Those Who Are Blessed

Matthew 4:23-25, Matthew 5:1-12, 1 Samuel 2:6-10, Isaiah 61:1-3

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:23-25, Matthew 5:1-12, 1 Samuel 2:6-10, Isaiah 61:1-3

I grew up near the coast, so there are few things I love as much as an early morning on the beach. Yet only now that I’ve moved away am I struck each time I stand on the shoreline and take in the morning sun glittering across the water. How could I have forgotten the breathtaking beauty of a cloudless June morning?

Do you have something in your life that has become routine and familiar over time? If I’m being honest, this can happen when I come to Scripture. If we’ve made opening our Bibles a regular practice, over time we can begin to passively read passages that would have left the first hearers confounded, stunned, or overcome.

One of the practices that helps me as I read and hear familiar words—especially those from Jesus—is to engage all five senses and even a little imagination. Who was in the audience? What were they feeling? What had they experienced prior to this? What was the environment like? What might the sights and sounds have been? These kinds of questions can help us to be better readers of ancient texts that were not written to us but are indeed for us.

I found this helpful as I began studying the Beatitudes again—a familiar passage from the opening of Jesus’s longest and most famous sermon. I thought about the people sitting and learning on the mountainside that day, especially Jesus’s closest disciples. Was it hot and dusty? Were they weary from the good and hard work of ministering alongside Jesus? What kinds of loss had they each experienced? What miracles had they witnessed? What was it like to literally sit down with the rabbi Jesus and have Him turn the belief system of their world upside down?

I don’t know the answers to most of these questions, but I invite you to consider them still. (And I wish we could share a cup of coffee so I could hear your questions too!) As we study this passage—inviting the Holy Spirit to illuminate all our senses and wonder—we are reminded that Jesus didn’t deliver these words of wisdom and blessing to a nameless, faceless crowd. They were given so that men and women of every age and station and background would know that in His kingdom, He redefines what it means to be blessed. From the promise that the persecuted will receive the kingdom to the declaration that the humble will inherit the earth, Jesus’s kingdom blessings brought radical hope. Like standing on the coastline at sunrise, the Beatitudes remind me of the beauty of the gospel and fill me with awe once again.

The good news is that these words are as true for us today as they were for the first hearers and followers. God’s kingdom blessings are still extended to those who feel weary, forgotten, parched, empty, or full of sorrow. Wherever you are today, you’re invited to sit and meditate on these words from our Savior who delights in pouring out on us the blessings of His kingdom.

I love the idea of using the five senses and considering who all was hearing this message for the first time. When I first saw this scene in The Chosen, it really brought that to light for me. These were real people and Jesus knew many of them well. . And he knows me too. These words are for all of us. ❤️

Paying close attention to Jesus words and teaching puts you in a place of heart transformation and the opportunity to experience real change.

Jesus was teaching the disciples and those who would have a listening ear, about those who are truly blessed in the Kingdom of God and their reward for their condition and posture.

Jesus is still teaching and drawing us today. Gods Word is powerful and alive! It brings life and changes us. John 6:63 says that ‘ the words I speak to you are Spirit and Life.
They change us. They transform us. They reveal Jesus and His heart.

I love the Beatitudes. They show the amazing kindness and love of God. In each instance, those to be blessed are at one of the lowest points in their lives. And Jesus gives them/us exactly what they/we long for most. He does that for us today. No matter what I’m feeling each day and night, Jesus is there to give me what I need the most.

The verse in I Samuel 2:8 also spoke to me.
    “For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.”

Not “just” the earth, but its very foundations, belong to the Lord. And He set the world on those foundations. (I imagine the world as humanity, set upon the planet earth.) I thought about the pictures we’re seeing from the astronauts right now. The earth looks so beautiful. It’s this green and blue and brown sphere hanging there in space. We can’t see the foundations that it sets upon. But the Bible tells us they’re there. Those foundations are God’s. All of the universe is God’s. Every planet, every star, the sun, comets and asteroids, and all that black empty space, was created by God. And He placed each piece of it on foundations where they belonged. I am so amazed that He is not only the foundation that keeps the earth where it belongs without it spinning wildly into space. But He is my foundation, Who keeps me where I belong – in His loving care, granting me forgiveness through His Son, and giving me everything I need in just the way I need it. I can sleep in peace tonight knowing I am safe in His foundations.

Jesus, thank you that You are my foundation. The foundation that keeps me from spinning out of control. The foundation that holds strong, no matter the storms that come my way. Your foundaholds me, and blesses me with exactly what I need most no matter what comes.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified- Isaiah 61:3
This spoke to my heart today❤️. Praying for all those sisters waiting for marriage and children. May we always remember to praise Him, even in the waiting

“The word blessed in the Beatitudes signifies deep, joy-filled contentment and an inner state of spiritual well-being.” ~ from article shared below~

I thought this article might be helpful to our sisters who mentioned they are new to Bible study. This site has many articles on Bible questions. I haved used it for years.
    Site: gotquestions (org)

Copied and pasted from “got questions” website:
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount begins with the Beatitudes, a list of blessings that describe the inner character of those who are true servants of God and the kingdom of heaven. This teaching was part of Jesus Christ’s intensive discipleship training for His twelve chosen apostles. The fourth Beatitude states, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

The Beatitudes offer solid truths for living as a disciple of Christ. While each Beatitude can stand on its own, they aren’t merely a collection of unrelated statements. They are linked in an unbroken chain, each one building on the previous truth. The first several Beatitudes deal with the condition of the heart; the second set pertains to our relationship with the Lord; the final grouping treats our relationships with others.

Jesus always begins with the heart. When He pronounced a blessing on those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, He touched on the inner state of our hearts.

Drawing from Old Testament passages that describe the downtrodden and oppressed (Psalm 10:17–18; 74:21; 109:22; 140:12; Proverbs 15:15 Job 5:17; Isaiah 30:18), Jesus used language and concepts in the Beatitudes that were familiar to His audience (Psalm 1:1; 34:8; 65:4; 128:1; Proverbs 14:21). Those listening were living under the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire. They were experiencing excessive taxation, denied freedoms, and persecution. The servants of God’s kingdom desperately needed the heavenly perspective and hope of an eternal inheritance that Christ presented in the Beatitudes.
The word blessed in the Beatitudes signifies deep, joy-filled contentment and an inner state of spiritual well-being. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to possess an active spiritual longing: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:2; see also Psalm 63:1; 143:6; Amos 8:11). This desire is not passive; it is a fervent seeking. The servant who hungers and thirsts for righteousness is the same as the one who seeks God’s kingdom and His righteousness before and above everything else (Matthew 6:33). This servant is blessed because he or she experiences a satisfied heart. This servant can say, “It is well with my soul.”

Righteousness speaks of right relationship with God and with other people. The idea of right relationships with others forms the link in the chain to the next section of the Beatitudes, while right standing with God is His gift of salvation given through faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe in Him (Romans 3:22).

Luke’s rendering of the fourth Beatitude holds only the notion of hunger: “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied” (Luke 6:21). But Matthew’s report intensifies the desire for righteousness with the addition of thirst. Those who thirst for righteousness receive the water Jesus offered to the woman at the well: “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life” (John 4:14, NLT). The term filled or satisfied in the Beatitude means that the pangs of hunger and thirst will disappear. The verb is passive, indicating that God Himself will fulfill our intense desire for right relationship with Him. Salvation is His gift. We can’t earn it (Ephesians 2:8).

In summary, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled could be paraphrased as follows: “Deeply joyful and spiritually whole are those who actively seek right relationship with God and, in so doing, discover that He alone can completely save and satisfy their souls.” End or cooy/paste.

Seph Schlueter – Counting My Blessings (Lyric Video)
“God I’m still counting my blessings
All that You’ve done in my life
The more that I look in the details
The more of Your goodness I find
Father on this side of heaven
I know that I’ll run out of time
But I will keep counting my blessings
Knowing I can’t count that high”

  41. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

What a great example of showing mercy in 2 Samuel 2:4-7. David respected and honored King Saul even after he was hunted by him, and escaping being killed by him. Why? Because he was God’s anointed.
    .
This is a great lesson for me to show mercy and kindness to those who have hurt or wronged me. I hope I can be as gracious and merciful as David and as our Lord.

    Happy Belated Birthday CeeGee!

One of my prodigal sons (Jonathan) decided to come to the Easter service before I got a chance to invite him!

Praise – my new grand daughter (born 3/30/26) had all her tests come back normal. There was a concern with her irregular breathing, she also has a heart murmur but the Dr says that in 9 out of 10 babies that have it, it just goes away. Thank you Lord!

Please continue to pray that I get out of this spiritual funk I’m in, as Aimee D described it well – “walking in the wilderness.”

After a rainy, dreary Easter day – today the sun is shining. Have a blessed Monday She’s. ❤️

    1. Cee Gee says:

I love the thought of engaging my senses as I read, that first morning sunlight when you’re cold but the sun warms you from the inside, that’s a blessing.

    1. Amy Grendel says:

      Yes! A blessing!

  48. Maria B says:

Dear father, You are Risen Indeed! Our hearts rejoice with the miracle of the resurrection. As we start this new study, I pray that you do not let our hearts breed complacency at the words of Scripture— familiar words that we have read many times. I pray that as we read, we continue to pay attention to those moments when the Spirit nudges us reflect or to highlight something that You wants us to pay attention to. Thank you Father that in Your Word, we have a blueprint of a life that pleases you. May we all be attentive to it. Amen.

  49. Wendy B says:

Looking forward to this study. I really like the challenge to engage in the senses and this thought stood out to me as well because its so true and easy to just be routine…”If we’ve made opening our Bibles a regular practice, over time we can begin to passively read passages that would have left the first hearers confounded, stunned, or overcome.” It just reminds me how easy it is to overlook and skim over the magnitude and great message of hope, help, healing, forgiveness, salvation – the good news of great joy. It can really become all too familiar.

Lord, as we read your Word, give us fresh eyes, a clear mind, an open heart to really understand what you have for us. Remove the patterns that lead to complacency, checking boxes and renew a longing, hunger and desire to look for more. Help us to know you better and speak into our lives through your Word. To be in awe of your goodness, greatness, fullness, faithfulness and love and understand your heart to fully discover your ways and walk in the true, abundant blessings you have for us. Amen

    GM!
What a fabulous wkd I had! It started by saying yes, when I really, really didn’t want to. I went to homeless outreach b/c..well I had to! lol. I told my friend in charge, I would bring some goodie bags and the music and prayer table. Of course when I got there, God had already prepared divine meetings! These people are the definition of Poor in Spirit. Down, worn, tired, afflicted, have nothing. My friend Bobby, I had met when I first started going 4 years ago. I was nervous to talk to people but we connected. He was there yesterday, but having a rough time. I was able to encourage him and pray for him. He cried, I cried. I told him God sees him, and is working for him, when he acknowledged him as his Lord and Savior. I said one day in heaven we would see that moment of prayer.
Another lady was singing along with me, so I made talk with her. Her name is Ashley. She seemed okay, but when I started asking for what I could pray for..it all started coming out. She is oppressed heavily with addiction. We prayed Jesus’ powerful name to release all that. She cried and cried, and others came and prayed with us!! It was SO beautiful everyone laying hands on her. We told her God WOULD bless her. 2 Minutes later, someone looking for their lost wallet came through. She had found it. He was so happy and grateful that he gave her money! She was sobbing again and hugging him, and we were all amazed.
Oh how when we say yes, and go to the poor and hungry. Those in prison…being the hands and feet of Jesus!! We will be blessed, they will be blessed. I have seen this SO POWERFULLY in my life. There are so many broken people, and JESUS is truly the ONE thing that heals and gives freedom! But oh how we can be the person that gives a smile, a hug, a gift card, a hot meal and cold water. The jails and prisons need us.
I memorized the Beatitudes a few years ago, and say them often as I try to fall asleep. There is a great song by Pat Barett “This is the Kingdom!” that can help you memorize.
The rest of my wkd, I went to Easter Service on Sat and all Sunday morning. Greeting and Altar Prayer…It is so wonderful Praising, Worshipping and Praying with believers in Jesus..and new faces!! We had over 230 people in our overflow area!! Praise God! I prayed with a young couple with 2 kids that were first timers. Hallelujah!! God is doing a good move right now, the fields our ready for harvest!! What if…time is running out??! Would it change our motivation and eagerness!!? It is..lets get going!

This study reminded me so much of the book, The Doctrine of Eternal Rewards by Brandon Holthaus.

It’s such a powerful reminder that what we do for Christ now truly matters. Our obedience, our sacrifice, and even our suffering are not wasted. They are storing up eternal rewards in the Kingdom where we will one day rule and reign with Him.

Suffering well for Christ is only temporary… but what awaits us is eternal.

What a hope we have in Him.

      Amen, Kaeli!

Acts 26:18:… open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.

Jeremiah 31:16-17  But now this is what the Lord says: “Do not weep any longer, for I will reward you,” says the Lord. “Your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy.17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.“Your children will come again to their own land.”

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Michael and his girlfriend went to church yesterday! I was so happy to hear! I figured there would be an excuse, it is a good 45 minutes way out from where they live!

      1. Tami says:

Amen! PTL! I’m praying for more testimonies!!! Did they like it?

        1. Rhonda J says:

It is our old church, so yes, he loves going there. But he has only gone for Christmas and Easter since I moved away 6 years ago. (it is in the town we lived, but now he lives with his dad several towns away) When he missed at Christmas time I feared he was falling away, so it made my day that he went! But his gf is not really a Christian, so not sure of it all. I did get her a Christian journal at Christmas time, and she said she uses it everyday…SO maybe it is challenging her.

      Gina – Carolyn, Steven

    3. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

My son Jonathan came to church yesterday. He let me know during the week that he was coming by asking, “what time is church on Sunday?” At the dinner table yesterday I remarked how nice it was that he came without me having the chance to invite him. His reply, “I knew it would make mom happy if I went”. ❤️

      1. Indiana Elaine says:

It is a beginning! Thank you, Jesus!

      2. Cee Gee says:

    4. Cindy Jordan says:

Pls add our daughter and son-in-law, Toby and Clarissa. Two nieces that are dear to our hearts, Katie and Samantha

    5. Sandy Lynn says:

Tami thank you for this list of prodigals to pray over together. So grateful for the prodigals that went to church yesterday, mine included! My husband and I mentioned the time of the service we had planned to go to. It was the later one in hopes that he would join us. He did attend last year but I wasn’t sure he would this year. I prayed the entire time our pastor preached the gospel especially when he invited those who have turned away to be open to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to return. I know seeds were watered and I prayed they will blossom again. In God’s time. ❤️ He is faithful and long suffering. Keep praying for our prodigals!

    6. Kristy says:

      Praise God!

  58. Mari G says:

    Thank you Jesus!

  59. Kelly (NEO) says:

Just a quick update for those who have been praying for the missing teen from Long Island, Thomas Medlin.
His body was recovered from a river in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. Please prayfor his family’s grief.

    1. Tami Cutler says:

Kelly do you live on Long Island? We had the services for Thomas at our church.

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

I am so, so sorry to hear. I had kept checking online for a while and wasn’t finding updates. Thank you for letting us know. Prayers for his parents.

  60. LaRae Taylor says:

    Amen

  61. Jillian L says:

I’ve always wanted to be a wife and mother and at age 37 it feels like that hope is fleeting. I can get really down and depressed especially when I get another pregnancy announcement from friends. Lord continue to draw near to me and give me hope and trust in the plans you have over my life

    1. Kayla Bostwick says:

The Lord has had me walk a similar road. Praying that the Lord meets you with His presence and comfort, especially in the moments of aching and that He might work mightily in your life to fulfill those desires!

    2. Tanya Evans says:

You are not alone,Jillian. I took a book to some friends yesterday and their daughter was getting engaged and I got to meet her boyfriend who is a district attorney. Granted the daughter waited a long time! She is not a twenty year old.I am not quite sure if she has reached 40 but she is close.
I am waiting too. I don’t go on line and I am super cautious about putting myself out there.

      Your prayer was very encouraging.

    3. Debby Keiran says:

Keep praying and don’t lose hope. My best friend had that same wish and she was 40 when she married. Fast forward almost 20 years and she has two amazing sons

    4. Lanie H says:

prayers for all 3 of you

    5. Rhonda J. says:

I will add you to the list of our singles that are praying for spouse and kids. I kept hoping to make a list and put on our FB like we did for prodigals. But, honestly, I have been so busy with other stuff. Are you on our FB page? If anyone else would like to be added, please let us know.
Brings to mind Sarah H. I wonder how she is. And missing Taylor, Michelle P, Jen B. and Kimberly Z.

    6. Jane K says:

Praying, Jillian, that the Lord would give you the desires of your heart ❤️

    7. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Jillian my heart goes out to you. I have been praying for you for a long time and will continue. Keep on hoping and trusting. ❤️

      1. Jillian L says:

        Thank you so much!

  62. Samantha Johnson says:

I’m very excited to start this study of the beatitudes. As someone who came into Christianity as an adult, it’s something that is referred to a lot but never really talked about on a deeper level.
I’m so happy that I get to read through these passages and gain a deeper understanding of Jesus and our Lord.

    1. Tami says:

I also only came to Christ in my 40s and am excited too!

  63. Susan Burley says:

Love the challenge from Lindsey to really think of questions and engage with the senses! There are times when I rush through because I’ve woken up late or treat this a box to check off my to do list. Lord, help me to slow down and listen to You. Speak to us through Your scriptures! Amen.

    1. Danielle B says:

Susan, I too was caught by her questions. She’s so right sometimes we need to engage passages that are familiar in different ways.

    2. Jane K says:

Me too, Susan. I’m going to try and engage each day more and ask these questions.

    3. Tami says:

      Same here!

  64. Kelly (NEO) says:

Love the Beatitudes! Highly recommend watching/listening to the Bible Project’s videos/podcast on these verses as we move through this study. Maybe on our Grace Days?
    .
Jesus had been going all over Galilee preaching the good news of the kingdom, and now the crowds needed to understand how God’s kingdom was different than the kingdoms of the world.
    .
CEE GEE – thrilled yesterday was a blessing. You must have mentioned the date at some point in the last few years and I caught the post and wrote it down in my SRT notebook. “Rascal” LOL ❤️
    .
TS WOODRUFF – sorry that your daughter is believing the lies of the enemy. Praying she returns to the truth quickly.
    .
ADRIENNE – praying your son’s foot is healing quickly.
    .
SHARON JERSEY GIRL – praying Zab stays safe in his deployment.

    1. Jane K says:

Thanks Kelly for the idea of watching the Bible Project’s videos. Grace Day will be a perfect time.

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Thank you Kelly for your prayers, and also for suggesting The Bible Project.❤️

    3. Adrienne says:

Thank you, Kelly. He came to our house yesterday and was not using crutches. He has an appointment for a second opinion 4/24. (I thought a second opinion shoulda been earlier than that, but what do I know? Insert wacky face emoji.) He can put some weight on his foot and is wearing that big boot. He says it doesn’t hurt much at all. So , I’m praying that at his follow up it will be a “nothing to see here” moment. I hope it is not healing incorrectly…

  65. Daphine Jenkins says:

    Amen ❣️

  66. Aimee D-R says:

Amen. Lord I am walking through the wilderness, thank You that You are with me.

    1. Tami says:

I’m praying for you Aimee – the Lord sees you!

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Me to Aimee. Prayers for you. This children’s song just came to mind – “The Lord knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is follow.” …I never thought about or understood it’s meaning until just now. ❤️

      1. Krista Wallin says:

Thank you for sharing those song lyrics, Sharon! ❤️ Prayers for you, Aimee ❤️ I’m in the wilderness too right now.

  67. Kayla Simmons says:

God’s kingdom blessings are still for US!

  68. Pam Seipp says:

Felling blessed and comforted by God, this group adds another layer of comfort!

  69. Teresa B says:

Amen. I am in a season of sorrow and pleading with the Lord for His mercy and renewal in relationships.

  70. Alana Anderson says:

    Amen❤️

  71. Kim Davis says:

As we begin our study on the Beatitudes, one thing really stayed with me……

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

I was reminded that blessing isn’t about how things are going, but how close we are to the Lord. When we stay connected to Him and seek Him, that is a truly blessed life.

Excited to walk through this together. – KD

INDIANA ELAINE ❤️ praise the Lord for the work in your DIL’s life, and for setting a high bar for us all in praying for our prodigals. Praying your DIL will draw closer to the Lord and accept Jesus’ gift of salvation. How are you doing in recovery from shingles?

    1. Indiana Elaine says:

Bless you for remembering, Searching. They are almost gone. Thanking the Lord for a mild case and good medication!!❤️

  73. Searching says:

    Looking forward to this study!
