This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. The Book of Amos: The book of Amos uses poetic verse, in the form of oracles and visions, to proclaim God’s justice and judgment against Israel and especially its capital city, Samaria.
How Amos Fits Into the Story: By proclaiming justice against Israel and its capital city of Samaria, the book of Amos reminds us of the sovereignty of God and His involvement with His people. Amos emphasizes the coming Day of the Lord, a day when all people will be held accountable, while also boasting in the hope and glory of Christ’s return.

– Justice being severed is the final against sinners. Does not matter how much wailing or crying you do the Lord Jesus will be enacting on His justice alone against those who are trespassing against Him.

– I think when I react to my sin I want to make sure that I am owing up to my own sin and not play victim. With bringing a humble heart along with good amount of humanity we like to ask for justice against the people who have done wrong to us. When it’s not our job to bring justice the Lord will get justice for us.

– The Lord is our Father and He loves us so much, but He will also discipline us when we do wrong to hold us accountable.

That justice is final against sinners. That no matter how much you wail or cry the Lord will enact His justice against those who trespass against Him.

I think that this is any victim or survivors dream. Along with a good portion of humanity we ask for justice against those who do awful things to us. The Lord will get justice for us.

Our Lord is our father and even if He loves us, He will still discipline us when we do bad things.
Wow, does my reaction to my sin match His?? I wish I could be as appalled…He died for my sins, He took them that serious. Holy Spirit, help me to die daily, to my sin and self.

This is a 3-part question :)

Par 1: What is the difference between good and evil? In Amos 5:4-27, Evil as Systemic Oppression vs. Good as Public Justice. Evil is exploiting the vulnerable. Evil is defined as turning justice into “wormwood” (something bitter) and casting righteousness to the ground ( we see this now around us). Amos notes that trying to cover this up with beautiful religious festivals, singing, and sacrifices is meaningless. Good is active, societal justice, “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream”, to choose good means to establish justice in the public courts and protect the poor from exploitation. Now, if anybody ever questions why Christian should involve in politics? These verses have answered. To uphold justice in society, we need Christians who understand God’s laws to implement them into the laws of the land, the nation, and to have the people of the land practice them openly. In Jeremiah 22:3, Evil as doing darm vs. Good as Protecting the Powerless. In Philippians 4:8-9, Evil as toxic thinking vs. Good as virtuous excellence, Paul takes a more internal psychological behavioral approach to good and evil. Evil is what is false, dishonorable, and broken, and Paul says to completely avoid dwelling on those things that tear down the soul (as a man thinks, so is he). If one dwells on evil thoughts, rehearses in their mind, one will eventually do evil deeds. Input= thoughts, images that enter through the eyes, ears, with time to meditate will become a stronghold. Output= actions/ lifestyle. Good is a disciplined mind and an active lifestyle of virtue. Paul provides a checklist of what is good (whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise), he then tells the believers two things: think about these things (meditate on them), and practice them (follow the living example they saw in him).

Part 2. What is God’s reaction to what He hates? Righteous indignation, then deep grief and sorrow, separation and distancing, a call to repentance and transformation

Part 3. How does your own reaction to sin compare with His? I have been practicing to express these stages of reaction like GOD. But boy, culture has influenced me and I have to be mindful. What culture can program us to do: the rebranding of personal sin (re-invention of self, self-compassion, self-love, you do you, “your truth”), progressive living with modern virtues (greed is reframed as hustle culture, lust is self-expression, abortion is planned parenthood, my body my choice, my freedom to kill the child/ embryo/ a lump of cell). Authority is moved away from an external standard (God, Scripture, or biological nature) and given entirely to the individual’s internal desires and feelings. The highest moral duty is no longer to obey God’s laws, but to be true to yourself. How does culture really react to sin? Gossip, rumor, shunning, and public cancellation, driven by crowd psychology, based on flawed collective, societal norms. How God reacts? With patience, long suffering, inward motive seeking to see the underlying brokenness and the intent of the heart, grounded on absolute purity and perfect justice, open to reconciliation, waiting for repentance with the end-goal of restoration/ redemption, the outcast will be brought back to the fold, grace is extended with unearned forgiveness, absorbing the cost of that restoration. Human culture uses judgment to draw lines that divide people, isolating the offender to keep the community clean. God uses judgment to reveal the gap, then offers a bridge to close it. Modern culture fluctuates between total tolerance (excusability) and merciless condemnation (cancellation). God offers a radical third way: absolute truth about the weight of our sin, combined with absolute grace to forgive it.

Update on my children: the daughter who just moved back in with me found a job as a dental assistant with a dentist who was at our church’s summer festival. IDK if the dentist is a believer or not, but I’m hoping it will be a good fit for Becca, as the new boss is a woman and a pediatric dentist. There was a great deal of misogyny in the other practices she worked in before, and unspoken rules that my daughter didn’t understand. My college daughter has a summer job to keep her busy, and my son who lives in Texas has gotten 2 job offers in the last week. One he decided to turn down but the other looks like it has good potential for him, and he needs to move on. My daughter in NYC put an offer on an apartment and hopes to move by the time her current lease is up. So only my oldest, disabled son is really challenging me at the moment, calling me frequently (which I have learned when not to answer) and lying to me about what is happening in the care home he lives in. I know some of this is developmentally normal for him, but he never lied when he lived with me, so it’s driving me crazy. I need wisdom in how to deal with it lovingly. Probably. But not only do I not have room (one of my daughters just moved back home and into his old room, and I think he is having trouble adjusting to that), but I really need him to be in this situation. I’m 60, dealing with a great deal of my own trauma from an abusive marriage, and he and I just constantly talk about the things that trigger us both. We are both autistic, and too much togetherness is not good for either of us. Plus, I can’t leave him at home alone for any amount of time, partly because he is very vulnerable to abuse from strangers or his own poor judgment, and partly because he has intractable epilepsy. His seizures are well controlled for the most part, but we never know when there will be a breakthrough seizure. So he has to live with a caregiver. And he is with a wonderful young man close to his age—a situation he could possibly remain in for the rest of his life, and it’s almost impossible to find a young person so dedicated in this field. I don’t want him to be in a place where he has to transition living situations when I am completely incapacitated, and I don’t want his siblings bearing the full weight of the responsibility for him unless they so choose. So I know that I am doing the right thing by him, and deep down, I think he knows it, too, but the guilt trip is real. (The guilt is false, though. I know that.)

Logistical question for those who buy the reading guides: have you found any good pens/pencils/markers that write over the darker colored pages? I have tried yellow and white pencils and markers with some success. I borrowed a gold Sharpie, but it was barely visible on the darker pages of this current book. We have so many lovely volumes, but I love marking up the verses with my thoughts and insights, and sometimes it’s really hard to do on the darker colored pages, especially when they don’t leave a lighter panel for note-taking.
I agree Margaret. The books are beautiful, but I wish they wouldn’t use the dark background. I also like to mark them up. I have tried a yellow highlighter but it just doesn’t cut it.

Good morning ladies!! After today’s reflection I feel I am more tolerant of sin because I too am a sinner and I beg for forgiveness each day- yet I struggle to forgive deep hurts, I struggle to “live in such a way I can encourage others to live like me”(great reflection @SharonJerseyGirl), and I struggle to draw the line of condoning sin and rebuking because after all sin is sin right? Murder and white lies all nailed Jesus to the cross!! Prayers requested She’s! Sin- the thing that separates us from God- help me to seek God and live!!

I think today’s verses are a reminder that as a believer we can not
When we read the list of sins, we see the people had “flipped the script.” Instead of worshiping God exclusively, they worshiped others. Instead of loving others, they “treated the righteous like dirt.” (v. 7- NLT),
What did God think of this? He abhorred their behavior!
Does my reaction to sin align with God? I like to believe it does, but viewed from God’s perspective, I know there is room for improvement!

Excerpts of Notes from Warren Wiersbe NKJV Study Bible-
[Amos’s first plea urged the people to listen to the Word of God. The first step toward revival and returning to the Lord is to hear what God has to say to us from His Word. (Psalm 85:6-8).
Amos’s second plea was for the people to return to the Lord. To seek the Lord means first of all to change our thinking and abandon the vain thoughts that are directing our wayward lives. Disobedient children of God are thinking wrongly about God, sin, and life. They think God will always be there for them to turn to, but they forget that sinners reap what they sow. To walk “in the counsel of the ungodly” is folly indeed (Ps. 1:1), for it leads to a fruitless and joyless life. When we return to the Lord, we also change directions: We turn around and start to move in the right direction. It means forsaking sin and turning to the Lord for mercy and pardon.
Until we realize how heinous our sins are in the sight of God, we will never repent and cry out for mercy. To seek the Lord doesn’t mean simply running to God for help when our sins get us into trouble, although God will receive us if we’re sincere. It means loathing and despising the sin in our lives, turning from it, and seeking the fellowship of God and His cleansing.
Amos’s third plea urged the people to do what is good! To seek the Lord might appear difficult for some people, an intangible experience they can’t understand. Thus Amos brought the challenge down to practical, everyday life. He spoke about justice, righteousness, and the importance of telling the truth. He named the sins the people needed to forsake: accepting bribes, charging the poor exorbitant rents, living in luxury while the poor starved, and sustaining a crooked legal system. True repentance begins with naming sins and dealing with them one by one.
Seeking the good means rejecting the evil and not being ashamed to take our stand against what’s wrong.
v. 24- No matter how much religious activity we participate in, if we don’t love our brothers, sisters, and neighbors, we can’t honestly worship and serve the Lord.]

As I read Philippians 4:8-9, I ask myself – am I able to say, “whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me — put into practice”?? Paul lived his faith daily and in such away he could encourage others to follow his example. That is my desire, that is what I strive for…all to the glory of God, yet I feel that I fail so often. But every day is a new beginning and for that I am truly thankful for!

Philippians 4:8-9, “Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.”
Until I memorized Philippians 4:4-9, did I realize that that promise had a qualification.
The Lord will not tolerate evil and sin. It is darkness and destruction and we should not want this in our lives. One day last week I mentioned that I so quickly gloss over my sin and don’t take it as seriously as I should and I am reminded of that again as I read these passages today. It so greatly grieves the heart of God and it needs to do the same for me.
Seek the Lord and live….Pursue good and not evil so that you may live, and the Lord, the God of Armies, will be with you…pursue what is honorable, right, pure, praiseworthy.
Heavenly Father, keep me from darkness and the sin that so easily entangles. My hearts desire is to live for you, to seek you,to pursue you and abide in your presence. Show me your ways and lead my heart to you. Amen.✝️

Sisters, my injection treatment is scheduled for today around 3:30 (MST zone) Please pray that this treatment will not only stop any further growth or progression of the tumors but also eliviate my current symptoms, how unwell I’m feeling and things would improve in my body. Please pray against side effects. There is still some tests and some results we are awaiting so also please pray that as those are completed and come in quickly so things will become clearer and not so unknown. Q1 – God desires us to be merciful to others, to take care of the poor, the orphans, and the widows. To love and show kindness to others. Amos’s message mimics so many others. I didn’t realize how often the same idea is presented throughout the Bible. I was prompted to do a quick search.
1 Samuel 15:22 “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

Whew the conviction with the second part of question one. I hate sin and wish I could stop, but I’m comfortable with the sins I struggle with. I tell myself they aren’t as “bad” as other sin. Yet, to God there is no hierarchy of sin! They are all equally disobedient and wrong in His eyes. May my convictions grow stronger so that when I face temptation, I am able to turn away.
I heard the phrase “the sin of compromise and complacency.” It has really spoken to me and helped reframe my thoughts about my own sin, no matter how small.
I can really relate to what your thoughts about being too comfortable. Thank you for your honest.

God brings judgment to bear on evil in His world. Yet He shows mercy to those who turn from evil and follow His righteousness.

How does your own reaction to sin compare with His?

I, on the other hand, can be quick to join in with the evil around me. Like the Israelites who Amos was speaking to, I might do all the correct “Christian” things, but if my heart is not orientated toward God, then I am not honoring God, but annoying Him (5:21-23)!

Praying my heart will align with His more and more and “let justice flow like water, and righteousness, like an unfailing stream.”

How often are we seeking Him and how deeply? This verse is an incredible and welcome challenge for me today! ❤️Hannah C

’tis true, there is no other way to be, these verses truly bring you back to a place of kindness and love, GOD’S love!
GOD, truly and with falter loves us, and His desire is that we live in love with each other, to the best of our ability, we will not always get it right..

Whatever is true.. Speak truth, be true, know truth, one, a great start..

Whatever is honourable.. Be honest, live worthy of high respect, have strong moral principles..

Whatever is lovely.. Be a delight, bring warmth to any situation and be generous, no necessarily monetary, but your time and love.. I agree, may not be easy, sometimes.. BUT GOD, never stops..right?

Whatever is commendable.. Be that person, deserving of praise, not for you but for His Glory.. may your behaviour and actions always show a strong moral, GOD lead character..
