The Word of God

John 1:1-28, Isaiah 55:10-11, Hebrews 1:1-4

I have loved the music of Harry Connick Jr. for more than twenty years. “We Are in Love” has been our song since Ryan and I were dating in high school, and so many others have been the soundtrack to our story over the years. From “Lofty’s Roach Soufflé” to “Bourbon Street Parade,” Harry’s musicianship has kept him at the tip-top of the list of concerts I’d love to one day attend.

For my birthday a few years back, my concert-going dream became a reality when Ryan surprised me with tickets to a Harry Connick Jr. show at an outdoor amphitheater just south of Nashville. We looked forward to it for months, but when the day finally arrived, a sudden-onset thunderstorm threatened to cancel the event altogether. We sat in our car outside the venue that night, waiting and hoping as the lightning crashed and the rain poured. More than an hour later, after the worst of the threat had passed and most of the concert goers had given up and headed home, we heard the update: “Harry wants to sing!” Braving the still-pouring rain, we ran from the car and found our seat among the remaining guests scattered sparsely throughout the amphitheater.

The opening number was spectacular, but it couldn’t prepare us for what happened next. “Assigned seating is out the window tonight, folks!” Harry announced. “Come on down, and let’s have a good time—I’m going to give you everything I’ve got!” Through the rain the remnant came, filing into seats we didn’t pay for at a show we didn’t think would happen, greeting each other with the same kindness we’d been shown by our generous host. In the middle of the storm, Harry beckoned us to “come and see” the good thing that was even better than we’d hoped it could be.

Friends, the book of John is your invitation to come and see Jesus—up close! John’s Gospel tells the story of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, showing Him to be the divine Son of God and compelling us to respond by putting our faith in Him. This reading plan will walk you through all twenty-one chapters over the course of five weeks, along with supplemental passages connecting your reading in John with the rest of Scripture.

John’s Gospel is an open door into the life-changing ministry and message of Jesus. We’ve all got seats we couldn’t pay for if we tried—all the more reason to make room for strangers and friends to join us! So invite a friend, and settle in. Let’s read the true story of the Son of God, and let’s be different because of it.

I had a really hard time reading John. I’m not sure if maybe each time I was trying too hard. But reading it and taking the time to understand this time was so much easier. I’m excited to go forward.

  6. Nichole Alley says:

Does anyone know why, in John 21, Jesus calls Peter ‘Simon’, and not Peter?

    1. Nelly Samone Saxton says:

Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter (Cephas in Aramaic) because he declared Peter would be the “rock” upon which the church would be built. This change, occurring after Peter’s confession that Jesus was the Son of God, was at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, signaling a new identity and mission for Peter as a foundational leader of the early Christian community.
His name was Simon when he was impulsive disciple. His name later changed to Peter as a new identity of stability, and solidity.

I’ve learned so much just in day one! I’m a new believer (9/23/25), and this is EXACTLY what I need! Is it ironic that the first three words of John are the same three words in Genesis? And to realize thst I CHOSE this family, unlike the one I was born into!!
I can’t wait to meet y’all and learn from you!

Good Evening SRT…. Glad to be back and follow along because I have the book. Praise God!

John the Baptist and the priests, levites, and Pharisees interacted with Jesus. John praised Jesus as the true Son of God, the true Messiah. The people in Bethany and those among the crowd didn’t recognize Jesus even though he was standing right among us.Jesus stood among them in the crowd (John 1:26; Mal 3:1) In today’s reading , there was an ‘I am’ statement by John the Baptist saying “ I am not the Messiah” (John 1:20) Jesus mission was stated in saying He was the true LIGHT. (John 1:9) and Jesus gives men power to become the Sons of God ( 1:12)

Good evening, ladies! I am new and still trying to figure the app out. I will listen to the podcast this week! I just finished day one. I didn’t have anything to write for who ahe interacted with or anything for the check all that applies section. I suppose it is because it is the opening of John?

    1. Searching says:

Yes, Brandi, we see the interaction in the next verses for Day 2. Welcome!

      1. Brandi Haare says:

Thank you so much! I felt like maybe I was missing something.

  64. Michelle P says:

Hi!! It’s been a minute since I’ve been on here. Have been doing my own studies. Sharon Jersey Girl messaged me and I figured I’d pop on to see what you all were studying— and what do you know it’s the Gospel of John! I was literally thinking about starting this book last night. Let me see if I can keep up with you guys on this one— :)

Miss you ladies! I’m so blessed to have some of you message me and check in on me here and there. I have been keeping some updated. I left the cafe end of August after the Lord prompted me (was about a month after the guy who had been harassing me left)… and actually started training as a server at a bar/restaurant today —- will see how that goes. Maybe a good time to start a new study.

    Love and hugs!

    1. Mary Dovel says:

Where do you message each other? I’m very new and looking forward to finding believer friends.

      1. Tami says:

Hi Mary! Welcome. We have a private FB group called SRT SHES. Join it and the questions to answer is what study we are currently doing. Can’t wait to meet you!

      2. Michelle P says:

Yes that page is helpful! I got connected thru that and also I shared my instagram page here at one point :) a bunch of us were trying to connect outside of the SRT platform for easier communication and to put faces to names!

    2. MARTHA HIX says:

        Welcome Carla!

  66. Margaret W. says:

I’d like to ask for prayer for those of you who are still checking today’s comments: I found out almost a week ago that the only way to fix what is wrong with my knee is to completely re-do the surgery. Take out the bad knee replacement and put in a new one. And the doctor who told me this only operates at the hospital where my disabled son was born—a clear case of medical malpractice. Even though it has been over 3 decades, there is no way I could ever have any procedure done in that hospital. If the doctor can’t operate at another facility, he will have to refer me to another doctor. And that news has really sent me into a tailspin. I have barely been functioning or able to get out of bed, I have been so depressed and discouraged. At first, I was excited that there might be a way out of the pain, but looking at starting over us terrifying when I consider all of the medical trauma I have been through in the past couple of years, plus my daughter’s accident digging up trauma from the divorce plus NC is already making Medicaid cuts in addition to whatever the Big Ugly Bill will do for the disabled (and everyone else who needs healthcare—which is everyone). It just never ends. I know I have a bigger safety net than most people do, but I also happen to care about a lot of people who don’t have that safety net. So yeah, I have been spiraling and too shut down to even come and ask for prayers until today. But I am grateful that you are all here.

    1. Sandy Lassiter says:

Praying now for you, Margaret ❤️

    2. Leanna Thompson says:

    4. A Walton says:

So sorry to hear you had sad news at the doctors. And it seems very difficult to figure out with not using that hospital (which I don’t blame you for). Praying you have the strength to do the next thing that needs to be done and that you remember God is with you. You aren’t alone.

    5. Wendy B says:

Oh Margaret. This is a very difficult and I’m sure extremely painful time for you. I’m sorry you are going through this. Praying ❤️

    6. Kari Jae says:

I second what the other ladies said and am praying for you ❤️

    7. Lynne from Alabama says:

Precious Margaret, I am praying strength, peace, and wisdom for you as you deal with this recent health crisis.

All creation is for us to learn
    To be together as one

The power lives inside of you and me
It’s the miracle we’re looking for
    Let us upon the door

There is something about rain that makes everything extra romantic for me lol. The feel of this whole devotional was just so sweet, cozy and impactful. Just like God rewards for those who waits for Him despite the storm, this is a big grace moment. I love this so much. Thank you to our beloved Raechel for sharing this. God meets us in different ways, like our TINA said ❤️, different avenues, the footprints of grace have met us in our wandering paths, in the concert despite the rain, through a smile of a stranger, a ride to go to church, an invitation to a Thanksgiving dinner, a Xmas play, whichever way He finds us, He pursues us and seeks us out from the goodness of His heart. He comes not to seek the righteous, but sinners. I love the ending too, short and sweet “let’s be different because of it’. Totally! Be blessed dear sisters.

  71. Adrienne says:

I just listened to the podcast for the week. Raechel, Amanda and Adie had so much to say. Their thoughts helped clarify a lot of the SRT readings and the Bible Recap ones. (The Bible Recap readings today were from John.)

I finally found the song I was thinking of named Come and See..it’s by Jeremy Rosado.

Come and see the promises He’s kept
    The grace in every step
The strength that came when I was weak
Come and see through all the deepest pain
    A life that’s been sustained
The way He’s made a way for me

    1. Cee Gee says:

Thanks, Rhonda! Never heard that before. Beautiful song! ❤

  85. Cindy Hanna says:

Welcome back Sarah Ritchie! I too love Raechel’s simple summary of today’s reading as being “Come and See”.
I have a subscription book and have often noticed that the book and our app readings are different translations. Not a problem as different translations often prompt a more thoughtful response from me. But it also means I end up focusing on a different aspect than the SRT group as a whole. Today I noticed in the book that John (the Baptist) responded to the question “who are you “ with “I am A voice in the desert” in contrast to the app which records it as “I am THE voice in the desert “. I admit that I got a little distracted thinking on this difference between “A” and “THE “. My mind works in strange ways at times.

    1. Tricia C says:

Hi Cindy. You can actually set your app to the version you would like. There are a few different ones to choose from. I hope that helps :)

Like Searching, I remember when I was about 12 or 13 and my mom studied John with a few other ladies. She came home the very first night after reading chapter 1 telling us how their study and discussion had opened her eyes. She had never connected the ‘in the beginning’ part before. Like SEARCHING said, once you see and believe v. 1, you can’t miss the plural pronouns in Genesis!
Looking forward to a few new aha moments as we study the book of John and connected readings.
    .
The song Great Are You Lord came to mind:

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore every heart that is broken
    And great are You, Lord
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only
    .
Let’s BREATHE IN LIFE, share life, light, love, and
POUR OUT PRAISE to Him as we study together! ❤
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

Glad you are back, Sarah! I am thinking of buying the book this time, too! ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, that would be good, I have never purchased a SRT book!!

      2. Traci Gendron says:

I have a subscription to the books and really enjoy them. I can underline and write notes. I have them on a shelf and one day hope to go back through them. It would be interesting to see how I’ve grown. Hoping so…

    2. Tricia C says:

      Welcome back Sarah!
I also but the book, actually started the subscription again, because I also have a difficult time on my phone and computer. I just didn’t seem to really go deeper with the Lord, as I should. I feel that is worth the money every month to really dig into God’s WORD and interact with His people.

    3. Searching says:

I subscribe to the digital books and find extras in every study that are always good.

    4. Kat D says:

SRT did a John study in January 2022.

  92. Adrienne says:

Come and see, indeed! As we start this new plan, I invited two friends to read with us. Who can you invite?
    .
His word (Jesus… THE word!) came to accomplish a purpose.
    .
    Mission accomplished!

    1. Adrienne says:

On another note… looks like some new She’s (and some new names commenting too)… welcome! ❤️

    2. Cee Gee says:

Come and see! Reminds of the line in the Chris Tomlin Christmas song, Noel: Come and see what God has done.

  93. Erica McCallie says:

It’s my first month reading with SRT! Really excited about starting.

    1. Kerry Rowley says:

Welcome Erica. Glad you are here!

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Welcome Erica – so good to have you here!

      1. Erica McCallie says:

        Thank you!

    3. Cee Gee says:

      Glad you are here, Erica!

    4. Tricia C says:

Welcome Erica! You will love this community. The discussion is great. It is great to get different perspectives from all of these Sisters.
      Be blessed with the WORD!

  94. Dusty Browning says:

  95. Wendy B says:

Oh…the book of John. The beginning verses of John are such a place to anchor. God is the beginning. Everything is in existence because of Him and nothing existes without Him. The magnitude of God is right there for us.
Another verse popped in my head as I was reading, Jer 33:3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ An invitation to further seek Him and look to know Him more. There may be a familiarity and maybe even a comfort in a New Testament book but there is always something new for me to learn.
Heavenly Father, we praise and thank you for your Word. You are the beginning, the end and everything in between. Thank you for sending your Son to dwell on earth and to lead the way to be our Savior. As we study these verses Lord, we call on you to open our eyes anew. Show us the great things we have yet to know. Give us a clear mind to understand. May our hearts be softened, open to be moved, changed and transformed. Have your way among us, encourage us and bless us as we study your Word and help us to know you in fresh new ways. Amen ✝️

So great to see new names in comments already first thing this morning. Welcome ladies. My Monday reminder is always to try to take the time to tune into the podcast this week. It is always a great addition to the study. Blessings on your day.

    1. Cee Gee says:

Agreeing with your prayer, Wendy! ❤

    2. Traci Gendron says:

      Beautiful prayer Wendy – Amen

  96. Gloria D says:

  98. Bre Figgins says:

  99. Rhonda J. says:

New Study! Always fresh anticipation! Although John has been read many times (I’m guessing even here at SRT we have done it before?), I look forward to studying it with you, my She’s, and hearing your wisdom!

Even that first paragraph is everything really, so important to “Christians.” Because as a Christian we believe Jesus is not just the Son of God, our Savior, but IS God. It wasn’t too long ago that my sister who is in the Mormon faith, was going to do the study of John and I thought, great, surely that will show that Jesus IS the word, and the word WAS God. They believe he is the Savior, but not deity. We can’t skip past this great, relevant passage. It changes everything of how we believe.

He is the great light, that penetrates the darkness. The name Jesus- is power, healing, truth. I think of the song that is a favorite right now- Mighty Name of Jesus by Hope Darst. And I Know A Name- Brandon Lake. I am so thankful that I KNOW the Name OF JESUS!!! Powerful and Mighty, Healing and Saving, a FRIEND and TRUSTWORTHY…redeeming and merciful. Restoring and Renewing. The name is power. The name is humble and loving.

Welcome old and new, young and not as young, baby and elder, a place of gathering to fellowship together and learn. To pray for each other on our walk.

    1. Adrienne says:

And… Rhonda made a special Facebook page… look for SRT SHE’S and answer the question posted to come in!! ❤️

    2. Diane Richardson says:

      Amen

    3. Cee Gee says:

      Amen! ❤

  100. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

    Good Monday morning She’s!
    .
I love the Old Testament, but it’s good to be back in “more familiar territory”. I am excited to revisit the book of John and be reminded of the precious gospel that was given.
    .
I also love how Raechel described this study as and invitation to come and see Jesus, it reminded me of the opening credits of The Chosen – when “Come and See” is floating all over the screen.
    .
Two verses that especially stood out – John 1:12 – a beautiful reminder that because I believed, because I received, I am a child of God!
    – John 1:14 – Jesus is full of grace and truth. The two work in tandem, they meld together and are perfectly balanced through Christ who embodies them. (got questions dot)
    .
    Grace = God’s unmerited favor
    Truth = His complete revelation

    Have a super blessed day!❤️

    1. Adrienne says:

And “grace upon grace” was back again today! ❤️

      1. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

        ❤️

      2. Wendy B says:

Yes! I was just thinking I had referred to grace upon grace last week and here it is again :)

      3. Margaret W. says:

But, I keep thinking, what IS “grace upon grace”? God’s grace is already perfect. What can be more? I don’t even know how to ask what exactly does it mean…

        1. Kat D says:

NIV says “receive one blessing after another.” Continuous grace or blessings appears to be what is meant.

    2. Cee Gee says:

      So good, Sharon! ❤

  101. Tanya says:

God is Jesus. Author J.D Walt says, “It is one to make the claim that Jesus is God. It strikes me as another to say God is Jesus.

    God is Jesus.

As the Nicene Creed, the consensus faith of the church at all times and in all places, has it:

God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.”

    God is Jesus!

  102. Stephanie Hendrix says:

I am truly excited to dive deep into the book of John and get better acquainted with the trinity.

  103. Nancy Davis says:

I’m so ready to see this book with fresh eyes and dive deep! I think of Steve Curtis Chapman’s song DIVE!

  104. Alexis Drumheller says:

Im excited to dive into this study!! Going to really try to make time for the word of God with this study!

  105. Esthera Cotoarba says:

“Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from His fullness” (John 1:16). I’m claiming and receiving this grace today. I’ve been so distracted, and exhausted and just not able to do anything, even spiritually lately. But I am answering Raechel’s invitation today, to read and receive and believe and be different because of the true story of Christ.

    1. Raquel Franco says:

I have felt the same as of late. Praying for us and anyone else struggling to receive His grace and regain strep from joy of the Lord.

    2. Tricia C says:

I also am right there with you Esthera. Claiming God’s grace and the Word.

    3. Mercy says:

Praying for distraction and exhaustion be removed, that you are set free to have energy and time to worship Him and study His Word.

  112. Karen Elizabeth says:

I really love the gospel of John. We’re going through this book of the Bible at church and going deeper in small groups (series just started last Sunday), so the Lord definitely wants to open my eyes and read it afresh this fall!

  113. Searching says:

The first 5 verses of John are so beautiful and clarifying of the never beginning, never ending existence of God and Christ. I don’t remember how old I was (maybe 30’s) when it clicked, but I read these verses and went straight to Genesis. I had previously breezed right over the Spirit of God as well as the repeated use of Us and Our, but once you can see it …wow. Thank you, Lord.

MARI V – ❤️ praying for your friend

    1. Cee Gee says:

You named two of my favorite songs! ❤ We haven’t sung either at church recently so thanks for bringing them to mind today.

  114. Kelly (NEO) says:

John 1:18 “No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side—he has revealed him.”
    .
Thank You Jesus for being willing to come and reveal the Father to us. May Your light shine on any darkness within us so that we may shine brighter for You!
    .
MARI V – praying for your friend to give the hurt to Jesus for healing and forgiveness.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Amen!❤

  115. Julia C says:

    John 1:14 (MSG)
“The Word became flesh and blood,
    and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out,
    true from start to finish.”

“If God has come to dwell among men by the Word made flesh, let us pitch our tents around this central tabernacle; do not let us live as if God were a long way off.” (Spurgeon)

    Happy Monday ❤️

    1. Kelly (NEO) says:

      Fantastic ❤️

    2. Amy Wood says:

Amen. Thank you for that quote from Spirgeon.

    3. Wendy B says:

      ❤️

    4. DW says:

Love that Spurgeon quote! Wrote that in my guide to be a reminder as we go through this study! ❤️

  116. Tina says:

Oleta Adams song.. Get here came to mind as I read Rachel’s words..
    .
You can reach me by railway
You can reach me by trailway
You can reach me on an airplane
You can reach me with your mind
You can reach me by caravan
Cross the desert like an Arab man

    [Chorus]
I don’t care how you get here
Just get here if you can..
    .
For us all the journey to Jesus is different. Yes, it may be some form of transportation :), or visualisation, realisation, a friend, a hymn that makes you want to know more, a gift of the most wonderful book ever written.. does it matter how we get to be in a relationship with Him.. Yes and No, we just need to know about HIM, be changed by HIM, be transformed by HIM..
The journey to Jesus, may have its ups and downs, may be fraught with sorrow and pain, it may cost more than you bargained, or thought, it may even turn your world upside down, separate the wheat from the chaff..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
Do we not owe it to Jesus to find out Who and Why He came to be our Saviour?
    .
So, I am going back to the beginning.. I am going to be reminded of who was the Word, and in whom all things were created. Through whom life came to being, and the light that shines in the darkness of our world.
    .
    Let’s go.
    .
May my ears and eyes be opened, and however I get to the little(or big) nuggets, LORD, I pray I give my life afresh..
    .
    Amen.
    .
It’s Monday, the sun is shining, it’s a tad fresh here..
Praying the Irish blessing over each of you as we begin a new week and study..
    .
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again(one day), may God hold you and yours in the palm of His hands.
    Much love, and warming hugs..
    .
    Tina. ❤️

    1. Julia C says:

      Amen and amen, Tina ❤️❤️❤️

    2. Kelly (NEO) says:

      1. Traci Gendron says:

I laughed out loud to your comment! But I agree – so good!

    8. Traci Gendron says:

I used to listen to this song by Oleta Adams often! So good. There is s song by Regina Belle, One Love. Her opening line is so good. How can you love me who you cannot see, and not love your brother who you see everyday.
      ~
And thank you for the Irish Prayer.

  117. Marcel Mendoza says:

    Come and see Jesus.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, Great simple words to start John..

come and see. It reminds me of a song that says that, buy I can’t recall who sings it and if that is the title. (too early for my brain)

      1. Leanna Thompson says:

Come and See by Jeremy Rosado but I think there’s another one.

        1. Leanna Thompson says:
