“Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he looked at those around him and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.””
    ‭‭Mark‬ ‭3:33-35‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Jesus grieved at their hardness of heart” Lord, let us not become so occupied in ourselves in this world that we become numb and our hearts become hardened to the amazing blessings and beauty you surround us with every day

  13. Ashley Martin says:

I always wondered what Jesus’ mom thought when he said “who are my mother and brothers”. As far as I know, he didn’t go out to her. The Bible never said he did. What an eye opening experience to look at yourself and really realize your thoughts, faith, and belief.

Whitney- check out The Bible Recap podcast. She breaks down two chapters at a time in about 5 minutes, and it’s been helpful for me to listen to her commentary to understand the OT better. Don’t give up, and look for Jesus throughout the OT passages!

  21. Sarah Johnson says:

It’s cool to see God’s grace in the old testimony as he gives the Israelites a way out of their sin by blessing them with a priest in Aaron and his family. Having a priest was their only way to be delivered from judgement, and God provided.

  22. Beth Goodman says:

  27. Michelle Chen says:

The unclean spirits recognized who Jesus was and what his authority was. Yet He commanded them to be silent. And they obeyed. He is Lord of all.

  28. Andre'e says:

it’s a beautiful thing to know that he himself is the inheritance of Aaron and those associated with him. How different would our mind set be if we looked at God as our inheritance and not earthly things.

I was a little confused with the language but it made sense after reading it a couple of times. I believe this message is for me to learn to accept things the way they are and to know that God knows that he’s doing.

  30. Naomi says:

Sometimes it is hard to follow, but I believe as I keep going I will find that God will translate it into my life one way or another.
Just starting my Bible journey and I am very excited cited to be in Gods word on a daily basis. tbin

    1. Erica says:

I agree Naomi but stay the course and ask God to speak to youspeak to youtspspeak to

    2. I completely agree with this, you’re two weeks in now how are you feeling?? I am a little confused as well but I know if I can just keep going daily and pressing into him he will do the same to me.

  31. KK says:

I often focus in Jesus’s judgment on the religious leaders of his day and forget his compassion for them: 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart…”

    1. Naomi says:

I have to remember even Jesus loves our corrupt politicians. But He had a plan and it will be seen.

  32. Jesus made a way for sinners to reach perfection. perfecto

  33. Madison says:

I’m having difficulty understanding these two paragraphs. Could any one explain them to me?

  34. Hannah Senior says:

As you read the Old Testemant, you realise how much it took to be clean/forgiven of only one sin! And then you read the the New and how Jesus is telling storoes about how everyone would be forgiven of all sins, he doesnt state how at thw rime, but we know it was him who died and rose again! Think that deserves a Hallelujah, Amen! x

  35. Alisa says:

I find these chapters interesting to read together. The OT chapters are all about the rules of being right with God and in the Mark chapter, Jesus healed on the Sabbath which was thought to be unlawful. Interesting juxtaposition, and it makes me happy we are no longer subject to the OT laws.

  36. Sami says:

Jesus is amazing. What a perfect teacher and moral compass for us all.

  37. Rebekah says:

What does it mean to blasphemy against God?

    1. Bailey Hunt says:

Blasphemy is the profane talk of God. Such as comparing him to the Devil as was done in Mark 3, where it is pronounced as an eternal sin.

  38. Hesaved83 says:

Kati, yes I love what Holy Spirit revealed to you! Amen!

  39. Kati says:

The contrast of these two passages struck me today. For the past few days we have been reading in Numbers of the different laws about who is clean/unclean and Gods laws regarding it. But these passages in Mark contrast it so vividly because the unclean people are exactly who Jesus came for! He touches those with unclean with diseases and heals them making them able to now be restored to God. What a real picture of what Christ did for us in making us clean and able to come before God.

    1. Angelyn says:

Also amazing how those people were once cast out (albeit temporarily) and physically separated from their own people during their uncleanliness/disease, but Jesus has no qualms about physically touching the sick and ailing. How powerful it must have been just to witness Jesus in the presence of the sick, and even more so for him to touch and heal them!

    2. Nadine says:

I love what God has revealed to you. It probably would’ve taken me longer and studying to get what the spirit has given to you. Thank you for allowing God to use you in this interpretation.

  40. Suzanne says:

The Levites may not have had an “inheritance” in terms of land, etc, but just look at what they did receive in addition to God….all the best of everything the Israelites brought as sacrifices and offerings! And what they brought was the best of all they had, so the priests would have received the cream of every crop as their portion. And since they were required to tithe also, God once again received the best of the best. This is a good example for us in our own lives and offerings to the Lord.

  41. Hesaved83 says:

Love that Numbers shows God’s calling the Levites and setting them apart from the other Israelites then in Mark; He does the same with the 12 Apostles…

  42. Stephanie Volkmer says:

I loved verse 20, in numbers 18: where God is just basically saying “you are going to always be different than those who are around you. You will always not have the things that they have or get, BUT you will have the Lord!”
What an amazing promise and reminder. So grateful for this.

    1. Edda says:

That is such a good verse because even envy among other Christians being blessed when we ourselves aren’t seeing the same kind of blessings even though we are being blessed in other ways!

  43. Gabrielle says:

Jesus is King! I love how he shows his authority so strongly to the Pharisees who knew their stuff, but expected a different kind of messiah! When Jesus says that a house divided will fall, he says that one- he is God and not a demon like they claim and two- the Devil’s kingdom is crumbling! God’s kingdom and relationship with us is restored on the cross! How awesome

  44. Antimony says:

Mark 3:5 “After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored”. They had already seen Him do a lot. But they were still so hung up on what they THOUGHT Messiah would look like … that they didn’t believe Him when He was with them. It wasn’t enough. Their unbelief saddened Him!

  45. Leah Janssen says:

It’s amazing to think that He is my true inheritance and all these worldly possessions mean nothing!

    1. lauren says:

agreed! so often we find ourselves chasing after these ‘things’ but in reality none of them matter at all!

  46. Kelly says:

20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.
Wow, I love that it says here that the Lord is my inheritance and portion.

  47. Amber says:

I was reading Barclay’s commentary on Mark today and it was explaining after the calling of the twelve that Christianity was never meant to be practiced alone but always in fellowship a direct contradiction to Pharisees whose name means ” those set apart”. So glad we can live in virtual community together as well as have our physical communities. Thanks for growing with me

    1. Reylena says:

Amber, this part really caught my attention as well! We are in community. We can extend love and fellowship through our communion and connection in Christ.

    2. Angelyn says:

Thanks for sharing, Amber. I’m so thankful for this virtual community as well, as I’m living in a place where I don’t have a lot of Christian fellowship.

  48. Alita Batham says:

As I read the Old Testament, I kept thinking about how much work it took to be right with God back then. All the rules, the clean and unclean. I am so grateful for a Savior who was and is once and for all, enough! I can’t imagine life without Jesus!

    1. Bre says:

I agree completely! It brings out a whole new level of appreciation and thankfulness for Jesus’ sacrifice!

    2. Katie R says:

Yes! Reading all this during the Lent and Easter seasons have highlighted how very great Christ’s sacrifice was!!!

    3. Nadine says:

      Amen!

  49. Brenda says:

    Amen Katie!

  50. Katie R says:

At first, it seemed unfair to me that Aaron and the Levites don’t get any actual inheritance. But the side note in my Bible clarified that he himself is their inheritance. “If they owned property, they’d have to care for it and that would take them away from their priestly duties. They’reset apart and completely dependent on God. And we’re heirs of God! Out inheritance is forgiveness and a place among the redeemed. What is important to you? Take five minutes to reflect on what you have- here and now, and what’s waiting for you in heaven.” SUCH good perspective- earthly goods/inheritances pale in comparison to what we have in Jesus!

  51. Lydia says:

20 Then the Lord said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.

This verse gets me. The Lord was the full inheritance and portion of those that were in the ministry at this time. Not to be confused with a lack of wealth, the blessings that they experienced were directly aligned with both the Presence and Provision from the hand of God.

Jesus also knew that His inheritance was otherworldly. While the religious leaders were furious with His apparent opposition to religious law and duty, Jesus actions and words remind us of where He placed His trust:

35 ‘For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

  52. Jesus always had a reason for why He was who He said he was… Reminds me of the scripture that says always be ready to share the reason you have hope. He didn’t have to do anything to prove Himself, He was the proof!
