In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.
GOD: God’s unmatched power and majesty
Elohim is the first name used for God in the Bible. It appears in the opening verse of Scripture: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Elohim is a generic term for spiritual beings, translated as “god” or “gods.” The Israelites adapted elohim from el, an ancient word for “god,” as a name for the one true God. This name emphasizes His greatness and majesty over all creation and all other gods. Throughout Scripture this name is paired with descriptive words to distinguish God and His character from pagan gods (e.g., El Olam, “everlasting God,” El Roi, “God who sees,” and El Rahum, “merciful God”). Elohim is a reminder that the one true God is distinctly powerful.

I declared and saved and proclaimed when there was no strange God among you and you are my witnesses, declared the Lord and I am God. Isaiah 43:12
This is supposed to be a reply to Rhonda. It tells me it is a duplicate response and will not post. My back and hip are not happy today either, Rhonda. I’m struggling to move around. Prayers that God would take away our pain. Our church is praying the psalms this summer. We pick a psalm and read verse by verse praying whatever comes to mind from that verse. If nothing comes to mind, we move on to the next verse. It is praying God’s word back to Him. The book we are using is “Praying the Bible” by Donald S. Whitney. As a way to decide what Psalm, today is the 24th. You start with Psalm 24. If there is nothing in that psalm to pray, add 30 and pray Psalm 54 and so on. It is focused praying. Keeps our aging mind focused. Pray you have a good night.
oh Elaine, I’m sorry! I will think of you (and others with back pain–Donna, and I have a list). I probably did it to myself b/c I was praising at church with both hands up over my head for the whole time, and then second service as well! They were such powerful songs..lol!
It’s ironic (not really, God!) that you said praying Psalms back because just recently rather than listening to my normal praise songs at night, I have been playing a channel that sings the Psalms. He takes the pen and follows the words in the open bible. It is helping me meditate on them, learn them and pray them! But I like how you said to do as well- Thanks so much!! Thank you praying for me. I know many people have it worse. Also, if my pain hadn’t been worse in the last 3 years , we would have never started our church pain group!! So God is giving me purpose in the pain!! I try to suffer well for his Glory although it is frustrating.
Also, for anyone that suffers with chronic pain and feel like your life as you knew it has ended, I found a short, fast, easy book that summed it up well for me. It’s by Ester Smith, called “When Chronic Pain and Illness Take Everything Away. She points you to the God that tries to give you Himself when you feel like you have nothing else! Her first book is her question- wouldn’t I be more useful to God without this holding me back?! She started out young life excited as a missionary in college…then chronic Illness and took her down and out.
Genesis 1:3 reminds me that God (Elohim) has the power to speak light into darkness, not just in creation, but in our lives too. His word brings order, hope, and clarity when things feel chaotic. It’s a powerful reminder that He is still creating and restoring today. ❤️
♥️
YES, Amen!!
God can do the impossible.
This is so interesting to learn.
Distinctively, powerful! That He is!!! There is no god like our GOD! My God, my Jesus was with me the moment I walked up the steps to the courthouse. My best friend Gretchen met me there to pray with me. And the advocate that came with me was very sweet, and her presence was very comforting. Thank you all for praying for me. I know that I had strength because you all came with me sort of speak. The judge had us go outside the courtroom to come to some sort of agreement, at first, I was a little scared, but the advocate was with me and I knew I was in a safe place. The ex was not cooperative, I stood my ground and very firm. I finally told the ex the judge is going to have to decide. And boy, did he, the judge, I know this is not the platform to give details, but let’s just say I walked out of there very pleased. Now I wait to see if he complies with what the judge ordered him to do. Thank you ALL for faithfully praying.
Praise God for this amazing update. So proud of you for standing your ground!
What a wonderful outcome!! A testament to the power of prayer, and your persistence.
Praise God! I have been praying and will continue to!
Praise the Lord! I love how Jesus in you makes you strong and confident! Thankful for all the people God put in place yesterday to help, support an advocate for you!
Thank you Lord!❤️
Amen!!
So happy that God has once again shown you He is with you! And Praise God your friend and advocate were there!
Hey,ladies…my 7 year old g’daughter,Brielle got saved yesterday. God is o so good
Yes, he is !
(heart)!
O so precious. Congrats Sandi! Praying the Lord’s hand and favors on this sweet girl.
Thankyou
God is distinctly powerful! Such a simple statement, but a great reminder of who we serve. He alone is in control. God alone has the power to save!
Isaiah 43:10 says we have been chosen to KNOW God, BELIEVE in God, and UNDERSTAND that He alone is God. The name today emphasizes that there are spirits of this world but they are not our all powerful only God
As I read Psalm 42 today I saw that weaved throughout the Psalmist sorrow, is a remembrance. A remembrance of who God is. He is the living God, the Mighty One, Elohim. When he switches his focus to remembering, it changes his perspective and he has hope – which causes him to praise his Savior and God.
—
To often I get caught up in the sorrow of things. I need to remember every good thing God has done for me, every trial He has walked me through, every blessing He has bestowed on me, every temptation He has given me the power to overcome.
.
I need to remember always that my hope is in God – not in this world, the leaders of this world or the way of the world. My God is here, with me, directing His love toward me. That He is Elohim, the God of power and majesty. It is in Him alone that my hope lies, and that gives me much reason to praise Him, my Savior and my God!
Sharon, that theme of rememberance stood out to me today as well. It is a powerful reminder of why it is so important to be women in the word every day – rooting ourselves in rememberance.
Amen!!! This is exactly it. Well said.
Wise words, SJG!!
Taken to heart.
Remembering is what all the holidays or moedims are about in the Bible. When G-d gave the Israelites the feasts in the Torah, they were about remembering Him. A lot of people I know that are pious Jews don’t really celebrate secular holidays because they have nothing to do with G-d.
Thank you for your perspective on this ❤️
ELOHIM–A God who brings order out of chaos, light out of darkness, and life out of nothing. That’s the same Elohim who is at work in your life today. No situation is too chaotic for Him to bring peace. No heart is too broken for Him to restore. No dream is too lost for Him to breathe life back into it.
♥️♥️♥️
Amen! ❤️
Amen! Grateful for this reminder today especially. Prayers for my sister-in-law would be much appreciated – she was admitted to the hospital yesterday of her own volition due to intrusive thoughts of self-harm. May the Lord God bring His peace and restoration to her as she fights this battle!
Praying for her! And thankful she went in when she had those thoughts.
❤️
Wow! I just listened to the podcast for this week and it is so good. What wonderful insight!
Glad to see you Tricia.

Love all these passages for today but these 2 verses in particular stand out to me.
“I, I am the Lord,
and besides me, there is no Savior.” Isa 43:11
‘By day the LORD commands His steadfast love, and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.’ Psalm 42:8
There is no one like God. He is YHWH, God over all. There is great comfort and peace in what we know to be truth. God, you are my God. Thank you, Lord.
The short chorus/Sunday School song I sang as a child comes back to me this morning.
God you are my God, and I will ever praise you. I will seek you in the morning. I will learn to walk in you ways and step by step you’ll lead me and I’ll follow you all of my days.
❤️
Oh Wendy – that song brought back memories! ❤️
Love to the little child within, Wendy B.
“I, even I, am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.
I have declared and saved,
I have proclaimed,
And there was no foreign god among you;
Therefore you are My witnesses,”
Says the Lord, “that I am God.
Indeed before the day was, I am He;
And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand;
I work, and who will reverse it?” (Isaiah 43:11–13, NKJV)
I love that the Lord reiterates over and over again that he alone is God, and there is no other. But, at the same time, it is a shame that he has to do that. We just can’t seem to get it into our heads that he is the only one.
Praying today that we can truly remember that there is no other God. Our phones, our spouses, our jobs, our social life, our church – none of that should come before our Lord and Savior.
Blessed Tuesday, Sisters. ❤️
Amen to your prayer!
God is God, I am not. I’m so thankful for that. I love learning and figuring things out, but God already knows it all! He has it all figured out! He doesn’t need me or any of us but thankfully He chose us! Hallelujah!
Amen!
We as women want to “fix it” or “control” situations and others! But we need to SURRENDER to the One that has it already in his hands!
Erica your first sentence brought me to tears. G-d is G-d I am not!I need to remind this ever so often.
Amen
Yes! Amen!
I say that all the time! He is God and I am not. Yes, as women fixers, we have to keep reminding ourselves of that fact.
I imagine that men find it even harder to trust that they are not in control because it’s in their nature to control. Pray today for the men in your lives, Shes.
Go and be the church!
Psalm 42:8 “By day the LORD (YHWH) commands His steadfast love, and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God (El) of my life.” Amen!
Reading through the prayer requests mentioned and noting them to pray!
If you could pray for my daughter, CP. She has grown very liberal over the past couple years and even more so over her first year in college. It is difficult to get her to go to church with us regularly this summer. I want her faith to be her own and she has gone and participated all of her life. Even served at their church camp for en entire summer before her junior year. My heart breaks. But I pray. Thank you in advance!
Yes, Tara B, I think many of us have/had this situation! My son majored in Politic Science! (gasp emoji) He still goes to church on Christmas and Easter by himself (at this point) and when he visits me, but definitely doesn’t outwardly show any faith in his worldly life and friends. But I am believing that I raised him in the word and he will not depart when he is old. Let’s add Cp and M to the list of prodigal children! You still have great influence! Stay faithful!
Praying for your daughter❤️
I’m sorry. Have prayed for your daughter❤️
With G-d all things are possible!
I’m so sorry Tara. My heart breaks for you – I too have 2 adult prodigal sons. I will be praying for CP.
My children gave up on God when their dad walked out the door, and I know how much it hurts. But I also know that what they need most right now is our unconditional love, a listening ear, and not to be nagged about going to church. There is much going on in the church (as a whole, I can’t speak to your specific church or any one’s in particular) that doesn’t show the love of Jesus. It might help to be willing to listen to where they see that. I certainly see it, although most of what I hear from my church’s pulpit, I am good with. And when I have concerns, I bring them to my pastor. The fact that I can is why I am still there. Meanwhile, prayer and unconditional love are the way of Jesus. ❤️
In case you missed it, Adrienne posted a comment yesterday about a free prayer guide to pray for our adult children. When I searched for that, a “Moms in Prayer” podcast (was this the podcast you listened to Adrienne??) entitled “Loving your Prodigal” came up with the author (Mary DeMuth) as the guest. She has written a book on the subject, and I would recommend the podcast for any of us in that situation. It gives hope and helps free us from (at least some of) the guilt.
No, B, it was “Pray Every Day” with Mary Dumuth. It is one where she reads through the Bible. And sometimes, it is right where we are in the scriptures. It was mentioned here previously. I subscribed and haven’t stopped listening. I am a “podcast junkie”, so I will look for the one you mentioned. I have yet to get into that free ebook. (I’ve only downloaded it. I have some prodigals too, and a possible future daughter-in-law that isn’t an atheist, and is not antagonistic toward Christ, but she has walked away from her church upbringing. Our youngest son wants to be supportive of her. Hard to do when you are a Christian. Being “unequally yoked” will make things even harder for him. Now, I know his walk is different than mine. I DO think he has a personal relationship with Jesus, but sometimes I think he could “live it out more”.)
I too have a son in a relationship with an unbeliever and my heart aches for my son and his walk away from his faith.
Just wanted to jump in here to encourage you. My daughter began doing & acting contrary to what she was taught when she went to college as well. She would not listen to me or take advice. Boy have i prayed! Psalm 121 was the Psalm I was led to pray over her. And i want to encourage you with this, she eventually renewed her faith in her Savior, stronger than before. Now it’s not my faith, or her family’s faith, it is hers. Keep anger out of your relationship with her and let the Lord keep knocking and calling her home. He is faithful! He never gives up!
This is a good week for me to start this study of the names of God- the One who was before all things, and created all things. I had mentioned I am started my Practicing Prayer group last Saturday! Last week we simply started the conversation of what prayer is and why we struggle with it. But this week to start off the trek of prayer, we must know who He is! If we don’t know who He is then prayer is just throwing up words of the pagans to the air. When we honestly know him, and who he is, and trust his word, and that he loves us and cares for each of us- that is the faith of a Christian and why we pray to him.
@Tanya- thanks for sharing the quote that will be good to share with my group!
My back and hips are not happy today. Prayers appreciated!
Praying for your back & hip today Rhonda. ❤️
Praying Rhonda! So sorry to hear.

I guess it must have posted, sorry for the duplication.

In NKJV, Psalms 42-72 are noted as Book 2, “Yearning for God in the Midst of Distresses.” He is always with us, always working in our behalf, and we yearn to see Him and what He’s doing in the hard times. Lord, I pray my faith and trust in You alone would be strengthened.

Bereshit bara Elohim et hashamayim ve’et haaretz) which means “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
Beginning and the origin of all creative things. The foundations of the earth and the sea were made by him.
G-d is the completely self existing one revealed in Jesus. Some Biblical translations in place of the word G-d uses
“The Eternal”.
I am quoting Anne Spangler:When we pray to Elohim, we remember that He is the one who began it all, creating the heavens and earth, separating the light from the darkness, water from dry land, night from day. This ancient name for G-d contains the idea of G-d’s creative power as well as his authority and sovereignty. Jesus used a form of the name in his agonized prayer from the cross.”About three in the afternoon, Jesus cried out with a loud voice,’Eloi,Eloi, lama sabachthani- which means, My G-d, my G-d, why have you forsaken me? Psalm 22:1.
G-d simply cannot be defined by one name. The Kabbalist believe G-d has 76 known names. Other Rabbinic sources believe it is 125 names.
Interesting Tanya, thank you for this insight..♥️
Thank you ❤️

Wow, thank you for sharing that!
Thank you. Tanya!

Thank you for sharing that Tanya!
Thank you Tanya ❤️
Tanya, I notice you have some familiarity with Hebrew. Have you ever listened to Paul Wilbur’s music? He is a Jewish Christian ( both in family) and has written beautiful music. I watch his videos with lyrics and his praise for God and Son is a mix of both languages.
I really enjoy his music! Desert Rain was a one of his CDs I bought a long time ago. Thank you for recommending him.
Yes, Tanya!
