This reading today really touched me. We mustn’t focus on worldly, modern day idols. That relying on God and reading His word, we have every tool we need in order to get through life!

  2. Laura says:

    20 And Isaiah says boldly:

    I was found
    by those who were not looking for Me;
    I revealed Myself
to those who were not asking for Me.

21 But to Israel he says: All day long I have spread out My hands to a disobedient and defiant people.
So very thankful for our God who seeks out those who are not seeking Him, and reaches out to those who live in defiance of Him…gives me hope in my God as I pray for those I love who walk in darkness :( my hope is not in their turning from their ways or trying to reach out to Him…HE is my ONLY Hope!! ;)

This verse, Hosea 2:5 Their mother has been unfaithful
and has conceived them in disgrace.
She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who give me my food and my water,
my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’

Reminds me of how easy it is to give ourselves the glory for the things we have “earned” in this life. Those things, career, money, etc can distract us from our need for God..we feel self reliant. It’s a good reminder that it’s easier to have modern day idols than we think.

    1. TGBTG says:

Hi Leah, I like that you put quotations around “earned” . I agree. Once we start believing we “earned” things we are slipping away from God. We didn’t earn anything, we have been blessed with and by everything we come into contact with. Even the ugly things because within them is a lesson for us.

    2. Christina D. says:

Thank you for sharing this today. I’m a stay at home mom and today felt particularly useless…I no longer have a thriving career (outside of the home) and we moved right before I gave birth (don’t have any friends etc in our new town) so I spend truly almost all of my time with my daughter. I am realizing how much pride I have taken in my career and self reliance. I idolized a lot of things about my life that are no longer present. At times I feel myself reaching to prove that I still am self sufficient and successful! I’m not sure if that’s exactly what you meant by modern day idols but either way it really spoke to me and was a gentle reminder that even above being a mom, my total reliance on God is the most important and precious thing I have.

      1. Lorie says:

Christina, you have THE most important job. Don’t let the devil speaks lies into your life. I am also a SAHM and have felt similar things before. However, I know this is my purpose and I am sooo thankful I am able to stay home and raise my baby. You are raising an arrow for God’s kingdom!

      2. Kristen S says:

I agree with the other poster as well. I am a SAHM to three and have a college degree. My family doesn’t understand why I don’t use it. I happen to be homeschooling which utilizes my teaching degree perfectly. I have been struggling with knowing “my worth” for a long time now and it wasn’t until this year that I’m finally seeing it/feeling it. THIS is my passion and what I was made to do. It is priceless. I still struggle with it and my heart goes out to you but do not let the enemy speak lies to you about you or your worth. If this is your calling, you are exactly where God wants you to be! Your day to day “nothing’s” are all a way to serve the Lord.

      3. Katie says:

I struggle too! In fact last night I told my husband I don’t think staying at home is going to workout much longer. Yet I need to remember the Lord has given me this time and I need to be thankful for it.

      4. Justine Fern says:

oh Christina, I’m also a stay at home mom and I’m right there with you in the trenches! I have to let the Spirit remind me that this gig isn’t always fun or rewarding – oh but it’s so worth it. staying at home is a sacrifice, it’s humbling, it’s messy and loud, and even causes cabin fever! but I’ve been encouraged in seeing my son start to be more independent – I love that I’m able to be around to see him try new things and grow into the adventurous little boy he’s becoming. this is the greatest job ever (for me personally), and I’m praying we’re all reminded that success doesn’t always come in the form of big paychecks and job promotions :)

      5. Chassity says:

Amen ladies. I’m a sahm too and my kids are school age now, 6th and 1st grade. I’ve started working from home but still available for the family and kids if they get sick or forget their lunch box ha ha. God has allowed us this time and though it’s a challenge at times, the reward of serving is a blessing. Keep pushing ladies! Be blessed.

The story of Hosea is such a beautiful, yet ugly story. The faithfulness of God is laid plain, and the heart of humanity is uncovered. He loves and continues to constantly pursue and romance the human race, only to be rejected time and again. As evidenced by the price he paid to redeem us, there is nothing greater than the love our Creator God has for us. If only we, as a whole, would reciprocate it.

    1. Justine Fern says:

      so beautifully put Kerri!

    2. Heidi L says:

Yes…what a great passage to remind us that God is not finished with us… or Israel, when we go astray. He longs for our return and relentlessly pursues us. What a day it is when we relent, repent and respond to His calling. AND what a day it will be when His “wife” Israel returns to Him! Thank God He is our faithful God!

  5. Jeannie says:

If you’ve never read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, I highly recommend it! It’s a novel patterned after Hosea. A must-read!

    1. Jenny Jewell says:

My absolute all time favorite book! It’s the only book I ever gift away anymore :)

      1. Tanya says:

Love that book. I was thinking about it while reading this passage too

      2. TMO says:

        What is it about?

        1. BF says:

It’s a modern day retelling of the story of Hosea. It reads like a love story, full of tragedy and sorrow, but it all points to God’s faithfulness to us, His unfaithful bride. I think it is the best book Francine Rivers has ever written.

      3. TMO says:

I think it challenges us to continue to try to know him, and also accept that we may never really know him like Moses and Jonah alluded to …

      4. TMO says:

But maybe the hunger is what we ultimately should be fighting for

  6. Katrina says:

Romans 10:10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

    It all starts from within…

  7. Shirl says:

16 “And in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’

19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.

Such lovely imagery. I’ve never read Hosea completely before and the analogy of Israel being like a prostitute and the Lord as her faithful husband is beautiful. Such steadfast merciful love. How often we run after things that don’t satisfy but Jesus is patient, forgiving and loving.

    1. Laura says:

“Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers is such a great re telling of the story of Hosea and put it in a different light for me…I’d always read Hosea thinking of the Lord’s goodness to us as He pursues us even though we’ve been unfaithful and Redeeming Love shows the other side and how difficult it is for someone so broken to receive His unrelenting, unconditional, faithful and tender love…something I could never quite understand in some of those I love most :(

      1. Justine Fern says:

thanks for the new perspective Laura!

  8. TGBTG says:

Roman’s 10:21 But concerning Israel he says,
“All day long I have held out my hands
to a disobedient and obstinate people.”
Dear Father help us to recognize our disobedience and obstinate behavior so that we may reach out and grab the hand you are offering us.

    1. Suzanne says:

Amen to that, I pray for this also.
