This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we move from the Pentateuch into the second section of the Old Testament, the Historical Books.

The Book of Ruth: The book of Ruth tells the story of a widowed Moabite woman named Ruth whose marriage to Boaz brought hope and a legacy to both herself and her widowed Israelite mother-in-law.

How Ruth Fits Into the Story: Ruth’s covenantal faithfulness to Naomi and to God showed that those who were not born as Israelites could, by faith, still become one of God’s people (Is 56:3–7). The book of Ruth demonstrates how the Lord shows His covenant faithfulness to His people, often in surprising ways. God’s provision for Ruth, an ancestor of David and Jesus, was also a provision for His people’s need for a king.

Reflection Questions:
1. How have you seen God meet your needs? How does God’s provision for you equip you to meet the needs of others?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

I have seen some God-given luck over the years, but I know my help will backfire as I am ignorant and I have learned that it’s better to watch others instead.

This book is beautiful. I was literally just discharged from the hospital and dwelling on God’s loving kindness today! God alone is worthy of all praise. He uses amoabite woman to be in the very line of Christ. Not even a Jew. God amazes me with so much of his beauty daily. May I continually bring him only the praise he deserves ❤️

I know it’s late in the day and most of you have already read everything here, so I’ll share again tomorrow!
Steve’s MRI showed no evidence of tumor!!
    We were astounded!
After it had grown so big in March and had to be removed in an almost emergency situation…and a month after that if was already growing back?! And now two months later, no evidence of disease!!
Yes, he endured 3 weeks of radiation to his brain, but I have to believe that the multitude of prayers that have been spoken over him are the key!! God heard our prayers ladies!!!
We just can hardly believe it!!
Now, Steve is not back to 100% by far. There is definite damage to his brain from all of this. His short term memory is not good. His reactions to problems is over the top (very quick temper). He is very unsteady on his feet even with a cane and falls easily if he doesn’t focus on picking up his feet.
But he is still with me!! At least for a bit longer anyway. So, now, to make the most of whatever days are left. We will be going back to Barnes Siteman Cancer Center every two months to have MRI’s just to catch it early when it does come back.
So thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your prayers!!!
Hugs to each one of you! ❤️

Yes, I can identify with not picking up my feet after back surgery. I still say to myself, “heel to toe, heel to toe!!”

I love the story of Ruth. When I look back on my life, I see God’s provision in so many ways. Usually, I don’t think I recognized it as God acting at the time. But looking back, His Hand was always on me.

Thank you to those who prayed for my knee surgery today. Unfortunately, due to late insurance approval, it was canceled and rescheduled for next Thursday, June 11. I’m going to trust there is a reason only God knows for the delay, and all will be well.

    Praying for all requests.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      I agree, Teresa! ❤

  7. Ellie Hines says:

The Lord will show His covenant faithfulness to His people in surprising ways that they would never would have expected. God as carried me through really hard seasons of my life through, hurt, sadness all of it He carried me. My list goes on and on how much He as carried me Christ has always held me in His arms I just didn’t know it. And Christ came through the line of Naomi, Ruth and including Boaz.

  8. Kira H. says:

Thinking about how God provides for me is reminding me of a sermon my pastor gave a few weeks ago. We are walking through the Lord’s prayer, and he was preaching on the verse that says, “Give me this day my daily bread.” We spent that morning reflecting on how Jesus means so much more with this simple phrase than just “bread.” Rather, He is pointing us towards all of the ways in which the Lord provides to even get that bread to our table in the first place. In modern America, that includes the growing the wheat (farmers, weather, supplies all play a role here), transforming the wheat into bread (proper equipment, additional ingredients, workers), transporting the bread to the store (trucks, highway infrastructure, governments that maintain said infrastructure), and then to have the means to purchase the bread (money, jobs, transporation). Too often it is easy to “see” the immediate fruit that is right in front of us without ever recognizing all of the provision that had to happen along the way to get us to that point.

Also, an update on Harper. Please continue to pray for pain relief. The doctors are happy with how her incision looks and her progress with PT, but she is still in a lot pain. Once the pain is under control, she will be able to come home – so please pray that her pain will subside and that she will be able to return home. Please also prayer for her older sister (who is 8) – she is having a really hard time with seeing her little sister hurting like this.

    1. Cee Gee says:

I am so sorry for that ongoing pain! Have they ruled out an issue from surgery or is the pain typical with that kind of suegery? I can’t imagine how stressful this must be for big sis! Praying tomorrow is a better day!!! ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

        agree. continued prayers!

      2. Kira H. says:

Thank you, Cee Gee! It seems like it is a typical level of pain, but I sure wish they would have prepared my sister for this so that she could have started preparing Harper beforehand. Poor kiddo just wants to know why she isn’t “fixed” yet…sigh… But she is able to pull herself up to sitting now without crying, and she was able to take some steps yesterday, so praise the Lord for progress even in the midst of the pain. COntinued prayers are appreciated!

  9. Traci Gendron says:

There are so many ways that God has carried me. The most obvious was through grief. But He carried me as a single mom providing much. The list goes on and on and I have to run.

Christ came through the line of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz.

  10. Tina Johnson says:

❤️ God is so SO good! What a reminder to read the book of Ruth. He provides and has plans for each of us. He is SO good!❤️

  11. Rhonda J says:

  12. Adrianne says:

    Reflection Questions:
    1. How have you seen God meet your needs? He gives me the word daily to keep me on track.

How does God’s provision for you equip you to meet the needs of others? By giving me clarity in what is real. And showing me that love and faith can not only help me but it does equip me to help others.

    2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption? That even in the bleakest of times there can be a miracle on the horizon. If it is what God wants for you, it will find you.

  13. Mari V says:

Good morning and Happy Wednesday. TWO more days before break and let me tell you all are ready especially the students. BUT grateful for my job and speaking of today’s story, my Jehovah Jireh, providing a way for me to take this break. I LOVE this BEAUTIFUL love story of Ruth and Boaz! I love how JESUS was in the midst of it all. Our Father God had a beautiful plan! NO matter what walk of life we have come from, JESUS offers forgiveness to ALL who will accept! I guess I answered question #2! AND as a single mom for the past 9 years, I’ve seen God provide for my kids (now adults) and I over and over. Some are miracle stories and I believe with all my heart it was my JESUS telling me (this once “afraid-of-her-own-shadow-women) that HE was going to take care of me and my kids. He’s yet to let us down! THIS equips me to be there for others, especially other mom’s and women who are walking the life I once walked and to know JESUS was with me all the way and will be with them. JESUS is my Kinsman Redeemer! My JESUS is the love of my life and right next to Him, Caleb and Alyssa. Speaking of Caleb and Alyssa, continued prayers for a job (and discernment) for Caleb. And same for Alyssa as she is applying for on-campus jobs at the University.

    1. Rhonda J says:

      (Heart!)

  14. Stephanie Brown says:

We serve an amazing God! He has provided for me in ways too numerous to count. I lift up His name glory in His good works. I cannot wait to see what else He has in store for me!!

  15. Rhonda J. says:

Who doesn’t love the book of Ruth! A story of sadness, hopelessness, and loss! But God! He already had the plan, working it all for the good of those who love him and called for his purposes!
Naomi first lost provision and they had to move to a different land just to eat. Then she lost her husband, grief. Next her two sons died. How sad to not just have one loss, but to lose all members of your family, tragedy. She had even given herself a different name Mara, meaning Bitter because Naomi means pleasant. Don’t we want to stay bitter when it looks like the world is against us, and it can destroy us–But God!
God had the provision of her daughter-in-law Ruth, and the Redeemer Boaz (foreshadowing Jesus!) Naomi had hope back! There was a way maker, miracle maker, light in the darkness when it looked like ashes and death of her life!
This is so good for today at our jail ministry. For the young lady I ask ya’ll to pray for. Her life is loss, shame and guilt, sadness and tragedy, and now consequence and prison. Will she find hope in Jesus? Will he make beauty from these ashes. Will he comfort her from her loss.
He never forsakes anyone that calls on his name and wants forgiveness and new life. It doesn’t matter how barren our land, he will make a garden. He makes dead bones come alive…in the name of Jesus! I have seen him do it for me, and many, many others. He is a healer. He is a Redeemer and restorer. Abundant in Mercy and Grace, wanting none to perish. Thank you Jesus!! But God!! Throughout the Bible those two words! (and Tina’s favorite)
So when we are faced with our trials, grief, sickness and disease (and deteriorating bodies!) remember..BUT God!
There is always LIGHT in the Darkness! Joy in the morning! We only have to let the peace of the Lord, that passes all understanding, reign over the anxiety and fear.

I have a new group starting on Saturday that the first week about growing our roots deep in God. That is how a firm foundation starts. It takes time to build the roots watering and fertilizing..by reading the word, praying, meditating on the word. But it also takes some winds (the afflictions and trials) to make the roots hold more firmly. So when stronger storms come we have firmer trunks.
Ruth was an Israelite from Bethelehem, her foundation and roots were in God. So even though she lamented she never abandoned her faith and saw God work through Boaz.
I pray my faith will be strong when troubles come. I may bend but won’t break! I may lament, but my trunk is firm, my roots deep. So when it’s hard, my roots are connected and I will see God work through our redeemer Jesus. I must give this hope to others. God gives us the people to share our stories with and to tangible help. Don’t waste it! We should always be ready to give our testimony! You have a Ruth story if you are a believer!
    Have a great Wednesday!

    1. Margaret W. says:

Actually, Ruth was a Moabite who married an Israelite from Bethlehem. She was, as it were, grafted into God’s family and became an ancestor of Jesus. What a redemption story!

  16. Mary says:

The story of redemption is not an accidental happy-ever-after. God is not surprised by anything in Ruth’s story, the Garden of Eden, or our stories.
God had prepared a redeemer for Naomi and Ruth, and He prepared a Redeemer for us. We are His rightful possession.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Wow, I love when people can say in 3 or 4 sentences what I try to say! lol. I am a Paul..round and round! :)
I could have just read this and said Amen!

  17. Lisa Anglin says:

One thing I’m learning from Ruth is that God’s provision is often seen more clearly in hindsight. There have been many times when He provided exactly what my family needed, even when I wasn’t sure how things would work out. Because of that, I want to be someone who notices and meets the needs of others.

Ruth’s story also reminds me that redemption is God’s story from beginning to end. He uses ordinary people, difficult circumstances, and unexpected relationships to accomplish His purposes and point us to Jesus.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes it’s so true. You don’t know how God is working in the present or how you will ever get through! But then you look back and see his hand through it all! (hopefully we don’t forget quickly like the Israelites! That’s why I have become a crazy journaling lady!)

  18. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

God’s redeeming love never, ever, ever grows old – nor does the story of Ruth, one of my all time favorites!
    .
In just seeing the production of Joshua yesterday and the Act that had the scene of the walls of Jericho tumbling down and Rahab’s life and family being spared …and today, the story of Ruth and Boaz. Boaz, who’s mother was Rahab – a former prostitute, paints the most wonderful picture and the power of God’s redeeming love. It also shows us that God can make beauty from ashes and make everything beautiful in His time! When God “remakes” a person – anything is possible!
    .
I am forever grateful that He saved me, and “remade” me!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh I would love to see a production like that! How do you always find these shows!

I have been wondering how Jonathan is doing, his heart? I remember my son after being broken up with after a 6 year relationship, and he didn’t have the wedding planned. I told him if he trusted God to heal, and that he would have something even better…and of course he does now! :) I pray Jonathan, in living with ya’ll, will think deeply upon life, and come back to what he knows—Jesus!

  19. Lesley Turner McMahon says:

This is my first time posting: thank you all for sharing your reflections. I have learned so much from each of you. Today’s reading has reminded me that the sadness, loneliness, and hopelessness are just feelings. God has a better plan for me, I just don’t see it yet. In the meantime, I am so grateful for all that God has done in my life. A posture of gratitude helps to overcome hard feelings.

    1. Darby Byrd says:

Hi Lesley, I’m sorry you’re going through those feelings right now. Thank you for commenting and sharing your insight. We are here for you!

    2. Eileen Dowd says:

Thank you Lesley for sharing your sweet heart. ❤️ your posting ministered to me this morning

    3. Laurel W says:

      Amen, Lesley!

    4. Rhonda J. says:

Amen Lesley, so glad you are here! Feelings come and go…but God, is steady and sure. Circumstances come and go…But God! Always the same!
Things can change in an instant! Yes, we think of bad when we say that! But you never know when something good can happen..such as finding out you’re gonna be a grandma or mother. Or running into your future husband. Or (lol) having the winning lotto ticket. Joy will come in the morning in other words! I remember my niece finding out she was pregnant from a one night stand and things looking so bleak and overwhelming. She is a half-empty kinda person so it was really hard to have her think positive…and PRAY! But she was married to a wonderful man (a friend at the time) by the next year!! So a year from now, life could be totally different in a good way! A baby can be formed and born in short (that can seem long…) 9 months. One moment not a parent..a year later holding a precious baby. I find that so hopeful! Jesus is our Living HOPE!

  20. Melissa Vandiver says:

The Lord has blessed my family financially this year, we are using it to be giving to others. God helped us the prior few years even when we had less.

  21. Stacy Graves says:

    ❤️

  22. Angelique Grobman says:

What is capturing my heart in the reading this morning is that it’s so much bigger than “me”.

God WILL provide and protect and restore, redeem “me”. But it’s so much more, His work is so much bigger than “me”!

God was at work in Naomi and Ruth’s dire situation and God was faithful and good and kind to them through it. But it wasn’t just about Naomi and Ruth, or Boaz. It’s about God, His plan, His provision His character His love for His people. His glory.

What a comfort to know, the struggles I face today are tiny in the grand plan of God for HIS people. HIS plan, is bigger than “me”.

  23. Tanya Evans says:

God has met my needs in many ways. There was long strench of my life when I didn’t have a job or I wasn’t making enough with my part time jobs that God manifested Himself. There would be refund checks in the mail or someone would invite me to lunch and give me a wad of cash.

God used Ruth. ” Ruth was not an Israelite but,God Reedemer Naomi’s family through her. God provided an heir and lasting legacy through Ruth’s connection toking David and Jesus Christ.

  24. Susan Burley says:

The story of Ruth and Naomi is such a beautiful story of God’s provision. I love that it highlights how widows are to be looked after in society! Watching my mother become a widow early on in her life really reminds me of how God calls us to love & support the people groups often overlooked by society: widows, orphans, and foreigners.

  25. Searching says:

The book of Ruth (worth the quick read in its entirety) is so emotional – the leaving from a familiar homeland, tragedy of loss, the love of letting go and the love of holding on, despondency, survival, provision, thankfulness, honesty, obedience, perhaps more love.
    .
I always love to read ch 4, where the skillful/clever Boaz revealed the land first to the closer relative and then separately revealed the obligation to Ruth – so it was clear the relative knew what he was turning down – and doing it in front of needed witnesses.
    .
Q1 agreeing with KELLY (NEO) that God meets our most vital needs every day, beginning with the air we breathe. It’s almost always easier to look back and see God’s hand in my life, rather than when it is happening. I can see His provision of protection in situations that were out of my control, provision of wisdom when I needed to make a decision without all the facts, provision of guidance that has kept me on the right path or turned me back toward it. Going back farther, I can look at the protection of my parents through various circumstances before they even met. Does this mean that my life has never had problems, tragedies, excruciatingly painful times of heartache and heartbreak? Absolutely not! There has been plenty of all that and then some, like most all of us. Yet, God has been there even when I couldn’t imagine that He was.
My experiences of God meeting my needs helps me understand, encourage and pray with/for others during times of need, and has allowed me to provide for others at various times over the years. Thankful for that, praying the Lord will nudge me when needed.
    .
Q2 Ruth’s life and legacy place another piece in the plan of Jesus’ birth, not only in the geneology but also in the redemption of both Ruth and Naomi, during a time and place of vulnerability. We are all vulnerable in this life, even when/especially if we think we have it all together and don’t need God’s help. Praying the lost and prodigals see their need for God. Thinking especially of a dear friend.
    .
Titus 2:13 “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”
    .
It Could Happen In A Moment (writer Joe E Parks Jr)
    .
    VERSE 1
It could happen in a moment, In the twinkling of an eye,
It could happen in a moment, He could break the Eastern sky,
Tho our hearts will feel unworthy, yet how happy we will be
When the Savior comes from heaven,
When His blessed face we see.
    .
    CHORUS
I am list’ning ev’ry moment for the mighty trumpet sound,
What a time we’ll have together when the saints shall leave the ground.
All our toiling will be over, all our sorrow and its pain,
It could happen in a moment, Jesus Christ could come again.
    .
    VERSE 2
It could happen in a moment, any minute of the day,
He could call us home to heaven, there forevermore to stay,
“Hold the fort” a little longer in your struggle over sin,
    Trust the great Commander’s promise:
    He will surely come again.
    .
    Prayer Request-
While out of town yesterday, CC, an older family friend, former pastor’s wife, had a terrible fall down nearly a full flight of stairs – not sure of all the injuries but know that her neck is broken – stable and alert as of last night. Praying as she goes through recovery far away from home as travel is restricted due to type of injury.
    .
Praying for those waiting for news today, having procedures today, dealing with complex circumstances.

    1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I am so sorry to hear about your friends fall. I will be praying for her travel home and for her recovery.

    2. Cee Gee says:

Your #1 response was so spot on! Every word deserves an amen! Thank you for writing all of that! ❤
Praying CC respinds quickly to the treatment provided; thankful she was alert and stable at last word. Remarkable considering the details of the fall!!! My mom fell late in life and broke her neck, but not down a flight of stairs!
      .
Also praying along with you for those mentioned. ❤
      .
I still have my sheet music from that song from when we sang it about 30 years ago! Great song! ❤

    3. AZ Walker says:

Thank you for sharing your heart Searching. I have similar thinking looking back on my life and I love the story of Ruth too because it’s filled with so much hope. Praying for your ex pastor’s wife’s recovery.

    4. Rhonda J. says:

How scary of a fall! praying for God to make a way for recovery and healing, and patience and trust, and faith it will require for her and family.

    5. Catherine McVey says:

Praying for your friend CC. How scary. ❤️

    6. Teresa Cooper Donley says:

Praying for CC to make a full recovery, have relief from pain, and feel God’s love surrounding her in unfamiliar places. Praying she can soon travel home.

  26. LaRae Taylor says:

    Amen

  27. Alana Anderson says:

    Amen❤️

  28. Tami says:

I’m going to try to answer on my own..#1 is easy, I have seen God meet my needs in too many ways to count. #2 – Redemption can come in ways we least expect it. Naomi’s life could have been over after her husband and sons died, a widow in a foreign land. No one could have predicted that Ruth would step in, nor that Boaz would then step up as her kinsman redeemer (a foreshadow of Christ). As I read the genealogy, I remembered that Rahab was King David’s great grandmother! So this plan had been set in motion many many years before. This just shows me how God’s plan is in everything and we need to trust in Him and not our circumstances. He ha a plan even if I don’t see it!
These lyrics came to mind. “How he Loves us” by Crowder
    He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
    When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me
And oh, how He loves us, oh
    Oh, how He loves us
    How He loves us all
And we are His portion, He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If His grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking
And Heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way
    He loves us

    1. Searching says:

One of my favorite songs ❤️

    2. Angelique Grobman says:

Amen, this stuck me this morning as well. In the midst of Naomi’s circumstances she needed God to provide and protect, and God did so, yet abundantly more than that. God was at work ordaining the eternal salvation of His people through Christ. He works all things together for the good of those who are called according to His purpose. Gods plan was greater than just redeeming Naomi and Ruth. Gods plan for us, is so much bigger than us!

    3. Cee Gee says:

Great song! I love singing that at church! ❤

  29. Cat-tee says:

God has provided for my needs in countless ways, and because of this I am equipped (with his help and guidance) to help others. One example is after traveling the road of a cancer diagnosis, surgery, treatments, and recovery, (and now 8 years cancer free – God is so good ❤️) I have been able to be an understanding help to others who have been or are now on that journey. I am also grateful to those God has sent who have been able to walk with me during the storms of my life. God always meets us where we are – we just need to trust in His love and His care for us ✝️

    1. Jane K says:

      God is so good!!

God truly changes ashes into beauty. I love the story of Ruth and Naomi. Have a wonderful Wednesday knowing God loves us and wants the very best for all of us. Help us to keep our eyes on him today, always trusting him and not our feelings which change like the direction of the wind.

Out of an overflow of abundance that the Lord gives to us, we too can give to others—not primarily material things, but spiritual; Grace, love, faithfulness, patience, kindness, etc. Praise God for how he cares for and provides for us, in salvation and daily needs day by day!

    1. Tami says:

  33. Kelly (NEO) says:

God meets my every need from the air I breathe to a roof over my head to clothes to cover me to the funds to buy food. I’m abundantly blessed and O so grateful.
God’s provision for me allows me to meet the needs of others through giving of money to my church and other charities and by showing hospitality in my home

I love the story of Ruth!
    Truly I do!
It’s my go to most nights when I can’t sleep!
    .
You know, to the question how have you seen God meet your needs? With my own eyes I have seen God change a situation that was not going well to going well. A season of fear move into ‘it is well’. A time of mourning into a time joy in the rememberance of what and who was.
I have been a recipient of His grace and mercy, love and hope so abundantly covered in His equipping on my journey, I have never been alone, though I often thought I was, He, on looking back, has always been with me.
The last chapter of Ruth always has my heart soaring. God never forgets us, not even in someone else’s story! Naomis came through Ruth’s faithfulness, hope and trust..
Both Naomi and Ruth were redeemed by Boaz.. their story changed from one of sadness, hopelessness, emptiness, to one filled with joy, provision, and fulfilment…
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
Through their line, amazingly, gave us the One who came to redeem ALL.. He took our debt, our mistakes and sins, and with arms stretched he carried them on the cross, so we would be redeemed and saved to do good works for His Glory.
    .
Our story of redemption began long long ago in the story of Ruth, and God has never changed, always the same yester, yesterday, today, and guess what, He will be the same tomorrow.. He loves us, oh how He loves us..
    .
    AMEN..
    .
A tad wet here but that does not stop the love covered prayers.. nor does it stop me sending love across the pond to each of you,
    Much love, always..❤️
