God Is Good

Exodus 33:17-23, 1 Chronicles 16:34-36, Psalm 119:68, John 10:1-18, John 10:25-39, Matthew 7:7-11, 2 Peter 1:3-4

Scripture Reading: Exodus 33:17-23, 1 Chronicles 16:34-36, Psalm 119:68, John 10:1-18, John 10:25-39, Matthew 7:7-11, 2 Peter 1:3-4

To say God is good speaks directly to His personal character, to the overflow of His heart—and to who He is in relationship to us. He is never absent, disinterested, careless, ill-tempered, petty, spiteful, or mean. He is set apart from all evil and does what is right, faithful, kind, and true. Always.

True goodness is defined by who God is. He doesn’t just do good; He is good. In Psalm 119:68, the psalmist prays, “You are good, and you do what is good; teach me your statutes.” A key to understanding the goodness of God is learning who He is through His Word. If we don’t learn His statutes, we will bring our own definitions and impose them on God. And when He doesn’t do what we think He should, we will accuse Him of failing to be “good” by our own standards—not His.

In His goodness, God is our ultimate provider. If we ask for bread, He will not give us a harmful serpent or a useless stone; He will give us what we need (Luke 11:11; Matthew 7:9–11). God’s character defines what is good, something neither we nor our circumstances can do. Our viewpoint will always be limited as to what is good, but God’s never is. The effects of sin in the world never compromise God’s goodness either—when life feels like it’s all bad, God is still entirely good.

He does good because He is good. In all ways and in all things, God is good.

I like the part about not imposing our definition of his statutes on him. He is bigger than our feeble minds can comprehend.

I realized today that even when life is hard, when prayers feel unanswered or people disappoint me, God’s goodness hasn’t gone anywhere. He’s still the same Shepherd. Still the same Father who gives good gifts. Still the same God who whispers, “Nothing can snatch you from My hand.” Maybe the most healing truth of all is that God’s goodness doesn’t depend on my circumstances. It’s who He is. And I can trust that ❤️

Thank you Lord for this reminder, that the solutions to living life on earth have been given for us in regards to all things hard or easy. You know our needs and struggles before we even lift them up to You. Give us wisdom to understand. Let your joy be our strength that no thief can come and steal that away. Have a blessed Friday dear shes.

“…..He is never petty, spiteful or mean. “Our viewpoint will always be limited as to what is good, but God’s never is. …”when life feel like it’s all bad, God is STILL entirely good.” LOVE THIS! Thank for for OUR God who is not petty, spiteful or mean! Even when life is hard as we live in this fallen world with fallen people “like me,” OUR God remains good! This devo was so UPLIFTING this morning! I’m up later as we have a teacher-in-service day with no students. We are having a Award/Fun day for all staff including celebrating those of us who have been here 15 years! God is good So grateful that He has giving me the honor to work at such great school!

  15. Cheryl Blow says:

His is good! This has been the theme of my life lately! Not because everything is all sunshine and roses but because even in troubles and I cry out to Him, He is always there! When I feel troubled but don’t know why, I just talk to Him about it and He lifts me up! I am a sinner saved by grace who is still a long way from where I need to be but God hears, loves me, is faithful and true, and He is good! Not because He gives me everything but because He gave His only son for me, a big old rotten sinner and cleaned me up, and set my feet on solid ground! HE IS GOD AND HE IS GOOD! I can never stop praising Him!

What a good reminder that God is always good. So often I look at my circumstances and judge God by that. How wrong of me to question that.

“Our viewpoint will always be limited as to what is good, but God’s never is….when life feels like it’s all bad, God is still entirely good.”
Oh, how I needed to hear these words this morning. Amplified by the scripture lessons. Especially Matthew 7: 11. “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.”
I have been feeling “out of true” lately. Miscommunications with friends.
    Concerns about health.
    Troubles portrayed by the news.
    Sinking into a quiet despair.
I pray to the One who hears all, knows all, is all, for rescue & release. As only He can. As only He will.
I pray also for others who may similarly feel as though they are standing on “shifting sands”. May we hold firm as in James, to “every good gift coming down in lights from above”.
Pray with me, my sisters in Christ.

    Show Me Your Goodness
    (A Prayer)

Lord, some days I rush right past
The quiet ways Your blessings last.
In noise and worry, I can’t always see
The gentle ways You care for me.

But I believe You’re always near—
In joy, in sorrow, in every fear.
So open my eyes to what is true:
That every good thing comes from You.

In moments when I feel alone,
Or when the path ahead’s unknown,
Remind me, Lord, You’re still the same—
    Steadfast love, a faithful name.

Help me notice Your steady grace
In every tear, in every place.
When I forget or start to doubt,
Please draw my wandering heart back out.

You are good—and You are kind.
Let that truth stay on my mind.
Each day I live, may I see
Your goodness walking close with me.

    Amen.

  21. Wendy B says:

The phrase God is good deeply resonates with me and this quote from the devotional gives words to my thoughts: “In Psalm 119:68, the psalmist prays, “You are good, and you do what is good; teach me your statutes.” A key to understanding the goodness of God is learning who He is through His Word. If we don’t learn His statutes, we will bring our own definitions and impose them on God. And when He doesn’t do what we think He should, we will accuse Him of failing to be “good” by our own standards—not His.”
I strongly believe that one of the reasons I survived a life threatening health crisis and near death experience is because I had my heart, mind and soul deeply vested in cultivating an intentional relationship with my Savior. Please hear my heart when I say this. It is not to say I have it all figured out, have a perfect walk with Jesus or I’m some super Christian because that is definitely the case. However, I do know that because I had prioritized my relationship, studying, praying, reading, having had solid, truthful teaching in my life, I did not doubt the very goodness of who God. I think when we know that, it changes everything when we are faced with the unthinkable, the crisis, the unknown, the grief, the heartache – whatever it is. I trusted my Heavenly Father. I had questions, boy did I have questions, but I did not question God because I was certain that His Word was true. I was certain that everything I knew about God was true – that all these attributes we have studied the last 2 weeks were true and I knew them not because someone told me I should, but because I learned and discovered it for myself. Funny, how its also how I realized that the more I know, the less I actually really know of our awesome indescribable God. Ladies, I can not say it enough, you will never be time better spent, than knowing Jesus. Reading the Word – the whole Bible, meditating on it, studying scripture. Cultivate the Truth of God’s Word into the soil of your heart. Be in a church community where your Pastor preaches the Word and upholds it in high regard(not just a faith based TED talk to make you feel better every week). Seek out iron sharpens iron relationships, that keep you challenged, accountable and encouraged. Recount God’s faithfulness in your life. The time showing up here in the SRT community is not wasted. In different seasons of our lives, how this looks changes and we may have to adapt but putting God first just cannot change. We have to keep investing in growing and maturing in relationship and fellowship with Jesus so we can truly know that God is good all the time and all the time God is good. In my experience, there was no room for doubt because the truth of the goodness of God was etched on my heart❤️

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen..I have this same passion- to implore people to read the word…for it is the only way to truly know the truths of our God (as much as we can), and to be with him. I encounter so many that do not ever read the Bible on their own (I was one!) and since I started that journey 11 years ago…it brings and continues to bring about something so indescribably beautiful! We are not saying it from a “scolding” place but a “you will be tremendously blessed” imploring!! Because really, it is not optional for someone seeking God and living for him!
I feel the same about praying and testimonies! I have decided to focus on Practicing Prayer this summer session to actually praying outloud…lol, and Testing Testimonies this fall from yours or someone else’s class! (That was you, right?? lol
Always love you heart, insights and wisdom Wendy! Thank you for sharing!

    2. Christy says:

      So beautifully said, Wendy ❤️

    6. Lena Sorensen says:

Thank you Wendy. His Word is life and Truth. When we read and pray it goes deep into our hearts. What a good God we serve. A mystery that He is unveiling to us. ♥️God is so good all the time and all the time God is good.

  22. Kimberly says:

From these verses, we learn that God’s goodness is:

    Holy and glorious (Exodus 33)
Eternal and praiseworthy (1 Chronicles 16)
Inherent to His nature (Psalm 119)
Personal, sacrificial, and protective (John 10)
    Generous and fatherly (Matthew 7)
    Empowering and promise-keeping (2 Peter 1)

    1. Laurel W says:

Perfectly stated/summarized. Thank you for sharing.

God is good to the very core of who He is! He is good no matter the circumstance. He is good all the time! Praying for your requests! // Seth update: Thank you for your continued prayers. The MRI was very helpful in providing answers. He has a level 2 out of 4 brain injury which was better than the doctors anticipated. The MRI showed that the part of the brain that connects the left to the right was damaged, so that explains why he hasn’t woken up yet despite lack of sedation. While he may not be able to be a world champion swing dancer again, he should be able to dance again in some capacity. It will be a long road ahead, but myself & his family are choosing to trust that God has a plan and that He is Jehovah Rapha, our Healer!!

  25. Rhonda J. says:

God is good, God is great! Thankful this is on of the first prayers we teach kids and I learned as a child. To know…KNOW that He is good is foundational. Yet, like someone said, so many people blame God for the evil in the world, and people’s actions. We want Him to make all things right and good, but live our life independent of him.
His is good, he is great. He is always guiding me and protecting me, walking beside me, he has put in my heart his goodness. Why do I falter so much? Why do bad dreams come at night? Why does my marriage take so much work to be good? Because I am on a journey, I hard fought journey that is for my own good. To make me more like Jesus. Everything is working for the good of those (THAT LOVE HIM…lets not forget the end!)
Lord, help us to seek you in all our ways, every day, every minute. I want to know your goodness. In our suffering, let us know it is for our good, in our afflictions- for our good. In our trauma, hurts, and wrongful accusations- our good.
In the fighting with our spouse or kids, or parents- our good. In betrayals, company of the unrighteous, or nightmares-our good. Life is not all good, yet he is good, therefore those that love him, we are good, and our lives our good despite of the bad. Lord open my eyes to see your good in all situations to test my character and to grow me. Open my ears to hear and respond according to your purposes. And may I seek open doors to share and proclaim your glory. We praise you for the Goodness of God!!
