We are not to associate with people who claim to be believers and act otherwise. Yes everyone is sinful but he’s talking about blatant lifestyle of sin and claiming to be a Christian. That is pure hypocrisy and does so much harm to the name of Christ followers. The goal is to have them open their eyes to their hypocrisy and hopefully long for spiritual relationship again.
I feel like it’s a hard line to draw between trying to love believers who do these things and turn them away from what they’re doing, and doing what Paul says which is to “not even eat” with them. It’s hard because I feel like we are first called to love everyone, even believers who sin, but I guess the difference is constantly spending time with a believer who lives in sin will eventually make you question the principles of your own belief.
For some reason my phone won’t let me post reply comments so this is in response to Rebecca Leek’s comment. I wrestled through the same part of this passage as well. I think the key to understanding what Paul is trying to say is that we are not to associate with people who CLAIM to be believers, but their lifestyle choices and patterns show us their real fruit. Verse 13 goes on to called them “wicked” because they are talking the talk, but not walking the walk. The reason for these instructions to the church could be twofold; for one, we don’t want to be influenced by their behaviour, then think that it’s OK for us to behave immorally as well and yet still call ourselves “Christian”. Or secondly, maybe by withdrawing from them, we might help them come to a realization that they aren’t living in right relationship with God either and that realization may bring them to repentance.
Paul goes on to make a distinction between these people inside the church who are living for themselves, and the people outside the church, who are living in and for the world because they don’t actually know any better. We aren’t being called to disassociate with this second group, the people of the world, but instead we have been commissioned to love them into the kingdom of God. The lost need to be accepted for who they are, and experience love and relationship BEFORE WE can expect them to change their behaviours.
This is just me processing my thoughts. Feel free to test all of it against what the rest of scripture says, as we all should.

I think the key to understanding what Paul is trying to say is that we are not to associate with people who CLAIM to be believers, but their outward actions contradict what they confess. Verse 13 goes on to called them “wicked” because their lifestyle choices go against God’s commands. They are talking the talk, but not walking the walk. The reason for this warning could be twofold; for one, we don’t want to be influenced by their behaviour, then begin to think that it’s OK to behave immorally and yet still call ourselves “Christian”. Or maybe by us withdrawing from them, we might help them come to repentance by making them understand that those behaviours are wrong.

7Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Lots of leaven and struggles sometimes
This stuck out to me as well! They were so specific about the details because they wanted to document all the blessings God had given them as He promised.
Towards the end of Joshua, just as the people are dividing their portions of the land and all the borders & perimeters are being listed, and I start to wonder why ANY of this matters–
43 Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. 44 And the Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. 45 Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; ALL CAME TO PASS (emphasis mine)
And suddenly, we’re in the promised land.
Thank You Lord for delivering on your promises and keeping your word! We are amazed by you!!!
I was feeling the same way- then BAM. The point was clear- not one word of Gods promise failed!! Powerful reminder to me that even though I got forgetful, or distracted, or annoyed with how long it took …HIS Word is perfect. HE never fails. I may not be faithful, but HE always will be. Thank you Lord!!!
Love Joshua 21:45. This book can be hard to read with all the repetition and history but the fact that not ONE of His promises ever failed is what I needed today.
Katie! Same here! So beautiful how something so ancient not only relates but is still working and moving though us!! The Word of God last forever and ever Amen!!
If anyone has a hold of the Message version, I encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 5 in that version. The wording is great. I really enjoyed the way it ended the chapter by saying, “God decides on the outsiders, but we need to decide when our brothers and sisters are out of line, and if necessary, clean house.” We should always hold our brothers and sisters in Christ accountable of their actions as they should with us. We all strive to be Christ-like but we won’t achieve that if we don’t speak up and help those when they fall out of line.
Thank you for this! I was struggling with the wording in the NIV, ESV, and KJV. It sounds like we are being told to judge others! But the way you explained it makes so much sense! So thankful for this app and being able to learn and understand more of God’s word through sisters in Christ.
I love how 1 Cor 5 lays out exactly how we as Christians are supposed to handle our fellow bros and sisters vs those in the world. It’s not our place to judge those who don’t know Christ. We are to love them and get to know them so that hopefully they will see the loving kindness of the Lord, come to him, & repent and turn from their ways.
But in dealing w/ our bros and sisters, we can not look the other way when someone is claiming they live for God & their life shows different. We have to keep one another accountable!
I was struck by these verses too. Very convicting since we live in a time where I feel like many Christians are more interested in worrying about making America a “Christian Nation” instead of sharing Christ with others
12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
Many kings had to be conquered, much land was taken, but the promise of victory remained. In the end, the promise of the Lord stood fulfilled and secure. He is faithful!
6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
I was struck by these verses. Their symbolism and poetry make the message easy to understand and individualize.
“Not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to (insert your name) was left unfulfilled. Everything He has spoken came true.” – Joshua 21:45 (my version)
Wow! At the end of my life here on earth I want this verse written on my tombstone! :)
Also, Joshua, Caleb, and the Levites were given special favor because they’ve shown exceptional faith throughout the journey! Oh Lord, I want to have the same kind of faith that they had! to be set apart in Your sight too!
45 Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
If the Lord has kept and fulfilled all His promises to Israel, how much more He will do that for us, His beloved in Christ! Jesus, help me remember that You are the same, back then and now, and to remember all the promises You’ve given me still stand in my season of waiting.

The last verse nails the reason why we are to take care of sin in the church. Because the world is looking and judging.
