soothing. ❤ Hugs, fellow garden lover!

  29. Christie Petersen says:

“God has always stayed close to his people.” All my life you have been faithful, all my life you have been so, so good. With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God, I will sing of the goodness of God!”

    1. Gwineth52 says:

      Yes, Christie!
I can hear CeCe Winans singing the Goodness of God right now!!

  30. Kristy says:

All my life you have been faithful, all my life you have been so so good!
Thank you Jesus that you have always been close and that you will always BE close. There is no God like you. You have kept what you promised. Even THERE your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me. You fill the heavens and the earth. You came near, you stay near. You are with us always, until the end of the age. Thank you that you are not far from each of us, we can reach out and find you. Your presence is indeed my good! Right there beside me in the highs and in the lows. Reaching out and comforting, guiding, leading, loving. I thank you Jesus for your perfect ways, that you are God, that you are unchanging, and that you are everywhere at all times!

  31. Cee Gee says:

KNOWing that our God is EVER PRESENT with us is so comforting. When my kids were little they loved hiding from me…a game to see how long it took me to find them. I can’t play that game with God! Thankful for that truth! ❤

Reminded of this beautiful worship song today:
Francesca Battistelli – Holy Spirit (Official Music Video)
    Partial lyrics:
    There is nothing worth more
    That will ever come close
No thing can compare You’re our living hope
    Your presence Lord
I’ve tasted and seen Of the sweetest of love
When my heart becomes free And my shame is undone
    Your presence Lord

Holy spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

Thankful for HIS Omnipresence as I can reach out to HIM anytime, anywhere at any given moment. And when the thought of being alone starts to creep in, I rejected it because I know my Jesus is with me and you at all times. All we have to do is call upon HIS name and HE comes running. Thank you all for continuing to pray for my upcoming court date. In my human nature, I feel so weak and so nervous as I don’t want do this, it’s only my Jesus giving me strength.

  34. Donna Wolcott says:

Good morning, for those who don’t get the book, there is an added piece on the Trinity. It’s an excerpt from the Athanasian Creed. I had never heard of it before and looked up it’s origin. It goes back to at least 5th century and is recognized by many Christian denominations, although not used as much as other creeds. I will share just one piece
“we worship one God in Trinity and the Trinity in unity, neither blending their persons nor dividing their essence.
For the person of the Father is a distinct person, the person of the Son is another, and that of the Holy Spirit still another. But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.

    1. Kristy says:

Phenominal! Thank you so much for sharing. I am going to dig into this more.

    2. Margaret W. says:

It is also read aloud in this week’s podcast, for those who haven’t listened yet. I may have to go search the entire creed, because the excerpt is so beautiful.

    3. Cee Gee says:

❤ Cheryl, how interesting! I just printed off a graphic while researching on got questions yesterday. It is a great tool to help explain the Trinity and the site said “the best…they’ve seen.”

  35. Karen Breaux says:

❤✝️ “I am with you always!”

  36. Wendy B says:

Omnipresent is not a word we use often in our everyday conversation and that is perhaps appropriate because it really should be saved for its intended and specific use. There is nothing else that fits the description like our Heavenly Father. The passages today are so beautiful and rich. Wonderful reminders that God. Is. Present. At all times, in all ways. No matter where I am, how I’m feeling, where my heart is, where my head is, in the chaos, in the calm, in the questions, and everything in between, He is there. Thank you, Lord, thank you.✝️

Thank you all for sharing your insights and thoughts that add to this time of studying and learning. Praying through all of the many requests that are shared as we walk alongside one another.❤️

  37. Michelle P says:

“In Him we live, and move, and have our being…” Acts 17:28 ❤️

  38. Rhonda J. says:

Omnipresent! Not hard for me to imagine and know that ALMIGHTY God, creator of everything is everywhere…except when it comes to IN me! I know he is with me, for me and sees all, and knows all- but IN me always was a difficult concept to make sense of!! But last year my word was “Presence” and so I focused on God being inside me, just like eating my daily bread and gaining nutrients to power my cells, muscles, and blood…He too is in me powering my thoughts, feelings, steps, and ways. Moving as the Spirit moves, is hard to do and is quite foreign, the flesh is mighty and is sinful, and selfish. That is why Paul tells us we must die to self daily. His ways are not our ways…so that is the conundrum. Yes- a riddle to figure out. And it is an ongoing thing, but being in the Bible daily, conversing with Him, meditating is how we grow our relationship which thus makes us walk as he, talk as he, and want what he wants. We are being sanctified to be more like him…Holy, Holy, Holy! Do I feel “holy,” no, but my heart breaks for what his heart breaks for…a wayward, stiff-necked people that denounce God and want no part of him. I don’t understand how we could NOT want him..yet I was there too.
Lord..Help the church come back to you in a real and powerful way! The whole and individually! You are in everything…”for every good and perfect gift comes from you!” You are working all things for the good of those that love you…and not only are you everywhere far above and close—you are IN us! Omnipresent in your children! We have the power of you!! That should set us a fire!! It should have us dancing and shouting, singing with joy!! Sharing your love daily in big and small ways! Pointing out your beautiful creation around us daily. Taking care of the amazing creation that is ME! You created me, and you are IN me! Wow…let me just sit in that today and ponder the great love that it is. You not only want to be with your people, you want to be in them.

It was one of the most unexpected beautiful offerings of songs, praise and worship through so many young talents. The world is needing Jesus. So many artists are hurting through their songs. Culture is shifting through this show and the Lord is good and He is reaching out.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yeah, I was in amazement the whole time…then when Carrie sang the last song…wowzer! Just that they were able to use the name “Jesus” is huge! There is revival before the Coming!! And there is a whole lotta revival going on!

  39. Tanya Evans says:

Hebrew, “HaMakom” translates to “The Place”. It’s a divine name often used in Jewish prayers and texts, particularly when comforting mourners. “HaMakom” can also be understood as a metaphor for God, representing God as the source and container of everything, rather than being contained within a specific location. The rabbis believed that God was both far and near, awesome and intimate. As the soul fills the body, God’s presence pervades the universe. God as Hamakom, the Spacious One, was meant to convey as well that one could pray in one’s heart

  45. Kimberly says:

How can I become more aware of Gods presence in the ordinary moments of life? How can I find courage in knowing God is omnipresent?

    Father God,

Sometimes I forget just how close You really are. You’re not just up in the heavens or inside a church—you’re right here with me, in every moment. Whether I’m feeling strong or falling apart, You’re present. Whether I notice You or not, You never leave.

It’s comforting to know I don’t have to go searching for You—you’re already in the middle of my everyday life. In the quiet, in the chaos, even in the places I don’t want anyone to see—You’re there. And You don’t show up with judgment, but with love, patience, and grace.

Thank You for never walking away. For staying near when I feel distant. For being steady when everything around me feels unsure. Jesus, You promised to be with me always—and I want to live like that’s true.

Help me to notice You more. To talk to You more. To invite You into the little things, not just the big crises. And when I try to shut You out, remind me that Your presence isn’t something I have to earn—You’re already here.

I may not always feel it, but I believe You’re with me. And I’m grateful.
Stay close—and help me stay aware.

    Amen.

Before I’d even read the scriptures, Psalm 139, was running through my head!
I was so glad to see them up there with the readings.. I just love these words..
    .
Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I get away from your presence? If I went up to heaven, you would be there; if I lay down in the world of the dead, you would be there. If I flew away beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west, you would be there to lead me, you would be there to help me. I could ask the darkness to hide me or the light around me to turn into night, but even darkness is not dark for you, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
    .
What I love about these verses, in fact all of Psalm 139, is that written by David, even way back when ‘we’ were but a twinkle in the distant future, these words are so very true today.
Let’s face it, God was present in those days, as much as He was in the days of our ancestors, grandparents, parents, and ours, and He will be, for sure in our next generations to come..
He has never, NEVER, left His people, His children. HE has been present every step of our journeys, from way before the slave trade of my ancestors, and the wars of yours, to our present day, HE, has been..
    .
HE has been through the storms of our lives, ever present, the joys of our souls, the screams of our hearts.. Ever present.
There is no place HE has or is not with us, HIS people, HIS children, HIS family..in our despair, our disappointments, our failures, our wilderness times, our hope-less-ness, in our heart burning pain, our hope-less-mess, our brokenness. HE has been present in our joys, our celebrations, our highs..
    .
    Omnipresent, that is our GOD.
    .
Thankful for your presence in every aspect of my life, Father God, so, so very thankful that no matter where I am, or what I’m doing YOU, dearest Father God, are near and very present.
    Thank you.
    Thank you.
    Thank you.
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    AMEN.
    .
    .
Happy Wednesday, beloved, covered in much love, hugs and continued prayers..❤❤❤
