We’re halfway through This Is the Old Testament,  our thematic overview of the Old Testament. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we’ll finish our look at the books of Wisdom Literature and begin the last sections of the Old Testament, the Major and Minor Prophets.

What Is Proverbs? The book of Proverbs contains wisdom sayings, primarily from King Solomon, calling the readers to walk in the way of godly wisdom rather than the world’s foolishness.

How Proverbs Fits Into the Story: The book of Proverbs presents two paths: one of wisdom and one of foolishness. Establishing principles, not promises, this book points not only to the potential earthly benefits of wisdom, but also to the greater eternal joy and blessing wisdom brings. As Proverbs continually calls us to obedience, we can rest in the truth that conviction is a gift from the Holy Spirit intended for God’s glory and our good.

Reflection Questions:
1. Proverbs 1:1–7 gives a list of reasons for reading these wisdom principles. Which stand out to you most, and why?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

Proverbs 1:1-7 are things we all are in search of…and God promises them to us. They are found in Him and He is overflowing with these heavenly characteristics. He gives freely.

I love James 3:17 as it reflects the actual character of Jesus. It looks like God has been talking about seeking His wisdom of this time and then send a perfect example that we can look up to when living in His wisdom!

Hi Shianne! For me what has helped has been actually just reading the Word- through this I have come to understand the relational aspect of God. I will look for some resources that use science but at the end of the day the existence of God is not really something that can be scientifically proven! I think a lot of things in science such as the complexity of our anatomy and physiology, the vastness of the universe, etc, can point to God. The more I study the human body the more I am convo fed we were engineered by a mighty Power !
