It was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand, your arm,
and the light of your face, for you loved them.

Sitting in the hospital waiting for my husband to have another MRI. After a brain tumor 2 years ago and over 25 years of health trauma following a bone transplant in 1990…I have known this kind of conversation with God. The wake up! Where are you? The question you dare whisper…can I really trust you? The final answer is always yes. Who else would I run to? Who else can I trust with my soul? The trials of a lifetime will one day be lost in the unimaginable life with Christ for all of eternity. Until then, I remember that God can handle all of my questions…the raw, unveiled conversations that I have with Him when I am weary of trouble. He alone knows the beginning and end of our story. #gratefulgirl
I love this Psalmist’s honesty before God. Too often we feel we need to come before our maker already fixed, resembling images of perfection rather than recipients of grace. My father in law told me once, during a particularly difficult season in our life, “Cry out to God when you’re angry! When you’re upset or hurt or feeling slighted, talk to Him in that moment — tell Him everything!” And so began my honest God talks, the kind where I asked Him questions and told Him my actual concerns & cares and not just perfect prayers. What a difference it has made, being honest and bringing my brokenness before the One who knit me in my mother’s womb. He’s seen it all since the beginning, why would my troubles be too much for Him now, all of a sudden? Thankful today for a God who cares, who may sometimes seem far away but who longs for our earnest prayers and honest hearts.
23-26 Get up, God! Are you going to sleep all day?
Wake up! Don’t you care what happens to us?
Why do you bury your face in the pillow?
Why pretend things are just fine with us?
And here we are — flat on our faces in the dirt,
held down with a boot on our necks.
Get up and come to our rescue.
If you love us so much, Help us!
My father passed away 3 months ago from a horrible accident that has caused many terrible effects in my family past just the grief of losing someone we loved. The psalms give such comfort, even seeing how the psalmist cried out to God is such agony and confusion. There are moments I feel like this and am so confused- how amazing is it we can trust God with all our feelings, even the times we feel like everything is falling apart and we are confused at what God is doing. I k ow he is good and his promises are true, and he listens and loves us even when my prayers at times seem to echo the one above.
I have had moments where I’m honest with God like this too. Asking Him where He is, and why He doesn’t care what happens to me. Praying for you Hannah, for your family, for peace to surround you, and for God to shine His face on you. Love to you from MN!!
Off topic but ladies, I’m dealing with a broken heart. I thought I heard God tell me this man was the one, but he heard differently from God. I’m confused how we heard completely different answers, and now I’m very hurt and now alone. Trying to find God’s grace in this situation. He is good, always. But I wonder when I will ever be good for a man of God on this earth who will stay.
Perhaps he isn’t listening to God
Or perhaps it’s just later and now God wants to work on you and make sure no man gives you worth because you’re worthy of love and all that God made you for so don’t be broken hearted but rejoice in all things!!!
6 I put no trust in my bow,
my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame
I love this verse it reminds me that we shouldn’t do things our way but Gods way.
.
“17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. 18Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; 19yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, 21would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 22Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 23Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! 24Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. 26Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!” Often in the Old Testament God’s people rejected him, forgot him and ran after other gods. He disciplined them and allowed other nations to conquer and rule over them. But in Psalm 44 the psalmist points out the people have not forgotten God and yet affliction has still come their way. This makes me wonder what was God up to? Why did he allow his people to experience brokenness? Why did he let them feel rejected if they were doing right? This reminds me of times in my life and the lives of others where bad things happen to people who love and follow God. It also reminds me that loving and serving God doesn’t create an invisible forcefield of protection for me against bad things happening. Being a believer doesn’t mean I won’t experience trouble. Jesus himself said trouble would be a reality in this world. But to take heart because he has overcome the world. In hard times we are NOT alone. God is with us so we don’t have to struggle alone. He produces purpose for our pain. This text leads me to learn more about the context of Psalm 44 and what God was doing that his people couldn’t see at the time, but understood later.
“7You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy more than your companions.”
I like this correlation between loving righteousness/hating wickedness and being anointed with joy. Joy comes God, but it is related to loving what is right and hating what is evil. When we have a lack of joy, sometimes it might be because we are doing or condoning things that are wrong, or it might be that we aren’t loving or seeing the good things going on around us and we’re ambivalent in our ungratefulness.
3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand, your arm,
and the light of your face, for you loved them.
I LOVE how this directly corresponds to yesterday’s reading in Deuteronomy when Moses reminds the people that it is not because of their righteousness that they inherited the Promised Land.
I agree, there’s this constant reminder that we are not here by our own power..today I completed my to do list and was quite proud of myself until I read these and remembered that Gods grace and mercy allow me to complete all things. It’s always humbling.
The beginning of Psalm 44 perfectly ties in with our reading in Deuteronomy yesterday. It was not the Israelites but God who would drive out the nations before them. B
Psalm 44 touched my heart as David wrote of God’s mighty works in the beginning, but which later led to, “Where are you?” The truth is that He never leaves even when our feelings might say otherwise. It is good to practice gratitude for what He’s done and what He is continuing to do (even though we may not see it from our perspective yet). He IS FAITHFUL.
1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
From psalm 45. I love how David writes! He is so moved by God and so honest. This is how I want to frame my thoughts, my poetry, and my life. My heart is stirred by a noble Theme, as I LIVE for the King!
44:1 “O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us the work that You did in their days, in the days of old”. The importance of remembering what God has done in previous days, years, decades, etc.
10 Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear:
Forget your people and your father’s house;
11 Then the King will desire your beauty.
Because He is your Lord, bow down to Him.
When we leave everything for his sake, we do it because we see how he desires us, like a bridegroom. By leaving it all, we gain “a hundred times more” in this life (plus persecutions) but it’s all because He has called us to follow Him, the glorious righteous King.
Psalm 44:3 reminded me so much of yesterday’s reading in Duet 8:18. It is not our strength or power, but the Lord’s. I love the way we are doing the reading. The connections throughout the Bible are just coming alive for me! Ephesians carries the same message. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)
It’s because His Word is living! It is God’s very breath, with His eternal life wrapped up in there. And we are just as human as they were back then. ;)
Psalm 44 6 I put no trust in my bow,
my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God we make our boast all day long,
and we will praise your name forever.

Psalm 44:3 ❤️
God brings us out of troubles, not ourselves, because he LOVES us! How cool to be loved by the creator of the universe
My confidence must be in God, not my own strength, wisdom, or ability. He is all I need. (Psalm 44:6-8)
Similar to yesterday’s Deuteronomy message: It is God’s doing, not ours.
17I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.
amen!-ellie
7you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;
Therefore nations will praise you forever and ever! May it be so Lord!

Thanks for sharing this Kylee. It’s a great reminder.
Going through tough times with work right now. I have to remember to keep my trust in God, for only he can give victory over any situation!

Yes, I had exactly the same thought! :)
Ps 45:17 resounds of leaving a legacy to those who follow. Lord, may I be worthy of leaving a vs 17 legacy.
Psalm 44 – I have felt exactly like this so many times. How is it that I can still relate so deeply to a poem written like 5000 years ago?
