Open Your Bible

Genesis 15:1-6, Exodus 4:10-16, Deuteronomy 10:17-21, Matthew 14:22-32, John 20:24-29, 1 Corinthians 8:5-6, Revelation 17:14

Scripture Reading: Genesis 15:1-6, Exodus 4:10-16, Deuteronomy 10:17-21, Matthew 14:22-32, John 20:24-29, 1 Corinthians 8:5-6, Revelation 17:14

In this reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Each day, you’ll come here to read the description of the name we’re studying today and a brief explanation of how God’s character is seen through His name. (Remember that because the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, some of God’s names are written in the English form of His name from their original language.) You can then head to today’s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture.

LORD: A title of honor, respecting the authority and ruling power of God

In the Old Testament, adonay, or “lord,” was a common way to refer to God. It comes from the word used to describe human masters who ruled over servants. The Israelites used it verbally instead of pronouncing the name Yahweh, and it communicated their reverence for the Holy God of Israel as their ruler and ultimate authority. Adonay is a reminder that we serve a holy, sovereign God who is Lord over all.

Kurios, or “lord” in the New Testament, was used to show respect to people with authority, like emperors or masters. It is used to describe both God the Father and Jesus the Son in the New Testament. In the Gospels, Jesus’s followers called Him by this name as a sign of honor. In Paul’s letters, he used the word as a title for the risen Jesus. “Lord Jesus Christ” became a primary way to refer to Him, implying He shares the authority of the God of Israel. Kurios is a powerful name of honor for Jesus.

I am glad to hear you say what you said this morning. G-d is the Sovereign of the universe and I struggle with some of the flippant treatment of G-d. Cringe whenever I hear G-d ‘s name used with curse words. This is one of those times you want to say, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

  2. Cheryl Blow says:

Thank you everyone for the songs! Some I recognized and some I will look up! Songs speak to my heart!

I think when we grasp the greatness of God and Jesus, we begin to have a very healthy respect for the Creator of the universe! The fact that He stooped low to offer us a way to be in relationship with Him and Jesus came to endure the cross for us, I don’t see how I can do anything but praise Him and remain faithful even when it is hard! I do not deserve this gift of salvation but I do receive it for there is no other way I can go! I need Him every day!

Praying for all. For those of you with back pain! I’ve been struggling with mine and it is not chronic just tweaked! My heart goes out to you who have it all the time!

Praying for the young mama for everything to work out for her!

Praying for Seth, Gene, Victor, all of the prodigals, Levi, and all the others!

Have a blessed day! Keep posting! The Lord uses you to bring clarity and encouragement!

It is good to be reminded of this. Not that I really forget, moreso to be reminded that He is rightly placed as Lord, above all else. Yes, He is my friend but I think that the current church (in the general sense of the word) can too often want to make and paint the Lord as a best friend and forget to deem Him as having Lordship and authority. The beautiful respect and honor can be missed and I (we ) need to give our praise and honor in the manner in which it is due. He is Lord over all.

My Lord, my God, Adonay. You are the King of Kings. Mighty and Holy, Ruler over all. Amen

I like how in Genesis 15 that the LORD gave Abraham his covenant. The word of the LORD. LORD of all

  5. Rhonda J. says:

    GM!
Lord of lord, King of kings!
Both are Lord of all, the Father and the Son. Both to be praised above all! I can’t help but sing the popular song in early 00’s.

“Shout to the Lord” by Darlene Zschech
(starting at the chorus and second verse)

Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name
I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You

    My Jesus, my savior
Lord, there is none like You
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

You’re my comfort, You’re my shelter
You’re my tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
    Never cease to worship You

It would be like a 20 minute song as we would keep going..!

I love the scripture where Moses is like, why me Lord, I can’t speak well…and you want ME to speak to the king of Egypt?!! We often feel so inadequate to SPEAK either in bigger groups, to someone important, or even to say a prayer for someone. But God equips us and gives us what and how to say! I have had to live out this truth boldly over the last few years! And then to have the faith when the winds, waves, and storms are powerful! Will we keep our eyes on the One, Lord, that calms the oceans with one word! Thank you Lord! We love you. Everyone will know you are Lord one day, bowing to our knees, standing before you!

    1. Cheryl Blow says:

Thank you for reminding me of that song! I love it!

  7. Jennifer Jackson says:

These will make work against the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them because he is Lord (Adonay/Kurios) of lords and King of kings.

  8. Erica Chiarelli says:

To contrast these humans to our great Lord and God, wow. It’s humbling because I’ve doubted, I’ve asked God to use someone else, I’ve turned away, lost my focus, but He is faithful, He is good, He is Lord of lords. I’m so thankful we can know the God of the Universe! What an amazing privilege!

    1. Darby Byrd says:

      Amen Erica

  9. LaRae Taylor says:

    Love that song!! Adoni

Father You are my Lord and of heaven and earth. Help me to remember You have it all in the palm of your hand. ❤️

  10. Tanya says:

    Good morning, She’s
This morning I am just going to sing to the Lord . Will you join me in song!

    El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
    El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You’re still the same,
By the power of the name.
    El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
    Erkamka na Adonai,
*we will praise and lift you high*,
    El shaddai

Through your love and through the ram,
    You saved the son of Abraham;
Through the power of your hand,
Turned the sea into dry land.
To the outcast on her knees,
You were the God who really sees,
    And by Your might,
    You set Your children free.

    El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
    El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You’re still the same,
By the power of the name.
    El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
    Erkamka na Adonai,
*we will praise and lift you high*,
    El Shaddai.

Through the years You’ve made it clear,
That the time of Christ was near,
    Though the people couldn’t see
    What Messiah ought to be.
Though Your Word contained the plan,
    They just could not understand
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of Your Son.

    1. Sandi says:

Age to age you’re still the same by the power of your name

    2. Wendy B says:

      Amen! ❤️

  11. Kimberly says:

My Lord and my God, (Kyrios Theos)
I come to You with a heart that longs to know You more.
In my doubt, show me Your truth.
    In my fear, speak peace.
In my weakness, be my strength.
You are my Savior, my King, and my constant help.
I believe — help my unbelief.
Today, I surrender all that I am to You.
    Be glorified in my life.
My Lord and my God, I trust You.
    Amen.

    1. Wendy B says:

      Amen ❤️

  12. Danielle B says:

Oh Adonay what an encouragement to be reminded in a name who is in control. Adonay May you continue to be the ruler of my life. May I lay down where I try to control.

  13. Karen Elizabeth says:

My dad is a pastor. One thing he sometimes refers to is that often people want to think of God as a father and friend, but deny him as their Lord, master and ruler of their lives. That’s where change occurs. God as Lord means there needs to be a response from us, our submission and obedience to God’s will over our lives.

    1. Darby Byrd says:

Wow this is true. Thank you for sharing

    2. Tanya says:

      ❤️

  14. Searching says:

I see Abram questioning, Moses’ disbelief, Peter losing focus and Thomas doubting our Lord God/our Lord Jesus Christ. I have been them many times. Lord, help me keep my eyes, heart and mind on You, Lord of all.
I love this from 1 Corinthians 8:6, one God, the Father, of whom are all things and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

    1. Wendy B says:

      Yes! :)

    2. Rachel says:

The other day I heard someone (I think it was Allie Beth Stuckey) say that empathy is often the enemy of discernment. It seems that this could be at least some of what we are seeing in the young people walking away from their faith. They *seem* to be grounded in truth, but when that contradicts how/what their friends are feeling/experiencing, the shallow nature of their theology is revealed as they choose feelings over truth. It is tragic and heartbreaking. But God! It is not hopeless!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes, spot on Rachael! I like Ally! She has been a great voice for such a time as this!

    3. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

  15. Aimee D-R says:

  16. Kelly (NEO) says:

    Adonai by Avolon Lyrics
    One single drop of rain
Your salty tear became blue ocean
    One tiny grain of sand
Turning in your hand a world in motion
You’re out beyond the furthest Morning Star
Close enough to hold me in Your arms
    .
    Adonai
I lift up my heart and I cry
    My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
    Oh, my Adonai
    .
    One timid faithful knock
Resounds upon the Rock of Ages
    One trembling heart and soul
Becomes a servant bold and courageous
You call across the mountains and the seas
I answer from the deepest part of me
    .
    Adonai
I lift up my heart and I cry
    My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Father of my hope and freedom
    Oh, my Adonai
    .
Oh, from age to age you reign in Majesty
And today You’re making miracles in me
    .
    Adonai
I lift up my heart and I cry
    My Adonai
You are the Maker of each moment
Oh, Father of my hope and freedom
    Oh, my Adonai

I am so praying that our earnest prayers for this momma come to fruition..TODAY! Lord, let the news come, that she can have a place for her and baby and know that even though it’s not easy, faith is to keep on in petition and supplication, and you are working it on your time not ours! May she turn her eyes to you through all the storms and know that you will see her through!! In Jesus’ name!!

    2. Sharon Jersey Girl says:

Praying along with you for your young mama – may it happen today!

  17. Lucille Prosser says:

He is the ultimate authority! Therefore, God elevated him to the highest form of honor and gave him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.”

    Lord you have my heart
And I will search for yours
Jesus take my life and lead me on.
    .
    Lord you have my heart
And I will search for yours
Let me be to you a sacrifice.

(Men) And as you show your face
    (Ladies) Show your face
(Together) We’ll see your glory here.
