What Is Hospitality, Really?

Romans 12:9-13, Matthew 9:9-13, Matthew 19:13-14

Text: Romans 12:9-13, Matthew 9:9-13, Matthew 19:13-14

Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
– Romans 12:13, NIV

I’m a nervous pinner. In fact, it may be accurate to say I have Pinterest-related anxiety.

My Pinterest activity has been sporadic at best, save for the three nights after I discovered the internet wonder and stayed up until 2 a.m. pinning my little heart out.

My problem is not the internet or the amazing ideas it holds. My problem is that Pinning Amanda and Real-Life Amanda have very little in common. Pinning Amanda is all about more — more recipes she’ll never make, more crafts her kids will never do, more design ideas than any human being could ever incorporate into an actual home with actual people who live within an actual budget. Real-Life Amanda is just trying to feed her family something other than cereal for dinner.

It’s easy to forget that “most” doesn’t equal “best,” isn’t it?

When I hear the word “hospitality,” I think about all the wrong things. I think about those amazing four-layer cakes in Southern Living magazine. I remember the women in my small, Alabama hometown who know how to throw an impeccable wedding shower. I imagine the impressive meals I’ll host for my friends one day when my life is less messy and chaotic, more orderly and magazine-esque. In short, I think about all the reasons hospitality does not fit into to my real, right-now life.

I hear my world telling me that hospitality demands more.
Meanwhile, my life feels like less.

And then I open the Bible.

I read about Jesus sitting around a table with the shunned and the sinners in Matthew 9.
I see Him in John 4, sharing well water and conversation with a woman everyone else ignored.
In Matthew 19, I watch Him invite—not just tolerate—the presence of little children and the beautiful distraction they bring.

When I look at Jesus, our culture’s false definition of hospitality as dinner invitations and etiquette, clean homes and casseroles, pales in light of the bold example of the most radically welcoming person who’s ever lived.

In Jesus we see that hospitality begins in the heart.

After all, the Gospel applies here, too. We’re all rag-tag sojourners being welcomed in by the Creator, sinners being redeemed by the Savior. No one was more hospitable than Jesus, and we can only extend true hospitality in Jesus.

But how? If all those party planning and design ideas on my PInterest boards don’t look true hospitality, then what does?

Lean in close with us these next 13 days as we rediscover the true definition of biblical hospitality, as we dig deep into God’s Word together and learn from the example of Jesus Christ, our radically hospitable Host.

May He change the posture of our hearts to look more like His.

The Hospitality reading plan was created by She Reads Truth in collaboration with our friends at Allume, a conference that gathers women to connect, learn, grow, and be refreshed as they bring the hope of Jesus to the world through their spheres of influence. The plan features guest writing from Logan Wolfram, Allume Executive Director, as well as author and Allume co-host, Sarah Mae, and author Annie F. Downs.

  1. Tiffany says:

This is absolutely beautiful! Very well said. It spoke to my heart. I love to open my home to people and there have been many times my heart says invite and then my mind says, “Really, you didn’t pull the weeds along the walk way, you didn’t dust this week, you don’t have anything special prepared and last you checked, the dog hadn’t been to the groomers lately”! Awe but this my sister in Christ speaks to my mind! Thank you for sharing.

  2. Jamie K says:

What an amazing concept that the man who walked the desert, who had no possessions or home was the greatest example of hospitality. How have we gotten this concept so wrong for so long. Lord help us to put aside our distorted view of hospitality and teach us what it means to welcome people into our heart and ultimately into yours!

  3. emily says:

my family is beginning the house hunt process and I find myself on pintrest often! I hope this study can help ground me and keep me focused on the right things! my home will always be chaotic and not worthy of a magazine, but if Christ is centered there and we welcome people in, that will be the images God wants!

  4. Rhonda says:

New to the group, looking forward to it

  5. SarahBeth says:

What a beautiful call from Jesus. To live without limit

  6. Rachel says:

It’s so easy to get caught up in trying to impress people rather than serve them. This was a great reminder.

    1. Megan says:

Yes!! True hospitality – giving & showing mercy rather than “look at what I can do.” It’s not about me and my “sacrifice.”

  7. melissa says:

Hello! Found you on Pinterest and I love your message on hospitality! I’m sharing it with my fellow sisters in Christ in Hospitality Team. THANK YOU FOR SHARING and God bless!

I’m a hospitality management major and so excited to see the biblical side of hospitality and applying that to my life!!

  9. Valerie says:

I’m a newbie and this is my first She Reads Truth devotional. I’m so exicted!

  10. jessica says:

So excited to dig into this. xo

  11. Shelly says:

This is my first She Reads Truth devotional and I’m very excited about it. I’ve heard such great things about it.

I decided to do the hospitality devotional first because I serve in numerous areas at church. I’m a Youth leader, I teach children’s church, toddlers & nursery, I also greet, sit at the welcome desk and handle our little café/coffee area. (Not all the same day, of course ) I have confidence in myself through JESUS in every area except children’s church. I struggle with that area often. Anyway, I’m hoping GOD will use this devotional to remove that “struggle”.

    thanks for having me!!!!

    1. Kelly says:

Shelly, I just started the Hospitality devotional today. I have done other She Reads Truth studies and have been totally blessed. Today’s lesson reminds me that hospitality is not something we fake or DO it is a matter of our heart. Praying that our hearts will be made more like Jesus through this study of God’s word!

  12. New Kiratu Joseph says:

    this is truly amazing

  13. faithannetoo says:

This is a different way for me to look at hospitality. I am excited to get into this study.

  14. Jessica says:

I know I’m late to this study, but hospitality is something so foreign to me. not because I don’t desire to be hospitable but because I literally don’t have one single friend. my husband and I have been married for a year and the only person that ever comes over is my mom. I wish I had more people to invite over but I just don’t know who to invite. I pray that God opens my eyes and shows me who I can be hospitable to in a tangible way. I would love to cook for someone!

    1. Michaela says:

      What about a neighbor?

    2. Kristi says:

Hey Jessica! I can relate to where you’re coming from. I understand the longing to have a group of people who are easy to invite over and take turns cooking and laughing and sharing stories. However, I’ve learned over the past few years that if I want to have people in my home or develop friendships, I have to take the initiative to make it happen. Sometimes this means inviting a couple over that we barely know (they wouldn’t make the classification of friends, just acquaintance) and getting to know them. Sometimes this leads to a friendship and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it means having people that are like-minded into my home knowing they won’t become close friends but wanting to serve them anyway. I’d encourage you to have the mindset of it being on you to invite someone..it has really changed my life! Some ideas may be you or your husband’s coworkers, a couple or family from church that you’ve met, neighbors, someone you’ve met at an exercise group or the like..

  15. Keren Burdick says:

I am excited to start this study as I brhin the new year!

  16. Ruthann says:

huh. I’ve never thought about hospitality that way. Christ had no home to share but he was definitely hospitable. That’s food for thought.

    1. Kelly says:

What a good point! His heart was hospitable to all. I am excited to see what God is going to teach me about His heart through this study about hospitality.

  17. Kennedy Chapman says:

I just wanted to thank you guys for what you do by writing these beautiful and inspiring blogs. I am a first year student away from home and it has been a challenging couple of months adjusting – going from a home full of community to one where I know no one. I couldn’t even sit through a church service without crying because Sundays, a day of family, love, and Jesus back home, where so lonely here. Only by the grace of God and so many prayers from both myself and friends and family back home was I am to find some community here. Since then I have fallen into a comfortable routine of things and I simply lived day to day, feeling as though I needed God less. This weekend I was hit with a wake up call when chatting with some friends attending bible school. I need Jesus now more that ever – despite my comfort. And so I have taken it upon myself to read the word of God everyday. I have chosen your hospitality study because I want to make myself open to those around me. I want to have an influence on the students, profs and patients (I’m a nursing student) I meet. So thank you once again for being a source where I can learn and know what I’m reading is good and true. You do a wonderful job and I love reading your devotionals.

  18. Jane Smith says:

This study is such a gift God gifted me with a hospitality team and now I can help them learn true hospitality through this study.
God has shown me that true hospitality is evidence of faith to unbelievers. How amazing is that!! Praying that our eyes and hearts are open to meet people’s true deep needs. X

  19. Tamara says:

So thankful to be doing this study. I have always had an open to love purple and just get to know them more, no matter what the setting. While growing up in a smaller house than my friends, which was constantly dirty and full of toys, I watched my mom as she graciously said yes to babysitting her friends’ kids and having people over for games and food. She taught me how to be hospitable without the finesse and it’s definitely carried over into my adult life. I make it a point to get to know people and be hospitable with out a home but with my heart.

  20. Heather says:

I always felt that a hospitable heart was something gifted to me by God to use for his glory. I’m excited to learn what that truly means and already glad it doesn’t involve the perfect dinner party!

  21. Rebekah says:

As I prepare to start my life as a married woman in just 5 short months, I’m excited to learn how I can biblically build my home to welcome ALL who need a friend. I’m so excited to start this devotion over the next couple weeks. Praying we all receive huge blessings through this. :)

  22. cilla says:

I’m a nurse and it’s interesting to consider how I might be able to incorporate what I learn here into my nursing care as well : )

  23. cilla says:

    hospitality begins in the heart.

  24. Jillian Willet says:

Being surrounded in a close church family, there isn’t much chance of hospitality for the ‘tax collectors and sinners’ but I want to be better about opening up my home and heart to my friends who do not know Jesus as well. I believe this devotion will help me dissolve walls that have been built ❤️

  25. Christina says:

I fell away from God for nearly a year now, and ready before then I wasn’t as big of a believer as I made myself out to be. On my journey back to God, I’m so happy to have found SRT. This was the perfect series for me personally right now, I can’t wait for day two tomorrow!

    1. Amie says:

So happy you’re here, Christina! I think we can all relate in some way. Thankfully, we serve a loving a God who welcomes you back always with open arms!

  26. Mel says:

As an event coordinator, I feel like my life revolves around hospitality. Lately, I have felt used and abused by the industry. Thank you for the reminder of what true hospitality really is.

  27. Tera Ann says:

I get so caught up in life that I never get around to practicing hospitality. I was recently at a funeral for my 14 year old daughters friend and I just kept thinking that it is so sad that the only time we really strive to get together and really fellowship is when tragedy strikes.

  28. Audrey says:

At the right time. Thanks looking forward to read the rest of the topics.

  29. Melissa Clark says:

Praise God for his word going out in this unique format! Praying that God will continue to bless your ministry.

  30. Roxanne says:

This is a great way to gear up and get ready for our next season of connect groups, especially for me as a host. looking forward to the next 12days.

    1. Julie says:

Roxanne, me too! I’m going to be hosting a Bible study in my home starting in August. I want to do it God’s way, not my way!

  31. Elizhoefs says:

This is so good! I can’t wait to finish this study!

  32. Rachele says:

  33. Stephanie Cumbie says:

you hit bottom line in a very real way. thank you for the reminder of what Christ did.

  34. Linda B. says:

one person in my life that excels at hospitality has an extremely messy house, tiny kitchen with no counter space. She doesn’t let it stop her and I love spending time around the dinner table with her. it isn’t about the picture perfect table or the beautiful home, it is about loving her friends and making them feel welcome.

  35. So excited to begin this study! we just developed a hospitality team at our church and I am excited to see how this study might support our ideas and plans.

  36. aurorasgirl♡ says:

just started this…. a bit late but I’m sure like it..

    1. So glad you are here, friend!

      xoxo-Kaitlin

  37. Hayley says:

So good! Being from the Deep South, hospitality is not connected to the heart, but rather how tall you can get the meringue on your lemon ice box pie! This is going to be a great study plan!

  38. Patricia says:

wow! This is my first time with you…I know it will add the perfect piece to the puzzle of my life. Thank God!

  39. Hannah says:

I am by nature not a hospitable person. It gives me great anxiety! I must work on this, as I do strive to be like Christ!

  40. Chivon Yvette says:

I have to apply this to my life. Being open and inviting is scary because it creates vulnerability BUT The Lord did not give us a spirit of Fear…. so although it is easier to have walls up to protect yourself, living like that is not only unbiblical it’s also a very lonely life!

  41. Sami says:

Just read the sample and have already been reminded that I used to be hospitable in the heart and now I’m really not very! Need to get in line with what God thinks!

  42. Jessica says:

Wow!!! This so really beautiful to read… I just pray that every single person that reads this may be blessed too.. That they may find joy in being a blessing to others, in whatever that may look like…

  43. Ingrid says:

I have felt the Lord tug at my heart to invite women over specifically that need rest – yet it causes me great anxiety. Last night I prayed for him to encourage and lead me more if He wanted this of me, then I stumble upon this! Thank you for helping me to be obedient!

  44. Jen says:

thank you. this brought tears to my eyes with a sense of relief. I don’t have to feel pressured to be the perfect host to be hospitable.

  45. Sarah Taylor says:

This is a great study! I would also recommend watching a message by Jenn Johnson called The Heart of Hospitality. It’s so good!!

  46. Denise Duke says:

    Great encouragement!

  47. Tiffany says:

I’ve been over come with a need to better and serve myself that I have not extended a hand or prayer to another soul. My prayer is that I will use this study to learn what hospitality is and how I can incorporate it in my own life.

  48. Jennifer says:

the people young. young readers to lol

  49. emiliekayv says:

I'm really looking forward to starting this with my sister! SRT you rock :)

  50. Samantha says:

Truthfully, I’ve felt myself become obsessive over how clean and organized my home is. I no longer have people over due to the anxiety involved with hosting. I’m ready for god to teach me what hospitality really is.

  51. Lauren says:

I’ve never discovered hospitality of the heart. Jesus help us to shed our pride of being perfect and put on humbleness and love.

  52. Lea says:

I’m in need for a better view, a more biblical view of being a Jesus hostess in my actions not words and have that heart of truly welcoming those that need it.

  53. I am excited to start this devotion. Hospitality is something I think I struggle with as it gets really easy to just do my own thing all the time and not branch out and pull others in!

  54. Eliza says:

Hospitality– a great devotional for anyone, and I thought, fitting for a Chick-fil-a worker! Just started day 1, and really looking forward to seeing what Christ will reveal throughout the rest of the devotional.

  55. Katie Zuniga says:

I am excited for this devotional because I am just beginning my study on hospitality. I am leading a session on this with a friend at the Northwest Baptist Convention Women’s Summit 2015. Finding this devotional was perfect timing!

  56. Britney says:

I’m really excited about this study. Hospitality is something I love to do, but I often struggle with doing it for my glory and not pointing to Jesus. My prayer for this study is that he opens my heart to HIS view on hospitality toward everyone.

  57. Tabitha says:

My favorite verses on the first day I actually read a reading plan (Mt 9:12-13). Enjoying your app so far.

  58. Erin Rasch says:

“Let the little children come to me…” Sometimes I struggle with my 9 month old and hosting different things at my house. A lot of my friends think he should be with a sitter or go to grandmas while they’re there, however my husband and I like him to stay and learn how to behave. (He really is a good boy!) God doesn’t want us to close our lives to children, but open them so we can teach them his love and show them who He is!

    1. Britney says:

Are you the first of your friends to have kids? Of course he is with you!!! He’s your child! I think that’s a good decision. How else Is he going to learn to be a good grown up, if not from you. :)

  59. Candi says:

Honor one another above yourselves. This plan came at just the right time me. I’m struggling with being hospitable to my husband’s family. Our situation is complicated and I often withdraw when uncomfortable. Family is important to him. I need to honor him above myself.

  60. This really opened my eyes to what real hospitality is… embracing others in love & showing them who our Savior really is

  61. Mikella says:

Hospitality really speaks to me because I am currently in college to become a registered nurse. I feel like one of my gifts is being able to give and help others in need. So I’m excited to read this series and learn more.

  62. Chandler says:

I’ve never really took the time to learn what hospitality is.. This is the perfect beginning to a wonderful series. Hospitality, like everything else, begins in Jesus. What a blessing.

  63. Rebecca Welch says:

As a senior in high school looking to study hospitality, I thought this would be a great study to start on in this app! “…we can only extend true hospitality in Jesus.”

    1. Megan Birmingham says:

Rebecca, I just finished my hospitality degree last May! You will love it! Biblical hospitality is definitely different than what our culture has made it to be and I pray you will be a light of hope and love wherever you study and work!!

  64. I absolutely love this… “May He transform the posture of my heart#

  65. Britt says:

I’m going to teach on this topic in my middle school bible class at school tomorrow. Hospitality is more than just inviting someone to your house. It is inviting that person into your world and serving them, no matter what the cost, and no matter what they have done. It is applicable to them as well. We are thankful for SHE READS TRUTH to inspire our studies. Thank you!

  66. Katie Harris says:

I’m so glad I decided to join this study. Today has been a doozy and I’ve felt so wrapped up in my own problems, to-do lists, and worries. I wasn’t laying my burdens down at His feet.

  67. Monica says:

Today begins with opening our hearts to seeing hospitality as something other than planning perfect get-togethers.
I often say no to welcoming others into my home but today I will be saying yes to hosting some of the children traveling from Africa to sing at our church and it’s ok that my house isn’t Pinterest perfect. Timely message for me this morning.

  68. Sarah says:

Im struck by God’s forever hospitality towards me. Taking my sickness, lie believing heart, my burdens, and welcoming me into a life with Him.

  69. Amber Kotasek says:

There is something so special about sharing the word of God. This redefines the meaning of hospitality and brings it back to what it is supposed to mean. Living with and accepting others in the name is Jesus Christ

  70. mico says:

I absolutely love this study!! a bunch of young adults come to my house on sundays after church.. and I just gave birth to an infant.. who is now 3 months (yay) so I have been on maternity leave (yay) but it has been hard juggling people and baby.. but then I know that God wants me to be hospitable.. and I want to too!! but I just needed direction! So I am so blessed that there is a study like this! It does start at the heart.

And with Super Bowl sunday coming up.. I definitely need this! haha

OH LORD PLEASE CHANGE MY HEART!

  71. Chrissy says:

I was raised in a home where appearances mattered so my life had to be neat and tidy at all times whether I liked it or not. This was not bad training, I just never felt like as a child, I could relax in my own home or I was going to “make a mess.” Later, when I got married, I found out my heart was a mess and that was the first room that needed cleaning. When that came into order, I was set free from keeping appearances. It was then that the Holy Spirit could move through me in my home or through a meal shared. As an older woman, raised in a different generation, it’s important that we pass on only the truth of God’s word to our daughters and those we mentor, leaving the unnecessary bondage on the chopping block.

  72. Casey Lyn says:

This is an eye opener for me. I am Filipino. And the way my mom was raised is to always clean the house and cook food when visitors come by our households. I thought this was always the case. But, it doesn't have to be that way. The way I see hospitality is enjoying each others company, and fellowshipping (sharing God's word and getting to know each other more).

I'm a young college kid and haven't really experience REAL life. And for the most of my life, I've "avoided" non-Christians. Meaning, I try not to associate with many, and not to bring them over. But to be a Christian, it is the opposite of that. and that's what I fail to realize for the longest time and I am in an effort to live a life as to that.

  73. Momwife says:

what an interesting and refreshing way to experience Christ beyond typical bible study. I love that we are able to interact and be an encouragement to one another! Blessings to you all!

  74. julialikesu says:

what a humbling and convicting first day of study. I identified with every single thing she said, right down to pinning anxiety.

    1. Julia, so glad we are in this together! Praying for you as you study hospitality!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  75. Beth D says:

I missed this study :( to study in community is a wonderful thing! When I was a new Christian I would pray that God would give me the gift of hospitality. I'm not sure why I prayed this prayer since God has made me an introvert. Something about community intrigued me and drew me in. Maybe it was my lack of community growing up and/or that truly God has made us all for community, even introverts! Whatever the case, when I was on my own (not living in the home that I grew up anymore) I simply looked up books (pre-internet with all the wonderful resources at our fingertips) on hospitality and read diligently in the Bible about it as well. And I set out to practice hospitality even if it wasn't my "gift".

After 3 decades of simply trying to love people in my home and out of my home, to help them feel wanted, to help them feel not overlooked, my friends know me as the one who practices hospitality. I still don't think of it as my gift. It has become a lifestyle, but I want to be better.

And so,even though I have missed studying as part of a community, I'm going to go through this 13 day study on my own.

Thank you so much for archiving it!

    1. Hi Beth! So happy to have you here! Praying for you as you study hospitality!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  76. Dawn says:

Just realized that She Reads Truth had an Android app after hearing about the Apple app for so long. Downloaded the app today and saw this study. Hospitality is one of two words I am focusing on this year, so this study is perfect timing! Looking forward to going through it!

  77. Jordan Miller says:

I just began this plan and I’m already enjoying it! Just as a quick testimony, I purchased lunch for a classmate the other day. What sounds like a good gesture was really seen as a burden in my eyes. I feel like I could have missed my blessing because I did not give cheerfully! I’m glad that I saw that we are supposed to give earnestly to the saints so they never go without. Great lesson!

    Best,
    Jordan

  78. Annie says:

I am excited to read more abou hospitality!to find out more about how I can serve people around me better. greetings from the Czech Repuplic:)

  79. Christina says:

I aspire to be a southern belle. I think that’s been my lot in life but I’ve been too focused on the wrong side of hospitality and not on the right side. Hoping this plan shows me how His way of being hospitable and my way can merge into one.

  80. Mary says:

    Excited to begin this study!!!

    1. So glad you\’re here, Mary! We love having you in our community!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  81. Alice says:

this study has really opened my eyes to see the way that we have to accept who we and the people around us are and our identities make us up no matter What we look like. in the kingdom of god we are all equal!

  82. Goddess Eunique says:

    I want to learn hospitality

  83. Sherri says:

I’m really looking forward to learning more about Jesus’ meaning of Hospitality. My words for 2015 is “Love Well”. Not sure what Hospitality will look like in my life this year, but excited to see how the Lord designs it to be…

  84. Debbie Gonzalez says:

I love the encouragement we receive through this devos to be more and more like our savior and look at the heart of the matter…. out heart and it’s root!!!!

  85. abba says:

I’m excited to start this study, I love cooking but finding there’s more to hospitality than food!

  86. Courtney K. says:

I love the “hospitality behind in the heart.” It is so true and I always need reminded of this. I’m so excited to be joining this and learning about the biblical definition of hospitality.

  87. Hope says:

I am so excited for the study, I too find myself getting so wrapped up and busy creating the perfect place to host people -to welcome them to my home. I am frequently making excuses for why it’s never good enough or never ready rather than focusing on the true heart of hospitality and welcoming people into our lives not just a place where we reside. My life is in Christ and not in the Pinterest perfect living room I try to create. (Even though I find great joy in praising God for crafts – I truly enjoy them)

  88. Laura Bonnoitt says:

I needed this study! hosting my in laws for thanksgiving and desiring to not be in “hostess” mode all week. thank you for this study!

  89. Jennifer says:

looking forward to reading God’s word on this…with the holidays approaching and the desire to be hospitable, I want to learn to look around my home and not see the dust or the legos or the frayed couch cushions but to invite and love on people as we anticipate Christ’s birth. I am a new reader and looking forward to it! Blessings…

  90. LOstendorff says:

Such truth spoken in such love! I needed to hear this today as life seems out of control and we keep “waiting for life to slow down” knowing full well that it never will. Living life in the moment and welcoming people into our chaos is the best we can do and it’s what Jesus did. He didn’t create the perfect setting for people to spend time with him, he was simply welcoming and there and invites you to participate in life with Him!

  91. I wish I remember where I read it, but I recently read a blog post about hosting and the blogger commented that hospitality matters how present you are when the guest s are present, far more than how well you’ve prepared. I don’t know why, but I spend so much time preparing I often am far too exhausted to be present during the actual hosting. this season, I hope to change that.

  92. Mendy Thomas says:

I just started this too! I am excited to see if I can get rid of my “I’m just not ready” attitude:)

  93. Ashley Branch says:

It reminds me of the Mary and Martha- how easy it is to get lost in the prepping and execution of events and meals that the beauty and richness of Christ and fellowship is diminished. Jesus welcomed all and setting, food and decoration was never an issue. Fellowship with one another, the opening of our homes and hearts to our brothers and sister and those seeking Christ is what hospitality is to me. But oh how easy it is to try to impress those around us or feel that things have to be executed in such a way.

    1. I thought of Mary and Martha as well! I definitely have the Martha complex…seeking satisfaction in the preparation of an event, making stuff every detail is perfectly placed…and not sitting closely invested in my guests. Praying to change my heart in that

  94. Kelcie says:

I'm starting this study a couple weeks late but I am really excited about it. When I think of "hospitality," I think of my MIL. She has always been so good at having anyone and everyone into her home, whipping up a hot meal for them, and inviting them to stay. I, like Amanda, sometimes feel like that definition (and the one portrayed through Pinterest) is impossible with my current, chaotic, raising-little-ones, life. I'm excited to learn from Jesus what true hospitality means…

  95. Kaleigh says:

I have never thought about hosting the heart. It sheds a whole new light on caring for others! What a great way to think about it. So excited for this study!

  96. Jordana says:

This is so sanctifying! I know I get caught up in table settings, when I need to focus on how to set my heart.

    1. Kaleigh says:

      I’m with you, Jordana!

  97. Leslee says:

“Trying not to eat cereal for dinner…” I soooo hear that. Haha! I’m excited about this study and expectant with what The Lord will do to transform my heart. Maybe more guests will bless my threshold instead a closed door of excuses.

  98. Shannonrose26 says:

I just learned about you guys so I’m joining the party late….hope that’s OK. I’ll endeavor to get caught up this weekend. I’m very excited!!

  99. Shemma says:

I have long thought my favourite hospitable peeps were not the most elaborate but the ones who made you feel loved and at home. It’s precious to see that put into words for me and not left as just a ‘feeling’ in my head/heart.

  100. We get all concerned about the outward, the table settings, our home in general but in reality it is the gathering around the table sharing a meal as we tentatively let ourselves be known that matters. Nothing needs to be perfect when we choose to love and open our hearts and homes to others.

  101. Mervin says:

I'm not sure if I'm the only guy who is commenting but who cares. I know society usually for the most part sees hosting and hospitality as a female job, however, I am glad we will be looking at Jesus as an example. I saw this link on a friends page on Facebook and I believe it came at a perfect time.

I have a friend (was an associate and only have gotten to know in a a deeper level in the past few months; MANY similarities) who lost his job and with his wife being a stay home mom I know it has to be overwhelming. I know because I have been there. Anyhow, I felt the need to offer them our home. I know it came from God because never would I have thought of adding 3 more people to our home of already family of 5. Though they have not accepted yet it was a blessing to see how much they were grateful for it. God pressed in me to share some scriptures with them before the offer; one of them being Galatians 6:10, which states, "Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith."

I think we owe it to our Christian members to honor them in meeting needs that we can and unfortunately they cannot. I don't mention any of this for my own glory, but for His. I hope through this study my family is able to continue to be a blessing to them as well as anyone who enters our home. Let's set ourselves to serve as Jesus served.

  102. Marii says:

Hej I just started and I’m so happy about the possibility of being connected to all of you Ladies. I really hope for us all to open wide to the blooming love that God is offering to us and trough us.

  103. Abigail Walker says:

Wonderful! Reminds me of the worship song, “Come As You Are”. It’s hard to think of opening your home when you’re too young to own one, but if hospitality begins in the heart, then everyone can participate!

  104. Carleeh M. says:

how true this is! I have aleays envisioned hospitality the same way Amanda! After living in Ga for 10 years you learn that southern charm of feeding people and fellowship! Man I tell you what I miss it! I loved setting up for company and making a dinner table look presentable, but my life was less than presentable then. I was full on fake. God knew that all that comfort was sinking me into warm and cozy firey pit. I am so thankful for that time, it truely was the time of my so called life but the happiness wasnt in the Lord it was in the world. Now there isnt much comfort or fellowship, but I know my soul is the Father’s alone. It can be kinda loney being faithful and disowning the worldly pleasurable life. I know hospitality is for those who need that mess or perfection to come to light or have no clue they are in a entertaining quick sand. May God show us all through this study what his purpose for our relationships is!

  105. I know I am late getting started, but after Allume I have had this desire not just to open the doors on my blog but my home as well. This is difficult for me as I have two special needs kids. I never know what the day is going to bring. I never know if the mess I cleaned up will just be strewn about once again by a three old with autism. I am learning to open my door and let them in, show love the best I know how and if he is too much for them it’s ok.

  106. Leísy says:

This hits home. I was raised in a family that had broken free of the OC “Keeping Up Appearances” style; though extended family and one sister are still very much ingrained in it. My mother did a great job of shielding us from materialism, but I still felt the pressure in preparing a perfect home with perfect china and themed meal plans. It’s beautiful, but I wanted to know how to go beyond the inadequacies of never attaining Pinterest Perfection and learn to “host the heart.” I’m really looking forward to this study!

  107. Kendra Tuinstra says:

I am beyond thankful to finally have this app on my phone. I’ve been waiting ever so patiently and downloading this has easily been the highlight of my week! I will graduate next month with a degree in Hospitality and was so excited to see this study on She Reads Truth. Learning more about the most hospitable person ever makes my heart warm and gives me the assurance that in a difficult world and industry, this is where He wants me to be. So grateful.

    1. Britney says:

Where did you get a degree in hospitality? That sounds like a dream to me!!! What does that mean? I’m so intrigued!

  108. Blaine says:

A little late starting the plan, but it has already gotten me fired up! Hospitality is something that is important to me and I am so excited about beginning this study. My prayer for today comes from the devotional, that He will change and continue to change the posture of my heart to look more like His. Thank you Jesus for your PERFECT example of hospitality in the simplest of ways.

  109. GinnyC says:

So so thankful to start this study today. Hospitality is so important to me but I am terrible at it. I love hosting but my house is always, and I mean always, a wreck. I still invite them over. And although, I’m willing to be vulnerable and invite people in to our chaos, I too stress over all the things I should be providing for our guests like a cleared off set table, more than a glass of water to drink (I often forget to offer a cup of tea or coffee), appetizers while they wait on my always late dinner, a floor uncovered with toys and so on. If I open the door for them in stead of yelling “Come in!”, it is often with an apology for the state of my house instead of greeting. Again, I still invite them over.

I’ve been reading The Nesting Place by Myquillyn Smith and it had been so good at helping me finding the beauty within my own home instead of comparing to all the picture perfect homes I see in mags, Pinterest or Houzz. It is helping me celebrate the quirks, the worn and loved aspects of my home, it’s uniqueness, even the messes from four young children, pets and two overly busy parents. The most important discovery is realizing it’s purpose.

With this Hospitality study I am hoping to rediscover my purpose, loving people where they are at and inviting them in. I am so good at starting things and not finishing them especially studies such as this. I pray that the distractions of my crazy family, my business or laziness will not get in between me taking this journey with you and God. I pray this for us all. I am so very excited to dig in with you and Jesus and see and hear the scripture come to life. :)

  110. I was JUST reading in another book two days ago about biblical hospitality, and ever since, can’t get it off my mind… and so when I saw this study was up tonight I HAD TO get it and try to catch up. I feel like God is trying to teach me something! Very excited for how he’s going to use the study!

    1. Britney says:

      What book was it?

  111. Michelle Tiler says:

I am excited to start this reading! I move and this will help me continue my reading.

  112. “In Jesus we see that hospitality begins in the heart.” YES! I’ve been thinking about what hospitality means with four littles, but determined it was impossible in this season of littles. Until Allume. Looking forward to catching up and doing this series!!

  113. I’m a little late to the game (just got the new android app!) but I’m looking forward to this study. To digging out the what ifs and discovering that what is and what can be of hospitality – especially as the holidays approach.

  114. Ana Rute Cavaco says:

    true!

  115. Hilary says:

It’s true! What I see as distracting time suckers, Jesus saw kingdom candidates! How foolish I have been many times.

  116. Chelsea says:

I am so excited to begin this plan! Especially with the holiday season, I want our home and hearts to welcome people in and love them like Jesus.

  117. Hospitality begins in the heart. I love this phrase. It is true and we should live by it. If everything is accepted in the heart everything will turn out just fine. I love your article and I would like to share this to my friends as well. God bless us all.

  118. Hannah says:

It’s my first time using this app and doing a bible study with She Reads Truth. I am so excited! I saw it on Instagram and was immediately intrigued! I’ve been looking for a women’s devotion! Can’t wait to learn more about hospitality! I’ve really been working on loving others- especially those who I don’t know or may not have anything in common with- I want to be hospitable to them too. :)

  119. Sasha-Shae says:

Awesome start. I look forward to the rest of it! Hospitality definitely does begin with and requires Jesus for us to execute it well.

  120. Tiffani says:

Okay, I but the bullet and am diving into this study. I can’t wait to see what the Lord brings from all this.

  121. Chrisy says:

Sometimes I feel like hospitality is what I was made for. Actually, I feel like that all the time. And not real hospitality. But the cute, pinterest, party planning, Martha Stewart kind of hospitality. Like I can't have anyone over unless the house looks like a magazine.

I heard a sermon recently from Ben Stuart on Philippians – The World in Checkmate (which I recommend!) that said "What is the thing that if I took it from you right now – you would say, 'I just lost me. You took me. My identity, my reason for living."
Immediately what came to mind was my craft. "Creative Chrisy" and how if I didn't have these sets of skills … where would I be? What would I be known as? It frightens me to think how much investment I've put in this area and also worries me on how much I'm using these gifts for me or for Jesus (if at all).
My prayer throughout these next few weeks is that my heart is to serve the Lord in all these areas and that my inviting people in isn't for me and myself looking good but to remember that it's for Jesus and it's because it's what He would do.

  122. Jeri Taira says:

Thank you so much for taking the pressure off. I totally connected with these words:

“When I hear the word “hospitality,” I think about all the wrong things. I think about… one day when my life is less messy and chaotic, more orderly and magazine-esque. In short, I think about all the reasons hospitality does not fit into to my real, right-now life.”

  123. Sarah Roeder says:

Diving in a bit late, but feeling my heart cracking open to take this all in. Having grown up in a home where the hosting of events caused nothing but stress and anxiety and eventually a doing away with hosting any event, I’ve strived to *not* be that way. Unfortunately, with four children 7 and under including a newborn, I’m now feeling myself more and more “inhospitable” because of the demands of our family. Looking forward to breaking away from that again!

  124. Traci84 says:

I find it can be difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone and be more like Jesus. I struggle with this daily and have always been more of an introvert. But through faith and prayer I believe God will supply me with the boldness to invite others in and meditate on His gospel. Our time here is about serving and welcoming others even strangers just as Jesus did. I ask God to posture my heart to be more hospitable and share His everlasting love. I ask you all lovely ladies to pray for me.

  125. rachelmidd says:

I love that this is coming right before all the big holidays. I get stressed out every year with gifts, money, parties, decorations and entertaining people. I guess it shows me that the things that are causing stress with hospitality are because I've either made it about myself and what I can do, or I've just tried to do too much on my own. This series will be a good reminder that hospitality is about really inviting people into my life like jesus did and being able to be interrupted by real people and relationships like jesus did, not doing more and making things "look pretty" on the outside (although I enjoy a little bit of that).

  126. Elizabeth says:

My grandmother is visiting from Cuba and she always seems to dampen our moods because she's always saying "no" or always feeling sick when we are all happy. However, after reading this I am very inspired to make her time here as pleasant as possible. Not because of what she'll say or think about me if I don't, but because Jesus Christ makes me feel welcome and loved at all times even though I have the worst attitude to His loving hands and Amazing Grace. What an eye opener! Thanks Amanda!

  127. Rosangela says:

Is there a digital pack for this plan? It would be very nice for the ones who live overseas.

  128. Melissa says:

"Outdo one another in showing honor." – Romans 12:10

Extending mercy and grace to others reflects a hospitable posture of the heart – not a Pinterest-perfect home or meal. Special touches are wonderful if the motivation of my heart is to indeed "outdo one another in showing honor". But usually my motivation is to garner the adoration and praise of people with my cleverness or presentation. In so doing, I have stolen the adoration and glory that belongs to Jesus. Ugh! :(
The Word and this study pierced my heart tonight. It revealed my sinful motivation and turned me to confession and repentance, and a restored relationship with my Savior. Such a precious gift. I can't thank you enough.

  129. Nadine says:

Yes. This! I’m excited for this plan. Please punch my hostess heart with the gospel!

  130. This is my first SRT study and I am so excited to join! Hospitality is such a vital aspect of our faith and I cannot wait to learn more!

  131. Taylor says:

so glad to be joining this group! and ecstatic for this being my first study.

  132. Katelyn says:

I feel like The Lord has been teaching me so much about hospitality the last couple of months. I’m so excited to jump into this study!!

  133. Emily says:

This comes at just the right time! I'm currently praying for a Woman's only household to live in. This is to be a place of ministry through hospitality. So thankful I get to learn what hospitality really is before that!

  134. Kate says:

I am so excited for this new study. I completely relate to the Pinterest and think of my Southern upbringing when i think of hospitality, but it is so much more than that. I can't wait to learn more about hospitality through Jesus's eyes.

  135. Mirna says:

Loving the study already. Thank you. I believe we start by inviting Jesus into our hearts and home and then everything else falls into place. I love having guests over, learned it from my parents and my I laws also have had ministry students living with them. We all have struggles and I pray God will contine to finish his work in me. Praying for guidance from the Lord on having a foreign exchange student living with us in the future. God bless you all.

  136. Sarah Beals says:

First time to your blog, but I am a lover of hospitality, and am going to love reading along with you! :)

  137. Virginia says:

So timely. Led a study this summer on this very topic. We must decrease! It’s about our heart—-be Jesus with skin on…with laundry piled high & dirty dishes in the sink. Open our doors AND our hearts.

  138. Tiffany says:

God is whispering to me about hospitality for months now. I’m not quite sure what He’s wanting to tell me though, and I hope He reveals it through this study. And now I’m even more excited that I’ve met Amanda and Raechel and to find out that Logan, Sarah Mae and Annie are all going to be joining this study! So much anticipation for what’s in store over the next 13 days!

  139. April says:

I’ve grown up in a church culture in which hospitality was about how good you looked. How perfectly worded are the invitations? How well dressed and well mannered are the children? How perfect is the casserole we’ve made to share? How good will photographs of this event look on facebook? I spent this upbringing feeling like there had to be more to Christian fellowship and Christian hospitality, and as an adult I have witnessed that there is a world of Jesus followers out there who do demonstrate a real, messy kind of hospitality. This kind of hospitality is so much more reflective of the God we serve, and the needs we are called to meet.

  140. Yogajean says:

Is anyone else having issues with the scripture page not loading?

    1. shereadstruth says:

Hi there. Are you on the iOS app? Sounds like you may need to update to the newest version? If that doesn't work, go to the feedback tab on the About page of the app to send us an email!

      1. Yogajean says:

        Thanks. It is working.

  141. Glenda says:

I’m ready to learn more about true hospitality and grateful to be part of this community.

  142. Bea says:

Wow. Just the thought that hospitality is so much more than providing a meal in a pleasant environment. It actually takes strength, inner strength to truly be hospitable the way Jesus would be hospitable.

  143. Deanna says:

It is a passion of mine to be hospitable. I am so excited as to what this study holds and the impact it will have on my heart.

  144. Jessica Pickett says:

Really excited to study in step with the #shereadstruth community this time around! As a hostess who has spent much of my time in the kitchen, missing pieces of deep conversation, I’m excited to let Jesus teach me the posture to take as he truly is the most extravagant host!

  145. Lindsay Jensen says:

Hospitality is one of my favorite things of this world. I even majored in it in college. But I’ve never taken the time to truly study the biblical meaning of true hospitality and so I am excited to begin this journey. I am praying for a true change of heart in the next 13 days and hope that this understanding can help me in my pursuit of becoming an event designer. True hospitality comes from the heart: I will be repeating this to myself over and over.

  146. Cari Spaulding says:

I’ve always said that hospitality is right up my ally. I feel like it’s a gift that was naturally placed in me, and I get joy from practicing it. Though, I am coming to realize, there’s much more to it than I think. I’ve perfected my cake baking skills and can put on a pretty great shower, but there’s a condition of the heart that should match that, and I’m beginning to think I have a ways to go in this area. I doubt Jesus made too many cakes of threw a bunch of baby showers, yet he was the most hospitable person in history. So let is embark on finding out how exactly he did it!

  147. Samantha says:

The warmest, most welcoming place to be invited into is into someone's heart. Jesus had no home, he was nomadic, staying with whomever would house them as they traveled town-to-town. He had no dining table or food to offer, but He had his open gracious heart and as our study said, no one was more hospitable than Him.
I suspect that this study will be less about how to eliminate fear and stress and more about realizing that opening your heart to people…extending what you can to them, even if it's a conversation in the aisle at Target. That is a true act of hospitality and a mirror of the heart of Jesus.
    Excited for this transformative study.

  148. Jamie says:

I need this study! I haven’t been on Pinterest in a while and I logged back on the other night and was COMPLETELY overwhelmed. It’s so easy to get caught up in comparison and honestly, it keeps me from hosting a lot of things. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this study.

  149. Kerri says:

This year, as a junior in college, I was blessed with a Resident Assistant position. I have SO been looking forward to this study. It is much more difficult to be hospitable than what I imagined! I have only felt success in being hospitable by hosting events and planning things for the ladies on my dorm floor…. but there is so much more to it than that. Through this study and encouragement from the SRT community, I am looking forward to molding my heart to look more like Jesus'. I'm excited to gain a new perspective on what it truly means to be hospitable!

    1. Sarah says:

How awesome that you chose to become an RA! I was one in college. Simply having your door open or letting the residents come and spill their heart out to you will open doors you never though possible. I was able lead 2 girls to Christ in my time as an RA. I don’t say that to brag but to encourage you and see how wide open the doors of his Love can be in your dorm! May you bless and be encouraged by this opportunity!

  150. Leanne says:

A month or so ago my husband was appointed in the area of hospitality in church. I remember calling him crying when I read the duties saying I couldn’t do. Inviting strangers is overwhelming to the introvert who can barely speak to one. I resisted but knew it was wrong. Ive been blessed with new relationships but it still easy. May the spirit of hospitality reach my heart!

  151. Yogajean says:

One of my gifts is hospitality but I don’t have much time to offer this gift. I am really looking forward to this study.

  152. Rabecca says:

So excited to do this study. I want to learn hospitality in my heart not just my home.

  153. Crystal says:

We are starting a 4 week series on hospitality for our campus ministry! I cannot wait to share with them. It’s about the attitude- are we loving others the way Christ would?! Be blessed sisters.

  154. Stephanie Driscoll says:

@Hillary I totally agree! This is my hang up too, I need to remember what you said.. Stop making it about me and make it about others!

  155. Hillary says:

The idea of having to have everything together before offering hospitality has held me back from offering it to those needing it so many times. I worry my house isn't clean enough or it's been a busy week and I just need time to relax instead of meeting others in their times of need. Hospitality begins in the heart. This means I need to stop making it about me and make it about others.

  156. Crystal says:

I don't think it's coincidence that I started this today. I'm frantically trying to get my house ready for a play date Wednesday and am increasingly frustrated with the little ones around me. I needed this reminder – and encouragement.

And if I'm really honest with myself, I'm pretty good at being hospitable to people outside my family … I mean, I don't care if my house is clean or not. If you want to stop by – come on over! I'll feed you, give you something to drink, listen to your troubles or your joys … I'll stop whatever I'm doing to spend time with you. But man do I need to work on my hospitality towards the people who live under the same roof as me (aka the little ones that seem to always be in my way."

  157. Diane says:

I loved the “cereal for dinner” comment. This is the meal plan I save for myself when I’m the only one home. I love it! Seriously tho…for YEARS I fretted about all the reasons not to have people to our house. Our carpet was thread-bare, the walls needed painting, my decor was out-dated…and the list goes on. I have come far in the last few years. I realize that the only thing I really need to provide is a room. My preference is a kitchen table with some kind of food in the middle. I absolutely adore sharing a meal and some laughter with friends! But I know biblical hospitality is so much more…and I am ready to dig deep in this study with you all!

  158. onneutralgrnd says:

Great series idea! I am also blogging about hospitality in our Pinterest-driven culture, and how to include our kids on the journey.
    http://www.onneutralground.com/2014/09/17/showing

    Looking forward to following along!

  159. Steph_Lilac says:

The world's view of hospitality pales in comparison with what true hospitality really is. The study of hospitality is near and dear to my heart as I majored in it during college. I am eager to learn more about Biblical hospitality.

  160. Effie says:

I’m hoping this study might show me how to remove stress from hospitality. I am always in a panic when I have people round (and yes because of the food or decor) but even on my FIL fortnightly visit on his own to us I’m the epitome of a ball of stress as I worry that things aren’t right, that the food isn’t ready on time or might be something he doesn’t like or my husband didn’t make him a cup of tea fast enough – yes it’s his dad! But I just feel constantly on edge. I see others who may panic the cake isn’t Pinterest worthy but they don’t let the stress infect them as it does me

  161. Kendall_S says:

    Hospitality is:

    Genuine love
    Good
    Brotherly affection
    Showing honor
    Being fervent in spirit
    Serving The Lord
    Joyful in hope
    Patient in tribulation
    Prayerful
    Meeting needs
Seeking for ways to show it

Today I'm convicted that I need to start showing more facets about hospitality on this list from Romans to my family. Those I live with and who know my real self and bent to sin are those that I am neglecting. Forgive my misguided views Father. Help me to look to you for examples of true hospitality.

    1. Niki says:

      Love this. Thanks for posting!

  162. Gloria M says:

I started following on IG and now I'm enjoying these studies on your site. I pray the Jesus abundantly blesses you for sharing His word – it's what we're called to do and you do it well. Thank you.

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Gloria, I'm so thankful we get to do this study together! Excited for what's to come!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  163. Nicole says:

Praise Jesus for this today. I am loving getting back into the She Reads Truth community after being lazy and slacking with my Jesus time recently. I love doing this every day. It refreshing my mind and my soul and its what I need. No more being lazy! Can't wait to dive into this study and learn about how hospitality needs to look in my life. We must show hospitality to anyone and everyone

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Nicole, I'm so happy to see you post today! We love having you!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  164. Jaime says:

I read an article a while back about the differences between "hospitality" and "entertaining" and this quote stuck with me: "Often when we talk about hospitality, we think of “entertaining.” But entertaining has little to do with real hospitality if the goal is to impress others rather than to serve."
It REALLY hit home because I often think, and it appears that a lot of other people struggle with this mindset as well, that they way my house looks, the decor, table "scape", food etc. has to be Pinterest worthy to have people over; to be worthy and good enough. I love the truth that hospitality starts in the HEART and not on my Pinterest account. I lose sight of what hospitality really is–loving and serving people!

    1. Kendall_S says:

      Love that quote Jaime!

    2. Sammi says:

Absolutely love this. So very true!

We must show hospitality to anyone and everyone, just like Jesus did.

  166. Joanna says:

When I first started this lesson this morning, I thought this study wouldn't be for me. I live in a shoe box with family and I am unable to be a hostess and create a nice hospitality environment. But as I was going through the study, I was struck with the thought that the image of hospitality isn't just being a good hostess but how we are in whatever environment God places us.

  167. Sonia Katy says:

I am part of a family of 8. And we have always lived in small 2 bedroom apartment homes. So im used to the tight and small. But, now as an adult. I live in a 2 bedroom with husband and daughter. And we have never felt unable to practice hospitality. Our close knit family is 20. At every birthday. And we have had the opportunity to be closer as a family eventhough we have to share a space on the floor and eat at the coffee table. Family and friends always comes before comfort and insecurities. This year has been more hectic and haven’t done it as much but I desperately need to. So excited to go on this journey!

  168. Heather says:

So glad I found this! I love She Reads Truth! I used to think my house had to be such and such or this way or that way, but I've been learning it's not how it looks necessarily, it's about my heart and intentions. Thanks for this study!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Thrilled you found us, Heather! We love having you!

  169. Lisa says:

Wow…. I really needed to read this today. I’ve never been into arts and crafts, never had the decorative eye or been the best cook (sorry hubby and kids lol). Its never really kept me from trying but for the longest I have been so down on myself about not being the perfect idea of what hospitality is that I’ve come to really dislike the word itself. What Grace Jesus has just shown me knowing how I struggle in this area.To be honest I wasnt ecen going to read it but my friend recommended it and I’m glad I did. I think I’m ready to learn more about this not so scary word anymore. Thanks!

  170. Keiana says:

Wow, this study couldn’t come at a more perfect time of the year. Very excited on what God will open our hearts to in this study.

  171. katie says:

I learned about this at Allume and am so excited to be able to follow along in the study. My eyes were really opened at the conference to SO MANY new ideas and thoughts on hospitality, but the struggle (for me) always is how to bring things home and apply them, rather than just getting back caught up in my day-to-day life. So I'm hopeful for this study to help these things take root over the next few weeks. Thank you in advance!

  172. Courtney says:

I am SO excited about this study. I think in this day and age when women so easily compare themselves to one another through social media, we really have gotten true biblical hospitality all wrong. It's not about the spread in Southern Living or that one instagram account that that just seems to get it right every time. I think this is going to be such an eye opener and such an encouragement to women! :)

  173. BethanyB says:

Okay there were two things that stood out to me as I was praying through the verses.

God says he desires mercy not sacrifice. There is a big difference in those two words.

Also as I was praying I felt him encourage me to ask to see his kingdom not my kingdom. Eyes off me and into the unseen eternal realm.

  174. BethanyB says:

As a visual person in a home with five kids this has become so hard for me. I get so hung up on what it looks like. We live in an old home and because I homeschool things have taken a beating….couches ripped, windows broken. We are in a very tight financial situation right now and I don’t have money to fix them. I love people and having them over but I’ve been hiding lately in Shame.

I’ve connected recently with a bunch of older lonely people on the trail I hike on daily. I’ve been feeling God nudging to invite them in. I just need the courage to not be ashamed of my living situation and know that it is not as bad as I see it. I think of all the times I’ve been invited in to homes of less fortunate and I never criticize their home but feel so honored they invited me in. That I could have the same humility and courage.

  175. mosmitherman says:

this past friday we had a fall festival that i coordinated and organized. i was so consumed with making sure everything was just perfect. games, food, music, decorations, etc. that i had to stop and literally tell myself that this was about the children. children do not care! this post along with discussion with others has really made me realize what hospitality is all about. since i am from the south i am used to the big, over decorated, over planned, over budget events. this has reminded me of the true purpose of why we do what we do. i only hope that i can have a heart more like Jesus. Thanks for sharing!

  176. Beth Warner says:

I’m so excited about this study. My Mom was always the one who hosted everything for our family. It might not have been Pinterest perfect, but everyone felt welcome and had a full tummy. I’ve taken on that roll as she got too old for it, I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way. Believe me, there have been times when I’d stress out about making sure things were perfect , that’s pretty much passed, thank goodness. I’m excited to see Jesus’ hospitality, somehow, I don’t think it means the perfect meal or table setting.

  177. Rebecca says:

    “I desire compassion, not sacrifice”
    What a conviction today!
I am a proprietress of a retail jewelry store (fashionable, affordable pieces) & my customers are a vast range! I pray that anyone The Lord sends through the door leaves feeling blessed; that I might touch the needs of their heart & speak love to them. However; It. Is. Daunting! Requiring SO much more patience, concern & discipline than I know I have! Praise God I have all I need to bless others through Him! For me, Hospitality is a constant state of compassion for someone else; asking The Lord to reveal their needs & teach me how to bless them.
The challenge for me is to remember is it’s not just a task to be completed; I can sacrificially love, but am I loving with a heart of compassion?

  178. Lyndsi says:

I’m so excited about this study! I have felt Jesus tugging at my heart in this area for awhile now. Slowly I’m learning that hospitality needs to be about allowing Jesus and people enter into my broken places. I feel a sweet tugging to open up my heart, not just my home, to those around me.

  179. Victoria Eger says:

This study comes at a perfect time as my small family of 3 is living in our large church parsonage and working with the youth group. Just last night my heart was full to see my home filled with 15 teenagers. We have a small budget right now, but God has been reminding me that He blesses us so that we can bless others – and that may not always be with $. Looking forward to digging deeper in what He has to say about this subject. Thank you!

  180. Alysa says:

I was so excited to see a friend post about this study on Facebook. Just last week I finished writing and sent my 'Authentic Hospitality // Simple Party' guidebook out into the interwebs. Thrilled to see many online communities writing about true hospitality. Eager to follow along here.

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

So glad you're joining us, Alysa! Excited to see what God teaches us!

  181. Julie Wilson says:

Praying that this study will keep me grounded and focused on Jesus as the busyness of the holiday season approaches. No more comparing to others’ houses, no more looking for the perfect potluck idea, no more perfect Christmas cookie platters, just love and open arms!!!

  182. Kallie says:

I am also vulnerable to thinking I’m less and can’t possibly host anything worthy. Looking forward this study.

  183. Danielle says:

This is such a great challenge for me. Right now, grad school has made my life crazy and hospitality has been far from my mind. This is a much needed reminder to focus on others, with love, especially during busy seasons of life!

  184. chelseasaner says:

As a first year teacher this year, I found myself wanting to be "outwardly" hospitable in my classroom- pinterest this pinterest that- comparing myself to all the other young teacher putting hours into the "look" of their classrooms. I hope this study is going to help me become more "inwardly" hospitable for my students.

Also as a brand new wife I have felt these pressures (from myself) so I am very excited for this study! So relevant in our culture…the bible truly is still living today!

  185. Monique says:

I used to tell my college students that at times Pinterest can be very much like virtual hoarding. Yes, it can be a good resource and tool for ideas, but every get together doesn't have to have a rainbow layer cake. Simply spend time with people. Excited for this study.

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

I love that, Monique! Good point. Excited you're joining us!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  186. Sarah Martin says:

I have to admit something. At first I was hesitant about this topic. I was for sure that SRT would go "outside the box" of what hospitality is portrayed in magazines and on Pinterest. But, I guess I was in a place where I feel vulnerable and well, hospitality takes us outside our comfort zone. I'm really excited about this. The Scripture for today in Romans fires me up. Whenever we invite people into our home I hesitate. My house is not Town and Country gorgeous…not even close. But the Lord reminds me that when HE is the centerpiece of our table, our household, ministry prevails over any notions of a physically beautiful home. Thank you for challenging me with this series!!!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Sarah, when I think about our culture's version of hospitality versus what we are actually called to, I breathe a huge sigh of relief! I hope you find the same in this study. I'm thankful we get to do it together!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

  187. Kasey Tuggle says:

So excited about this study! I have been praying a lot lately that the Lord would soften my heart. I have an attitude problem and I just want more Jesus to come an infuse into my heart so there is no room for my bad attitude!

  188. Michele says:

Me too! And Amanda, it's even more encouraging because I'm single, don't have a house of my own (here, parents flip if their daughters say they want to live alone – and are unmarried). So to see and hear that hospitality starts in the heart – hallelujah! That means I can be hospitable too, even without a house of my own or a husband. And even if I have these next time (God willing), I'll know that it's not about prettying up the place or serving a delicious meal. It's all about the heart.

    1. emilymueller143 says:

Amen! I lived with this thought too, for awhile. All of my friends were married and served me dinner on matching plates with nice silverwear, and then I went home to my tiny place that I shared with roommates, equipped with silverwear I'd found in a plastic bag in the basement. Nice.

Now, I just got married, but we live in a TINY one-bedroom, and have an even smaller budget. Not the kinda place I imagined getting to be hospitable with. It really is about our hearts and not what we have.

  189. Sarah says:

Excited to begin this study. I live wracked with guilt, doubt, wonderings-and these readings reminded me that God loves me. He died for me, and I live ever-thankful for that. I pray to learn what it means to live a life of hospitality reflective of Christ's love.

  190. Lea says:

This study is very timely for me! My husband's father is sick and likes to spend the weekends at our house sometimes. I welcome him, but in my heart I am stressed–the house is a mess, we haven't grocery shopped, i don't know what he likes to eat, i don't want to entertain someone all weekend–the list goes on.

"In Jesus we see that hospitality begins in the heart." What an eye-opening sentence. I feel embarrassed that my heart is not in the right place right now, but instead worried about silly things like a messy house. I know this study will help my heart become hospitable. Thank you SRT!

  191. Elizabeth says:

I'm so excited that this study starts today! Just in time for the upcoming holidays! I must admit that I know little on this subject other than what I learned from Pinterest. A little embarrassing but I can't wait to learn what hospitality really is and put these words into action! :)

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Thrilled you're joining us, Elizabeth! Excited to see what God does!

  193. Amanda Michelle says:

I LOVE this post. I you want a good book to read along side this study, it’s called “Reaching Out” by Henri Nouwen. I’ve have several elders, friends, and mentors recommend this book to many people and has been a staple on my night stand!
Praise Jesus for distinguishing his children from the world by giving them the mandate to be hospitable by the heart! What a battle cry for this generation who reaches out through the Internet but struggles to reach out to our neighbor. This just reminds me how we are the light of the world. Thank you so much for this timely study. I’m sooo excited to go through it.

  194. Meagan says:

As a newlywed, I have struggled as my incredible, but very extroverted, husband is always planning things in our home! This series could not be more perfect for me right now! I hope to posture my heart more with an attitude of hospitality just like Jesus!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

So glad you're joining us, Meagan! Excited to see what God does!

  195. Amy says:

Wow! I am so excited that I stumbled on this study this morning. It truly amazes me how God will put things in front of you & say “hear ya go!” Thank you & can’t wait to follow along.

  196. Pam says:

Wow the pressure society puts on us is so deceiving! Looking to Jesus for how to extend true hospitality.

  197. Sara says:

I looked up the Greek word for Hospitality used in Romans 12:13 and it means “love to strangers” I have always thought hospitality as opening my home to friends and serving them. Thank you Lord for the reminder that it’s not JUST about the people already in my life- but for me to open my heart to STRANGERS. To reach out to people I don’t know and share your love with them.

That Greek word is only used again in Hebrews 13:2 “do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it”

    1. Thank you for posting that!

    2. Ruthann says:

I LOVE a good definition. Thank you for posting that. <3

  198. Beckey says:

I am gonna be honest with y'all… every time I read the word "Hospitality", I start to itch all over. And it's not because of tablescapes, or 7 layer cakes, or party favors. It's a tendency toward being an introvert. To keep to myself. To feather my little nest for myself and my immediately family and create a refuge from the rest of the world. Truthfully, I wasn't even sure I would participate in this study. But because God has spent this year pressing me to step out in faith and live "Fearless", I opened this mornings email and began reading. And so, here I am…. curious to see what God will teach me about His nature, myself, and His plans for me.

  199. Jeannette says:

I am so relieved…I resisted this study because I was afraid it was going to be a 13 day reminder of how I ‘don’t measure up’ & I just don’t need any more pressure in my life. But the call to open my heart and be loved by Jesus, and the idea of loving others out of that abundance, makes me feel hopeful…

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Jeannette, I'm breathing a sigh of relief with you! This is absolutely not about measuring up, and is ALL about pointing one another to hope! So glad you're here, friend. Be encouraged!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

      1. Jeannette says:

Thank you for the encouragement! I really need it right now. I'm looking forward to whatever God has to teach me & it means something that I'm not doing this alone. :)

  200. Elisha says:

I can’t wait to study this! I have always struggled with not feeling adequate to hold parties and gatherings even when I long to have others over. Can’t wait!

  201. Emily says:

I’m excited to study this these next few weeks! Pinterest is definitely my weakness too… :)

  202. Melody says:

A tale of two grandmothers- I grew up with two grandmothers who regularly hosted family for various holidays and events. One would spend weeks preparing, getting out seasonal knick-knacks to display, polishing silver, deciding which of her 12 sets of china fit the mood best, cleaning every room in case someone wanted a house tour, and gourmet-menu planning. The other made sure her house was clean (or at least the rooms we'd be in), used the same set of dishes every time, and cooked the foods with which we were all familiar. They both were (and still are) fabulous hostesses. But even in their 80s, one is still all about the invitations and the etiquette while the other just opens the door (and these days just brings in catered fried chicken). I don't fault either one of them for the way they show hospitality. But sometimes I think that the grandmother I described second seemed to "get it" a little more. While the former focused on how things looked (including us…we always had to be dressed up), the latter was more concerned with how we felt. I love both of my grandmothers. They both taught me about hosting guests. I think there is a time and a place for formal invitations, and a thorough house cleaning, and a dress up gathering with gourmet food on china and everyone in their best clothes and on their best behavior (like, once a year for our family, maybe). But more often I just enjoy throwing open the door to my "come as you are" friends and family, and sitting around the one or two cleanish rooms in the house where everyone just feels welcomed. Period.

I'm looking forward to this study. Happy Monday, ladies.

    1. Janet Mylin says:

I don’t usually read the comments on this but yours was planted right in front of me, Melody. Thank you for sharing this. It’s really beautiful.

      1. Melody says:

        Thanks!

    2. Marissa says:

Melody thanks so much for sharing this! I love it, taking notes in my journal!!

      1. Melody says:

        Thanks!

    3. ClaireB says:

No love this because at 58 I am a cross between both of your grandmothers. Cannot help it, like Amanda I grew up in the heart of small town Alabama in the Black Belt and it was just that way. BUT the older I get the more relaxed I am. I want my family and friend to feel relaxed. So I will cook but I also have no problem with Honey Baked Ham and Publix fried chicken. I want to spend relaxed time with my grandson and 2 great nieces and want my daughter and niece to not worry about them ‘messing up ‘. I want them to crawl in my 81 year old parents and my 89 year old mother in laws lap. I will cram everyone around my table that seats 12 even if there are 14. It is about the togetherness. Now with this study I hope to expand beyond my front door to be hospitable to others.

      1. ClaireB says:

******not sure where the first words of my comment came from. Very weird.

        1. Melody says:

No worries. Sometines I feel like a mix of both of them, but as I’ve had kids, I’ve leaned towards the more relaxed than the more formal- although once a year or so it is quite fun to plan and prepare something special. :-)

  203. Mariah M. says:

Wow! That was a great start to the Hospitality series! I seriously have been counting down the days till this series began!
I love that, not is Jesus hospitable, but everywhere he goes, he makes a change in people. He 'leaves his mark'.
I love that we can learn everything from Jesus, but I had never thought before that we can learn about true hospitality in Jesus! It's amazing!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Amanda and SRT for all these amazing bible lessons! I love them so much and am so thankful for them!

  204. Marissa says:

I ordered the Study Pack for this series and I am so excited to start my morning off thinking about true hospitality. Romans 12:9 says Let love be without hypocrisy. That is what I am going to work on today. I have always been that "church girl" who finds her "true friends" at church and just attends college classes on the side. The people I met there were not considered true friends in my book. However, I have started grad school this fall and went to a church with no one my age. I am learning what friendship looks like beyond line of church-goers. And I have found some amazing people and opportunities. I want to learn to love them, to invite them into my heart without hypocrisy. May I shine Jesus at school and not just keep Him hidden in my man-made bubble of church going friends.

    1. emilymueller143 says:

      Amen!

  205. Sarah says:

I believe our society has put so much pressure on what the “right” way is to entertain that we forget why we have people over in the first place. My mom never kept our has immaculate and yet people were always welcome over. I don’t know how many friends used to stop by and just walk in through the garage and tap on the widow pane. Her arms were open and I like to think I’m the same way. I am excited to join you all for the first time and learn about true biblical hospitality!

  206. Michelle says:

I understand this concept in the way that we need to concentrate more on the people that we've invited into home versus what the home looks like or what food we can serve. But I think this is speaking to me in the way of WHO I'm inviting in. Like you said above, Jesus was always with the "least of these." Always. I need to expand my circle. I need to somehow invite others into a conversation with me and be hospitable that way. Others that I wouldn't normally. I'm VERY excited about this new study! Thanks!!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Such a great point, Michelle! Jesus was always inviting everyone, and that's something I should take to heart! Excited to have you with us!

  208. Tanna Donalson says:

I wish I had something warm and wonderful to say but I’m just left so thankful for who JESUS truly was and not for society’s pressure on us these days. We’ve been through some serious trauma and transitions over the past 2 years. Moved 3 times, half of our things are still in boxes and we still aren’t at our final resting home…in fact we’re not even in the state we will be in come 8 months from now. When I got married, I recieved all
Kinds of gifts that would make hospitality easy: beautiful China, great cookbooks, etc. It’s all in boxes. We have a mattress in our living room that seems to be permanent. I haven’t found a ton of time to cook much less bake goodies for my lucky guests. There are days of shame and a huge hastening for the day when we can settle to come quickly. Thank you Jesus that this is not what it’s all about. Hospitality really does start in my heart, not in my house. I could still take people into my home but more importantly I can look after and sincerely care for people. I am a PA in the emergency room and all I do is care for people so what an amazing opportunity for me to use the gifts the lord has graciously given me and provide care with a hospitable spirit. Thank you ladies at SRT, this was a fantastic reminder for me to quick sulking over the current state my family is in.

    1. Laura H says:

I can so relate to your situation! We have moved twice in the last year and are getting ready to move again in a few months to our permanent city. I sit here typing as I look at boxes stacked high to the ceiling that I never bothered unpacking in our little apartment. I too long to be settled. I love that you say "Hospitality really does start in my heart, not in my house." Great reminder! Best of luck to you!

  209. Ann says:

Excited to join this study and looking forward reading the comments.

  210. Svalentine811 says:

I'm so excited to start a study along with this beautiful community! I've done Hosea and Hebrews, but I was behind. I'm looking forward to being in God's Word with you all on this important topic.

"We’re all rag-tag sojourners being welcomed in by the Creator, sinners being redeemed by the Savior." That was such a sweet truth to be reminded of this morning – and to be put in the context of hospitality. I have been welcomed by the Creator of the universe. It seems silly not to welcome all who might need a friend, a listening ear, or a hot cup of coffee on a cold day.

Blessings on all of you, Sisters.

  211. Candice says:

What a conviction! I have the same image of hospitality, whether it be for friends or friends of my kids. I tend to put the things of this world in front of where my heart is and that heart connection with others. I am so grateful for SRT, thank you for all you do in helping us to study and read God's Word with truth and conviction!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Candice, we are so grateful for your place in our community! Excited to study with you!

  212. Stephanie says:

I’m excited for this study! I was just telling myself last week on the way to set up for my sons first birthday that it wasn’t about the decorations or what people said about how everything looked but rather it was about celebrating the life God had given us. It led me to pray and thank God for life and celebrations and to repent for getting all caught up in the details that I almost forgot about what wa really important- the people. I love the part in the study today that talks about hospitality starting in the heart. I think it bring hospitality to a whole new level not just in your home but living a hospitable life. Wherever you are welcoming other people and letting them know you want them to be a part of your life and maybe for you that needs to start at a church function or restaurant. But let’s all let hospitality begin in out hearts so that even in the checkout line at the grocery store people feel welced into our lives and cared about.

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

LOVE this, Stephanie! Thank you for sharing your heart with us! Excited for this study with you!

  213. agfrahm says:

We so often think of "hospitality" in the sense of using our homes & bringing people into our little spheres, but after reading the passages in Matthew, I have to wonder if hospitality has more to do with having the heart to GO to the people & meet them where they are rather than focusing on getting them into our little worlds.

    1. Judy says:

I received the same message. Hospitality is more about opening my heart to others rather than my home.

    2. Alysa says:

Yes!! Hospitality can happen anywhere. Not just within the walls of our homes. Love that you brought that up.

    3. Nicole says:

Yes I like the way you're thinking!

  214. Kimone says:

Amen. I am a lover of Hospitality and with a degree in the study, this devotion tells me I still have more ro learn. Anticipating the coming days. Super excited. Hope all is well with all. Enjoy ur day. God bless.

No one was more hospitable than Jesus, and we can only extend true hospitality in Jesus.

    1. Cari Spaulding says:

You’ve got that right! I’m in the same boat as you…loving hospitality, but quickly realizing I have a far way to go! Let us learn how to model our lives after Jesus in this quest.

  215. Latesia says:

Hospitality….wow. I have always been the type to do unto others as they do unto me. But I realized and God convicted me to Bless my enemies and to treat them still with the love of God, even to go as far as praying for my enemies…gotta admit it was very hard at first, but God…..That's why I'm excited about this lesson about "Hospitality". It teaches and encourages us to start with "Home". I'm sooooo excited to start this and watch God's plans and Blessings for me, my family and the Body of Christ to unfold. Everyone Be Blessed and Let's Be a Blessing…..It starts today!!!!!

  216. This totally hit home for me. We're in the process of buying our first house and I have grand visions of a Pinterest-worthy house and hosting wonderful Instagrammable parties… but that's not really what it's about. I need to open up my heart & home to those that need it, not so that I can impress the internet!

  217. Shelia says:

This is going to be a great study. I was just talking with a friend about this the other day. We have a good friend who has spent days getting her house ready for her best friend to come visit. She wants everything perfect. Her best friend could care less about the house, and is all about TIME with a RESTED friend, not a worn out worried friend. And the reality is, if my best friend was coming from California, I would be just as guilty. Hospitality comes from the heart. Let's get ready to let God change us girls!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Such a great point, Sheila. Let's get ready for God to change us!! Love to you!

  218. LaurieEW says:

"Matha,Martha, you are worried about many things." Yeah that's me. "Hospitality", used to come naturally to me. My definition was shopping, cleaning, cooking, decorating, serving. But as I was doing my "hospitality" I was ignoring the relationships. So the work of it all became old, and I gave up on my "hospitality" and quit doing it.
I am very excited about this study, thank you for following God's vision and bringing to me what He wants me to hear.

    1. Becky says:

I agree with Laurie. We just studied Mary and Martha in our weekly women's study last week and lots of things hit home for me. I had some family over to our house this weekend and decided NOT to stress out over the cleanliness (lack of), toys scattered around, etc. And it was FINE! Ha. I was still able to enjoy myself and just rest in those I love. A great day 1 – excited about what God is already teaching me on this topic!

    2. Andrea says:

Amen, Laurie! This reminded me of Martha as well :)

I'm so looking forward to this next study, and already I can tell it's going to be a difficult one for me to get through. I wasn't raised in the church, and so adopting Godly principles is not something I do as easily as I eat and breathe. My heart is sincere though, and I love to help others – heck, I'm in a helping profession even! But the idea of hospitality toward others, well, today's words have hit home very much. Just last night I found myself reflecting on the idea that I always want what others have, including a nice home, a clean home, a decorated home, lots of friends to entertain and have over for parties. This comes just after going to a wedding reception/cocktail party on Saturday (they were married out of state last week and had a party this week for the locals). And all of the comparing inside my head started. But then I realized, I'm NOT these people. I'm not where they are – I have a very different life. I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old, and I've never really had great housekeeping skills. So, to say that our house is messy, is to state the obvious. I hate it some days, and most days I feel inadequate because I cannot keep up with all the kid-created messes, or messes that come from my husband not picking up after himself. I'm a work in progress, and my home is as well. It's not even MY home. We still rent. Which brings on more about comparing myself to others…..

So I'm looking forward to this study, not so I can say that my home doesn't matter, but to say to myself, that I CAN be hospitable toward others, even when my home isn't nice and decorated, even when I don't know how to make those cute tasty little sausage mushroom bites, even when I don't have a clue how to throw a party. I'd like to say I know how to love and serve others, and I'm a work in progress. As I'm digging into the Bible the last few months and learning about Godly principles and how to follow Christ, I've had to reconcile that with my upbringing – being raised by stingy, harsh parents who were very isolative and private and have their own ways to live. I've known all my life that that wasn't me, that there had to be a better way, and now I'm so blessed to say that I'm trying to live THE Better way, every day. Tho I fail miserably some days. I started realizing that my spiritual walk had a lot to do with how I was raised when I had a conversation with someone a couple years ago. But this really hit home when I started following SRT and studying here a few months ago, with the study on Justice.

God, help me to not be someone who lives in this world, but who lives for you. Help me to not compare myself to others and shortchange the skills and abilities you have given me. God, thank you for your blessings and gifts. Help me to not squander them. Help me Lord to understand what true hospitality is and how to reach out to others as Christ did so often. Help me to see that it's not about having the cleanest house or the nicest serving platters or the yummiest recipes, but that it's about loving others the way Christ has loved us, forgiving others their sins against us, and giving all that we have to give – our time and our heart. God, forgive me for comparing myself to others and wanting what others have and not appreciating all that you have given me. Help me to not feel inadequate – help me to realize that I feel inadequate when I am in this world, but that with You, all things are possible and I am completely adequate and capable of loving and serving others. God, help me also to be patient while I'm in this waiting time, to be patient and understand that all good things come in time.

    1. Stephanie says:

Carolyn, tnthe beginning of your post spoke to me in so many ways and I just want u to know u are not alone! I struggle to keep up with the wreck of my house that we rent while picking up after my husband and two toddlers. And sometimes at the end of the day or even at the beginning of the day it is so hard to have anyone enter the “home zone” for fear of judgement or even just lack of energy to be hospitable. I’m so thankful for this study as well

    2. Sammi says:

Thank you for putting such beautiful words to so many of the things I am feeling as well. I pray that this study allows all of us to overcome those feelings of inadequacy and allow us to open our hearts and homes despite what we may see as shortcomings.

    3. SheReadsTruth says:

Sweet sister, I am so thankful for your bravery in sharing these words. May God hold you close and show you His warm kindness and hospitality through this study. We love having you!

  221. Stacy Sander says:

I have been looking forward to this study….until I found out my in-laws will be visiting this weekend. (That is not a good thing). Now I am all like “aw crap….” I hate/love how God meets me in places like this.

    1. LaurieEW says:

He does have a sense of humor, doesn't he?

    2. Latesia says:

Good Morning my sister In Christ!!! I just wanted to speak some food for thought into your life this morning. I have been where you are right now, with in-laws. Everyone that God puts in our paths, he puts there for a reason. I know it may be hard to get used to being hospitable to those who we may not want to or have a hard time being hospitable to, but you never know maybe God put them in your life to save them or even change their thought processes. Let go & Let God and watch what he will do for you. After all, this just might be the perfect opportunity to show some real "Hospitality". Have a Blessed day and stay encouraged my sister.

    3. Oh, His goodness can be so harsh at times!

    4. ButterflyBre says:

My Sister it sounds like you're going to get on the job training. How wonderful that you will have daily encouragement and guidance on this journey. Praying with you.

  222. Kathryn says:

I'm someone who has never struggled to welcome people into a messy home, and I enjoy it, but that has grown into two types of sin. The first is self-righteousness ans judgment of those whose insecurities prevent them from being vulnerable with the real lives of their house. The second is in practicing that kind of hospitality shielding my heart from the real vulnerability of welcoming true strangers into my home and heart, particularly those among the most vulnerable in society. I'm asking God for the grace that leads to repentance this morning.

Also, I'm praying for you teachers above, for a heart of gracious welcoming for your students and that your classrooms would be places of respite and peace. I'm also praying for the strength that comes only through Christ after loving kids has broken your heart any times.

  223. Julia says:

Sisters, I rarely post in the comments here, but I do love reading all of yours. I am so excited to dig into this study together. I spent 8 years teaching hospitality to high school kids, and now I have left teaching to open a café-restaurant. I struggle daily with what hospitality truly means for me at home AND at work. I am inviting strangers in as guests every day. And I need to be reminded (EVERYDAY) to do so with grace and mercy, and for HIS glory.. and not my own. Lord, please meet me here, in this study. I pray that your words permeate my whole being. Thank you Jesus and #SRT!!

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Julia, I'm so glad you commented today! Excited to study hospitality with you and hear how The Lord moves!

      xoxo-Kaitlin for She Reads Truth

      1. Julia says:

        Thank you Kaitlin:)

  224. Connie says:

I also struggle with opening my home and my heart to others. I don’t like sharing my private space, I like the things in my home exactly one certain way, I don’t have time for all the extra cooking and cleaning it takes to host people. I am praying that The Lord hears all these silly excuses of mine and helps me to remember that hospitality is a mind set, an attitude, a way of living, not a dinner party. May He open our hearts so that we can share His love and His home with everyone we meet.

    1. Latesia says:

Wow…you just said a mouth-full. You re so right, hospitality is a mind set, an attitude, a way of living, not a dinner party like you say. I totally agree. God wants us to be hospitable to everyone around us and anyone and everyone we encounter during our daily regimens. Bless you sister in Christ. Be Blessed!!!!

    2. Meagan says:

That is so true! “A way of life, AN ATTITUDE, …” I am so encouraged to position my heart differently and begin to walk forward in this position of my heart!!

  225. Rachel says:

I am also a high school teacher and encouraged by your authenticity! I had never thought of teaching as a way to show hospitality. But really, we can show hospitality wherever we are, and whomever we are with. Matthew 9:12 was a part of our sermon in church yesterday. Our pastor used this verse to support that "Jesus had not problem calling out the sin in sinners without making them feel less". May this be our heart as we show hospitality to all around us to love them as Jesus did!

  226. joanne says:

Oh boy do I need this! Hospitality begins in the heart. Cant wait to learn.

  227. smithwendy62 says:

This reminds me of all of the missed opportunities for fellowship for fear that I would be judged by my house, forgetting the fact that it is about the fellowship, the relationship with others that was the most important.

    1. Marissa says:

Me too 100% ! My friends have never cared if my house was spotless. I did have my dad over once the day of my daughters birthday party and he told me if I didn’t clean the kitchen floor everyone would talk about me after they left. It really hurt me when he said that, but I knew that wasn’t about me, but his own insecurities about what people think, I think maybe I get that from him. I got into an argument with my husband over whether or not to have party favors , and he said I care too much about impressing people. With me leaving my job to stay home with our 4 year old we don’t have as much money but I was insisting on making this party something nice to look at when in reality everyone was there to celebrate our daughter with us. I want the parties to be Pinterest worthy and impressive. But when I was a kid we didn’t even have themed birthdays, and hardly any decorations other than a few balloons and maybe a decorative disposable table cloth and we all had fun.
Anyway, I am really excited about this study! I definitely need to hear more truth about what the bible says about hospitality versus what my Pinterest dictates.

      1. Sammi says:

It is so nice to know I'm not alone in this. Every part of what you said I can relate to. My son turns 3 in a week, and I'm embarrassed to think of the amount of time I've spent stressing on the details of his party (that he'll probably never remember). Invitations, decorations, activities, etc. Should we have it at home? Do we have enough space? Is our house clean enough, put together enough, etc. etc. etc.? Most of it triggered by Pinterest and feeling like somehow what we have/who we are is not up to par with everyone else. Like you, I can't wait for this study. I certainly need it.

    2. alicia says:

Hi ! Just wanted you to know one of the most godly women i know is a TERRIBLE housekeeper. She admits it too. She's working on it :) BUT it has not stopped her from being hospitable. She is amazingly good at "divine encounters" and has a way of making anyone feel loved and like they're the only one on the planet. To me, that's what true hospitality looks like. Not having a "sparkling clean" house and a formal dinner setting. Just being somebody or having a home that's comfortable and easy for someone to relax with or in is what they'll remember and what the true definition of hospitality is to me

      1. Gammaw says:

Thank you for your words. My mother was older and established in her career when I was born. She has been told that she would never have children. She had her Saturday cleaning routine, and a little girl did not for into that routine. I never really learned how to juggle all the household things that need to be done. Your words made me realize that I am called to be what God wants me to be, not what the world says I should be. To be a godly woman is surely more hospitable than being a Pinterest woman. A much better perspective, more Jesus-like. Thank you sis, for your words that help me understand true hospitality.

  228. ckornegay says:

I so often shy away from inviting others into my home- it seems like so much work! Like what our family does and how we behave and what we eat are not enough to share with other folks. My prayer today is that the Father would help me to remember that hospitality is found in giving what we have, not offering what we don't have.

    1. LillieS says:

If only we could get away from feeling like we are not enough. I empathize with you, because I am not the hostess with the most"ess". I am not about presentation and making things look pretty. It just isn't in me. I often feel like if I don't home cook a meal, with pretty flowers and perfect appetizers, I am not good enough. My ugly lasagna tastes amazing, but I am serving it up on 20 Year old Corelle dishware.I am not sure how I get past this. My home is clean and neat, my food tastes good, not sure why I feel so inadequate.

      1. emilymueller143 says:

Maybe simply through the act of giving to people who will be super grateful? And if I can suggest a category – COLLEGE STUDENTS. I work in college ministry, (and not too long ago I was a college student) and one of the sorest, loneliest parts of being a college student is the lack of "home." It's great being surrounded by only 18-24 year olds but you miss SO MUCH by not having the older generation around.

I can tell you, just about any group of college students would be thrilled to be invited into someone's home (no matter what it looked like), fed a homecooked meal (on any dishes. Remember, this is a group that can and will eat off of frisbees), and receive wisdom from someone who actually has some life experience.

        1. Cindy says:

I agree so much with this about college students! As Mom of a new college Freshman, I ache every day because she is struggling to fit in and feeling like everyone else "has it all togetherness". She's doing everything right (clubs, religious activities, reaching out to others) but seems to still be operating on the fringes of every group and feeling very lonely… My heart is breaking as I sit here and think of her sadness… Pray for her, please. …
Truely a card or invitation of some kind would be so welcome and such a blessing. It's a great place to start, especially if you have children and the college student loves kids, as mine does…
Thanks for listening to my rambling…

        2. Frisbees made me laugh! It’s so true!! I also work with the college ministry, but most of my students still live at home. Our latest outing was walking around Wal-Mart!

  229. Cricket says:

After 8 years of teaching high school students I've been fighting the inevitable burnout that most public school teachers face. It is an ugly word that threatens the very calling that God placed on my life (other than wife & mom). I have been struggling to find hope every day for my students and have been praying for guidance. Reading today's scripture has filled my heart and has spoken straight to the core of this teacher! Hospitality begins in the heart & is an active expression if the heart. Just as Jesus extended himself to others & invited children to Him, I pray that I keep this same service attitude towards my students. I pray that I seek opportunities to offer invitations to learn in my classroom and that God shows me ways to apply Biblical Hospitality in my classroom as well as in my home.
    -Much Love,

    1. Holly says:

Each student is like one of those children at Jesus’ feet. I am an educator too and I understand how you’re feeling. Hang in there– by profession, you are working as the hands and feet of Jesus and are so close to His heart as you love those children :) <3

    2. Amy says:

Cricket You could have been writing for me as well. I'm on year 8 of teaching 5th grade in a school that is predominantly economically disadvantaged. I'm right there with you on the burnout. Thanks for the reminder to be hospitable to my kids. I know for many of them it's the only chance they have to see Jesus. This for sharing with us today.

    3. MichelleW says:

Amen! May Gods power and peaceful presence be in our classrooms.

    4. Leísy says:

  230. Lori says:

This study couldn’t have come at a better time! Right before the holiday season when we’ll be welcoming people in our homes, we get to see what God’s Word says about being hospitable. It’s my prayer that we focus on His idea of hospitality, not Pinterest.

  231. Onfaith says:

Truly looking forward to these chapters. Prior to my "retirement" my career was in the hotel/resort business. My actual job, to book and plan parties & conferences. It was right up my alley; sharing meals & celebrating with others was hugely important to me, even if others just knew they could pop in or call for an "ear". To have other people around our table or in our home, laughing and enjoying life has been a blessing. And when there was someone I couldn't have around my table, I'd bring food to them, even in the streets. It's been a pseudo ministry, but my life as current, just sweeping with stuff. We seem to be in a period that has our time completely dictated by responsibility and change, I miss the hospitable part of our lives. I'm overwhelmed with life's circumstances right now, and while I know there will be relief, potentially even in 2-3 months, my heart aches in the waiting, "being fervent in Spirit" is hard at times, though I am in constant conversation with God and I know relief is not far off. This study will be great for the place I am in and I am confident will serve to refresh my bones and heart! Thank you! ~ B

    1. Latesia says:

Good Morning #Onfaith! I agree there will definitely be relief coming your way. Just keep praying until something happens. P.U.S.H. and keep your head high, Be still…and know that he will bring you to that hospitable place again where your cupboards will be overflowing, that you will be able to feed your family and those other's you were talking about. I myself love this "Hospitality". I have to learn how to start right here in my own home. Like I always say "It starts at home". Love you In Christ my sister. Have a Blessed Day…Stay encouraged.

      1. Onfaith says:

Thank you so much for your encouragement! I truly appreciate it this season. ~ B

Our family is hosting a young girl who is traveling for a ministry team for a year. One of the biggest blessings in this is simply learning to love someone by thinking about what they need.

Long-term hospitality is a great teacher of giving and sacrifice. I pray it becomes a pattern for our family and that my children will imitate it as well.

Not everybody can do long-term, but we can all start with the people right in our own house. How can I host the hearts of my family well? *Sigh*Only through Him who strengthens me!

    1. melindawatters says:

I love this thought of hosting the hearts of my family well.

      1. That’s great perspective Melinda!!! I like thinking of it like that…hosting the hearts of my family.

    2. I really love what you said there- “Learning to love someone by thinking about what they need.” That really gets to the heart of it.

      1. Carly says:

I must have missed where that was written?

        1. EssieJean says:

Carly, that was written in the above comment (by Jeannie) that everyone is replying to here.

yes learning to love someone by thinking about what they need :)

    3. Marissa says:

I love this! I wrote down what you said, love someone by thinking about what they need.

      1. Carly says:

        Where was that originally written?

          In Jennie’s comment…

  235. veritas1201 says:

Hooray, first comment! I guess staying up late to get a head start on my week's to do list is paying off.
I am so very excited for this study because I feel like there is ample opportunity for practical application. Although I am curious to see what my take away will be, since I am still without a home where I feel these kinds of pressures.
The passages are a great way of reassessing what is important in a welcoming spirit. So often we see Jesus saying it isn't want our initial instincts lead us to, like the story of Mary and Martha.
Eagerly looking ahead to what is coming in this study.

    1. SheReadsTruth says:

Woohoo! First comment! So thankful you're joining us, friend! Expecting God to do big things in this study!
