Christmas Day: The Savior Is Born

Open Your Bible

Luke 2:1-20, Galatians 4:4-7

I spent weeks researching the perfect bag. I know. So dumb. The thing is, I had long talks with my bestie, ChatGPT, about this bag. I wanted something stylish enough that it didn’t scream “diaper bag” but big enough to haul, well, diapers, wipes, snacks, sippy cups, etc. I wanted something that said “cool girl” more than it said “spit-up cleaner.” After scrolling, searching, and reading reviews, I finally ordered THE one. For some reason, the bag I wanted in the color I needed was discontinued, so I went on a hunt and I finally found someone selling this particular bag in this pristine color with the tags still on! Then came the real waiting…refreshing the tracking page, watching it creep from “Processing” to “Shipped” to “Out for Delivery.” What a great use of my time and energy.

I’m not shocked to report that like anything else in this world, the cool-adjacent non-mommish bag couldn’t deliver the thrill I was seeking. When it comes to bags, it’s only a matter of minutes before Cheerios are spilled, sippy cups leak, and the shiny, new bag becomes just like every other mom-tote I’ve owned. My long-awaited package was delivered, but it couldn’t really deliver. It couldn’t live up to my expectations.

And that’s the thing about waiting in this world. It usually ends in a letdown. The thing we long for comes, but it disappoints or breaks or doesn’t last.

At Christmas, kids wait for presents. They count down the days, staring at shiny boxes. We adults wait, too, for different things. We wait for answers to prayers, for clarity about the future, for healing in our homes or our bodies.

Waiting is a part of life. And waiting is hard.

God’s people in the Old Testament knew this deeply. They waited for centuries for the Messiah. They heard the promises, they longed for the rescuer, and they passed the hope down through generations.

Sometimes it must have felt like God had gone silent. Like the waiting wasn’t working. But Galatians 4:4–7 says, “When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then God has made you an heir.”

At just the right time, the waiting ended. The package arrived. It didn’t disappoint.

The angels proclaimed it in Luke 2:11, “Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” The Savior had come. Hope was here. Not too soon. Not too late. Right on time.

Jesus really showed up. And He is not a letdown. He is more than anyone could imagine or expect. He is the rescuer who redeems, the King who reigns, the friend who never leaves.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. I don’t know if it is better than a bag. But I do know THE gift has already been given.

The Savior has come, and He is more than enough.

Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
—Luke 2:11

I fully appreciate that when the shininess of being an adult wears off, with all the freedom to make our own choices we can feel lost in this big world and especially the maddness of Christmas. It bothers me less and less. Being a child of God anchors me and the wait doesnt even seem that bad. Out of all the presents i get, I pray for God to give me a word to focus on each year, i have had ‘gifts’, ‘community’ and ‘purpose’ in previous years
and now get excited about what God wants me to lean in to in 2026. And excited about my daily prayer time and the peace my Lord brings in the chaos. Amen

I could so relate to your shopping for the perfect bag. For days I have shopped online for a specific red sweater for the holidays. I did finally find it, but in the process incurred an extra postage charge. I had it sent to the address I am visiting, but now it will probably arrive after I leave. So, my urgency to get something I needed so badly will now result in a longer wait. And I got through the holidays just fine with the red top already in my closet. Jesus was the perfect gift, but not recognized nor appreciated by people then, and often not by me now. I search and try to make happen the solution for my problems that I want, when Jesus has already given the solution if I will look to him and be content in His answers.

My very favorite Christmas hymn as a child was
“What Child Is This”. “Mary Did You Know” has always reminded of that song; I guess that’s why it’s my favorite contemporary Christmss song!
These lyrics came from Hymnary but there is a 4th verse from another site below:

What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
    On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
    While shepherds watch are keeping?

    Chorus:
This, this is Christ, the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!
2 Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here
    The silent Word is pleading.[Chorus]
3 So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king to own Him.
    The King of kings salvation brings;
    Let loving hearts enthrone Him.[Chorus]
    Baptist Hymnal, (2008)

And this 4th verse was on another link:
4)Raise, raise the song on high
    The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The babe, the Son of Mary

Blessed Christmas to all! I have a major unspoken praise today! Just had to share even without detail!

  37. Caroline Bridges says:

The pastor last night was saying that they thought The Lord was going to give them a reservation at a Marriott or Holiday Inn Express, but there was nothing. Not even a reservation with their names on it. They have this tradition on Christmas Eve in every service where someone will “deliver” a dominoes pizza in the middle of worship and they get a giant tip + the pizza is actually for them and their family to enjoy and the rest of the night is theirs to enjoy. This year they got over 7’000 dollars at the service I attended.

  39. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

“But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son…”
    .
God had an appointed time to send His Son. He had a plan, He had a purpose.
    .
Even though at times I don’t think so – God’s timing is always perfect and He does have a plan. To remember this, to ponder this, will help in the waiting.
    .
The people waited for a Messiah – and He came.
We wait for the Messiah – and He will come, when the set time has fully come.
    .
Praise God He always keeps His promises!!

@Martha Hix – praise God for safe travels!
@Wendy B. – praise God for the good report, and so soon!!
@all She’s – thank you for the prayers for those I named.

Merry Christmas my dear She’s, and Merry Christmas to all the SRT Staff! ❤️

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen! The waiting is so hard..But all in his perfect timing.

The people and groups I work with sometimes is hard…these are real sufferings (as opposed to the wait on a diaper bag!). The chronic pain that makes it difficult to function, the painful grief of crippling disease or loss of children, the trap of addictions, broken and homeless. And then those in jail or prison paying for a wrong choice. And us, that long for children, marriage, or restoration of a bad marriage or estranged children. Oh the hard of life can break us—-
      But GOD
The answer to every hard, crippling problem, ailment, condition we could have-

      JESUS

It’s so profound, and when you have Jesus in a real, in your heart everyday not only on Sunday, you can get through. Even if day by day, hour by hour…He gives us His strength! The baby in a manager, the Savior of the World!! The Light of the World!! Finally–The weary world Rejoices!!

I talk about it often…if we set our hope on one thing…release, healing, a child, a marriage…retirement- there is still something else lurking to take us down! But with God—we put our hope in him alone! That’s how Paul could make it through…happily…because through every trial and situation, he had The KNOWLEDGE and the very Holy Spirit in Him. And knew what it was all about! The more I am in the word, and serve, and worship and pray…The more I “get it!”
Thank Jesus for the manager…thank you for the cross…thank you for the blood!!

Last night, well every night, I had a little singing-praising-praying- session before bed. Last night the line up was…
“You Are Holy” (Isaiah 6) by Richy Clark, “Emmanuel” by Charity Gayle, and “No One Like the Lord” by Bethel (Jen Johnson).

Since this turned into “my comment,” I say a big Merry Christmas to all my She’s!!
The day I started reading my Bible every morning in 2014, then soon discovered SRT, has been so life changing in my walk with the Lord. Reading, studying, and sharing with ya’ll is surely a gift in itself. I love ya’ll like–well, sisters!! One day we will all rejoice in heaven. I still am hopeful SRT will put on a conference some day and we will indeed get to meet!!
Have a beautiful day. It’s just me and my doggy until my husband gets off work at 4. I will listen to music, and go down to the dock and look for manatees, and worship God, and thank him for beautiful, sunny 80 degrees! Oh..and write out our Butterflies prayer requests! Jail time was good yesterday despite their circumstances. They are beautiful ladies drawing closer to the Lord every week. We talked about what I said above…getting out isn’t going to be all they hope, the world will never throw perfection at them, in fact, it will be so challenging it usually throws them back into their old ways. So they should trust God’s perfect timing, like us all, and focus on Him!

      1. Mary says:

Thank you so much for this – so encouraging and grounding and true!

    hope of all the earth thou art;
    dear desire of every nation,
    joy of every longing heart.

    2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
    now thy gracious kingdom bring.
    By thine own eternal spirit
    rule in all our hearts alone;
    by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

  61. Mary says:

I can’t imagine just how much this must have amazed the shepherds. They were just faithfully carrying out their duties; apparently unnoticed and banal, when light broke through the dark night. The message that they received was that the Lord, the Messiah, has been born! I wonder what the glory of the Lord must have looked like when the passage tells us that it ‘shone around them’!

I am utterly amazed at the broader truth that this points to, because in the same way that light appeared to the shepherds at
night, so Jesus, the true light, stepped down into our dark world to bring us light. Even more wonderfully, He then told us He would not leave us as orphans, so the light remains in all who believe in Him. I thank God that the light He has given me shines in the darkness around.

How beautiful as well that God appears to the lowly, and reveals His good news to them first! Then, when they spread the message, people have to listen to them because the news is too wondrous to ignore! Think of how often people are not listened to simply because of their position in society. God uses the foolish things, the weak things, the things that are not, to shame the wise, and Jesus’s birth story is consistent with this!

Oh my Lord, thank you for this Christmas Day. May our hearts be so full with this message. May we just want to overflow and tell all out of love what this day means. This is good news that brings great joy to all peoples – may we believe this and live this out!

And Father, I can’t fully comprehend what it means to be a son. Help me to understand that I might marvel. Help me to treasure up and ponder your truths like Mary.
    In your glorious name,
    Amen

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen Mary! I loved how you put this! (I was a little underwhelmed with the shopping for a diaper bag). You gave me what my heart wanted to hear after the scripture reading!

    4. Cee Gee says:

“Think of how often people are not listened to simply because of their position in society.”
Mary, that tugged at my heart today! Even among family there is dismussal at times for various reasons, especially as we enter the ‘senior status’!
That also remunded me of the ‘oigei. lady’ in the lark in the movie Home Alone. Most of us would have scurried from her presence, but the boy, Kevin, stayed and heard words of comfort and wisdom from her mouth. I haven’t seen that movie in years, but I remember loving that scene. Thank you and Merry Christmas! ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I thought Dismussal was a new cool word at first that Cee Gee knew..then I read on..lol! I just watched Home Alone last night..and it was funny the “old” people in the beginning..! It’s funny how we get to that age where we think are parents are the smartest anymore, that WE ourselves are. It’s not so funny when now our older kids treat us like we did our parents! lol

  62. Kim Harper says:

    Amen!
