Final Greetings

Open Your Bible

Colossians 4:7-15, Matthew 10:40-42, Romans 12:13, Ephesians 6:18-20

I remember that eighth grade summer. I’d show up at the park on those warm evenings with my gaggle of friends, hoping to get a glimpse of him. If he wasn’t there, but his friends were, the next best thing I hoped to hear was that he “said hi.” Just a few words, offered in front of everyone, told me that in the middle of whatever else was going on, he remembered me. I was seen.

As we consider today’s passage, I’m reminded of the gravity of a personal greeting. A letter penned in a prison cell and then carried by land and sea from Rome to Colossae, a distance of about 1,300 miles, would have been highly treasured. When Tychicus arrived, it’s likely that word spread quickly for everyone to gather, to see the seal of Paul’s letter cracked and hear its message.

And then, tucked at the end of Paul’s correspondence, so filled with encouragement and instruction, comes a closing litany of greetings from beloved and revered colaborers in the faith. To hear names of other believers they know, leaders and laborers they have heard about, offering them greetings, would reassure all who heard that they were remembered, prayed for, and valued.

It’s a bit like my heart-flutter at the park in eighth grade, but even better, because this closing holds more for their hearts than just “these guys say hi.”

In these parting verses, Paul modeled the very encouragement he described in chapter two, as he prayed for “their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ” (Colossians 2:2). Placed alongside greetings from and details about no fewer than eight different brothers and sisters, Paul’s words simultaneously informed, built up, prepared, encouraged, offered witness, and reassured the Colossians. Even in the repetition of the simple phrase, “one of you,” he reaffirmed who they were while also establishing these co-laborers. In urging them to welcome and receive each other (Colossians 4:10), he yet again confirmed their bond and place in Christ.

This is what it means to share in the needs of the saints (Romans 12:13). This is what it looks like to stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints (Ephesians 6:18). Paul’s witness to the work of Christ lives loudly beyond his cell. Even as he sat in chains, Paul built up these brothers and sisters in the faith one more time in these parting thoughts, “putting on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony,” (Colossians 3:14). He pronounces the victory of Christ that unites beyond border and circumstance.

    Rhonda J praise God! CeeGee praying for your quick recovery. Sophie Mitchum, happy belated birthday !

    1. Rhonda J says:

      Thank you Victoria E!!

  2. Sophie Mitchum says:

    Happy Thursday, She’s! Thank you all for the loving words and birthday wishes yesterday! What a treasure .
    Praising God for another year!

  3. Tami says:

    Your comments today and yesterday are so encouraging, especially those on prayer. Should be so simple but yet I find it so hard. Sometimes I feel like I say the same things over and over again and that I am somehow boring God. When I try to follow a pattern like ACTS, adoration, confessions, thanksgiving, supplication. It feels rote and like I’m rushing thru the ACT to get to the S. I don’t want to treat God like Santa Claus. And then there are times where I throw up a random prayer on my car and get the answer immediately. So I do believe that God hears my prayers… just wish I were “better” at it.

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Understand! Been there, too! ❤

  4. Mercy says:

    Morning she’s, praise the Lord for a new day. I am so thankful to come and see updates of our sisters in Florida. I tried to search for news, but there were so many of them that I did not know which to click on. I could barely sleep last night thinking about what you were going through. Thank you dear sisters for updating, so we know specifically what to pray for next. I was reading through your comments and what JULIA C brought up really made me think. The challenges of prayers, they are real and at times could be discouraging. It is a wrestle. I read this oldie but goodie devotional book from Oswald Chamber, a pocket size book I kept and reached for often, my utmost for His highest. He mentioned this about prayers, God’s silence, and I want to share in case any of us out there, perhaps we can perceive God’s silence for God’s rejection or abandonment. (I know I do, because of my upbringing, when my mom is silent, she rejects me, the silent treatment is a torment). But God is not like that and it took me a while to overcome. Due to our human’s condition, we might interpret things from the ways our (often flawed) social norms are, upon God, but God is so different. Oswald poses a delightful perspective. After God’s silence- What? Has God trusted you with His silence? A silence that is big with meaning. God’s silences are His answers. Think of those days of absolute silence in the home at Bethany. “When He had heard therefore he (Lazarus) was sick, He abode two days in the same place where He was” John 11:6. Can God trust you like that, or are you still asking for a visible answer? Are you mourning before God because you have not an audible response? You will find that God has trusted you in the most intimate way possible, with an absolute silence, not of despair, but of pleasure, because He saw that you could stand a bigger revelation. For a while you said- “I asked God to give me bread, and He gave me a stone”. He did not, and today you find He gave you the bread of life. If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His Father, He will give you the first sign of His intimacy- silence. Isn’t that something? Renewing of the mind! I am thankful for you shes. Lifting you up in prayers as always. Be blessed dear sisters. Pray without ceasing, for He who promised is able to perform!

    1. Cee Gee says:

      Beautiful, dear MERCY! ❤

    2. Lanie H says:

      I read that book every night! Mostly because I was listening to a Christi wright podcast and she read that devotional! She said think about it like following a GPS, it will say turn right, or right turn in 10 miles when God wants you to course correct, but when you’re on the right track it’s silent. That was so helpful for me! And I heard on His radio today someone say you may perceive your husband’s silence as he is mad at you, but to him it is feeling content and comfortable with you. And I’m like yes!!!! So many of us (women) think silence is bad, whereas it may mean the absolute opposite, contentment.

  5. Sarah Ritchie says:

    I am praying for you Maria. I have been ever since you shared about your troubles sleep and dreams. Thanking God for your safety.

  6. Cheryl Blow says:

    Final greetings- they can be sad because they are so final! I wonder if Paul knew his time was drawing near? But even in those final greetings, he was encouraging and building others up! I pray that I may always encourage and build others up!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, something beautiful for sure in final greetings. Any time we lose someone we think back to our last times talking with them or hearing from them!
      It was funny when I showed my son the radar if the hurricane coming, he videoed with me for a ling time , . Too bad I couldn’t bring forth much wisdom if it would have been my last communication!
      I love to wrie in my journal and to pray for people by name. They are my love letters to my family and friends!

  7. Kris says:

    I think this platform is a beautiful representation of “what it means to share in the needs of the saints”. We are great at encouraging one another and praying for each other. We can’t meet in person, just like Paul couldn’t meet with every one, but we have a way to connect every day.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Agree! So thankful for SRT and our SHEs and the ines that keep track of prayer requests, making it easy for us! And also our SRT SHE’S fb to connect further with everyone!! ❤️

      So true!

    3. Cee Gee says:

      Agree, Kris, and said similar yesterday. SRT AND OUR SISTERS here are such a BLESSING! ❤

  8. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

    What stands out to me as we have gone through the book of Colossians is prayer. Paul had a heart for prayer and was always praying for fellow believers, as was Epaphras. (Colossians 4:12) I’ve been looking a little more deeply at the prayers and noticing that they are always target spiritual growth, maturity and a strong, steadfast, walk with the Lord…This is how we need to pray for one another. There are so many distractions in our walk and so, so many spiritual battles going on with the evil one – oh how we need to be covered in prayer!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Thankful that this SRT group is filled with prayer warriors! Prayer is the very most and best we can do for each other!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Lifting my sweet sisters to the Lord this morning.
    Praying for all in Florida who are dealing with loss and destruction.

    Have a blessed Thursday. ❤️

        You, your family and your home were some of my first thoughts this am. Thank you for sharing this good news…. PTL!

          Thank you Adrienne! You all mean so much to me!!

      2. Mercy says:

        Praise God for the update Rhonda! I will continue to pray for power to restore, the first response team and their strength to endure, and the community. The Lord is working wonders right in front of our eyes to weaken this storm.

        1. Rhonda J. says:

          We got POWER tonight around 8:30! I think our whole community was shocked because usually we are the last they get to! Yay!! Thank you Lord!

    2. Rhonda J. says:

      Agree, that was my feelings driving back into my neighborhood this morning! No power, but spared with little damage! It was for sure a miracle we usually get so much storm surge and only got 3 to 4 foot!!

I just have ongoing conversations with God.. sometimes they are thoughts, sometimes there are words, but most of the time it is a silent communication from spirit to Spirit. I love how these verses encourage that!! And how prayer opens doors for the Holy Spirit, who gives us wisdom and how closely prayer and God’s Word are connected!! May we stay plugged/tapped into You Lord, may You be our Source and guide!! Let us allow You to season us and let us keep Your season!! TWO QUOTES RE: Ephesians 6:18
    Warren Wiersbe says:
    “Prayer is the energy that enables the Christian soldier to wear the armor and wield the sword. We cannot fight the battle in our own power, no matter how strong or talented we may think we are.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    John MacArthur says:
    This verse introduces the general character of a believer’s prayer life: 1) “all prayer and supplication” focuses on the variety;
    2) “always” focuses on the frequency (cf. Rom. 12:12; Phil. 4:6; 1 Thess. 5:17);
    3) “in the Spirit” focuses on submission, as we line up with the will of God (cf. Rom. 8:26, 27);
    4) “being watchful” focuses on the manner (cf. Matt. 26:41; Mark 13:33);
    5) “all perseverance” focuses on the persistence (cf. Luke 11:9; 18:7, 8); and
    6) “all saints” focuses on the objects (cf. 1 Sam. 12:23).
  14. Lanie H says:
    Thank you ladies for the prayers! Throughout this pregnancy I have felt a peace that transcends understanding, and I pray that over Maria and others that have lost their homes due to the hurricane. Today I did not “get as much” from the reading as I usually do, but as I hop on here and see my name called out in prayer, I can see the importance of acknowledgement. There is something to learn in each piece of scripture. I see all your comments ladies and I pray for you daily!
    1. Cee Gee says:
      ❤❤
  15. Aimee D-R says:
    Amen
  16. Kelly (NEO) says:
    Love the redemption in this passage. 1) Mark once derserted Paul, but now serving him, if not in prison with him (depends on how you read the verse). 2) Onesimus, runaway slave, being sent back to Philemon.
    .
    MARIA BEAR – Thanking God for bringing you and your family through the fire safely! May He impart His peace and wisdom as you navigate next steps.
    .
    ADRIENNE – Praying for peace, joy, and a doctor who has insight to your symptoms.
    1. Marla says:
      Amen ♥️
  18. Richlyn says:
    So, I have always pictured Paul sitting on the dirt floor of a dark cell, chains oh his hands and feet writing by the thin beam of light shining through a narrow window (as Melanie seems to have done as well)…but this morning I got curious and did some additional reading. Not to minimize his suffering, but this letter was more likely written during his house arrest described in Acts 28:30-31. Just thought that was interesting and love that after many years, God still reveals new truths! Keep opening your Bibles!!
    1. Stacey B says:
      Oh that is very interesting!
  19. Julia C says:
    Dear Father,
    About yesterday’s readings: Thank you for prayer. Thank you for this community. Thank you for open access to You at all places, at all times.
    As Tim Keller says in his book Prayer, “[Prayer] is the way we know [You], and finally treat [You] as God”.
    I join other sisters in saying: “I don’t understand”. How does prayer “work’? Prayer is indeed a mystery. I especially feel this tension between two things Jesus said: “Ask and you will receive” and “Thy will be done”.
    First, I often hesitate to tell you my deepest desires. I tell myself that You already know what’s on my heart. Or I am afraid to ask for the wrong things. Second, I am afraid Your answer will disappoint me. So I prefer to lower my expectations and stay silent…
    I can almost hear what You would say to me in response: that You love to bless Your children but also that You wait to give us a blessing until we have asked for it, so that we know it comes from You.
    Besides, I should not be afraid to ask, because even though I ask for the wrong thing, You will not give us anything contrary to Your will, and Your will is our ultimate good (Romans 8:28).
    So I ask You:
    Help me to both accept and expect everything from You.
    Help me to pray with “restful trust and confident hope”.
    Help me to treat You as You.
    AMEN.
    This prayer comes one day late, as I wrote it this morning after reading yesterday’s scriptures. But is there any one else who struggles with this? Any thoughts?
    (And please know my prayers are not always so “thoughtful”. As my mind quickly wanders I find it useful to write them down).
    Hugs and blessings to all ❤️
    1. Sally B. says:
      Amen, Julia!!
      May God so temper our hearts and fill our lives that we want nothing but His will – even when we know that often involves pain and suffering.
    2. Kelly (NEO) says:
      Amen. Thank you❣️
    3. Cee Gee says:
      Julia C, thanks for so perfectly expressing what a lot of us feel. Writing out prayers is a great practice! ❤
    4. Rachel says:
      Yes! You could have written this prayer from thoughts you gleaned from my head and heart! I want to get better and better at just telling Him all the things. Thank you for giving my struggles a voice ❤️
    5. Lanie H says:
      Julia, I used to fill the SAME way. When waiting to conceive I would pray for other women over and over. One day God said to me why aren’t you praying for what you really want. And I answered in a similar way you did. I couldn’t handle the disappointment of he said no. It was a lack of trust. And sometimes in that process (it was a long process of working through things) I found my sin or what I was holding onto was my expectation of time. See, I never coveted that others had a baby, I coveted that it happened “on time” according to societal expectations. I can’t explain it BUT GOD, but everything broke free for me at that point. See my sin wasn’t my desire, it was WHEN and HOW I wanted my desire. And it was based off the world standards not God’s standards. So my prayers changed, that he would help me endure until my time came, I repented of my expectations and asked him to help release me of those, and he did. I also learned in one SRT that ask and you will receive is better translated as keep asking. And I just kept asking for God’s presence and that we can guarantee we will receive.
      1. Cee Gee says:
        Hugs, LANIE! ❤ That’s a great learn!
    6. Carol J Mylin says:
      Thanks again Julia, for your vulnerability… I agree… prayer IS a mystery! And yet… what a blessing to be able to come into the presence of God through Jesus’s life, death and resurrection and the powerful intercession of the Holy Spirit! Yes! My mind wanders, too… and I definitely am lacking in discipline… BUT GOD! I am so grateful for Him and His Word… and for the Body of Christ and this group… as we grow in grace together! ♥️
    7. Wendy B says:
      Thank you for your prayer,Julia. It deeply resonates and is very much my thoughts
    8. Donna Wolcott says:
      Julia, that was beautifully said and so easy to identify with. Thank you for that prayer.️❤️
    9. Cathy McVey says:
      Julia, thank you for putting our thoughts into a prayer. So powerful! I too, find myself not always saying what I need or want out loud because I am afraid of the answer. Years ago I heard Joyce Meyer say to “take it to God and leave it there. Trust Him”. So I try to do that, sometimes it’s harder than other times. I try and remember to thank Him for what he is doing in my life. I do pray constantly and sometimes it may seem trivial but I feel like that keeps me in touch with the Father. Continued prayers for all involved in the hurricanes.❤️
      1. Mercy says:
        Amen Cathy. Joyce said that often and I am thankful for that repetition, because it is etched in my memory :)
  20. Tina says:
    The title of this devotional reminded me of a letter I received Six months after my dear daddy was called home. His final greetings, I guess. Arriving through my letter box in his familiar, at a slant,handwriting..
    The excitement of receiving letters, personal, from the heart and home letters, sure does bring joy.. This one however, brought confusion, and caused my heart to beat faster than normal!
    I finally opened it to find the familial greetings covered in love and those special words of encouragement, assurance, love, I had come to cherish in a letter from dad. I remember and cherish that letter, the last one of the thousands he had penned over the years.. with that Yours ever, Daddy signature. Oh, my heart!❤
    .
    BUT GOD..
    In the same way, I would like as Paul penned his letter to the Colossians, I would like to touch base with those in the background, who tirelessly bring us our daily reading, our daily fix through thick and through, through blips and glitches, Set us up to the point of being our purpose and the first thing we do before all else. Those who encourage us to press on, in the Word of God, who walk alongside us silently and and without agenda, only that we grow in our knowledge of the God who brought us together to be ‘sisters’ in His Word.
    I may not remember ALL names, that does not mean anything other than that I am getting older and the mind and memory is not as it used to be..I will apologise now..
    Amanda, Rachael, Ryan (Mr tec), Lindsey, Hannah, Kayla, Bailey, Tameshia, Bella, Delaney, Katy, Karson, Allison, Mary beth, Kelsey, Melanie, Bailey, Marnie, Rebecca, Nicole.. So many to mention, the point is, though this is not my final greeting, I hope not, I would like to say THANK YOU for the days, those endless days, those sacred days you have given to me to grow in His Word through your kindness , grace love and encouragement, over the years… THANK YOU!
    As daddy used to end his letters so I end this thank you to all,
    Yours ever,
    Tina..❤
    .
    To my beloved sojourners here at SRT, Thank you too for being here, in the thick and thin of life and what it might throw at us, right now it’s storms and hurricanes.. BUT GOD.., right..?
    Praying in this storm for all affected, and holding you all in prayer to the One who has gathered us to be, praying His blessings galore over each of you, today.
    God bless you.. My dears.❤
    1. Julia C says:
      Amen and Amen, TINA! Joining you in thanksgiving for the SRT staff and SRT sisters ❤️
    2. Sally B. says:
      Aren’t we so very grateful for all the STR staff’s dedication to this ministry. What a blessing it is to have this encouragement, each and every day, to open our Bibles!!
      Thank you SRT!
      Amen.
    3. Rachel says:
      Amen! So grateful! ❤️
    4. Donna Wolcott says:
      Well said Tina! ❤️
    5. Wendy B says:
      Amen! Yes, so thankful ❤️
    6. Cheryl Blow says:
      Amen!
    7. Traci Gendron says:
      AMEN!!
    8. Cathy McVey says:
      Amen! Thank you Tina ❤️
    9. Cee Gee says:
      TINA, you have your special place here, too, sister! The day doesn’t seem complete without your comment! Love you! ❤
    You are in my thoughts and prayers, dear Sisters. Whether mentioned by name or not, I pray that you know that.
    Particularly praying for all of you affected by Milton right now. Prayer works! Many prayed and it was downgraded to cat 3. I’m sure when you’re in the midst of it that might mean nothing, but grateful today for God’s mercy.
    I’ll be spending some time this afternoon with a beautiful woman from our church who is coming to the end of her earthly life. She has ALS and has chosen to go on hospice. Even amidst all that she still praises the Lord. Please pray that we can be a blessing to each other during this time.
    Blessed Thursday to you!❤️
    1. Tina says:
      Praying for you as you are Jesus’ hands and feet to your friend
    4. Rhonda J. says:
      That is hard, I had a dear friend suffer through ALS and chose hospice too, but she left a huge example to me with her “praising and worshiping until the end!” I always think of her when I feel like complaining! I’m sure you are a blessing to each other. Prayers for strength in this time.
      I prayed that if no “peace, be still”, the hurricane would be downgraded. So thankful for that.
        Our prayers from all over the nation worked! God hears our pleas and faithful prayers!
    From HRT: “God created us for community. Maybe today’s the day we make our own list and send that encouragement that’s so necessary to sustain, encourage, and exhort the brothers and sisters to keep up the good fight of faith. Praise God for the reminder.”
    Praise God for this community!
      Yes,Julia!
      Taking our cue from Paul…
      Sister Shes are being “built up, prepared, encouraged, offered witness, reassured, and established as co-laborers” in Christ.
      Here we greet each other with a “holy kiss” & open our hearts to give & receive blessings upon blessings.
      And as you said: “Praise God for this community”!
