In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.

FATHER: The personal, familial, and intimate name for God

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He told them to address God as “our Father” (Matthew 6:9). When He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane before His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus cried out, “Abba, Father,” using personal and relational names for God (Mark 14:36). Abba is an Aramaic word, from the Hebrew Ab, for “father,” while Pater is used in the Greek.

These are deeply familial names when used to address God. Belief brings us into a close yet respectful relationship with God, the holy Creator of all things. Father is a reverential yet personal name for God.

  1. Morgan Garrett says:

God as our Father, a real Father. Some in the world have had a bad father(praise God I had a good father). They can turn to the True Father who cares, guides, and leads His children. He is a loving, patient,

  2. Alayna P. says:

I chose Mark 14:36 for the reflection. I love that it shows me that I can come to God as Father, even in my hardest moments. Jesus cried “Abba” with both honesty and surrender. It reminds me I can bring my pain to God and still trust His will because He’s a Father who loves me.

A little late but here I am just before bed. One thing led to another and I was not here in the morning with all of you. I’m so sleepy now read tomorrows scriptures, but that’s OK. I just read the ones for today. I’m very sleepy but I want to share something and maybe I already did. When my daughter was baptized (ironically on fathers day), she shared a little about her earthly father may not have been present/part of her life, but grateful for her Father God who is and even went as far to say: HE is my Father!

    1. Wendy B says:

What s beautiful testimony. Praise the Lord for the ways in which He drew close to your daughter’s heart

  5. Rhonda J. says:

Thank you Almighty Creator and Lord of Lords, King of kings, for being my Heavenly Father as well. You want relationship with us through Jesus Christ! What a gift!!

Having a rough back day…shouldn’t have held a sweet baby last night, but how can you not! It is my bestie’s baby girl that I’m meeting for the first time, in town for a visit. The pain is not so much a concern if I could just lay down- but off to jail in a few, so have to sit in a hard chair and teach for 2 hours!! Thank you for your prayers!! Thank you Father for hearing the prayers of your children!! I love my sisters in Christ Prayer Warriors!

Tami, again, praying for you and the kids. Love you and hugs.

    1. Mercy says:

Praying for relief of pain, and strength to go on. So sorry Rhonda.

    2. Indiana Elaine says:

Praying for your back, Rhonda. Praying that the joy of teaching is balm for your back!! Not a good day here either. I blame the weather!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yeah, weather definitely effects me as well! It went well..my leg (the nerve damage) was a little more intense, but yes, the talking about the Lord is always good and makes me focus on him through the pain!!

        Thank you Mercy!

God is my Father and creator!

Thank you for your prayers yesterday. I will follow up once I know the results.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Traci, I love those verses, too, and did a cover page with some of the passage. If you’re interested I could share on FB. Still praying, sister! ❤

  9. Tanya says:

    Good morning Shes,

” G-d in his holy dwelling is a father of the fatherless and a champion of widows. G-d provides homes for those who are deserted.”

Love, love this verse. G-d has showed up for me in some very big ways. My parents got divorced when I was three. My dad out of retaliation to my mom was absent. He provided no financial support nor emotional support. He was not present at all. Once when I was six, he came to visit me and he bought me a very expensive dollhouse my mother could not afford to buy me. After he took me home, he said let’s go in and eat lunch. He didn’t take the dollhouse out of the car. He and my mom got into an argument and he drove away with the dollhouse. I don’t think I saw him for another 10 years. He told me later when I was an adult,he did things to me to get back at my mom.
G-d has been there for me. Showing up when I needed Him.He has been there a present help in the time of trouble a protector from bad relationships, a provider when I needed cars,or jobs. I am glad to be able to look back over my life and be able to see G-d as Father.

    1. Cee Gee says:

    2. Traci Gendron says:

Heartbreaking. I’m so sorry your father treated you this way.

Lean into your Heavenly Father for He is good.

    3. Mercy says:

♥️ hugs and love sister. May the Lord heal the wounds and the memories.

    4. Wendy B says:

Oh Tanya…Im so sorry for the ways your father hurt you. Praise the Lord, our Heavenly Father for how He wrapped you in His arms, leading you, protecting you and loving you.

  10. Cheryl Blow says:

Thank all of you for your insights! God is our Father! What a better way to start our day knowing God is our Father and we can run to Him for protection, comfort, healing, peace and love. He is faithful and true. Even if you had the best father in the world, they were all human and made mistakes! But God is the perfect Father, we can trust Him even when we don’t understand everything about Him or why things are like they are. He is a good, good Father!

Oh, I’ve heard a thousand stories of what they think You’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And You tell me that You’re pleased and that I’m never alone
    You’re a good, good Father
It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are
    And I’m loved by You
    It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
Oh, and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching for answers only You provide
‘Cause You know just what we need before we say a word
    You’re a good, good Father
It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are
    And I’m loved by You
    It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
Because You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us
You are perfect in all of Your ways
Oh, You’re perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us
    Oh, it’s love so undeniable
    I, I can hardly speak
    Peace so unexplainable
    I, I can hardly think
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still into love, love, love
    You’re a good, good Father
It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are
    And I’m loved by You
    It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
And You’re a good, good Father
It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are
    And I’m loved by You
    It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
    You’re a good, good Father
It’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are
    And I’m loved by You
    It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
    (You’re a good, good Father)
You are perfect in all of Your ways (it’s who You are, it’s who You are, it’s who You are)
    (And I’m loved by You)
You are perfect in all of Your ways (it’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am)

I heard Run to the Father by Matt Maher a bit ago driving home and it was soothing as I had a tiring day at work. Praying for everyone.

      1. Cee Gee says:

I thought of that one this afternoon, too! ❤ Great mention, AZ!

  11. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

He is a good, good Father – and I am loved by Him.

One of my favorite verses is 1 John 3:1, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
How comforting it is to have a Heavenly Father that loves me so, especially since I did not receive that kind of love from my earthly father.
    .
He is our creator, yet He is our Father as well and He takes pleasure in us. I feel so undeserving of His love, but so forever thankful and grateful. We are truly blessed to be called a child of God!

The song, Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin comes to mind this morning.

@Tami – I am sorry for your loss Tami, may you find comfort in knowing that BJ is no longer suffering and is now with his heavenly Father. Prayers for your family. ❤️

    Happy Wednesday She’s.

  12. Cee Gee says:

    Galatians 4:6-7 (NLT)
And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”
7 Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

  13. Gwineth52 says:

    Dear Shes
Psalm 68:5 captured my mind this morning:
“God in His Holy dwelling is a father of the fatherless and a champion of widows”.
How tender His care, how strong His protection, how loving His embrace of the weak, marginalized, vulnerable.
What release, what comfort, what peace His presence brings.
    Supported. Sustained. Shielded.
Gathered under His wings, as the mother bird covers her young.
    Thanks be to God.

  14. Cathy McVey says:

Good morning She’s. Happy Monday. Could I please ask for prayers for my daughter, Brittannie? As I write this, she is in surgery for a severe back injury that she has suffered with for years. Almost constantly in pain. The surgery will take 4-5 hours. I have traveled down to North Dakota to help care for her family and help her recover. Please pray for a successful surgery and complete healing. And please pray for me as I care for these littles and survive the heat! This Alaska girl doesn’t do well with these hot summer temps. Thank you in advance for your prayers ❤️

    1. Melani Fryer says:

Praying for your daughter’s surgery and healing afterwards. For you, that the Lord will give you the strength and patience with taking care of the littles and the household. That He would bring you comfort through the heat and acclimate you quickly.

    2. Cee Gee says:

Oh, Cathy, that is a lot for you! Praying for successful surgery, recovery with no complications, and a break in the heat; also strength and patience for caring for the littles with lots of happy memories to store away. Safe travel back to Alaska!

    3. Tanya says:

Father G-d in the name of Jesus thank you for a successful surgery and the complete healing of pain for Brittannie.Thank you for being ever present in the operating room and imparting wisdom and knowledge to the doctors involved.
Also, Sister Cathy needs an extra bountiful amount of patience as she cares for the littles and endures the heat.

    4. Traci Gendron says:

Dear Lord I pray over Brittannie having surgery this morning. That the docs will have wisdom and the surgery will be successful. I pray for an easy recovery. I also ask for safety for Cathy’s travels.

    5. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Cathy, praying for Brittannie – that surgery will go well, she will find relief from her pain and have a good recovery. And for you as you care for the family & endure the hot weather. ❤️

    6. MI Sherry says:

Praying that your Mama’s heart (and Grandma’s heart) would be comforted and strengthened by the Almighty Father and that the love and care you receive from Him would flow out as you care for your family.

    7. Susan Burley says:

Praying for you & your daughter! May the surgery be successful & provide her relief!

    8. Rhonda J. says:

Oh Cathy, prayers for the surgery! I can tell you…when I had major spine revision surgery (very dangerous and long 7 hour surgery!) my mom and dad came to be there for me, take care of me (for 2 months!) and helped with my son that was 4. I can’t tell you what a blessing it was (even though I didn’t always show it!!) You get grumpy when you are in pain long term. What helped them a lot as they traveled first back and forth to the hospital, then at home with me, was my church family bringing them meals so they didn’t have to worry with all that. It is such a blessing when moms can take care of us when we can’t. Thank you for sharing. Please give us update on the surgery.

      1. Foster Mama says:

That’s a beautiful testimony RHONDA J ❤️ (and praying for others to come onside to help carry the load)

Praying for CATHY MCVEY for each moment of travel, stress of the surgery and recovery, caring for (and making beautiful memories with) the littles, temperature regulation, ….every little and big detail.

    9. AZ Walker says:

Praying Brittanie’s surgery and recovery goes well and your visit to help out goes smoothly too. Thankful for air conditioning!

    10. DW says:

Praying for you as you step in and for your daughter as she recovers.

    11. Wendy B says:

Praying for your daughter and that surrounds this need

  15. GramsieSue says:

Praying for you Tami in your loss that God would give you comfort and peace.
Praying for all of you waiting for test results…
Big hugs for all of you. ❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Yes! ❤

  16. Wendy B says:

The closeness and familiarity of the word Father moves us to a level of connectedness and nearness that can only be from God – He is Abba Father and we are children under His care, in the shadow of His wings. I immediately think of the Lord’s Prayer when God is referenced as Father. He is Lord over all in heaven, Sovereign in every way and our Abba Father. Thanks be to God.

    ABBA Father.

  18. Jennifer Jackson says:

    Romans 8:14-17

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons[a] of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

      Dear Tina
I caught the allusion to “mat carriers”.
Sister Shes who actively “support & assist” one another in whatever physical, emotional, spiritual need. Like the four friends & their paralyzed friend in the gospels. We are your faith community in difficult times. Prepared for heavy lifting. Praise the Lord.

    12. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Tina, praying for you today! Praying that whatever the results are, God will be glorified. You are a strong believer, a prayer warrior, a mighty soldier – you’ve got this…because God has it, and He has you in His hands. Scary stuff yes – but God can take away all our fears, praying that He does that for you. Hugs and prayers from across the pond. ❤️
