God Is Good

BY She Reads Truth

God is the standard of beauty, faithfulness, kindness, and truth. He is the source of all goodness.

To say God is great is to focus on His power: He speaks creation into existence, makes the skies thunder and rain, and sets the planets in their orbits. But to say God is good is different; it is not just another way of recognizing His power. The goodness of God speaks to His personal character—who He is in relationship to us. In all ways and in all things, God is good. He is never absent, disinterested, careless, ill-tempered, petty, spiteful, or mean. He is set apart from all evil and does what is right, faithful, kind, and true. Always.

True goodness is defined by who God is. He doesn’t just do good—He is good. In Psalm 119:68, the psalmist prays, “You are good, and you do what is good; teach me your statutes.” The key to understanding the goodness of God is learning who He is through His Word. If we don’t learn His statutes, we will bring our own definitions and impose them on God. And when He doesn’t do what we think He should, we will accuse Him of failing to be “good” by our own standards—not His.

In His goodness, God gives us what we need and withholds what we do not. If we ask for bread, He will not give us a harmful serpent or a useless stone, He will give us what we need (Luke 11:11; Matthew 7:9). The God who withholds no good thing is the same God who gives no bad thing. Sometimes we don’t realize that we ask God for stones and serpents. When we ask God to give us things that are useless or harmful, the good Father refuses. As sure as He will not give a serpent when His children ask for fish, neither will He give them a serpent when His children unwittingly ask for one.

Yes, God is great, but He is also good. All the time and in all things. He does good because He is good.

    One thing that made me stop to consider was that I might be judging God by MY standards of what good and bad is.

    These passages and this message made my heart sing this morning! What a wonderful truth! And it makes me think of the other morning when my 5 year old son broke down in tears in frustration because he couldn’t have lollipops for breakfast. He couldn’t understand why his mommy would keep such a treat from him. He couldn’t understand in that moment that the nutritious (and still very yummy I might add) food on his plate would bring him life and energy and a clear mind for a fun day.. whereas what he was pleading for would bring no energy and anxiety for his little body and ultimately poor health to him. (Sidenote: he gets a lollipop from time to time I’m not a monster)

    But it was a sharp reminder to be mindful of what I’m asking of our good God, and if His answer is no or not yet, my response be “you are good! And I trust in You”

    Something the Lord has laid on my heart a lot today is, just because I am tired does not mean today is not good. So often I associate the weariness of day to day life with negative feelings, but thank you Lord for feeling tired. That means you allowed me another day in your Earth and you have filled it intricately with works that have their own specific purpose for your kingdom. God is so good to me in every way and just because I am in a season that lacks a lot of physical rest, I know I can always turn to Him for spiritual and emotional rest throughout this time. He is SO GOOD to me, Lord show me the ways in which I miss this daily!!!!

    “You are good and do good;
    teach me your statutes” (Ps 119:68). He knows all. He is all powerful. And He is always good. I have limited knowledge. I am feeble. I do not understand His way or His purpose. But He is good. And He loves me. And so I trust Him! ❤️
