It’s amazing to me that God used a Persian king to rebuild Jerusalem. He didn’t just give them permission to rebuild. He ordered the people of the land to help them by giving them gifts of every kind. God’s purpose cannot be thwarted. His plan will be accomplished, even if the means are unusual!

Trying to figure out the timeline… Does anyone know if this Mordecai (in ezra 2:2) is the same Mordecai from the book of Esther? I know Esther’s rise to becoming queen was during the Persian empire so it seems plausible, but I thought Mordecai was made 2nd in command in Persia which kind of seems like he would stay rather than go back. Has anyone studied this?

My study Bible says it probably isn’t because of the time gap. It says Nehemiah begins about 90 years after vs. 2, and Esther’s story happens about 50 years after.

I found verse 5 of Ezra chapter one interesting. Everyone whose heart God had moved prepared to go up and build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem.
Those going to build this temple had been moved by God. They knew God and were aware of his power. Pretty cool!-

Holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is, and is to come! -
At the end of Ezra 2, it gives the amounts of gold and silver that the people gave to the building of the temple. I calculated the value of each in today’s prices of gold and silver. The total for gold was $20.1 million and silver was $1.3 million! How generous and excited the people were to rebuild the temple! Do I get that excited about the House of God as well? Not it’s the not the same as the temple but I think the principle of a generous heart applies and is something I need to work on.

This is beautiful. I often wonder why the Word gets so detailed, like why do I need to know the exact number of these people… What a beautiful way to see the Word of God.

Wow! Also do I invest into my own temple of the Holy Spirit (my heart and body) by doing quiet time, prayer, eating right and exercising? Lord help us be generous to invest in your temple.
