Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-25, Leviticus 20:7-8, Romans 5:1-11
This Is the New Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. As we read, we’ll gain a broader understanding of the redemptive story of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture. This week, we will finish reading the General Epistles and move on to Apocalyptic Literature.
The Book of 1 Peter: The book of 1 Peter was written by Peter, one of Jesus’s disciples, to encourage persecuted Gentile Christians living in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He called them to stand firm in their faith, abandoning their idolatrous behavior for righteous living in Christ. First Peter centers around the living hope and new life offered to us in the resurrected Jesus.
How 1 Peter Fits into the Story: First Peter proclaims that believers have a secure heavenly hope and an eternal inheritance. Peter’s message of encouragement in the face of suffering calls us to live lives of love and holiness, glorifying God by imitating Jesus no matter the circumstance.

We will suffer in this life. But that suffering is small and only for a short time in comparison to what we will enjoy in His presence in heaven.

In this life God tells us that we will suffer and grief in many kinds of trials, but through all the suffering, grief, and trials we will rejoice through it. These things have come to prove the genuineness of our faith in God, which is of greater worth than gold that wears out even though it is refined by fire that results in praise, worship, glory also honor. It can happen when the Lord Jesus Christ returns back to earth on a cloud for His bride. God didn’t say that we wouldn’t go through suffering, but what He did promise was that He would be with us through the suffering. Jesus Christ is the living hope for us because He is alive!!!

I was really hoping today’s reading would speak to my situation(s), and it does. Lately I have found myself deeper in hopelessness and despair–not a good response as a believer. The sufferings/trial I (and hubby) am/are experiencing isn’t due to suffering from obedience to God, but it seems to be from earthly consequences from some of my past sin (and probably the sin of others as well) and some self diagnosed mental issues. So it doesn’t seem like it qualifies for righteous suffering, that I could at least be encouraged that it is for the sake of Christ. I know that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him and I cling to that.
Please pray that we would love God with all our hearts, souls, minds and strength. And for endurance, obedience, strength, courage, peace, rest, healing, wisdom, discernment and guidance for both my husband and myself.(I know that is quite a laundry list—thank you so much❤️)

B/c we have security in Christ live righteously and holy before God..even if we may have to face trials still live holy b/c of all that we will gain in Christ.
I find it interesting that I looked to God through the biggest trials of my life, but whine at the smallest things. I want to look to Christ at all times. To show Christ like character through the trials that will come my way.

character of our faith — the testing, the trial of our faith — that is when hard times come will we stand with Christ or not? When Abraham was asked to sacrifice (to kill) his son Isaac, he chose to trust God and obey. Will we do the same? That is what it means to have proven character of Faith to trust and obey when it doesn’t make sense to us.
I can definitely see how this all fits into the redemption plan of God’s because His ways are not our ways so naturally it will take us trusting to see it…even to see it through hardships and trials and temptations. Yet, how else are to we to become holy as He is holy? Spurgeon once said “Great hearts are made by great trials”.

As we go through trials and tests, it strengthens our faith in God. We can share our experiences and give glory to God for how He sustained us through tough times.

Trials and sufferings. No one wants them, yet we cannot escape them. As someone here said, “its not a promise, it’s a fact”. But what do we do when they come? How we respond is important – do we whine, cry, complain or – do we fix our eyes on Jesus, cry out to our heavenly Father, persevere? I’d like to say that I always resort to prayer first and looking to my Father, but I’m sad to say – many times I first respond badly and then later confess the bad reaction I had.
I pray that I will grow to the place where I see every trial, every testing as a place that my faith grows deeper and stronger. A place that in spite of my pain or disappointment I will still be filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy because I am saved by the precious, poured out blood of Jesus. AND because of His shed blood – I have an inheritance reserved for me in heaven, as everyone of you who are in Christ do too.

A TYPO from my Saturday’s comment. My daughter leaves THURSDAY for college move-in. Not today, however I mentioned that on Friday she received a summons for Jury Duty but will not be living in this county as of Thursday. Of course this caused some stress. I will be going in a to work a little later this morning (good thing we have not started with students yet) to be here for support when she makes that call. Most likely (hoping) it can get postponed (summer) and even then she’s only here for a short time before moving. I KNOW God has this!

We love Peter don’t we?! We hear so much about his journey through the other books, and hear, finally we get to hear from him in his own writings! And how good they are! And how coincides so well with Paul’s writings! The comparison today is spot on with trials!
We WILL have many trials in life. Fortunately most of us get to be built up little by little. It’s sad though when young people have hard things before they can make sense of it. Loss of a parent, or abuse, or desertion. That is hard and can often times lead them down bad paths.
But us, that are in Christ, believers- we must cling to the Lord, and realize that he in his 3 short years of ministry would suffer so much. First in criticisms, scorn, and distrust, then to physical abuse, light to extreme, and mental suffering, light to extreme, and emotionally.
Lord and Savior, yet came to suffer, offering us salvation in a way that doesn’t make sense yet it does. And it gives us hope and assurance in our problems from light to extreme. The world is harsh and unfair, raining on the just and unjust. We don’t get a free pass from being believers, YET we get to have HIM every minute with us. We can’t exactly feel it sometimes as we are going through it, but WILL see it clearly at some point or when we get home. We just trust. Like the song “I Trust in God!” King David trusted and sought when it was beyond hard, running for his life. Not easy, not quick, but yet refining, and strengthening and for purpose! For PURPOSE. Oh that’s hard to remember. EVERYTHING is for purpose and will make sense one day. God is working ALL things for the good of those who love him and called for his purposes!
Paul suffered tremendously, Peter suffered, they all did. Danielle and the 3 suffered. Job suffered. Joseph suffered. Why do we not dive into all these examples in the word when we have trials, no- we complain. sigh.
But the prophets knew Jesus was coming, and would give us hope! Hallelujah that we know the living hope that we know the end of the story. We can cling to that in faith. Lord help our faith to be rooted and grounded, therefore creating a firm foundation. Matthew 7:24 Everyone that hears these words of mine AND DOES them, will be like a wise man who builds his house on the rock!” (from memory whoop whoop!) It follows with 25:”The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock”
If we know we are to be Holy as He is holy, we live differently than the world. When we suffer it is a greater testimony of where our faith stands. When we trust in God for the answers and tell others that, we give them something powerful- they don’t understand it, but it will be planted in them for the seeds to sprout later! Are we a testimony to something different from those in the world? We should live everyday as a follower of Jesus Christ. It should be evident. It should be recognizable. Is it? Yes we make mistakes, we sin…but when we know we sin and don’t change that, well, that’s a problem. We should throw off all that hinders us in our walk!
Hebrews 12:1 ““Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
Lord, you give us new mercies everyday, you offer us forgiveness for our wayward ways, let us ask for it! May we come to you in each and every trial that we face. Be with all my She’s that are in the middle of one now- small or big. Be with us to comfort and strengthen, and to move the mountains that look big and daunting. May we be “refined” in the fire, and made to be more like YOU! Help us to be there for others that are facing hard times. Let our intercessions make a difference! We thank you Lord for the knowledge of your word and the Spirit that lives in us guiding and encouraging us, and our sisters in Christ. Thank you in Jesus’ precious and mighty name amen!

The proven character of our faith is the authenticity label. It is the result of our faith being tested and tried, and coming out established and unmoved—because it is real! This only comes as a result of experiencing God’s work of salvation and sanctification personally in our lives! In Christ, that genuineness of faith results in praise, honor, and glory at the return of Jesus, the object of our faith!

The commentary for 1 Peter 1:6-7 in my NLT study Bible says-
Instead of asking “why me?” we should respond to suffering with a new set of responses:
1- confidence that God knows, plans, and directs our lives for the Good. It’s hard to calculate sometimes, but God always provides his love and strength for us. God leads us toward a better future.
2- perseverance, when facing grief, anger, sorrow, and pain. We expressed our grief, but we don’t give into bitterness and despair.
3- courage because with Jesus, as brother and savior, we need not be afraid. He who suffered for us, will not abandon us. Jesus carries us through everything.

The Greek word dokimion (δοκίμιον) (in 1 Pet. 1, vs 7) means a testing, proof, trial, or the genuineness that comes after something is put to the proof. It describes an assay test used for metals or coins to show they are real and pure.
It’s a crucible or furnace, used historically for melting pots that refine silver or gold.
It’s the process, the trial that is the refining forge or testing.mechanism.

The proven character, I understand, is that aw ha moment, the revelation of salvation through Jesus.
v.7 “may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

It feels like to me that 1 Peter 3 is all about redemption – we are born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus, given an imperishable inheritance, and are being guarded by God’s mighty power through all the trials of life that prove our faith is genuine (the outcome of which is the salvation of our souls!!). The prophets of the OT prophesied about this magnificent grace but it has only been fully revealed in Jesus and His suffering sacrifice and resurrection – we have been ransomed from our former futile ways by His precious blood. We then live out a life of gratitude to God and love for others made in His image.

Good morning! Yes, Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith! And our character will be tested. We have seen this in ourselves and others. We have also seen that as Jesus refines our character that He is standing right there with us ready to help us through every tear every trial and cheer us on through every victory ❤️ Hannah.

In life, we all go through stuff, loss, grief, disheartenment(don’t now if that is a word, but it rolled onto the page easily), discouragement, distress! No one is exempt from the trials of life, No-one!

In going through the ‘stuff’ of life, I think ‘proven character’ is how you deal with what is going on.
When you have been tested, in the big, the small, the ugly, your character is built on how you deal with the test, I know I don’t always do the right thing in terms of coming to GOD first,

BUT GOD..

He is first ‘on the scene’ of my troubles, my testing, my hard times. He allows me ‘the whinge’ all the while holding me close, and in that holding He reminds me that He is near.
The bible says in the red letter section, JESUS’S words..”in this world you will have trouble..” this is not a promise, but a fact, it’s how you deal with this trouble..
If you can stand, believe and know that whatever you are going through, you are not alone and that holding fast to Him will carry you through, proven character is being formed, made.
Romans 5:3-4 says..”..we also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, endurance brings GOD’S approval, and His approval creates Hope..”
The next verse goes on to say.. “this Hope does not disappoint us..”
We just need to look up and look within when troubles come, JESUS truly is the best example for us to imitate, HE went to the cross, not for what He had done, but for what WE had! He gave us a Hope in all circumstances through His actions..
