1 John 1:9

Text: 1 John 1:9

We believe memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to carry the Word of our God with us wherever we go—to have God-breathed truth, instruction and reproof in our hearts and minds as we live unto Him each day.

This week we’ve chosen a verse to keep close to our hearts during repentance.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
– 1 John 1:9, ESV

Write this verse down—copy it twenty time if that helps! Post it on your mirror or at your desk, in your car or on the fridge—anywhere you’ll see it often. Save the image below as your phone’s lock screen so you can read these words of truth throughout the day.

We want to be a community that is intentional about scripture memorization. Will you join us?

    1 John 1:9Amplified Bible (AMP)

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

    1 John 1:9The Message (MSG)

If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins—make a clean breast of them—he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing.

I could not have picked better timing to read this. God’s timing is so perfect!

An incredibly familiar & yet incredibly poignant verse… sometimes you just have to hear or see in a new & surprising way, that which you've heard too many times to count, for it to hit home… this verse is on point today!

I am taking an adult confirmation class at church and today we talked about confession. Love SRT, I am so new to the bible. It’s not that I don’t believe, my parents never went to church.
I have had a rough year last year with my marriage, with me making some bad decisions. I have learned to reach out to the Lord and confess my sins…I am so remorseful for what I have chosen to do and I have had an amazing connection with the Lord. He has changed me and made me see that I am worthy and he does forgive me.
I am so thankful I have found SRT and so thankful for the Lord. I am so excited, I will be baptized on Easter Eve and confirmed there after. I truly love the person I have chosen to be.

What an amazing coincidence (?) that this was the verse this week. My dear friend and I were just having this very conversation last night. I was sharing with her how my life has just fallen apart over the last couple of years. I’ve struggled so much to believe what the Bible says about God because of some painful experiences I’ve had with Christians. I’ve turned my back on God and tried to make life work on my own terms … and to be honest it’s just not. We were talking about psalm 107. “They cried” … “He delivered”. Over and over again. I said, “I just don’t think it works that way for ME. I’ve passed that point. I’ve gone too far too many times”. She wrapped her arms around me and said, “Steph. What about 1 John 1:9? Where is the limit? He is faithful to forgive if you will repent and return”. And then this morning. Here it is again.

Awesome testimony of His love for you & focus on you…….

    2. tina says:

Steph, don't you just love it when God shows up through his Word… He loves you….He died for you and me, He is faithful ..for all eternity..He is calling you back, HE loves YOU…full stop…xxx

In light of our discussion yesterday, The Lord showed me how much I still wrestle with the sin of perfectionism-trying to attain perfection in some form of my own making, rather than accepting, wanting, believing, that he offers me true perfection, completion in him. See Phillippians 3 in the Message Translation.

What caught my attention today was that both this and last week's verses mention God's faithfulness. It is an interesting topic, guess I should study it more… What a God we serve! Or a study on God's character here?

I've been reading Proverbs and it struck me today that noting our sin and confessing it allows us to not only experience forgiveness and newness, but also helps us separate the Truth from the lies and lets us draw closer to gaining wisdom & discernment! Praise God for His promises!

    1. Cathy says:

As I sit by my father’s bedside in hospice, not only do I cry tears of joy but sadness for all the grief I carry for my non-believing siblings. Today I was able to finally give it all to God. I am a sinner but know He still loves me and by my actions in the weeks that follow may they see Christ in me.

      1. Cathy says:

God is faithful and heats my cries and prayers

      2. Alynn says:

Praying for you and your Daddy.

  12. Pam says:

What a blessing to know that we are both loved and cleansed when we confess our sins.

  13. Bethany says:

If only we always believed it was just this simple! Jesus is faithful, no matter what!

  14. Nora says:

I feel like sometimes I need to ask him to reveal to me where my sin lies. I hope he makes me more aware because I know of two areas of concern that I normal pray for but I know there must be much more.

    1. Sarah says:

You are not alone in this! I think this is a wise thing to pray and shows you want the Lord to create in you a clean heart. I've found myself praying Psalm 19:12-13 lately, that the Lord will forgive me of the ways I sin against Him without realizing it and keep me from willful sins. God is faithful and I know the Holy Spirit will reveal the sin in my heart if I faithfuly turn to Him.

  15. Ioneem says:

Are we faithful to do the confessing? What a promise he gives us. And so simple. Bless you all on this Lord's day. May you feel His presence as you go to worship.

    2. Beth Warner says:

      Yes,Amen!

  16. joanne says:

One of my favorite verses. So simple. So revolutionary. Confess and He will forgive and cleanse. Amen!

  17. Candacejo says:

The enemy surely hates that verse! His biggest lie is to make us think that we have fallen too many times, repeated the same sin again and again and basically have no right to come before a holy God. If we listen to THAT voice we will shrink back from our merciful Savior and miss out on the mercies of the Lord.

There is so much hope in this verse that reminds us that Jesus DOES welcome us in our sin, it is what He died for. He is waiting for us to confess it, even though He already knows about it :) But His arms are outstretched in forgiveness and He offers strength and power in the Holy Spirit, Christ IN us, to be able to overcome our sin.

Be encouraged today, Sisters, be welcomed in through repentance and receive His forgiveness so that we may live unhindered while we share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. ♥

Be blessed by this song by Chris Tomlin…At the Cross… "There's a place where sin and shame are powerless. Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness! Where all the love I've ever found, comes like a flood, comes flowing down…" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRZSRi5yyoQ

      Beautiful lyrics!

    2. Kyla says:

You’re right…the devil hates that verse and will surely try to play mind games to trick you into thinking you’re too far gone or that you’ve messed up too many times. That is just what the devil does—LIES!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to post today! I hope everyone has a very blessed Sunday! :)
