Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him. This made me think, how do I react to seeing God’s work in the lives of others? Do I let it burden me or make me bitter? Or do I celebrate and let it encourage me on my own journey? Great reading! ❤️
It’s easy to say our sins have been forgiven and we are made new in Christ and such, but another thing for me to believe that at the deepest level of my being. Praying that the depth of the truth of reconciliation and forgiveness will continue to transform the way I think, act, and live. Let this message change us, and, therefore, give hope and new life to those around us.
I love how God was preparing David for this fight long before with bears and lions. That at the time David was just protecting his sheep, and didn’t fully understand the usefulness of this skill until later. I pray that God continues to use our past and current skills for his glory and good, and that we have clarity in what these skills are
Lord help us to have your heart for the lost, to understand the honor and responsibility put on us to plead and implore them to come to Christ as your ambassadors.
14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. -ellie
I read this story with fresh eyes, even though it has been a “classic” Bible story tucked away in my heart since I was a little girl. What struck me most was when David claimed confidence in the Lord…his courage was a direct result of God’s faithfulness, goodness, and strength shown in David’s life prior to his encounter with Goliath. “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the Philistine.” I LOVE that!!!
I love the story told in these chapters of 1 Samuel. Just one question: in chapter 17:55-58, does King Saul not recognize David as the musician who previously played the harp for him? Before the reading this week, I didn’t realize that David had already spent time in the king’s presence before killing Goliath.
I noticed this as well. I think Saul was only wondering what lineage David was from, even though he had been Saul’s harp player he probably wasn’t allowed to speak to Saul directly since he was king so yes he probably did recognize him but only wondered about David personally after he killed Goliath. Just speculation.
Love, Love the story of David and the reminder throughout the Bible of God’s power and provisions and how he consistently uses the weak, unsuspecting, young, old, poor, or undeserving to accomplish His Agenda! His plan always prevails!
David’s courage and faith in God is so inspiring to me! This is my first time truly examining this passage, though I’ve heard the story all my life, and I was bookmarking all over the place. :)
1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
As Paul tells the people, what we have in this life when it comes to more worldly pleasures such as wealth, social status, etc. doesn’t matter because we are blessed with eternal life in heaven, which coincides with what he wrote yesterday in 2corinthians 4:18 “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Society has conditioned us to define success and happiness by materials, which are only temporary, when in reality God’s everlasting love and eternal grace for us is all that matters. Pauls writing is a reminder that I need to focus less on what others think and less on achieving earthly success and focus more on what god thinks and living to serve him.
I love that David says God delivered him before, of course he’ll do it again..in v. 37 of chapter 17. Such a good reminder that God continues to deliver his people.
I love these two passages. One showing Our Father’s enormous strength and how he demonstrates that is is turbine who fights for us! Oh how bold David was and confident in God! And in 1 Corinthians how things of this world are so minute. That we are a fragrance among the living! Live boldly for Him!
I love your phrasing that “we are a fragrance among the living.” That is so true. So much is revealed in these two passages and all the truths balance out. From David v Goliath, we get that this is the Lord’s battle. HE gives us strength to fight and strength to live courageously in whatever vocation we have. Then throughout Corinthians we are being instructed to lead the people and stay strong in our faith so that we can show people the light. But in 2 Cor 5:16, Paul (is that who wrote these letters) reminds us that “from now on we regard no one from a worldly view.” Paul knows that we are human and this leadership can get to our head. But if we constantly see how everyone is God’s child and recognize how God is seeking every person we encounter, then we cannot become prideful. God is about reconciliation. And reconciliation is about humility.
Overwhelmed at the beauty of what Christ did for us at the cross. In awe because I know I don’t deserve what He has done, but yet He still chose me to become part of His family. Wow…nothing I did, but He chose me. Oh how I need Him.
Btw, just sharing, I started reading Beth Moore’s “A HEART LIKE THIS” today… it’s a book that digs a deeper study in the life of David.. Got a free copy of it a when an online christian bookstore gave away 14 Beth Moore ebooks last year… i waited til we come to this Chapters to read it… if i’m allowed to send copies of it to those who want it, please comment your email address below. Have a blessed day!
My 1st time to closely read and study the life of David and iI was blown away by his faith!
“Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?” – 1 Sam 17:26b
“The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” – 1 Sam 17:37
“You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies…” – (v.45)
—Truly, He is a Man After God’s Own Heart! He has always sought for God’s Glory and not his own! He believed that “THERE IS A GOD, AND THE BATTLE BELONGS TO HIM!”
“His robes for mine, oh wonderful exchange! Clothed in my sin, Christ suffered ‘neath God’s rage. Draped in his righteousness, i’m justified. In Christ I live, for in my place he died.
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. To think that the pure and righteous Jesus traded places with me just overwhelms my heart.

17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Encouraged by David’s faith in God! He kept God in everything he did and gave all the glory to him! May I keep God in all of my plans!
