Reaching Forward to God’s Goal

Open Your Bible

Philippians 3:12-16, Isaiah 40:27-31, Romans 8:28-30, 1 Corinthians 9:19-27

There’s a quote attributed to Maya Angelou that comforts my inner critic: “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” I’m not sure if these are actual words written by Angelou or if it’s one of those quotes that has been passed around so much on Instagram nobody knows the true source. But wherever it comes from, I like it. Something in it resonates with me, an echo of much-needed grace.

I’d like to think this is a message someone in the church at Phillippi needed to hear when Paul’s letter came to town. In Philippians, Paul wasn’t writing to correct an issue or fight a dangerous teaching. Instead, he sent an extended thank-you letter, a note of encouragement, and a rally to keep going.

Metaphors about running races and winning prizes aren’t all that unusual in Paul’s writing, but if we look a bit more closely, we’ll find the words of a gentle, loving coach here. His letter to the Philippians includes a heartfelt thank you for their support and the reminder that there is still so much work to do for the kingdom (Philippians 1:21–24). He pointed to Jesus’s obedience unto literal death as the ultimate example of humility (Philippians 2:8), a stark contradiction to his own list of credentials for “confidence in the flesh,” which is enough to make any zealous striver or recovering perfectionist wither. It’s also a false confidence Paul then recognized as utterly empty (Philippians 3:4–6). His priorities had changed.

Yes, there is work. There is effort. There is a goal to pursue, a race to run, a job to do (vv.12–13). But look for the grace between the words: there is no striving in his words. Paul called this way of thinking a mark of maturity—the realization that all we need is God. This is not the anxious striving to appease an angry Father. This is not fearfully walking on eggshells. Instead, Paul appealed to his readers’ identity as “citizens of heaven” and encouraged them to “live up to whatever truth we have [already] attained” (Philippians 1:27, 3:16).

And so, there is a tension: to work hard for God’s purposes but trust that Christ has taken hold of us. To embrace our identity as kingdom citizens, while knowing we won’t live this life perfectly, nor could we ever earn our way back into a right relationship with God. To be content where we are while seeking to grow, and trusting that when the time is right, the Holy Spirit will reveal truth and nudge us in the direction that will lead us to look more like Jesus. “Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead,” we learn to pursue the ultimate prize: Christ Jesus Himself (vv.13–14).

We grow. We learn. We know better. We do better. Until the day we step into the kingdom and the breeze on our faces feels like home.

My son’s first tattoo. I remember him calling me from college saying, um mom, I got a tattoo but I don’t think you’ll be mad because it’s a Bible verse. It shows up on day 9. 1 Corinthians 9:24 yesterday was 9/24 too. 9/24 is my father in laws birthday and my father’s death date. My son got the tattoo before he realized the significance of the numbers. It’s really neat to read it and study it now!! God is Good!!

Michelle reading your post convicted me in the very best possible way. Thank you for sharing and for your beautiful humility.

These are such soothing words to a recovering perfectionist and overthinker like myself. The life of a Christian is one of constant growth. It’s not about being perfect or getting everything right, it’s about moving forward with the guidance of the Word and the Holy Spirit, and becoming more like Christ with each step.

  6. Michaela Hawkins says:

Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to forget our past and seek you. Thank you for your ultimate prize of Jesus Christ and redemption.

y’all, i have been hearing this old children’s song (now song by VeggieTales) in my head for all these lessons of Paul’s letters: Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, and now Philippians…

    I am a promise
    I am a possibility
    I am a promise
    With a capital P
I am a great big bundle of potentiality, oh yeah
And I am learning to hear God’s voice
And I am trying to make the right choices
I’m a promise to be anything He wants me to be
    I am a promise
    I am a possibility
    I am a promise
    With a capital P
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learning to hear God’s voice
And I am trying (I’m trying)
    To make the right choices
I’m a promise to be anything God wants me to be
I can go anywhere that he wants me to go
I can be anything that He wants me to be
I can climb the high mountains
I can cross the White Sea
I am a great big promise you see

@Michelle P – I think what you’re doing is a gift to others. Good job for keeping your head high and reminding yourself to pray for her. I would have been quick to judge her her what you did was a tremendously important reminder. God doesn’t care if we are a doctor or a delivery driver. Looking at it from her point of view maybe she felt ashamed she needed her groceries delivered vs. just going and picking them up herself. Often times I feel guilty for having food delivered or doing grocery pickup when I’m fully capable of doing it myself.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen..so true, I would have to! So good for these reminders!

    2. Michelle P says:

Aw you’re totally right. Thank you!! ❤️ I know many of my customers are capable, just appreciate the convenience – especially if they have kids :) that’s totally okay!

    Warning! Long post ❤️.

Good morning, as many of you have already said, I love the quote from Jen Yokel: We grow. We learn. We know better. We do better. I have been a Christian most of my life. But I have had many back steps and challenges to go through. Each one brought growth, learning, and strengthening of my faith. This past year though, shook me to my core. Cancer?? No, not me, there’s no cancer in my family. This must be a mistake. “you have Multiple Myeloma. It’s not curable, but very treatable”. It took my breath away. I was supposed to be the strong one but I had such intense pain from my back fractures that I had to completely rely on help from others. BUT GOD! In that weakness, He reminded me of other times he held me and the one set of footprints in the sand. I knew that He would bring me through this challenge too. One step, one day at a time, treatment, I journaled every scripture on faith and healing. I made a healing playlist and listened to it whenever I needed it. Stem cell transplant. Now remission. I’m still growing, i’m still learning, i’m doing better, getting stronger and I’m holding to my Master’s hand until the breeze on my face feels like home. Thank you Jenn Yokel for this beautiful devotion. ❤️. Have a wonderful day friends.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Great testimony Cathy! Love you so much, and you are such a great example!! Sharing as we go through something unfathomable is what helps us all on our journeys, and to be able to pray and focus on others!! Your “long” post is my normal! lol! Thanks for sharing…share often! You never know who is here and needing to hear it!!

    2. Natasha R says:

Thanking God for your remission! Your testimony encourages me as I move forward through my own healing.

  10. Traci Gendron says:

What a beautiful picture, “Until the day we step into the kingdom and the breeze on our faces feels like home.”

At times I can be pulled back into my past. Wondering how anyone will believe me if I share about God. BUT I keep praying God will keeps my eyes up. Up on Him. Through Him I can share about His loving forgiveness, grace, and salvation.

    1. Cee Gee says:

That phrase spoke to me, too! ❤

  11. Gwineth52 says:

    Good Morning Shes
Paul is that good coach. Pushing us forward by reminding us where we came from. Living by example. Setting the pace. Offering constant encouragement.
But not letting up. There’s always more. Disciplined. Duty bound. Driven by gratitude.
How wonderful to have that kind of love in my corner, by my side, at all times. And know it through Jesus!

  12. Kris says:

Our goal should be to simple know Him better. Not add more to our calendars. Not perform more tasks. Simply to know Him better. Anything He wants us to do will come from knowing Him better, He will put desires into our hearts that go along with the “stuff” He wants us to do.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

Yes amen!! Nothing is better than Knowing HIM!! And then it flows from there!!

    2. Mercy says:

Eternal life is to know Him.

  13. Adrienne says:

I needed the encouragement today from Paul, the gentle coach.
    .
All of the readings are ones that are so special and uplifting. Let’s all take a deep breath. ❤️

  14. Kris says:

As we live longer, we will have more to look back on and regret. There will always be that thing you said that you wish you hadn’t, or that opportunity you wish you would have taken. But press on, learn from the mistake, keep moving (or stumbling) forward, change with the knowledge that you have now. God is showing me so much that the life we are living is a journey, it’s not like we will reach a destination while on this earth, we will always be moving, growing, one step at a time. As for the stuff we did in the past?, God’s grace will cover it. Give it to Him, repent of it, thank Him for new knowledge, ask for restoration for the wrongs you’ve done. He’s big enough for all of that!

    1. Gwineth52 says:

      Yes, Kris.
      Pushing forwards towards the prize.
Not falling back into the “pit of the past”!

  15. Cheryl Blow says:

Press on CV- stood out to me. Once upon a time when I was 60, I ran a half marathon with my daughter. When you are running, you can not look back behind you or you will fall. You keep your eyes ahead. You have to be aware of obstacles in front of you. Also, you don’t see the finish line, you are just following the route ahead. Sounds a little like our passage today! Keep pressing on, don’t give up, you will make it to the finish line Trust where God is leading you. Prepare and keep yourself nourished by God’s word as you go on your way!

Love everyone’s insights! Praying for all of you! You are in it to win it!

    1. Traci Gendron says:

      I like this analogy!

  16. Mari V says:

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which Gad has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This is my senior quote. I had just become a born-again-Christian (as a Catholic) 2 years prior. And it was written below my senior picture in the yearbook! LOVE that we are studying Philippians together. In the next chapter we will read my LIFE verse! Good morning sweeties! Hard day yesterday. All 4 four of us at work were so tired and it was only Monday! I didn’t sleep as well and had a slight nightmare. Please pray for GOOD sleep tonight. GOD is STILL GOOD!!!!

    1. Rhonda J. says:

I LOVE that you got to leave a verse like that under your picture!! What a legacy right there!! Sorry you had a long day..praying your week goes better from here!! I would be worn out with 4 year olds period! Did I tell you I tried to sub once several years ago…and I was horrible!! I did 3rd grade once, first grade once, and then kindergartens!! Trying to get them to be still for naps was not easy…and then the bell rang and I hadn’t given them their folders and we scurried…and it was craZY! I said…nope…not for me!! I don’t even like volunteering in the kids at church. Funny that I wanted to own my own daycare when I was in high school. I LOVE people that LOVES our kids though, special teachers like you and our others here!!

      1. Cee Gee says:

Amen, Rhonda! Hang in there, Mari! ❤

  17. Caroline Bridges says:

I have been told not to be so hard on myself, but I still am because it’s how I should be to fit into society. I remember sitting in stop station when I was a kid crying my eyes out. I don’t want to put any slack in what I do or in myself. It’s quite conflicting.

  18. Heide Bouter says:

Thank you for this grace-filled devotional!! I will writing some of the quotes down to remember.

  19. Cee Gee says:

From Warren Wiersbe in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27:

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Thank you for these verses Cee Gee!

  20. Lanie H says:

I’ve been reading my scriptures in the book and so haven’t been on here everyday. Today in my book I wrote: effort vs. grace ? And then decided to hop on. Man I’m glad I did. It was like God perfectly curated the answer to my question. And I feel so encouraged that this is a normal step in the maturity journey, because I have been working through this tension for the past year! Not that I have already reached the goal but am making every effort to take hold of it. Encouraged that we are on the right path!

    1. Gwineth52 says:

  22. Michelle P says:

Thank you, Lord. I am thankful for the added Scripture Tami posted, about the humble being exalted. (1 Peter). Yesterday, I was delivering groceries to a high school classmate I hadn’t seen in 10+ years. I could let myself be embarrassed that I was doing her “chores” or I could be thankful I had the opportunity to pray for her and do her a service.
So as I drove (in my rental car ❤️) to her house, I lifted her & her family up in prayer. I know her sister is a believer, but wasn’t sure where she was at with her faith. When I saw my classmate in person, she didn’t say much but thank you and handed me some extra cash. I smiled and kept my mind focused on the fact that God sent me there.
When I started this job, I felt ashamed because I have two degrees from college and yet I’m delivering groceries. I didn’t want anyone to know I did this. But what a shame to think that way! I was wrong. Every job is important… and it is a pleasure to do this one! Every role in the body has its place… may He be glorified in whatever work we do!

    1. Lynne from Alabama says:

Michelle, please don’t put yourself down for delivering groceries! It’s honest work (as my dad used to say) and is a much needed service. I have had to use grocery delivery since Jack became ill and it is a lifesaver for us. Keep doing what you’re doing and please don’t beat my friend up! Love you!

    2. Carla says:

I Love how you are using this job as an opportunity to pray for others!

    3. GramsieSue says:

Yes, Michelle! You are doing a service that is a blessing to others! Thank you!

    4. Carol J Mylin says:

Michelle, I love how the gift of Humility is being developed in your life as you serve! May God (Holy Spirit) flow through you as you live your life for Him!! Thanks for sharing!♥️

    5. R says:

Oh Michelle! I was very ill this summer and don’t know what I would have done without food delivery!! I would have been elated to know that my driver was praying for me!! I love what God is doing
      in your life! You know
      you can say with Paul
      whatever I’ve gained
(2 degrees) I’m willing to count it loss for the excellency of the knowledge of knowing
      Him!!

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Amen!! Yes, we just never know who is desperately grateful for delivery service!! AND a praying driver…how beautiful!!

      2. Michelle P says:

So true. I was thinking that yesterday!

    6. Cee Gee says:

Michelle, like so many other sisters, I am VERY thankful for people like you who deliver to our door!!! A lady in our life group does that. Yes, she is highly educated as well, but the job is paying her bills at this point in her life. You saying a prayer when God prompts is such a picture of love and obedience. Keep at it li’l sis! We need people like you! ❤

      1. Michelle P says:

Thank you for sharing – glad I am among other sisters doing this in obedience to Jesus!

    7. Tami C says:

What a beautiful picture of what we are called to go – be the light of Christ – Ephesians 6:18-20 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this is mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

    8. Michelle P says:

Thank you all for the encouragement:)

@Linda in NC – So sorry to hear of another trip to the ER. Praying Gene will heal quickly and for God to give you an extra measure of strength.

  24. Libby K says:

I needed to hear these words so desperately today. I was reliving past choices yesterday and was being crushed by the guilt of them. I love the fact that we can say, ‘Yes, I did that. But by the grace of God, I have learned to do better and I’m no longer that person’.

    1. Rhonda J. says:

      Yes, amen, same!

    2. Gwineth52 says:

      Yes, Libby K!
Been there. Done that. Moving on.

  25. Sharon, Jersey Girl says:

Forget what is behind, reach forth to those things that are before. (Philippians 3:13)
    ___________
Forgetting is the hardest thing to do, but in order to keep going forward in this daily race, we must forget and we must keep going forward.
A runner in a race never looks behind him when he’s running – he only looks ahead. To look behind would only trip him up. The same goes for us in this “race toward heaven”. If we are continually looking behind us, we will stumble and fall. Forget the past. It’s done, it’s over it can not be “re-done”. I can choose to take all the hurts, all the injustices, all the unfairness, all the anger, bitterness, and put them behind me – leaving it all at the cross, or I can keep carrying them – to a point that they weigh me down and hinder me in the race. I choose to keep going forward. I choose to continue on trusting God, trusting Christ and moving forward each day throwing aside everything that will hinder me. The best part is – we don’t have to run this race alone! We have the presence of the Holy Spirit. It is He who will give us the strength and wisdom that we need and will keep nudging us in the direction we need to go….”Let us live up to what we have already attained.”

When Paul says press on and press toward, I hear -learn from what I’ve done and where I’ve been and focus on drawing closer to the Lord, don’t waste time continually looking back and wishing I had done this or that. I did it or said it and I can’t change the past, but I can seek wisdom and guidance from the Lord for what I should do going forward.

1 Corinthians 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. NKJV

“Discipline my body and bring it into subjection”
When I read this this, I started thinking about what would be included in that discipline- what my mind is thinking, the words I’m saying, my actions and reactions to the words and actions of others, what I say without words by facial expressions or by not replying to someone, what my eyes are seeing and my ears are hearing … and the list goes on.
-Lord, I pray that I will be tuned in to the discipline I need to exercise throughout each day. Fervently praying also for the young person who needs discipline in all these areas as well, especially words and thoughts, what is being seen and heard, actions and reactions.

Great devo! To be content where we are while seeking to grow, and trusting that when the time is right, the Holy Spirit will reveal truth and nudge us in the direction that will lead us to look more like Jesus.
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God and at the right time, He will exhalt you. Cast your cares on him because he loves you. 1 Peter
I needed to hear this today. I am a work in progress and changes will occur in Gods timing. He has predestined me to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29). It’s already in process, I just need to trust that promise and run in such a way to win the prize (1 Cor 24) , living up to whatever truth I have attained (Phil 3:16). I’m so often thinking that I am not where I should be, not faithful enough, not holy enough, not more like this one or that one, not loving enough, forgiving enough, BUT GOD has already predestined me (us!) to be conformed to the image of Jesus. This takes the pressure off of me to be constantly striving. Trust the process. I’m praying for all the requests as I read them. Have a blessed day ladies!

“Do the next right thing, to the glory of God.” That is what came to mind as I read these scriptures. I couldn’t remember who made this quote famous so I googled it. The person I was thinking of was Elisabeth Elliot. But it was interesting that there were many famous people who also seem to be known for saying it. That is why this verse, Philippians 3:15,16 is so important. 15 Therefore, let all of us who are mature think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will reveal this also to you. 16 In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we have attained.

Being people who “do the next right thing” without the direction of the Holy Spirit does not further God’s Kingdom. From my search I realized that there are lots of people of think that they are doing the next right thing, but it is from their human perspective. And as we know, we get off-track when we rely on our human understanding. That’s why I like this portion of scripture so much, because as Christ-followers, it allows us to do the next right thing in what we know now, but when the HS reveals more to us (through reading God’s Word and praying) then we do the next right thing with that truth. I want to be someone who continues to seek truth and allows the HS to reveal truth to me so that my “next right thing” is glorifying God and not man.

Jesus has made us his own; He renews our strength, and He is conforming us into His image. And as the lyrics of ‘In Christ Alone’ say, ‘He is my life, my strength, my song.’ With Jesus, we press on.”

Thank you, Jesus, for running the race so that we can follow You. Amen.

    1. Sally B. says:

Love that – reminds me of the Footprints poem. When we don’t see but one set of footprints, that’s when He’s carrying us!!
      Amen.

  35. Sally B. says:

The age old tension between working ‘for’ salvation verses working ‘from’ salvation. Another helpful spot that I noticed was verse 12: “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” Christ ‘has’ made me his own, not Christ ‘will’ make me his own once I reach the goal. Thanks be to God who called us – before we did anything – to be justified, sanctified and on day glorified through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus! Amen.

    1. Tricia C says:

      Amen

    Good Morning! Dearests,
Trusting you slept well and that you are ready to see what this new day the Lord has made will bring!
    I am!
    .
I already am loving these words of JEN’S…
    We grow.

    We learn.

    We know better.

We do better. Until the day we step into the kingdom and the breeze on our faces feels like home.
‘..the breeze on our faces feels like home..’ (The real home with a capital H.) This really got me!
I long for home, often, the place I was happiest when I was younger, as life takes turns I wasn’t expecting, but on other days, when life feels unbearable, I long for the Home that will end the sorrow of my heart, or the troubles of this world.. The Kingdom\Eternity!
    .
    BUT GOD..
He reminds me that I am here for His purpose and that as I forge through the tensions of this world, to realise that I do not have to strive per se’,, because HE is with me in the moments, good or bad, happy or sad.. He is all I need to see my days through, and through, I will..
That is a comfort to me, dear hearts..
I know the TRUTH, I hold fast to His Word, and I trust that I will be held in all circumstances by the One who gave His life that I might live, HOPEFUL.
What I do know is, though, I have not arrived, not by a looooooong shot, I am not where I used to be, and that in itself is a miracle, by and in His grace!
    .
I am absolutely so grateful to, and for you, dear sisters, for your company and the love and the encouragement and the prayers as we journey together.. running the race and looking to the forever prize..
    .
    It truly is an honour!
    .
Wishing you the best of days as we snuggle into HIS Word, and TRUTH today..
    .
Much love and hugs, as always covered in prayers, requested or felt to do so…
    .
    God bless you,
    Tina ❤❤

Amazing insights Tina! Thank you! I know you are from Ghana. I was there with my church the summer before the pandemic. We served in an orphanage that a young girl from our church was led by the HS to open. It is an amazing testimony! The children are taken off the streets or revised from slavery, given a roof over their head, a Christian education, a new family with a house mom, and hope for the future. They also opened a second one in Zambia not too long ago. If you’d like to check them out they are called “Project Nyamense” (PNN). They are an hour from Accra. We loved our time in Ghana and I even picked up some Twi! Ma dindi say Tami. Lol

Tina you are echoing my heart cry this morning.I often think of the “home” where I was happiest! But your
words reminded me that there is a homeland for the soul where there is not just happiness but eternal joy, and on this very rainy day a land of an unclouded day!!!.❤️!!!.
