A legacy of faith is a legacy worth leaving behind. Back in the fall, we hosted our first “Legacy Dinner” for young adults. The heart behind these dinners is to create a space for young adults to hear stories from people who have gone before them and are keeping their faith. When I consider the people in my life who were and are faithful people, they are the people that I want others to know—people whose faith keeps them grounded amidst many unknowns, challenges, and unforeseen trials. Faithful people who have resolved to live for God and his glory. This was and is Daniel’s story.
Daniel was a faithful man living in a foreign land.
Let’s discuss Daniel’s resolve to “not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8). In the Near East, exile was expected, and one of the primary objectives of exile was “identity theft.” And I am not talking about social security. When Babylon besieged Jerusalem and the southern kingdom of Judah was sent into exile, it was an all-out war on their identity as a people—“If we can get them to eat like us, look like us, and act like us, then they will forget their God and forget where they come from.” But Daniel and his friends avoided the luxurious diet of the king’s table to protect themselves from being ensnared by the temptations of the Babylonian culture. They used their distinctive diet to retain their unique identity as Jewish exiles and avoid complete assimilation into Babylonian culture. When foreign food was presented to them, they were determined to remember that it was not the food they depended on—it was God. It wasn’t about food per se but about being faithful.
Daniel had distinguished himself because of his extraordinary spirit.
Daniel had distinguished himself as being faithful to his God, and “he had an extraordinary spirit” (Daniel 6:3). What did it mean that he had an “extraordinary spirit?” This could mean that he was a man of high character and that God was empowering and guiding him in the work that he was being asked to do. This spirit enabled Daniel to do things that the magicians, sorcerers, and wise men of Babylon of that day could not do. The things that the king of Babylon was asking of them were too difficult (Daniel 2:11). As one of my favorite artists, Ben Rector, famously wrote, “You won’t believe it, and strange as it sounds, extraordinary magic follows you around.” Daniel’s life displayed God’s glory and power, leaving people with a noticeable impression that they couldn’t quite explain. It followed Daniel around as he remained faithful.
Faithful people have resolved to live for God and his glory. Considering Daniel’s life and yours, where do you find yourself in the story? What does living for God and his glory mean for you right now?

Being in constant reading and learning more about God’s word shows that I am becoming closer to god. ❤️
♥️
I do wish the reading had continued a bit further, admittedly because I like to see the justice inflicted on the men who framed Daniel. But even better is the king’s proclamation throughout his kingdom that:
26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. “For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end.” (Daniel 6:26 NIV) Truth was proclaimed throughout the whole kingdom because of Daniel’s obedience. What a legacy!
I wanted to reply to Mercy, but my first reply to her comment was supposed to be a personal post. So… read that reply and chuckle and ponder…
❤️
When reading Daniel’s story, there are many things that the Bible skims through, especially psychological transitions. I particularly am very curious. The Bible did not describe how they felt going through all these circumstances. Beyond hard. UNTIL we ourselves are found in the same situation, modern day society whatever it might be, we will know why these are heroes. I faced lions once, with a thick glass between us in the zoo (lol), and the lions were huge. His face was huge. I stood close and trembled. How did David and Daniel do it? The courage of these people is on another level. I admire people with such courage. They still exist today. Their ability to stand against the face of unspoken pressure, the wicked afflictions sent by the roaring lion (satan), seeking whom they can devour. They dare to come close to lions, praying and knowing God had shut the lion mouths once, He can do it again. Goliath no longer appears intimidating after a lion encounter. I don’t know how. But God is the One who takes his people from glory to glory, first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn, trusted in little, then trusted in much, steward well and be faithful in little, chances to be tested if can be faithful with much, endure well the small pressure, might be found in bigger tension. The Lord builds each warrior for their unique tasks and battles. Also, the Spirit of Excellence stood out to me. I was reminded of this quote once more, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”. So to each of us, let us ask God for the Spirit of Excellence in the areas of our stewardship. If we pray, let us pray well. If we read the Word, let us read well. If we raise children, let us care for them well. If we love God, let us love Him well. No easy tasks, though they sound simple. Some day fighting distractions can take all the energy I got. May we know from Daniel’s true story that God can shut the mouth of the roaring lion- the accuser of the brethren, who works hard and cunningly through the sons of the evil (1 John 3:10: In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother). The devil’s children are more on this earth. Sadly. Only God’s children walks the narrow road, in smaller crowd, only a few can find it. So yes, we seem to be outnumbered, but, remember, He who is in us is stronger he who is in the world! Lord help us. Praying for our shes suffering pain to the point of tears ( i am so sorry) Praying with you MICHELLE P (not all who says Lord Lord is His children, but those who practices righteousness, …. now the works of the flesh are manifest: which are strife, envying, enmity, DIVISIONS,…I warn you as I warned you before- says Paul to Michelle in Galatians 5:19-21). Be blessed dear sisters. Hugs and love to you all.
When we hosted some kids from Malawi, Africa, we took them to the zoo. When we viewed the lions, they were confused by the thick glass that separated us from the lions. They did not know there was glass at first. I’m sure they were thinking, “Silly white people… those are LIONS!” Just a story to make you chuckle.
.
But seriously…
.
Do I live my life like Daniel? Something to ponder…
I was glad for that thick glass!!
What does it mean to me? Trust. Trust was the first word that came to mind. As I sit here at one of the local Coffee shops, owned by Christian, sitting outside, having a quiet time my daughter and I. (Her idea to come here early 6:50 AM) and knowing that I can be out here, enjoy the coolness of the morning reading HIS WORD, sharing with my daughter as she shares what she’s reading as well, and that I can do this, this summer because my God provided for me. Also, as I mentioned, she was baptized yesterday, she is 19 years old, and my friends and I had been praying for her for a few years to make that decision. Thank you all for praying for her and all the beautiful comments. She was a little vulnerable in her testimony, but I know it spoke too many who were present. God is good! Prayers are appreciated as I have a phone appointment this morning.
Prayers for favor with the phone appt., Mari!
Vulnerable = sincerity in my opinion ❤ Very proud of Alyssa!
Praying for your phone appointment, and the faith journey for Alyssa. So precious.
Mari V your appointment is long past but Ive prayed for it and for your daughter ! Praise God for her baptism!
My purpose right now is serving my family and friends and praying. I cannot work due to trying(for a few years and many appeals now) for disability for Lupus and Seizures. I am only just now 40. Sometimes I feel like I have no purpose and it hurts. I pray to our God to remind me of my worth and to continue to remind me I have a purpose He already had planned before I was conceived and born May 27, 1985. Before I was diagnosed with Lupus, before my first seizure. Before I was told to stop working, even though it was from home. A wonderful book to read and a deeper study on Daniel is by Ann Graham Lotz. Called The Daniel Prayer.
Oh sweet sister Jamie – God has a purpose and a plan for you. As discouraging as your life might seem, you are worth much to God. I can imagine that it can be so difficult to live with Lupus, but don’t lose hope – God loves you, He sees, He knows, He hears. Praying for you this morning. ❤️
Agreeing! ❤
Jamie, may I recommend a book? Desperate for Hope by Vaneetha Risner. It is an excellent study for those of us walking the path of chronic illness.
So funny I have been searching endlessly for the next study for my Chronic pain group at church, and finally went with the book I noted above just this morning!! BUT–this I am going to mark to do!!! Thank you so much Susan!
It is a fantastic study. The church I attend has a chronic illness group. We went through this study a year ago. We are planning to go through it again beginning this fall as we have many new members.
We’re almost done with the study as a community, but I definitely recommend going back and doing most of the people in this book. We will be doing people in the New Testament in July.
Oh Jamie, I have witnessed the debilitating affect that Lupus can have on your body through a cousin. My prayers are with you. I also love Anne Graham Lotz. We are studying one of her books now, “Jesus in Me” in our Bible study.
Praying dear Jamie
Perhaps you could start a Chronic Pain group at church like we did! It has been amazing because you are with people that know what it feels like. We encourage each other and pray for each other. I have a book called “When Chronic Pain and Illness Take Away Everything” by Esther Smith. She really says what most of us feel like but then looking to God to lean into. We sure need each other or we will isolate and despair. It easily can turn to debilitating depression. Praying for you!
(I had thought about doing an online group for us She’s with Chronic Pain, maybe someone would get that going?!) I do not have your name listed and will add it for prayers!
Jamie I am praying for you
I love Daniel’s story, which begs me to answer the questions put to us by Will Heydel.
.
Where do I find myself in Daniel’s story?
.
What does living for God and His glory mean for you right now?
…
The first question leaves me with so many more!
1)Would I reject the kings luscious food & drink, or would I let my eyes & belly get the best of me?
2)Would I have the boldness to ask this favor, or would I be to afraid to ask?
3)Would I fearlessly continue my routine of prayer in front of my open window, three times a day as I had always done, or would I go to my “closet” and pray secretly?
3)Would I have gone willingly to the lions den, or would I have pleaded for my life?
—
I am so amazed at Daniel’s faith at such a young age. He was just a young man – somewhere around the age of 17/18. His faith never wavered, he trusted in the God that wisdom and power belong to, the living God who endures forever!
—
I hope that if ever placed in circumstances that would cause me to choose faith over fear – that I would always choose faith.
—
Back in October Jeff & I went to Sight & Sound in Lancaster, PA and saw the production “Daniel” – it was fantastic, if you get an opportunity to see it – take it. It is Daniel’s story come to life!
—
Have a super blessed day my dear sisters!…Today I turn 68. There was a time that age would depress me, but now – I thank God for every new day He gives me. Every birthday that comes, is one more year to celebrate the life God has given me!!
Happy Birthday to you! Blessings on your day and your year ahead!
I wonder too, if I would be able to resist the Kings food? I think I would be tempted :/
Happy Happy Birthday our dear Sharon!! A BEAUTIFUL 68!!
Thank you for the questions, I honestly didn’t think about them closely, which when I do—oomph. Yeah, Lord help us stay faith over fear.
The Danielle production sounds amazing!
Happy birthday Sharon. May God bless you today and everyday! What ever happened with your son’s apartment? Was he able to sublet it? We are in the process of looking for an apt in NYC – just thinking that we should talk. Maybe we could help each other out:)
Sharon! Danielle B and I are both from the Lancaster PA area! It is a beautiful place to live… and Sight and Sound is an amazing stage! Daniel was well done, for sure!
Sometimes that sacrifice tells it all.
Living for God and His glory for me means to love the difficult people. Be humble and kind even when others are not. And do not compromise the ways of the Lord.
Thank you all so much for your prayers. We made it safely to TX and through a few of the hard “firsts.” Our 2nd grandchild/1st granddaughter was born on Thurs and the last text my FIL sent was to our son, expressing congratulations for baby Jane’s arrival. Life and death. Quite a week. Grateful for the Lord who holds it all.
Oh, Rachel, what a special treasure- the “last text” and precious baby! ❤
Posting from the Outer Banks on my annual vacation with my best friends family. Lifting up all the prayer requests, especially our She’s who are in pain. If you can please continue to pray for my dad and His upcoming surgery, I would greatly appreciate it ❤️ I choose to cling to my faith in all the uncertainties and trials of life. Our God is a God of rescue! May we each feel His presence today
Amen, Taylor! Enjoy this special time! You are closer to my neck of the woods! ☺❤
Have a wonderful time at the Outer Banks! …praying for your dad’s upcoming surgery.❤️
Again I see similarities to Joseph and also I am reminded of the command given to the remnant in Jeremiah to marry, multiply, plant gardens – in other words live in the land but not by the customs of the land.
.
This may be the most enlightening and God honoring studies I have ever done.
Thank you SRT and writers for faithfully feeding us from the Word each day!!!!

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you go through deep waters,
I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.

Cee Gee, that scripture had been very near and dear to my heart.
❤ I have seen it repeatedly in the past couple of weeks!
Prayers for feeling better, sister! ❤
I agree Cee Gee! This study has been so rich! It is making me listen to teachings about the people we are learning about.
❤ Great idea!
Thank you for sharing this Cee Gee
The question posed at the end of the devotional really got me thinking! I find myself in an in between season. There are times when I feel I’m walking in God’s purpose for my life and other times when I feel so “behind”. I think living for God & His glory right now means that I continue to use the servant’s heart He’s given me to be a blessing to my nanny family & help steward the girl’s faith. It also includes surrendering to God when I feel burnt out which is happening more frequently lately. (For some context, the Dad I nanny for retired from playing in the MLB this year & has been struggling with retirement. I’m with Amanda, Jake, and their two daughters from February to October living with them away from home and essentially “on duty” 24/7. I love these girls like they are my own, but the emotional toll of Jake’s Dad battling cancer & subsequently caring for the girls by myself majority of the time can really wear me down emotionally and spiritually.) Sorry for the long post! I love what I do, truly, but I felt it tied into our devo/study today!
Susan Burley I am praying for God to strengthen you.
Thank you! I appreciate that so much!
At some point we all have to refuse the king’s food if our allegiance is to G-d.
I was reading an interesting commentary where Daniel by refusing to eat the food from the king’s table was cultivating the ability to say” no to ungodliness.”
Colin Smith and Tim Agustyn said, “If you don’t have the ability to say no on smaller issues, you won’t have the ability to say no when larger tests and temptations come.”
Daniel was prepared when the bigger issues came. I sure the king had the best chefs and that chocolate cake with the chocolate ganache was delicious and the pork roast with the pork tacos! He had never had tacos al pastor. However, Jewish boys who belonged to G-d did not eat unkosher food.
Smith and Agustyn ask, “What films
should we watch? What parties should we go to? What company should we keep? Daniel’s example reminds us that as we make these decision, we need to consider the long -term potential for being sucked into the values and lifestyle of the world.”
Daniel had never heard the verse about denying oneself and following Christ. However, I think his life was an example of what it meant.
Daniel’s life could not have been easy. Taken from home and family, he remained faithful to God. Yet in reading his story I often don’t take into account the years that separate the elements of his story. He remained faithful toGod, every day, in learning a new language, in serving a king and kingdom that were not his own, never losing sight of his true King. May I live as faithfully as Daniel, every day. Help me, Lord, to stay faithful to complete what is required of me, but with my focus continually on You. May I bring you honor in my every day.
I love the breakdown stages you brought up. Powerful stages. Thank you Susan. Sometimes we find ourselves in these seemingly micro stages (that the Bible doesn’t elaborate on), but very big for our human perspectives. But through God’s perspective, the Bible describes our lives are like a vapor, so short, hence the details seem to be squished together (for me at least) :)
Indiana Elaine, I am right there with you. Spent from about 3:30 to 6 crying in pain. I’m frustrated because the pain doctor doesn’t seem to be responding. As with you, the pain just gets worse and my legs are getting weaker. I can’t care for my sweet hubby properly if I can’t take of myself. If you sweet ladies who up early East coast would remember us in prayer it would be gratefully appreciated. Those early mornings are really rough. Seems like the only post I make are for prayers. I am on doing the devotional with you. Prayers and love for all of you.
LINDA IN NC, I hate that you are having such a hard time! If I weren’t 2 hours away I would be there to help. I am committed to praying for you! Love you, sister! ❤❤❤
I agree, that’s what I wanted to say to Elaine…I would come if I lived closer. But…we can pray, and that is powerful! Holding you dear sisters up! Sciatica is debilitating. I pray you both are able to get a clinic that helps rather than masks. Hugs. Hold Fast! Praying for Healing from the Healer!
Praying for people who are suffering from chronic pain today. I am saying your name to God that He would bring relief through the stripes of Jesus or medical intervention.
I am listening to “I Know A Name” and it’s lyrics…Every time I call your name…chains break! We know the name, Hallelujah! Keep crying out to Him! Victory is there!! That is our first and best route! Lamenting, hoping, knowing…He is great AND good!!
❤ amen, Rhonda!
Praying for people who are suffering from chronic pain today. I am saying your name to God that He would bring relief through the stripes of Jesus or medical intervention.
Praying for you Linda! May God grant you relief and get you answers from the doctor soon!
Linda I am so sorry for your pain and that the pain Dr. is not helping. I pray for you often and will continue. I will make it a point to pray for you in those early mornings when it’s the hardest. I wish I could be there to help! You are loved, you are prayed for. ❤️
Oh Linda, I feel your pain. It is a pain that you can’t get away from. I can’t imagine being in so much pain and have to care for someone else. Mornings are the absolute worst. My prayers are with you and thank you all for your prayers. I decided to go to the walk-in orthopedic clinic today and stay until I got answers. I could barely walk. My prayer on the way in was please Lord let them hear me. Would you believe I have an appointment with a spinal surgeon this afternoon. Woohoo and thank you Jesus. Plus they did not charge me for the visit this morning. I shall keep you posted. My insurance still may not approve additional care until I finish physical therapy.
Praying for your pain to lessen Elaine, Linda, Rhonda and others suffering.
Oh good! Thank you Lord!! What a praise!
“Daniel’s life displayed God’s glory and power….”
Daniel’s courage, unwavering commitment to the Lord, discipline and example are just so inspiring and admirable. He would have been very aware and well informed of the edicts and laws put in place, but none of them was at all worthy of compromising his steadfast commitment and quietly, faithful honoring God. He sought the Lord on his hands and knees for wisdom, insights, guidance and protection. My hearts desire is to seek the Lord’s wisdom, to be faithfully steadfast no matter may come to live boldly that “the God I faithfully serve, will rescue”. May He find me faithful.
Well said, sister! ❤
❤️
GM She’s!
I love the story of Daniel, holding steadfast, not being conformed into the culture around him! We know how hard that is ourselves. For our culture is no longer mostly Christian, it has gone so far the other direction it is hardly recognizable from the 70’s and 80’s. How did we get here? It seems as if Satan has won often days. But yet God’s people, the remnant has woken in the last decade! We have stood against culture that is trying to use nice words to make us thing different.
It is hard, and we can stand out like a sore thumb. But Jesus himself said the world would hate us for his name! That gives us blessed assurance we are on the right side, His side.
It is imperative to stay in the word and know it, live it, shine it. We can’t go with feelings and emotions. My preacher said yesterday these powerful words- Comfortable is the worst place for a Christian to be!
As Christ-followers we will always be found in resistance. Fighting back against culture. In Acts 4 God gives the Holy Spirit to embolden the disciples! To give them courage to do the work in front of them. The church begins. To speak, go, and be fire! This is the only way. Danielle had the Spirit of his God. We must have our vegetables, our daily bread, our nutrients- the word of God. Love Him with all our hearts, souls, and mind.
Keep his words on our lips!
May I be a Danielle, and his brave friends! God will fight our battles when we fight in action with him!
Yes. Amen.
❤
“Comfortable is the worst place for a Christian to be!” -amen.

A prayer: Daniel’s footsteps
In lion’s den or foreign land,
Still, Lord, I trust Your guiding hand.
When pressure comes and fear draws near,
Remind my heart that You are here.
When truth is hard and cost is high,
Give me the strength to still stand by.
Help me be faithful, brave, and true,
Just as Your servant Daniel knew.
Though I can’t always see Your plans,
You’re working still with loving hands.
In every trial, unseen, You move—
Your faithfulness my life will prove.
So make me bold in quiet ways,
To walk with You through all my days.
You’re not just God of ancient days—
You’re here, right now, and still you raise.
Dare to be a Daniel
Amen❤️

I want to remain faithful despite what I am facing, despite anything. I want to do everything in excellence, with Jesus’ love and an extraordinary spirit. Daniel is an excellent example of how we must live for God, no matter what or where we are. We are exiles living in a foreign land – this world is not our home – and we need to be the light everywhere we go!
Yes!❤️
We’re just a passin’thru
❤
Daniel’s strong faith is front and center in today’s passages, determined and unwavering. May ours be as well.
.
We see the evilness of kingdom governors & subordinates, and pridefulness/shortsightedness/weakness of Darius to fall for their plan. The God-given wisdom and knowledge Daniel had set him apart and above the other governors, so why didn’t Darius question why Daniel was not part of this group pushing him to act? Darius quickly realized his mistake (“was greatly displeased with himself”) but did not undo his action (as even a law he made in this situation was treated/considered unchangeable in their culture).
Neither can we undo many things – be cautious and consider consequences of our actions. Are we seeking and following God’s will? Are our actions honoring Him? Are we letting pride interfere with our faith?
God protected Daniel and used Darius’s actions for His glory. Darius acknowledged Daniel’s faith “Daniel, servant of the living God, whom you serve continually” and the presence of God in Daniel’s life – contrary to the the Chaldeans saying in 2:11 “… except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”
We have Him living in our lives, in us, as Jesus spoke in
John 14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Hallelujah! (whoop worthy, Kelly ❤️)

Like Pilot, King Darius realized the man before him was innocent “and made every effort until sundown to deliver him.” Yet hecarried out the will of Daniel’s accusers because of political pressure. He sealed the stone that was rolled over the mouth off the “tomb” of lions. Then he “went to his palace and spent the night fasting.”
.
Like the women who were Jesus followers, “At the first light of dawn the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den.” Daniel came forth from the “grave” unharmed.
.
One day those who falsely accused Jesus will be judged and thrown into the “pit” with the devil.
.
INDIANA ELAINE – so sorry to hear of your suffering getting worse. Praying the Lord will bring relief to you and wisdom to your doctor today.

RACHEL – praying for you and your family as you mourn the loss of your FIL.

I shouted at my 23year old grandson this weekend! He kept saying things I didn’t like and they were not nice things.. to me!
I do try to be faithful to God, it doesn’t always happen as it should but my prayer and waking thought is to be God-like to all I meet or encounter.
.
We used to have interns at the Church I work at. One day they were learning about hearing from God and words of encouragement for the people they were praying for..
I was a willing ‘guinea pig’!
.
I had some beautiful words spoken over me, but the ones I have remembered more often than not, are these words..
“..As you walked in, I saw light all around you, each step you took left a light in your footprint in the carpet..
That is deep!
.
Lord, I pray I can still be that person for you.. to shine for you, to bear the fruit of goodness and grace and mercy, but most of all to be faithful to you in all I do, am and are..
Lord, may I always follow your truth, no matter what may come..
.
To you Lord God be the glory and honour.. always..
.
BUT GOD..
.
AMEN.

.
Blessed Monday, my people.. covered in much love, hugs and prayers.. always.❤️

Still chasing that tail!❤️
❤️
Those words of encouragement, beautiful!
Praying your grandson will rethink his words (sounds like you already have ❤️) and there will be peace between the two of you. How many times have I not been God-like in those I encounter? Thank you for the reminder to be aware, sister. ❤️❤️
Praying for you in the chasing
