The healing of the woman is my favorite story. Skillet (the band) wrote a song called “Come My Way” and it’s all about this story. Still one of my favorite songs to this day because it’s from her perspective, and it’s SO moving.

“Do not fear, only believe.” Believe that God is in control. Believe that God’s power far outweighs man’s power & imagination. Believe that God works miracles. Believe that God has great compassion for the sick. Believe that God wants us to witness his works with amazement. Believe that this God is the same God we worship today. Do not be afraid. Just believe.

That’s awesome faith shown by the people in Mark!

  15. Charis Schneeberger says:

Praise God for healing and for his ultimate sacrifice so that we don’t have to do all those sacrifices. Though it is interesting how many times I think I still need to sacrifice. I have wrong thinking when I think that any of my actions will save me. It was his ultimate sacrifice.

  21. Tiff says:

35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
I love how Jesus reassures the father of the girl when he thought it was “too late.” God’s timing is not the same as ours and He knows how fearful it makes us when we don’t understand.

  22. KK says:

With the Numbers 30 passage, I looked up some commentary to better understand the ideas in the verses. http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/numbers/30.html

I was particularly struck with Numbers 30:15 – “But if he (the husband) makes them null and void after he has heard of them, then he shall bear her iniquity.” So, if the husband or father out of spite, overbearing authority, or immaturity denied his wife of a vow that was pleasing to God, the husband had to answer for it. This verse shows that God holds men accountable when they misuse their given authority and provides justice for women.

    1. Amy m. says:

      Thanks for this, KK!!

  23. Marley says:

I struggled initially with the Numbers reading and found it difficult to accept what was said and what was done, especially when I read the parts seeming to explicitly demean the women and their personal vows. But then skipping to Mark to witness the difference that sending Jesus meant for the representation and compassion really spoke to me in a meaningful way. I am definitely nervous for this study because it will mean accepting it all as truth or at least a representation of what was truth, but I think that’ll come with the juxtaposition of life after Christ came to show the selfless love of God. Anxious, unsure, but willing and ready.

  24. Kaleigh says:

Why does the lord encourage the oppression of women in These chapters?

    1. Emaleigh says:

Kaleigh I don’t think He really does. You have to remember the context He is working in. For most of history women have been oppressed-it’s not until recent years, in 1st world countries, that we have been able to attain any type of real equality. Change doesn’t happen all at once, it’s a slow, step by step process. You can usually only work on a few things at a time, and I think God has to “pick His battles.” We see the same thing with slavery in the NT. Is it wrong? Yes. Yet the NT seems to “encourage” it by telling slaves and masters to remain as they are. Major cultural changes, like the treatment of women and slavery, have to happen over time, and they have to begin with individuals. If you look at stories with individuals, I think it’s pretty clear that God values women highly! Just look at the passage in Mark – a poor, suffering women, and a little girl, yet Jesus’ compassion for them is so clear.

      1. Kaleigh says:

Emaleigh, thank you so much for your understanding and guidance. This helps me a lot!

  25. Whitney says:

Very excited about this study! Just started today!

  26. Lauren Bourgeois says:

I loved this reading! It was so difficult to initially grasp, but reading comments, and meditating on it revealed so much perspective to me! I’m so thankful. God is always working for our good. Though it’s difficult for our human minds to process death, imagine how many lives were saved by these deaths! He was/is making a way for many to come to the Kingdom. God is hard to relate to, as He is too complex for the human mind to fully comprehend, but as He gives life, sometimes He also takes it. Hallelujah! We have a God wise beyond words, and the way of this world. Though we may not always be able to make sense of what He’s doing by our earthly standards, we are able to find unending peace in fully trusting in His plan.

  31. Rachel says:

12,000 men were taken into battle and all of them returned! It amazes me how in the midst of Gods plan, everything literally works out and nothing is lost!

  32. Hannah M. says:

Ever since sin entered the world in the Garden, the consequence of sin is death, and that truth remains today. We see this immediately when animal skins are used to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness and shame. Ultimately now Christ’s blood covers our shame! But in this moment in the OT, Christ has not yet come. God’s grace in the OT is seen in Him still allowing a way -through blood sacrifice atonement- for the Israelites to not grieve fellowshipping with Him. Their sin disease, like the bleeding woman, is a chronic condition, and we also have that same chronic sin condition today! No means nor efforts on our part can ever cure or remove our sin problem. It is so hard to read of the steep price in sacrifice that God required here in the OT reading. But we often are SO disconnected by the glory (weight) of God’s presence and God’s absolute holiness! We forget to marvel in his glory and holiness and think on it! His holiness does not allow for Him to be in the presence of sin at all! That part of his character plus our chronic sin nature means there is absolutely no way we could be in fellowship together! BUT GOD…provided a way out of his great love for us…to not be separated from him! Though a tough read today, praise God that in spite of the Israelites’ CONSTANT sin and missteps and his very RIGHTEOUS anger, God allowed a way for them to not be separated from Him!!! It wasn’t His original plan either, but he loves Israel and keeps putting up with them and NEVER gives up on them. His mercies never fail as they do not deserve to be in His presence. Praise God for his Son, Jesus, whose blood paid it all, once for all!!! For the New Covenant that we all share in today that means there is no more blood sacrifice needed to be with God now and forever when we believe on Him. Thank you, Jesus, for what you have done! Through your blood I receive God’s grace on me, a sinner, who does not deserve to be in the presence of our Most High God! I am humbled before the Lord that he allows me, a wretched sinner, to be in His presence and to bask in His glory.

    1. Lauren Bourgeois says:

      Amen!!

  33. Lea M says:

Mark 5:36 really stood out to me, “don’t be afraid; just believe.” Wow! The simplicity and directness of these words is so powerful! I will refer to this verse often when I need strength and courage.

    1. Kamryn says:

I completely agree! I felt the same way when I read those words! So powerful and mighty!

  34. Savannah says:

Though God is too great for us to understand, we can rest knowing he has a plan and everything is for that plan. Though it may not make sense to our human minds, God is greater! And as shown in the NT passage today, he also has the power to heal. We need only to have faith in Him, in his plan

  35. Roslyn Wollman says:

I wonder what they did with the 32,000 virgins? Is the whole point of the plague that they slept with the heathen women. This makes me sad. So sad, all throughout the old testament innocent people have to bear the punishment for the wicked. Oh Lord, it makes me want to weep. How are my bad decisions affecting those around me? Even today we subject to the decisions of those around us. How will I ever learn to trust? It seems like God is the only one I trust with my life, my safety, and me decisions. Reading this is like a knife stabbing that trust. And I have to continually dwell on that song by Carrollton “Even though I cannot see where you are leading me, I am yours and you are faithful.” Please help my trust Lord. This world is a really scary place. Look at any newspaper. It is enough to put the fear of God into your life. Lord, we need you.

  36. Lauren A says:

I thought it was neat that the woman had been suffering from her bleeding disease for 12 years, and the young girl Jesus also healed was 12 years old.

  37. Samantha Dorsey says:

Love in Mark 5:36 when it says don’t be afraid just believe. This is so true in my life as we speak!!!

  38. Meaghan says:

I love how Jesus healed the woman with a bleeding disease(I cannot fathom being on my period my whole life, ahh!) But he doesn’t just free her disease and leave her there. He goes out of his way to find her and call her ‘daughter’ so she can know who she belongs too. Jesus doesn’t just want to heal us of our disease(sin) but he also came so he could draw near and heal our souls of loneliness, brokenness, shame, etc. My favorite passage in the bible! Always touches my heart.

    1. Amy says:

Yes I love how Jesus is constantly restoring people!

  39. Leah Swindon says:

How often do we need to be reminded of this verse: 5:36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Lord, may I take these words to heart, even in trying and stressful times.

    1. Heidi Wray says:

I have to remind myself everyday!!

  40. Pam Blum says:

My Bible study notes say this about Mark 5:43: “In the vicinity of Galilee Jesus often cautioned people whom he healed not to spread the story of the miracle. His great popularity with the people, coupled with the growing opposition from religious leaders, could have precipitated crisis before Jesus’ ministry was completed.”

    1. Gabrielle says:

Jesus didn’t want to be associated as a political messiah, what so many people assume(d) the messiah would be. He shows us time and time again that he’s for peace.

  41. Heather says:

I think it’s because the bleeding woman came in humility and much faith so Jesus wanted to tell
Others of her faith because it was very real, whereas the people of the daughter did not seem to believe as well and had less faith and so He told them to keep quiet because they had come in front of all the ppl out loud wanting Jesus to heal his daughter . I feel because he might’ve partly come out of pride because of his position as a synagogue leader . So this Jesus told him to keep things under cover

  42. Kala says:

34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

  43. Linda says:

The violence of the OT has always been hard to read…much like our current headlines. What helps me is to remember that God was making for Himself a Holy nation. So many evil practices surrounded them and had to be destroyed so Israel could inherit the land. So much blood which also foreshadowed the way of Christ.

The other thing in today’s reading that got my attention. One woman touches Him quietly for healing. Jesus knew, yet he called attention to her. Then he raises the daughter from death and tells them to say nothing. Hmmm, wondering the difference.

    2. Heather says:

Also I think it’s bc she basically came in secret to Jesus and God asks that we come to Him in secret too . Not loudly proclaiming that we are being godly in front of others

    3. Megan says:

That helps me read and understand these OT passages a lot. Thanks!

  44. Antimony says:

Jesus healed the woman with the chronic disease. And He healed the little girl with the acute illness. He demonstrated power over physical illness of all kinds. A visible show of His power and compassion.

  45. The OT had a lot of requirements to bring or offer this and that, the NT just says “Come.”
The Law says: Do work Grace says: Come rest.
Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice so that we can freely just come and rest at your feet!

    1. Gabrielle says:

That’s a great summary! And God is so amazing because he is God in both realities.

  46. Caroline says:

I agree this is a hard one to read this morning. Praying for peace and understanding. And thankful that God isn’t afraid of our questions and we WILL be able to hear from Him about it one day. His mind is above ours. His ways are above our ways. He is always good, even when we don’t understand it.

  47. Kelly says:

40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.

Miracles happen in an environment of faith

    1. Kate says:

This stood out to me too. Get rid of those who doubt God’s work

  48. Kelly says:

48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”

I like how the goodness of the Lord led the officers to give a portion of their plunder.

    1. Britt Biddinger says:

and no one had to tell them! they were just awed by the sound victory and thankful got the safety of their men and their automatic heart response was worship! beautiful! sometimes after a battle, if we can account for the safety of everyone that’s all the victory we need.

  49. Nancy says:

    *hard time relating

  50. Nancy says:

In bible study we are always comparing Old Testament God to New Testament God. I have a hard time relate my to OT God. I know it was all for a greater purpose but I stumble with the Pentateuch. God I pray you guide us through these difficult books and show us the meaning.

    1. Taylor B says:

I think I know what you mean, but just to clarify, OT God and NT are the same. He never changes! The OT is harder for us to understand. Also I don’t think we are supposed to relate to God so that may make the OT hard for us, because we are only to see Him and He will give us understanding and show us more of who He is so we can glorify Him. We can however relate to Jesus, the clear focus of the NT. This is because he made himself human, something we can understand. I hope that makes sense. I pray for you as you read His word, that He would give you understanding and reveal Himself to you clearly. I pray that even when you don’t understand that you would just trust and rest in Him because He is greater and true!

  51. Elisa says:

Chapter 31 really blows my mind…they killed so many, including CHILDREN, and then turned around and made sure to cleanse themselves so they wouldn’t be unclean. Seems so legalistic. So WRONG, and yet they obviously wanted to do right before God (in fact, the way I’m reading this, God gave them the victory in this battle!) Does anyone have any insight into this chapter that they could share?

    1. Elisha says:

This one’s hard for a Christian, isn’t it. The concept of holy war is difficult. Though this campaign was executed by the people, it was clearly God’s hand at work as an act of vengeance on the Midianites, who were the source of the Israelites’ unfaithfulness at Shittim, remember? Especially the women, hence Moses’ anger at the women being spared. They were allowed to spare the virgins, who couldn’t have been involved in the plot. But it is brutal. But I suppose a Christian can take away from this God’s zeal for the realization of his purpose, his concern for our purity, and the demand that all glory be his.

    2. Elisha says:

Another thought in light of the new testament reading. The power of death is in God’s hand, but also the power of life. He lifted Jarius’ young daughter from death to life. God also holds the lives of all those Midianite children in his hand as well. Who’s to say that they will not be raised as well?

      1. Liesl says:

I have a hard time with all the death too, and appreciate this thought about the children being brought back!

    3. Kaily says:

Elisa I totally relate to you! I had a hard time thinking about this with my 7 month old son in the other room. I’ve asked my dad about this and he is very wise in the scriptures and always gives me a different perspective. Children are so very innocent, but they also end up being products of their environment. He children were included in the number killed because of who they would end up being when they grow up, is basically how he explained it. This still didn’t sit well with me but this did- by killing them now, the innocent souls are saved because their hearts aren’t yet evil. If they were to have grown up and became corrupt like the rest of their people they would not have. God has a plan. That’s what I tell myself.

  52. Lydia says:

Sometimes I don’t understand the ways of the Old Testament.
I am choosing today to let it draw me back into conversation with our Lord.

On this Monday, He is STILL risen, just as He said!

    1. Britt Biddinger says:

      Amen sister!

  53. Aja says:

    Great faith
