Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Open Your Bible

Matthew 5:4, Isaiah 66:12-14, Lamentations 3:55-57, John 11:17-44, John 16:20-22, 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Many of us in the West live in a comfort-centered culture. Whether it’s app-adjusted thermostats, delivery of anything, anytime, or the endless entertainment options always available, we have more comforts than any society before us could fathom.

And yet, we are more uncomfortable than any people or moment in history. Stats say we are lonely, anxious, depressed, and distracted. So what’s wrong with us?

Why can’t we be comforted? Maybe it’s because we’re looking for our consolation in places where it can’t be found. When I’m in a difficult season, I try to drown out my suffering with distractions like a podcast, a show, or a book, and it works; even chocolate takes the edge off—at least for a while. Can you relate? But how long do we feel better…a few minutes or hours perhaps? These distractions temporarily numb the pain, but they don’t help us honestly face our suffering or invite us to carry it to the One who brings true, lasting comfort.

These major truths strike me from these passages: For Christians, suffering is to be expected, and we’re called to mourn it, to lament it—not by ourselves but before the Lord who loves us most. And He, in turn, promises His comfort.

In Isaiah 66, we read about Israel’s darkest days, which God allowed because of their sin. And yet He still promised them His comfort (Isaiah 66:13). Similarly, the author of Lamentations was witnessing Israel’s exile, and he called on God who came near to comfort him (Lamentations 3:57).

In John 16, Jesus was speaking just a day before His death. Though He was suffering, He promised the coming comfort that was available to the disciples—and is available to us—the comfort of His Holy Spirit.

Even as Paul suffered, he praised God “who comforts us in all affliction,” so that we can comfort others who are facing trials with His comfort (2Corinthians 1:3–5). This reminds me that God’s comfort is often not a generally warm feeling but a precise comfort we each need; it strengthens us and gives us hope to strengthen others. And it leads us to rejoice: “You will see, you will rejoice” (Isaiah 66:14). And as Jesus says, “You also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you” (John 16:22).

Our comfort will come through lamenting our suffering to the Lord and asking Him to come near. And by the power of the Spirit, He will. The Spirit will also help us be moved by the powerful love of Jesus, who endured the worst suffering so that we could be with Him. He will comfort us, until the day our eyes see Him face to face.

“He’s the God of all hope!” Thank you, Lord, that you are our ultimate comfort. Thank you that you know what it means to suffer and that you can relate to our physical and emotional wounds. Thank you that by your stripes we are healed! Thank you that joy comes in the morning. Thank you for your promise in the book of John that no one can take away our joy. Thank you for sending the helper, our advocate and comforter, the Holy Spirit! Please tend to every heart and hug each person listed on this thread who is grieving, Lord. Give them strength to keep their faith, to make it one minute at a time, and send physical helpers and encouragers to them. Let them know they’re not alone and that it won’t always feel like this. Help them to feel comforted by You and You alone! Please provide all resources they need. Restore their joy to them. In your Holy name I pray, Amen!

It’s hard to figure out how to grieve… I pray I lean not on my own way but Gods way. The best I can, with what little I feel I have left.

The world’s comforts can only bring temporary numbness to the pain, but they don’t help us honestly face our suffering or invite us to carry it to the One who brings true, lasting comfort.
God’s comfort is a precise comfort we each need; it strengthens us and gives us hope to strengthen others.
What a great message. I remind myself to remember what is most important. The pressures and stress in life means I am trying to hard on my own strength, with my own power. I need to bring all my worries, stress, and sufferings to God. Life is short, you don’t know what tomorrow holds. Live for what matters for eternity. Let go, and let God.

I want to come to Jesus with all of my trials and find comfort in him . I have to remember that trials are a part of life, not something that we can escape .

If you haven’t listened to this week’s SRT podcast, I want to encourage you to do so. Kristi McLelland shares such deep and wonderful Biblical insight and personal perspective on this passage. I want to listen again so I can take notes.

Learning how bring my issues/ trials and find comfort in Jesus! So often we look for external validation to temporarily ease the ache, the pain but we must turn to him as he knows us, our hearts, and he wishes that we, his children, confide in him, in his comfort!

    “Jesus wept.”
The shortest verse in the Bible has the power to bring profound comfort. When I grieve. When I’m hurt. When I’m confused. When everything seems to be going wrong. Jesus wept. Jesus knows every hurt that I can ever feel. That amazes me. Whenever my heart is broken to the point of weeping, I know I’m not alone in the pain. Jesus wept. And He brings comfort.

I am praying for each request as I read them. For some reason, I can only leave one individual reply. When I try to reply to another post, it just brings me back to the top of that post. So, even though I can’t reply, I AM praying, and remembering you all throughout the day.

  17. Chloe says:

What a beautiful passage to reflect on right after Easter. Mourning. He suffered so that we may be able to bring our suffering to Him and be seen and comforted.

  18. Adrienne says:

I posted something specifically for Traci earlier. Even though we were with Traci in real time as she mourned, there are so many sisters here that have lost children. Be held by Him, sweet sisters.

  19. Marina S. says:

Please pray for my husband, as he has a meeting with a recruiter today, for a possible job opportunity. It’s at 3:30 p.m. (California time). Please pray for peace and that the Lord will speak through him, as he has been feeling very discouraged with all the “no’s” he has gotten. Pray that he fully trusts the Lord with all of this. Pray that God will bless him with a great job real soon. I feel so blessed to know I have sisters who can come alongside me and pray with me.

    1. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

I am praying that your husband feels peace and confidence as he meets with the recruiter today. I pray especially that your husband feels God’s love during this stressful hunt for a job. I pray God guides him to the job He is preparing, and I pray for God’s provision for both of you during this time.

  20. Ts Woodruff says:

I love what Rhonda J wrote here: :We are proud and think we got everything under control but until we surrender, TRULY SURRENDER we never be in a beautiful humble relationship with our Lord.” I feel this is where my daughter is at, she never has truly surrendered her life to Christ. I see her anger building, the hate forming. Its turning my beautiful daughter darker each day and it breaks my heart. But today’s message told me my sorrow is felt by God. And I am not alone. There is joy in the morning and God will see me through it. Please pray for my daughter, Danielle that she will surrender her life to Christ.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I’m so sorry Ts. But if it encourages you, I am SO sure my mom felt the same. I was living awful in my 20’s. And yet I grew up in church, but was far from showing Jesus was my Lord. He was just my Savior for when that time came or if I needed him before that. Just today, one of my friends that volunteers said she had an overwhelming feeling of warmth and saw that my mom, who has passed, was very proud of me!!!
Unfortunately it usually takes us going through a really hard time, to finally see we can’t control everything! I know my son does not put Jesus as a priority..and seems to be falling away. But I was encouraged that he attended church on Easter with his girlfriend. I loved that he is the one that intimated it, and took her to our old church that is 45 min from where they live.
We need to add your daughter to our prodigal list that Tami posts every Monday and is also on our FB Private SRT SHE’S page. Anyone is welcome to join us there, but you need to answer the question about this study.

    2. Tina says:

I will be praying for Danielle❤️

  21. Adrienne says:

TRACI GENDRON… I thought of you when I read the Isaiah passage and then the John 11 passage and then the John 16 passage… AND THEN the passage from Corinthians! This was likely tough reading for you. You are in my prayers this reading day especially.
    .
Whether you are mourning or poor in spirit, as many mentioned yesterday… let Him comfort you (me!) abundantly! He can! He is always with you (me)! ❤️
    .
MARI V… your court date is on my calendar. What time is your appearance?

    1. Traci Gendron says:

Thank you Adrienne. The readings definitely hit home. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

  22. Mari V says:

“He comforts us in our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2Cor1:4) THIS the very reason that I say to myself that its okay I went through hard times. The same comfort I have received when I was SO scared and of the unknown, NOW I am able to tell others especially women who are facing similar story as mine, that they are going to be okay…. JESUS will give them strength even when we feel we can’t, HE will be their (my) strength. It’s my JESUS’ footprints on the sand. MY JESUS gets ALL the glory!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, I love that when I do altar call at church, He always brings people to me that I can relate to and have suffered in the same way.

      1. Cee Gee says:

  23. Wendy B says:

From the ESV Study Bible: Matt 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. The spiritual, emotional or financial loss resulting from sin should lead to mourning and a longing for God’s forgiveness and healing.

With having just moved through Lent and Easter it is still forefront in my mind that so often the weight of my sin does not stop me in my tracks as it should. I dismiss is so easily, overlook it, diminish the separation it causes between me and the Lord and those around me that are affected. As Jesus speaks to the crowds in Matt 5, He is giving instruction of how we can be blessed. In context, this is defined as:(also from ESV study Bible) More than a temporary or circumstancial feeling of happiness, this is a state of well-being in relationship to God as we respond to His ministry.
We need to recognize and acknowledge our need for Jesus and he will meet us at every turn not only for forgiveness but His presence in our lives meets us in ways that will bring us great comfort in times of deep sorrow and pain. Walking with Him, relying on Him to be our guide, strength and hope not only points us to wise living, directs us away from sin, and leads us well, but also draws us near to His heart, His presence, His hope, His loving care, kindness and comfort in our most difficult, heart breaking times. Thank you Heavenly Father that you offer us such a great hope for our lost souls and our hurting hearts and that by Holy Spirit your presence is with us. Amen

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Amen. ❤

    2. Tina says:

      Amen, Wendy. ❤️

  24. Tami Cutler says:

“ Our comfort will come through lamenting our suffering to the Lord and asking Him to come near. And by the power of the Spirit, He will.” Amen! Like Rhonda said, it is in surrendering that we find real relationship with God. I am learning to “lament” and be “real” with God. This song really ministered to me when I was in a dark place. I would listen to it, cry and imagine being held by the Lord. “Just be Held” by Casting Crowns.

    Hold it all together
    Everybody needs you strong
But life hits you out of nowhere
And barely leaves you holding on

And when you’re tired of fighting
    Chained by your control
    There’s freedom in surrender
Lay it down and let it go

So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away
You’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your world’s not falling apart, it’s falling into place
I’m on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held

If your eyes are on the storm
You’ll wonder if I love you still
But if your eyes are on the cross
You’ll know I always have and I always will

And not a tear is wasted
    In time, you’ll understand
I’m painting beauty with the ashes
Your life is in My hands

Lift your hands, lift your eyes
In the storm is where you’ll find Me
And where you are, I’ll hold your heart
    I’ll hold your heart
Come to Me, find your rest
In the arms of the God who won’t let go

I can’t reply to individuals but know that I am praying for your requests and for our prodigals!

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Love that song, too! ❤

  26. Traci Gendron says:

Oh this days study is for me. My son was diagnosed when I was 27-28. I was so young. It was what brought me back to God. I found comfort in Him that I could only find with Him. No therapy, food, activity, or whatever else people turn to was going to do it. I was full of grief. I made some mistakes during that time. Seeking to rid myself of those heavy feelings. It wasn’t working only making me feel worse.
    .
Then I found God in a totally different way than how I knew Him growing up. I actually developed a relationship with Him. I learned how to study His word. I found comfort beyond my wildest dreams.
    .
I cannot remember the exact verse, but it mentions that we suffer as Christ suffered. It made me realize that I wasn’t singled out. Although it can feel like that when you have such a heavy burden put in your life. I had acceptance over my situation. I found peace as much as I possibly could with the knowledge that I would outlive my son.
    .
I could have never gotten through all the medical emergencies. Surgeries. Loads of medicines without God walking along side me.
    .
Turn to Him. I promise you that He will bring you strength you never thought you were possible of. Courage to face your trials. Perseverance to keep going. Comfort as no one else can provide. He is our beautiful loving Father that loves us beyond words.

    1. Tricia C says:

I remember that season for you. But God…He is a strong tower. So grateful for you and your story. ❤️

That’s so beautiful Traci! What a testimony you have for those going through tough trials and loss.

    5. Tina says:

“..then i found God..” that brought tears.

.This is a beautiful testimony of how God is always close, even in the confusing dark times..
Much love and truckloads of hugs dear Traci..❤️❤️

  27. Cara P says:

“Mourning and Dancing” was the very first SRT study I ever did. it was so timely for me. In November 2019. My youngest daughter had just been murdered in August 2019 and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for me to start that study. I was a little hesitant on today’s study, Day 3 of The Beatitudes, thinking it might stir up memories and boy did it, but I know I will see her again and she’s in heaven.

    1. Tami says:

Cara – I am so sorry for your loss. I’m praying for God’s peace to wash over you today as memories are stirred up.

    2. Traci Gendron says:

Cara my heart goes out to you. Only God our Father can provide the comfort we need to endure such a tragedy as losing a child. And in your case so harshly. I’m so glad you are here.

    3. Wendy B says:

Cara, I am so very sorry for the devastating loss you have experienced. May God’s great comfort be ever so near❤️

    4. Rhonda J. says:

Oh Cara P, I am so sorry, that is horribly sad, I just can’t imagine. Yes, our mourning will have great times of dancing, if not here, in heaven when you see her again.

    5. Tina says:

Cara, I am so very sorry for your tragic loss.
Holding you close, as I pray for and over you from across the pond, may you know peace, even though memories may be stirred, and i pray Dear God of comfort, that You will hold Cara so close she will feel your loving arms around her..
      He is near..❤️

  28. Cee Gee says:

From John MacArthur NKJV Study Bible:
“those who mourn. This speaks of mourning over sin, the godly sorrow that produces repentance leading to salvation without regret (2 Cor. 7:10). The ‘comfort’ is the comfort of forgiveness and salvation (cf. Is. 40:1, 2).”

    2 Corinthians 7:10
10 For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

    1. Traci Gendron says:

I was a sobbing mess on my floor grieving over my sin when I first came back to God. I’m so thankful for His forgiveness and comfort.

      1. Cee Gee says:

        ❤❤❤

    2. Tina says:

The comfort is the comfort of forgiveness and salvation..
      .
      Amen.❤️❤️

  29. Rhonda J. says:

Jesus weeps with us. JESUS wept- shortest verse in the Bible. Jesus, God in the flesh, fully human with human emotions. He grew up and had all of our trials, hurts, betrayals, fear, loss and pain. That is always hard for me to fathom, because of course he is God. The disciple could have probably used a 3 more years, at least, to walk with Jesus and understand his ways. It really wasn’t until down the road that things started clicking and making sense.
That, too, is our road. It usually doesn’t make sense till we look back and see things with different eyes. What seemed so hard at the time, we see God got us through. We learned, we were strengthened. We hopefully see that through Jesus, he comforted us. Shaped us. Grew us in our trust and faith.
Many testimonies share that they are glad they went through their trials because it is the very thing that brought them to their knees and to cry out to God. Before that we have a reliance on ourselves. We are proud, and think we got everything under control. But until we surrender, we will never truly be in a beautiful, humble relationship with the Lord. He becomes our friend, father, comforted, our all and all. And we can sing….How Great Thou Art and It is Well with my soul. (I think that last song was written by a man that lost his 3 daughters at sea?) But he knew, that through faith and mercy, God would comfort him in his mourning.
The longer we live in this broken world, we will have lots of tears in that bottle God is holding. For he collects them and holds them all. But one day He will wipe away and things will be perfect. That is our living Hope and points us to WANTING heaven in great expectations!! The song “Come Jesus Come” captures the sentiment. We know there is ONLY one solution to brokenness- Jesus! So we live now in the wait, for him to come for His bride!! But we have to be ready in waiting, with excitement and expectation, oil in our lamps! For he will come unexpected, like a thief in the night. We have to be ready, armored and prepared. Are we living for him, or for ourselves. Are we building the boat, standing out like a crazy while others are Merry and drinking? Or are we preparing by staying in the word, meditating and memorizing, praying silently and without ceasing, and trusting in the trials? Time is short. Go and shout it from the mountains! Let you light shine from the hill. Pray with others, sing His praises night and day!! Stay like a watchman at the gate. It is not for naughty. The fields are ripe for harvest! Throw the seeds and water. Be the hands and feet for Jesus for those mourning!! Ye shall comfort as you have found comfort.
Thank you heavenly Father for the mourning, that gives me perspective that this world will never be it. The world is broken and fallen, as to my life here. Yet you give us just what we need to find joy and peace as we walk here. You give us the lamp at our feet, you go before and behind us. Your angels protect us. We have given instruction, true living, breathing word in scripture. We truly are blessed and grateful Lord. Build me strong and steadfast, building my house strong on the rocks to withhold the storms. For my eyes shall stay on you so I don’t sink!! Help us She’s to know that Fridays and Saturdays are hard- but Sunday is coming. That we shall see Joy in the morning after a bad night. You are holding us and will give us more than we can handle on our own to realize our need for you. We lift our eyes to you Lord today. Give us our daily bread and living water today. Just what every She needs here today for refreshment. Thank you in Jesus’ Mighty powerful name!

    1. Traci Gendron says:

  31. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

“Jesus, who endured the worst suffering so that we could be with Him. He will comfort us, until the day our eyes see Him face to face.” The one and only reason that Jesus suffered so greatly, is that we could be with him. My “sufferings” in this world can not ever compare to His. So I say to myself – “Stop complaining!”

Praying for all your requests, be blessed today sweet She’s. ❤️

    1. Tina says:

Having this devotional today is so appropriate. Last night we found out that our niece had a miscarriage. As a first time mom who had not been able to conceive, we were all so joyful. 34. Tanya Evans says:

I was reading the NIV commentary and I liked
“Those who have reached the bottom of the barrel, whether it is spiritual, emotional, or financial, or those who see the bankrupcy of thos around them, will mourn. Mourning characterizes life in the “already not yet” presence of the kingdom. We mourn oppression, persecution, personal sin and social evil because we mourn what God mourns. But as we mourn, we become instruments of the good news of the kingdom as we share with with others the comfort of God which we ourselves have been comforted.

God mourns. This was very evident in the death of Lazarus. God mourns on a global scale!

Prayer request: One of my coworkers lost his 32 year old sister. She was at her job at Walmart and a random man just came in violently stabbed her to death. His name is Wyatt. He is not a believer in Christ. She had no connection at all to this man.

    1. Pam Fite says:

That is terrible – so sorry for your friend and his family! Praying for all who are touched by this! The man who did this obviously also needs our prayers.

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

How truly tragic and sad. Prayers for your co-worker & the family. ❤️

    3. Carol H says:

Praying for Wyatt and family. What a senseless tragedy . We mourn

    4. Cee Gee says:

Oh, Tanya, that is so scary! Prayers for Wyatt and his family, for comfort that they will come to believe could only be from the One True God. Prayers for those co-workers, too! ❤

    5. Traci Gendron says:

Tanya I’m so sorry that this happened to your coworkers family. We hear these stories, but I’ve never felt it close to me. This breaks my heart over the mental illness that is prevailing in our country. There is a spiritual war going on.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

You’re right about that. And Satan knows his time is almost up! It truly is a fight for souls.
Prayers for Wyatt and this hard loss.

    6. Tina says:

Tanya, what a tragic and sad loss!
Praying for Wyatt and family as they mourn this sad, sad loss..

Amen. Father please forgive me. Bring comfort to my family and me. In Jesus name, Amen

  39. Mischelle Clare says:

Praise the Lord! His word is so good!

  40. Danielle B says:

During the long stormy season I experienced, the passage in 2 Corinthians was shared with me a few times. I can look back now and see how true that scripture is to my experience. Not only to I have a better understanding to be a comforter, but also times God prompted people to reach out and comfort me. Our stories can be the solace another person needs. May we be tuned into the Holy Spirit so our affliction can be a comfort to another.

    1. Tina says:

      So very true, Danielle. ❤️

  41. Searching says:

    Got Questions:
The kind of “mourning” that leads to repentance is truly blessed. Those who learn to mourn over their own sin find the heart of God. And intimate fellowship with God is the very foundation of true happiness.

  43. Tina says:

I have known sorrow in all shapes and sizes.. from the seismic proportion of an earthquake that could not be measured on a richter scale, to the loss of a relationship of 18 years, to my beautiful rose chopped to nothing.
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
Through the journey, the confusion, the heartbreak of each circumstance, He comforted me! He walked beside me, on days I ranted at Him, and on days I was silent. He guided me.
As my earthly father once asked me when I felt life overwhelming “Chris, did you wake up this morning?”
My reply was, “of course I did”
To which he replied.. “Then, it is well…”
    .
Here’s the thing, even those words of my earthly father were a comfort.. they pointed me to GOD.
    .
GOD gave me the Hope to move forward in His comforting grace that I received each day.. His comfort that helped lift one foot, then the next, until I realised when I looked back, I had climbed a mountain, absolutely by His grace..
    .
From the mountain top, I see His grace and protective loving arms, I feel the Hope of each waking day and daddy was right..
It IS well.. because Father GOD is the comfort in those days and moments of mourning. He is ever present..
    .
Thank you Father God, Thank you..
    .
    AMEN.
    .

    5. Cheryl Blow says:

  44. Kayla Bostwick says:

    Amen

  45. Kelly (NEO) says:

From HRT: “the blessed ones … mourn at what sin has done to the world, how it has ground people down and brought on death and destruction. It is grief over the fallen world. This mourning enters the suffering of the world and laments the damage done, while at the same time looking forward to a time of consolation.”
    .
So much of this goings on in this world brings me to a place of grief and mourning. The spiritual strongholds over nations and people groups that shrouds them in darkness and evil is heartbreaking.
    .
Thank you Ginny for pointing out, “God’s comfort is often not a generally warm feeling but a precise comfort we each need; it strengthens us and gives us hope to strengthen others.”
    .
Holy Spirit, help me to turn from looking in to looking up and out in times of grieving.
    .
