Jesus Displays His Glory

Open Your Bible

John 2:1-25, Psalm 104:14-15, Jeremiah 31:12-14

The word glory usually conjures up for me images that are high and lofty. I think of halos and shining lights, crowns and pageantry, pomp and circumstance. I think of champions receiving their medals and legends earning lifetime achievements.

Yet in the person of Jesus—the very Son of God made flesh—everything was different. His glory was displayed in ways that were counterintuitive to our understanding of fame and glory. He received a crown, but it was made of thorns. He had the praises of the people, but they quickly turned to reproach. He chose the most unlikely places and circumstances to put His glory on display.

It was in the midst of a rather ordinary wedding celebration that Jesus first displayed His glory in a public miracle. It was His mother who gave Him the nudge to do what only He could do. The wedding hosts had run out of wine. Mary probably didn’t want them to be embarrassed by this, so she went straight to the One who had unlimited resources. He didn’t gather the crowds. He simply told the servants to start filling jars with water.

Sometimes I go looking for God’s glory in high and lofty places. I wait for that experience in a church service that gives me goose bumps or some particularly holy moment. Yet I am reminded in this scene that even something as simple as water can testify to His glory, and any moment can be made holy in the hands of Jesus Christ.

Those in closest proximity to Him got to witness it. It was the servants, carrying that first glass of water-becoming-wine, who got the first glimpse of the miracle. Jesus didn’t stand up in the temple and perform. His glory was let loose right in the middle of a dinner party. Stone jars became holy vessels, and servants got the front row seat. None of it was the fanfare of royalty. In fact, most of the partygoers didn’t even know Jesus performed a miracle.

Of course, He was doing far more than making new wine. While the party guests and disciples certainly celebrated with glad hearts (Psalm 104:15), Jesus would soon reveal the ways that He had come to make all things new (Jeremiah 31:12–14).

Let’s not forget, however, that His miracles are never just for the sake of putting on a show. When God’s glory is revealed—either in grand and glorious ways or in the unassuming ways that are often His habit—it’s always to call people to believe and trust in Him. And that is exactly what the disciples did.

He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
—John 2:11

May this miracle foster in our hearts a posture of belief as we behold His glory revealed to us. After all, we await the even greater wedding feast when we will behold His glory in full (Revelation 19:6–9).

I love how Jesus was so not flashy. Even as His ministry progressed and His time drew closer to the end, everything He did was done in ways that show He was not here for any fame and fortune.

Such beauty in this first miracle. Something caught my eye in the teaching…Mary nudged Jesus. I realize it’s not about Mary’s nudging but Our Lord who acted. Yet it made me think of a mother’s role, nudging, encouraging. Not demanding but gentle. Like Jesus.

I dont know, but I like to think he wasn’t in any rush or panicky like I know I would be if I felt like what is happening is not okay, and I need to fix it.

  16. Mercy says:

“You cause the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth” (Psalm 104:14). When I was reading this verse, I felt so thankful to God about the plants, the tomato plants that I was harvesting 15 lbs of fruit from two small plants. The weather was getting cold and I was not sure if they would get mature fast enough before the first frost, I have been praying for warm weather to prolong, praise God at least half has matured in time. That is grace for me. I brought some in. Some are still green on the vine and I am waiting. I thought of other plants, the beautiful roses, hydrangea that brought joy to my heart, and the geraniums I potted to bring inside to overwinter, those are such simple joy that Psalm 104 described, in my humble perspective, and truly it brought me so much joy… indeed “to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread to strengthen man’s heart” (Psalm 105:15). All glory be to God. With the teacher strike taking place, my week has been a whirlwind. The kids are home and I am trying to balance work and to homeschool. My son did not cooperate at all. Like not at all! I would appreciate your prayers that he would study and focus, patience for everyone, for me. He is highly distracted, after my ADHD husband. I wanted to do math and readings with him, starting with Bible, some Genesis chapters this morning, but he just would not budge, all day he would not study. I don’t know how long this strike will take. I have so much respect for teachers. We miss them and I am sure they miss the kids. For now we live in the unknown. May the Lord give grace. Thank you for your prayers. Be blessed dear sisters.

    1. Brandi Haare says:

Praying for you and your family as well as the teachers and other students. Thank you for sharing. I loved reading about your plants and God’s care of them and you.

      1. Mercy says:

Thank you Brandi. So thoughtful of you.

  17. Indiana Elaine says:

I witnessed so many miracles during my recovery from back surgery. There were many prayers being offered on my behalf. I praise and thank God for each and every small miracle. The song, “Open Up the Heavens” by Vertical Worship comes to mind speaking of God’s glory.

    We’ve waited for this day
    “We’re gathered in your name
    Calling out to you
    Your glory like a fire
    Awakening desire
Will burn our hearts with truth
    You’re the reason we’re here
    You’re the reason we’re singing
    Open up the heavens
    We want to see you
    Open up the floodgates
    A mighty river
    Flowing from your heart
Filling every part of our praise
    Your presence in this place
    Your glory on our face
    We’re looking to the sky
    Descending like a cloud
    You’re standing with us now
    Lord, unveil our eyes
    You’re the reason we’re here
    You’re the reason we’re singing
    So open up the heavens
    We want to see you
    Open up the floodgates
    A mighty river
    Flowing from your heart
Filling every part of our praise
Yes, So open up the heavens
    We want to see you
    Open up the floodgates
    A mighty river
    Flowing from your heart
Filling every part of our praise
Show us, show us your glory
Show us, show us your power
Show us, show us your glory, Lord
Show us, show us your glory
Show us, show us your power
Show us, show us your glory, Lord
    We want to see you
We want to see you, open up the heavens
    We want to see you
    Open up the floodgates
    A mighty river
    Flowing from your heart
Filling every part of our praise. “

Isn’t our God amazing!! Sometimes we just need to pay more attention, than other times it is quite obvious! After my revision spinal surgery, they hit a nerve and my left leg didn’t move. Of course not much of me wanted to move. I clung to God those first few days. It was a miracle it moved one day on the second week with my walker!! Than another day the Dr said I could go home if I could lift my leg in bed…(which would have been impossible, it felt like led) and an angel literally picked it up!! I never forget the amazing things He did for me!! I rented a small bdg 3 months later for a training studio and opened it 2 months later. I could barely move BUT GOD!!! I was divorced and knew I had to forge a path myself! I was going to share some of this with you when you were going in…and thought, what are you thinking…wait till after Elaine’s surgery! I have had chronic pain since, but He gets me through! That was 21 years ago. I’m so thankful you are feeling good!

      1. Indiana Elaine says:

Our God is awesome! Sorry you are still dealing with so much pain. I sure do know the feeling of not being able to lift a leg. It felt like lead the first week. It’s still weak, but coming along. I walk our driveway with weights on my leg.

    2. Searching says:

Praising with you – awesome song!

    3. Cee Gee says:

Oh, I love that song! It’s been a while since we sang it in church, too. ❤

Do others see me radiant with joy? Do they see me being obedient to God? Am I willing to talk about and celebrate our wonderful God? To overturn the tables?
    ~
I could do better. We are witnesses to the miracles through God’s word. I need to share this wonderful news.

    1. Ariane Endsley says:

    2. Samantha M. says:

Yes! We should be strengthened by and radiant with joy! May we be unashamedly sold out to God, living lives marked by love.

Where do you watch Season 5? I was on the chosen app (on my tv, the app is built in for the programming) and season 5 has the lock icon, could not be accessed. Please show me where lol.

  21. Cindy Hanna says:

Yes Kelly (Neo)! The Bridegroom performs his first miracle at a wedding. How poignant is that! So many good takeaway observations today. From servants being in on the secret of where the wine came from to the quiet statement of Jesus knowing all men. Everything significant is powerfully presented in very understated ways. We too can accomplish much as we quietly but faithfully follow Jesus.

  22. Cheryl Blow says:

Wow! Everyone’s comments so uplifting! We serve a mighty God but He still cares about the simple needs!

We had a “glory” moment yesterday at the gym! A man with a walker was near by my husband and my husband struck a conversation with him. He shared how he had been in a motorcycle accident and the doctors didn’t give him any hope of waking again but he told them that they didn’t know who was in charge! He told the that his Lord Jesus Christ would heal him. He is getting stronger every day!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen! How horrible to be in motorcycle wreck. Praise God he can Heal!

  23. Ashley M. says:

Reading John 2 today, I loved how Jesus turned water into wine and cleared the temple. It reminded me that He doesn’t just fix what’s broken — He completely transforms things. He can take the ordinary stuff in our lives and turn it into something beautiful and full of joy

    .

  24. Margaret W. says:

The first sign included both water and wine—elements of the two sacraments which apply to all of us as believers. We enter God’s family through the waters of baptism, and we are saved by his blood, represented in the wine.

    1. Christina H. says:

I love that Margaret! The way God weaves His salvation story all throughout scripture is amazing. Thanks for pointing that out.

    2. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Great observation

    3. Mercy says:

      I love this! So deep.

      1. Samantha M. says:

        Agreed!

    4. Adrienne says:

      Good connection! ❤️

  25. Nichole Sells says:

Fabulous study today! It must have been so awesome to be one of his servants! Oh the honor to see the miracles of Jesus right there in front of you!

  26. Blessed Mama of 6 says:

Is the cleansing of the temple here in John the same as the accounts in the synoptic Gospels? If you compare the different accounts, there are some differences between this cleansing John talks about and the ones in the synoptic Gospels.
It could be possible that he cleaned the temple twice, once towards the beginning of his ministry and again and the end of his ministry.
I’ve seen arguments for both, and honestly I’m not sure which camp I would join, but wanted to see what you ladies thought as well.

    1. Margaret W. says:

I do know that this gospel was not written with an emphasis on chronological order.

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Thank you for posing the question Mama of 6! I hadn’t thought of it before but your question prompted me to dig deeper. And what I discovered – Jesus cleansed the temple on at least 2 occasions, one at the beginning of His ministry, and one right before His crucifixion.
      .
If you’d like to read the whole explanation, go to answers in genesis.

      1. Blessed Mama of 6 says:

Thank you, Margaret W. And Sharon Jersey Girl!

  27. Lehua K. says:

I think it was indeed timely that I opened this app instead of the Bible app this morning – they’re right next to each other on my phone screen.

Great to read through the comments and see some familiar names <3 I hope everyone is doing well.

It's beautiful to read about how God shows up in everyday life for His people, especially through Jesus' life while He was physically here on earth, and how it wasn't such a grand display all the time, but those close to Him witnessed it. How many miracles in my life have I overlooked because I was too focused on something else? Thank You Jesus for reminding me of Your miracles and to keep my eyes open for the blessings, no matter how seemingly small they are. Thank You for the blessings You bestow upon us to witness, and the blessings that are coming. In Jesus' name, amen <3

    1. Rhonda J says:

SO Good to “see” you Lehua!! Indeed, how many do we miss (we stare at our phone more than paying attention around us!) Satan uses distraction so easily today.

      1. Lehua K. says:

        Hi Rhonda!

I’m so glad to see updates to the app since I was last online here… that we can comment and reply easily to each other! I used to read along in my internet browser, but this is much easier!

        1. Rhonda J. says:

I KNOW! I am thrilled we can finally REPLY! The button that never worked button! lol. I still use my laptop! But so good your back! You have to give us an update on everything!

    2. Lynne from Alabama says:

Lehua, long time no see! Glad you are back!

    3. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

      Welcome back Lehua!

    4. Kelly (NEO) says:

Lehua K – so good to see yiur comment!

    5. Mercy says:

      Hi Lehua. Long time.

  28. Rachel in AL says:

When therefore he had risen from the dead the disciples remembered . . . and believed . . .

The disciples remembered this incident later and they believed again. I notice throughout the Bible, people are continually believing, and then, believing again. God is not a once and done God, He is the kind of guy who continuously provides proofs of His Love, who constantly is revealing, continues to give good gifts. The gardener does not water the garden once, He continues to water the garden steadily and with purpose.
Our side – We have to take up our Cross DAILY and follow Him. On his side, – His mercies are new every morning. What a relationship!
We don’t consider this as The King revealing His Glory, but it is how He chooses to operate. Oh, what a Savior!!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Love this! Important truth!

  29. Amy Zornow says:

  30. Wendy B says:

The ways God moves and works is a part of the everyday of our lives. Yes, the miracles happen as we read about in our passages today, but there is a humble quietness. At the wedding feast, He shows himself and the greatness of who He is in a very powerful way, but its quiet. Its not a “gather everyone around, stand and watch” kind of way. The servants are the ones to recognize what He has done. This is our precious Jesus. He just moves through his day, no pomp and circumstance; He simply interacts with the people and God’s power is displayed through Him. From the devotional: “I am reminded in this scene that even something as simple as water can testify to His glory, and any moment can be made holy in the hands of Jesus Christ.”
In both the everyday moments and the miracles, God’s mighty work is displayed and I am reminded that I should be lifting my highest praise – giving Him the honor and glory in it all. He shows himself faithful in every moment, His glory and goodness is always present.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Your thoughts are always so beautifully expressed! ❤

  31. Adrienne says:

I love how the reading from John opens with “On the third day…” Great and glorious things happen on the third day!
    .
And SIX (and not seven!)stone jars of water for Jewish purification. Coincidence that it is “incomplete”? I think not.
    .
John jumps around in his book. I wonder if he wrote about Passover and the temple courts early on because that really stood out in his head. Or perhaps that illustration was for our benefit and to really get our attention… interesting.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Good points Adrienne! I never thought about the SIX jars.

      1. Adrienne says:

Can’t take all the credit… I noticed it after listening to 1) the SRT podcast, or 2) The Bible Recap podcast. ❤️ But it really caught my attention!

  32. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Jesus, invited to a wedding – can you imagine having Him as a guest at your wedding?!!
    .
I love how this scene was played out on the episode of The Chosen. Not only did Jesus provide the best wine to be served to the guests, but He participated in the activities. I know it doesn’t say it in scripture and the show takes some liberties, but can’t you just imagine Jesus celebrating and dancing right along with the bride, the groom and the guests! I would think He’d be a very active participant.
    .
Jesus though He was fully God was fully man – He laughed, He enjoyed, He celebrated – He experienced what we experience. It makes Him far more relatable.
    .
The disciples getting to witness the glory reminded me of the Exodus 33:18, when Moses said to God, “Now show me your glory”…and God did.
    .
Oh what a mighty God we serve!

Two songs that came to mind, one Tina shared – Our God by Chris Tomlin. The other is, Show Me Your Glory by Third Day…

I caught a glimpse of Your splendor
In the corner of my eye
The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen

And it was like a flash of lightning
    Reflected off the sky
And I know I’ll never be the same

    Show me Your Glory
    Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
    Show me Your Glory
    Majesty shines about You
I can’t go on without You, Lord
When I climb down the mountain
And get back to my life

I won’t settle for ordinary things
    I’m gonna follow You forever
And for all of my days
I won’t rest ’til I see You again

    Show me Your Glory
    Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
    Show me Your Glory
    Majesty shines about You
I can’t go on without You, Lord

    Show me Your Glory
    (Show me Your Glory, Lord)
    Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
    Show me Your Glory
    (Show me Your Glory, Lord)

    Majesty shines about You
I can’t go on without You, Lord
    Show me Your Glory
    (Show me Your Glory, Lord)
    Show me Your Glory
    (Show me Your Glory, Lord)
    I can’t live without You

May we seek to see His glory today.

    1. Lehua K. says:

I love how this was portrayed in the Chosen as well!

Great song; have not heard it in a long time! ❤

  33. Maria B says:

I’ve always been struck by the wedding at Cana. When Jesus tells Mary that His time has not yet come, I’ve often wondered why then did He still perform the miracle if it wasn’t time? I’ve come to realize that His words weren’t just about the miracle itself, but about HOW and WHERE it was performed. Perhaps Mary expected something more public, but Jesus was following God’s timeline, and He gently reminded her of that.

Even so, out of respect for His mother, He performed the miracle—quietly, in private. I find it deeply encouraging, and so characteristic of Jesus, that His first miracle wasn’t done before kings or crowds, but for the most humble of people—the servants. Jesus consistently chooses those whom society overlooks, and that truth moves me every time.

    1. Sandi says:

Also this was the beginning of His earthly ministry

    2. Brenda P says:

Cool about Him performing it in front of servants. Also, Mary knew He could do this…….. how……had he tried something before, only it wasn’t recorded because it was in her home?

      1. Kari Jae says:

I’ve often wondered the same thing

  34. Sandi says:

I got saved 45 yesterday ago after reading this passage a about raising the temple after 3 days, meaning Christ’s resurrection. I just thought that was so neat. And I still do. I was so hungry for God’s word that I borrowed my friend’s study Bible to check out all the footnotes.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Praise God! I love that God opened your ears to hear that! The Holy Spirit pulling you to him!

  35. Tanya says:

Moshe in Exodus 33:18 asked G-d, ” Please, let me see your glory.”

I had a thought yesterday G- d showed Moshe his glory once when he placed him in the cleft of the rock and allowed him to see his back but not his face.
And again in the New Testament when he appeared with Elijah when Jesus was on the mount at the transfiguration!
    God answered his prayer twice.

I caught a glimpse of Your splendor
In the corner of my eye
The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen
And it was like a flash of lightning
    Reflected off the sky
And I know I’ll never be the same
    Show me Your Glory

I won’t rest ’til I see You again
    Show me Your Glory
    Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
    Show me Your Glory
    Majesty shines about You
I can’t go on without You, Lord
    No, no
    Show me Your Glory
    (Show me Your Glory, Lord)
    Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face

      Isn’t that neat!

    2. Rhonda J. says:

“Show me your Glory” is a great thing to pray every day!! Lord, we WANT to see your Glory, experience it and rejoice in it! Let us give YOU Glory in all we do with our time here on this earth Lord! Let my story BE your Glory!

  36. Dottie Bailey says:

I am new to the community and excited to dig into God’s Word with you ladies. I don’t have my book yet, but I listened to the podcast yesterday (wow, that was good!) and read the passage this morning. I loved that the servants were the first to see the miracle…I never noticed that before! Not the “important” or “powerful” people…the servants! That spoke to my heart.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Welcome Dottie Bailey! I still need to listen to the podcast!

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

      Welcome Dottie!

  37. Tanya says:

I really enjoy seeing the Bible come to life on the Chosen!

  38. Rhonda J. says:

All these wonderful incidences come alive in color to me in the TV show “The Chosen.” I love the visuals that the show gives me. The wedding is played out and Jesus clearing out the temple is a great scene. When we read through the chapters in the bible we go through these scenes in a few sentences, and we can read past them so quickly. I like to even get an idea what a wedding might have been like then. Bringing the temple into vision, as Jesus sees the disarray it has become, and why it would make him so angry, is good as well.

The miracles got peoples attention as we go along, but Jesus wanted their hearts and transformation. Same today! Jesus still does miracles, still is a healer making the lame walk, and the blind see. But the miracle of Salvation- eternal life with God in heaven, forgiven and free, made new, is what is the most important thing. He came to heal our heart, and to make a better way, to love others and share the light. Can you imagine the Jewish people had read about the Messiah their whole life and then he is there? Would I believe? Would I recognize him? A plain man in plain clothes? The disciples would not even fully get it, even after seeing the miracles, performing them themselves, being side by side by him. But after his death and resurrection, they were willing to spend their lives telling of him that we still read today. It’s just too good not to believe as they say!

I really enjoy seeing the Bible come to life on the Chosen!

    2. Kari Jae says:

I constantly marvel at how good God is, and how He can take our small offerings and turn them into something with worldwide impact! Dallas Jenkins (creator/director of The Chosen) is a friend of mine and years ago he asked me to come help him make a little short film for his churches Christmas service, which I did. We had no idea that God would take that little offering of a film and turn it into, the pilot episode for a show- The Chosen, that would have massive global impact! I often find myself nearly in tears when I hear stories or read comments like yours talking about the show’s impact on your life and your relationship with the Lord. I’m blown away by our God! ❤️

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Oh my gosh, that’s so cool you know him! I actually started listening to his “long-winded talks (lol)” videos from the beginning so know more than most about it! I remember him saying that that episode “under the tree” was somewhat based on his failure with that movie and his career!! Little did he know what God was going to do with his failure!!! They are good people, him and Amanda. (and I don’t even know them)

        1. Kari Jae says:

Yes, I adore them! That movie he’s talking about is actually a full length feature, “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone”. What we did was a short film that ended up being the very first episode of The Chosen, the Christmas episode. I was working crew with Dallas, but he insisted on getting me on camera, so I’m in the very first scene where the shepherds go to the well. :)

          1. Kari Jae says:

Actually, now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure the Christmas short film got rolled into the 1st Christmas special eventually; Christmas with The Chosen: Holy Night. Originally it was called The Shepherd, before The Chosen became a TV series.

Jesus honored His mother’s request, even though He said His hour had not yet come. But didn’t He already know He would do this? Or had God not yet revealed to Jesus (fully human, fully God) all the details of the day to day?
    .
Jesus gives us examples in these verses –
-honoring His mother’s (veiled) request (they’ve run out of wine & do whatever He says),
-providing a solution that was of quality and abundance (between 120 & 180 gallons of premium wine),
-assessing the situation of people using the temple (God’s house and His house as well) as a marketplace (can you imagine the chaos of the animals, the deal making of the sales (coming to mind is a carnival barker “step right up, have I got a deal for you”))
-taking the time to find appropriate cords and braiding them in preparation to clear out the interlopers rather than storming in without a plan (I’m reminded of Nehemiah stopping the selling and working on the Sabbath)
    .
Much to ponder in my actions and reactions with others.

His first miracle at a wedding. As the Bridegroom starts preparing for His Bride the Church, it seems like the perfect place to start.
    .
“My people will be satisfied with my goodness.” JER. 31:14
    .
    Rev. 19:6-9
Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

    “Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
    Fine linen, bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
    .
JANIFFER LEE – glad you were inspired to dig in.

This foot stomping, hand raising, heart beating song came to mind as I read through the study..
    Chris Tomlins ‘Our God’
    .
… Water You turned into wine
Opened the eyes of the blind
    There’s no one like You
    None like You
    Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
    There’s no one like You
    None like You
… Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God, You are higher than any other
Our God is healer, awesome in power
    Our God, our God
… Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
    There’s no one like You
    None like You
… Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God, You are higher than any other
Our God is healer, awesome in power
    Our God, our God
… And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us, what could stand against…
    .
He IS greater, though He came to be among us, teaching and preparing us. He IS stronger, though He was beaten, and suffered for our sins, though He took on, to the point of death on the cross our transgressions, our wrongs, our foolishness.
He IS higher, for sure far higher than we any of us here on earth will be, ever.
He IS Healer to those of us who have eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts opened and mouths to speak of His goodness, grace and mercy…
    .
His Glory is all around, if we just take a minute from time to time, pause, breathe and look up, down sideways.. it doesn’t matter, because His Glory can always, always be found, seen and beheld if we just open our eyes..
He is, after all, The King of Glory.. always for us..
    .
    BUT GOD.
    .
    Amen..
    .
Happy Wednesday you beauties.. Love, prayers, hope for you all..
    Much love,
    Tina ♥️
