Dedication of the Wall

Open Your Bible

Nehemiah 12:27-47, Isaiah 62:1-7

Hananiah is not even a nobody on the pages of history. Google him, and you’ll find less than enough to fill a Wikipedia page. He is a fleeting mention in a book of the Bible titled to another, greater man. Hananiah’s legacy has turned to dust—ah, but dust gets reshaped into beauty in God’s kingdom.

Hananiah and the other names listed in Nehemiah 12 left their mark on the world through raucous rejoicing. With one blast of his trumpet Hananiah declared what’s truer than truer than true.

“The Lord reigns!” “He really loves us!” “He alone can rebuild what is broken.” “Come and worship Him.”

Can’t you picture Hananiah perched on the rebuilt wall that once stood in ruins? Can’t you feel joy rise again in his chest after the devastation of God’s people and His city had tried so hard to snuff it out? Can’t you sense the ground begin to hum again with the hope that God never abandons His people and that He’s never, ever done working all things to our good? Can’t you hear that, and so much more, in Hanahiah’s choice to blow the trumpet?

Does it make you want to sing praises too?

Do it! I can picture Hananiah and the others waving us in to join the celebration.

You’ve got your own ruins. I’m sure of it. All fallen creatures do. You’ve seen hopes smashed and dashed. You’ve looked around and wondered, “What can God do with all this mess?”

But you can also have Hanahiah’s hope. You can open your Bible and know: What God has scattered, He often gathers. What He allows to crumble, He also rebuilds. Though He convicts, He also forgives. Sing Hanaiah’s song:

On that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy.
—Nehemiah 12: 43

Just like the Israelites of Nehemiah’s era, we know what sorrow tastes like. The Christian life is no pie-in-the-sky hope built on happy thoughts. And yet, we can also be people who, “celebrate the joyous dedication with thanksgiving and singing accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres” (v.27).

Why?

Because God has given us “great joy” (v.43). He has given us Himself. Because of Jesus we ought to never stop singing.

Hananiah is more than a nobody. He and other priests stood on that wall to declare a message—the message your beating heart is dying to hear. You were made to praise the Lord. To be a trumpet blower in the procession of the Lord is enough.

Grab a pot and wooden spoon.
Warm up those vocal chords.
Decide to praise Jesus so loudly that your rejoicing will be heard far away (v.43).

Leave your mark on the world by praising the One who is worthy. Soon, we will join our own procession. We will enter the gates of heaven with thanksgiving. Let all who hold onto Hananiah’s hope that there is a God who loves us rejoice for He is more than worthy.

Really grateful for the timing of this just a few days after the anniversary of Helene’s destruction here in Appalachia. What happened here gives me a better appreciation of how the Israelites must have felt seeing Jerusalem destroyed, and today’s reading gives me hope for the work of rebuilding. I’m deeply moved by how God rebuilds us, too.

Lately the Lord has impressed on me very strongly about the faceless and nameless ministry, the ones that people would never know, the names that are not even put out there. It means serving God without seeking recognition, fame or credit. I love that. There is freedom and protection from ego, self glory, competition and comparison. And that keeps the focus on Christ and not the messenger. If Hananiah is unknown to Google, that is okay in my opinion lol. For the Lord knows and He does detail bookkeeping (reckoning) of what every man does, and the reward will be due according to their deeds. Isn’t that just so wonderful to think about? He sees when people don’t see. Dedication of the rebuilt walls. These are the walls we just learnt about, that were built in just 52 days against all manners of opposition? What an incredible accomplishment, and now they dedicated it to the Lord. This reminds me of baby dedication. But never thought of rebuilt wall dedication? Why not right? What areas of ruins do we need to rebuild and dedicate to the Lord today? And within 52 day time frame, would that be too good to be true? Ask and it shall be given. All things are possible to those who believe. At the beginning of the study, many potential areas were suggested for us to pray about, such as to rebuild health, fitness, finance, marriage, relationships, ministry, etc. And to have things done in 52 days are wild. Yet the Lord says, is there anything too hard for Me? Something we should all ponder about today and boldly ask God. I would ask God to rebuild families of the nations, to rebuild faith, rebuild dinner times that all can sit together and give thanks to God for the food on the table, to rebuild strong connections. Update on the provincial teacher strike, negotiations are ongoing, and they need to hire extra 3000 teachers to accommodate the massive increase of students, there are rejections and tensions so please pray for a fair and just solution, help and resources to come. Thank you shes for your prayers that change things. I believe the prayers of the righteous avail much. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Julia C says:

Wise words, sister ❤️ I think sometimes I am afraid to pray “the big prayers” because I would not know what to do if God said ‘no’… I know God is able, but I think that sometimes I doubt His goodness to me. You know what I mean?

Nehemiah 12:43,”On that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy.h The women and children also celebrated, and Jerusalem’s rejoicing was heard far away.”

Today, I woke up to my car alarm going off at 6:30 am and I could not get it to shut off until 8:30 when the tow truck came, jumped it, and then took it into the shop.

I did not wake up praising the Lord this morning, but I guess my car did (SHOUTING)!

Today, during the unexpected, I am striving to praise the Lord for the abundant ways in which He provides, just like He has for generations.

    Blessings of the morning:
    – Understanding and kind neighbors
    – Friend offering their AAA to tow our car free of charge.
    – A work from home job.
    – Knowledgable mechanics and AAA agents
    – A sense of humor.
    – Provision of finances to fix the car.
    – Margin in schedule.

God provides! I am so grateful for you Lord, thank you for being the same yesterday, today, and forever!

    1. Mercy says:

Wow, what a wonderful perspective you have. Thank you for reminding me to count my blessings. Praying for your car.

      1. Adrienne says:

Yes, Mercy, a very good perspective indeed! Unfortunately many people wouldn’t have the same outlook as Chloe. I would like to think I would, but would I?

    2. Julia C says:

I used to make a blessings list! Thanks for the reminder ❤️

    3. Cee Gee says:

That is so uplifting! Thanks, Chloe! ❤

ERIN DAVIS – This devo is so beautifully written. Thank you!
    .
I know it’s weird, but the theme from Rocky was running through my head- you know the scene where he FINALLY runs full out to the top of those steps with arms raised, fists pumping, feet jumping! That is a modern day/secular picture to me of the joy these people must have felt/the praise to the One True God!
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤
    .
Oh, almost forgot! I wanted to share this Wiersbe quote on v. 43:
“Not only the professional musicians expressed praise to God, for the women and children also joined in the singing. They had heard the Word at the Water Gate (8:2), so they rightfully expressed their worship, for learning the Word and worshiping the Lord must go together (Col. 3:12). We must never permit the accomplished ministry of worship leaders to take the place of our own spontaneous celebration of the Lord’s goodness. Otherwise, we will become spectators instead of participants, and spectators miss most of the blessing.”

Can’t Steal My Joy (feat. Brandon Lake)
    Song by
    Josiah Queen
    Whoa, whoa
    Whoa
In the valley of the shadow
I got a feeling it’s the season that’ll make me grow
I’m still breathing, I got praise in my lungs
And a choir in my soul
    Can’t steal my joy
    Can’t steal my joy
What the world couldn’t give, no, it can’t take away
Sorrow may come but it can’t
    Steal my joy
    Can’t steal my joy
In the high highs, in the low lows
You fill my cup, You fill it up until it overflows
I remember, I’ll keep holding on to hope
‘Cause you’re the King of rolling stones
Can’t steal my joy (can’t steal my)
Can’t steal my joy, no, no, no, no
What the world couldn’t give, no, it can’t take away
Sorrow may come but it can’t
Steal my joy, no, no, no, no
    Can’t steal my joy
    Whoa, whoa, whoa
    Can’t steal my joy
    Whoa, whoa, whoa
Can’t steal my joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Down in my soul, deep in my bones
I got the joy, joy, joy I can’t contain
    Nothing can quiet my praise
I got the joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Down in my soul, deep in my bones
I got the joy, joy, joy I can’t contain
    Nothing can quiet my praise
    Can’t steal my joy
    Can’t steal my joy
Can’t steal my joy (can’t steal my)
Can’t steal my joy, no, no, no, no
What the world couldn’t give, no, it can’t take away
Sorrow may come but it can’t
Steal my joy, no, no, no, no (can’t steal my joy)
You fill my cup, You fill it up until it overflows (whoa, whoa)
You fill my cup, You fill it up until it overflows (whoa)
You fill my cup, You fill it up until it overflows (whoa, whoa)
You fill my cup, You fill it up (whoa)
    Can’t steal my joy

Please pray for the people affected by the attacked at the Yom Kippur service in England. The enemy is still launching attacks on the Jewish people. This is the holiest day of the year. Pray that the Lord will open their eyes to the true Messiah and atonement happened on the cross.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Tanya, great song! I have not had the news on so I wasn’t aware of this attack! Thanks for mentioning it. Very sad indeed! ❤

Yes, I read the news… Praying with you ❤️

  22. Rhonda J. says:

I love Praise and Worship!! Worship is who we are all the time, and yet, when we go to church or anywhere, and worship together, honoring our Lord with our Spirit in thankfulness, honoring, reverent respect, and awe- it is so special.
Praise is what we do! I see it as our joy in the Lord, Praising Him for his goodness with shouts of praise, singing and dancing!! Oh, I grew up where we stood respectfully and our hands by our sides singing hymns, which I do love hymns! BUT…I love praise music where we can move, sing with our hands in the air and show SO MUCH JOY that we LOVE God…and SO thankful for Him!
It is especially touching to be at jail on Wednesdays these last couple of years and see them singing songs in the midst of their heavy trial. One of my dear ones has recently been giving earth shattering news that very well affects her to the core. Possible death sentence. Yet she came in with a smile and appreciation for us coming to keep her hope alive. One has been there for 2 years with no trial yet. It is a hopeless place but my butterflies know that He is our only hope and they sing, worship, and praise His Holy Name!

I also love the parts of scripture that keeps re-enforcing the importance of Jerusalem and God’s chosen people and land. Israel will always be Gods chosen. The people may not praise him and worship in all centuries and time frames, or do what we feel is correct, yet, the will remain God’s apple of his eye. The rapture will happen, and 2 witnesses will come, and be seen by all, and bring back belief to Jews that Jesus is the Messiah!! Those Christians that were left will also turn after seeing and knowing…but they will suffer hard, hard times and be martyred for the sake of Jesus!! Read Ezekiel and Revelations. It is so good that it tells us of the birthing pains! And so we are prepared and ready, Praise God! Praise God! Keep your armor readied to go, put it on each day. Nehemiah is not a coincidental reading right now…it is to keep our eyes fixed on Israel right now. A tiny little nation the size of New Jersey, yet all nations eyes are on what is happening there and the nations surrounding, making alliances just like in the days of old!

We too, have broken places and ashes that need some beauty again!! I am so thankful that God cares not just of Israel, but each one of his children’s life, and those that don’t know him. It is mind-blowing his love and care, So as none should perish without opportunity to know him. But there shall be no excuses on the day of judgement. What is sad that IF we know…and we waste our life selfishly not ministering and blessing others with that knowledge. That is a sin. A sad sin…for how can we NOT share the good news? Be a light on the hill and to all those we encounter?

Be joyful today, despite what is weighing you down! God holds it all in his hands and all of our tears in a bottle! Hallelujah!

My church has began a Praise and Worship service every first Thursday of the month which is TONIGHT!!! It is something I so LOVE and want to go, but my back usually puts me on the couch by 7, which is the time it starts. Last month it was so hard, even as my Spirit LOVES it!! I want to go tonight, thank you for back prayers!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Rhonda, I love that praise and worship night idea! Many many years ago our Baptist church had Fifth Sunday Sing. This was before contemporary music replaced the hymnal so anyone who had a request could shout it out and the leader would choose and we all sang! Such exuberant praise!
Praying for your back to hold up just a bit longer this evening so you can go. ❤

      1. Indiana Elaine says:

Oh Cee Gee, I remember those good ole hymn sings. Also Youth For Christ hymn sings on Sunday evenings. Those were special times of praise.

        1. Cee Gee says:

      2. Cathy McVey says:

Our little church has fifth Sunday singing. There is lunch after church service is over then everyone goes back into the sanctuary and sings. Anyone can go up and sing or request songs for the Worship Team to sing. So good!

      3. Rhonda J. says:

We would do that Sunday nights at our little Methodist church. I just told my hubby I miss going to church on Sunday night, a chance to wear jeans and call out songs you want to sing! I told him my mom would have to stop me b/c I always wanted to should out my favs every week!!

        1. Cee Gee says:

          ❤ sweet memory!

    2. Mercy says:

Wow so good sister. What you shared makes me feel so emotional. As the days of Noah, so shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man. People were still partying up until the moment Noah entered the ark. Geez. Clueless. Same thing is now. They mock, they blaspheme, they kill those that are sent to call them to repent -thinking they are heroes. What depraved minds and hardened hearts. They carry on with their lives, yet the warnings, the signs are everywhere and they shut their ears.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        Yes, exactly.

    3. Adrienne says:

Prayers for your back, sweet sister! ❤️

    4. Julia C says:

Prayers for your butterflies, and that you can worship tonight! ❤️

Thank you Adrienne and Julia. I did not go! But I Praise and sing all day every day, so it’s good! :)

  23. Tami says:

“He alone can rebuild what is broken.” “Come and worship Him.” I’m thinking about the rebuilding process and what we have seen throughout this book. In spite of opposition both externally (enemy nations) and internally (his own people), Nehemiah pressed on. Day and night, building and watching, never stopping. I’m sure there were many moments of despair, doubt, and discouragements. BUT GOD sustained them because only He can “rebuild what is broken”. This makes me pause and consider what is “broken” in my own life, and gives me hope to just keep adding brick after brick to rebuild, remembering God’s promises to sustain me. Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Have a blessed day ladies! Catching up today after being sick all week and trying to push through at work. So hard to take off when you are a teacher.

    2. Rhonda J. says:

Amen, amen! He restores what is broken, scattered, deserted!
I wondered where you have been! Nothing worse yes then being sick, glad it’s almost Friday for you!

    3. Mercy says:

So sorry to hear you have been sick. Praying for strength and good health sister.

    4. Adrienne says:

Sorry you’ve been sick, Tami. Have you ever seen the NyQuil commercial about moms and how they can’t take a sick day? It totally the same for teachers! ❤️

      1. Tami says:

Ha ha I have and yes it is sooo true!

“…the hope that God never abandons His people and that He’s never, ever done working all things to our good?”

I probably sound like a broken record, and I wish I could move on to the rejoicing stage when it comes to our church ministry. – For the past 5 years God has been purging and “weeding” our church. We are now very small – our nursery was shut down due to lack of volunteers, our offerings are way under budget and we are without a worship leader, who right now is out on maternity leave and has hinted that she won’t be returning.
    .
As we’ve read in today’s scripture, music was a very vital part of celebration and worship. Because we are without a worship leader, Jeff has had to resort to leading hymns instead of the praise & worship songs we love and had been singing. Leading the singing is not Jeff’s gift – he’s a pastor not a worship leader, plus the fact many of our people are newer believers and are not familiar with the hymns. It makes it very difficult to worship with joy and rejoicing.
    .
I don’t mean to be complaining – I love our church and our ministry, it’s just that we’ve been waiting a long time to see God do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think.
    .
I know God has a plan and a purpose and it’s just really hard to be in the “waiting room”. I’d so appreciate your prayers for patience in the waiting, and that indeed we will see God’s mighty hand at work soon.
    .
All praise to Jesus – the one who never fails!
    .
This song by Elevation Worship – I Trust In God

    Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine
He’s been my fourth man in the fire, time after time
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
And what He did for me on Calvary is more than enough
    .
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
    He will never fail
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
    He will never fail
    .
Perfect submission, all is at rest
I know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps
So this is my story and this is my song
I’m praising my risen King and Savior all the day long
    .
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
    He will never fail
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
    He will never fail…

Please pray for me as this morning I am having a CT scan of my abdomen, I’m a little nervous about having dye injected into me.

@Linda K – hope all went well with your surgery. Feel better soon!
@Adrienne – praise the Lord that your mom is no longer hallucinating and that it was as simple as stopping the medication. Also, prayers for your MIL – how odd is that to have both suffering with the same thing!

Happy Thursday She’s – you are loved. ❤️

    7. Indiana Elaine says:

SJG, so sorry to hear of your church situation. I, too, watched our church slowly dwindle. We ended up, with 25. We are a strong united 25. The Bible says all is needed is two or three. True, programs dwindle and requires much regrouping. When praise and worship leaders are not available, there is always the option of using praise songs from the internet or online if you have that capability. Poor Jeff must be in overload. You have just a gift of finding songs that fit the theme. Maybe that is your gift to offer. Much prayers for your CT scan. Pray all is well.

Amen Tina (and Erin) for this reminder to bring all our praise to the Lord today and every day! HE alone is worthy!!!

Please pray for my family. My brother-in-law (my only sister’s hubby) passed away suddenly Monday. My sister has corticobasal degeneration which presents symptoms similar to dementia and Parkinson’s. She is unable to live by herself and really shouldn’t be left to stay by herself. My niece has so many decisions to make and is overwhelmed. I am leaving work at lunchtime today to drive to Georgia for the memorial service and will stay with my sister for a couple of days. Thank you for your faithful prayers! I’m praying for each of you! ❤️

    1. Searching says:

Oh, Lynne! Praying for you, your niece and your sister in the grieving, and for safe travels. Praying especially for your niece, that the Lord will give her clarity in the decisions that need to be made. ❤️

    2. Kelly (NEO) says:

I am so sorry for your sudden loss. I am especially praying for your niece. Oh do I know what she is facing, but thankfully I had my brother to help me. I still do not know what we would have done without my aunt being the steady that we needed. There were times just her nearness was exactly what I needed. Know that you are important and praying for you as well.

This morning, I chose to do my devotional in bed! For SRT, I like to write on paper my thoughts first.. that notepad was downstairs, so I found a notebook by the bed, picked a pen from the pot alongside, and open the notebook..
    .
I was met with the words ..
    .
Up from the ashes, Hope will arise, death is defeated… THE KING IS ALIVE!
I raise a Hallelujah in the presence of my enemy, my weapon is a melody.
I’m gonna sing in the middle of the storm, louder and louder, you are going to hear my praises roar…
    .
Well if that is not a God moment, I don’t know what is..
    .
    .
The woes of this world can sometimes sound loud, yet a mustard seed of rememberance of what God has done in our lives and actually continues to do, can often start a small orchestra of praise to the One who IS to be praised, worshipped and glorified.
I may not like the beat of drums, but I’ll tell you what, the beat of my praising heart, alongside a drum, soon reminds me to raise my voice in rejoicing, for God and God alone can bring restoration, reimagining, remaking, redefining, resolution, reawakening, redemption.
    .
With whatever I have today, be it a cymbal, a lyre, a harp, my voice, may my sound of praise be heard far and wide..
    .
    Raising a Hallelujah..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
    AMEN…
    .
Good morning, my dears. Singing Hallelujahs over you, as i give thanks to God for you..
    Much love..
    Tina..♥️

“The woes of this world can sometimes sound loud, yet a mustard seed of rememberance of what God has done in our lives and actually continues to do, can often start a small orchestra of praise to the One who IS to be praised, worshipped and glorified!” This is so true Tina! You put to words some thing I experienced just recently in recounting all the trials we have had with our daughter AND all the ways God has seen us through! I left the conversation feeling so encouraged and grateful for how God is working and continues to work.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, agree, so beautiful dear Tina!
As I was reading the devotional I thought…Oh Tina’s toes are going to start tapping…

    5. Cee Gee says:

Quite the God moment for sure!
“..the beat of my praising heart, alongside a drum, soon reminds me to raise my voice in rejoicing, for God and God alone can bring restoration, reimagining, remaking, redefining, resolution, reawakening, redemption.” So beautifully expressed! By the way, I happen to love drums enough for the two of us so no worries, sister! ☺☺☺
Tina, that song has such a special meaning for me! It was playing on the radio moments after we learned a brand new friend had suddenly left this earth to be with Jesus. I sang as tears of joy poured from my eyes – joy for the impact he had on our lives in the brief time we had known him and joy for him being with his Savior. I relive that moment every time I hear the song. Thank you! ❤
