Text: Nehemiah 6:15-7:72, Ephesians 4:16

Remember that rhyme from childhood – “Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors, and see all the people”?

This work is done! The wall is finished. So what does Nehemiah do? He gathered the people that they might be “reckoned by genealogy” (ESV). He takes count, he notices. He lists those exiled, the people who had been forgotten by the world and seen as abandoned by God. He lists every good and perfect gift that God has seen and purposed and used to protect and rebuild the city. If this portion of Nehemiah is about reinstructing, I think it is so incredibly significant that it starts with naming and seeing people.

Ephesians four tells us that when we are working properly together, the body grows and builds itself up. THIS is reinstructing we probably all need to do. This work of turning inward to our respective communities and seeing one another, the way the Lord sees us, as good and perfect gifts that are needed and valuable and working together in a way that brings Him glory and is for the good of us all.

Notice what Nehemiah says about the city size as compared to the people’s size? The city is wide and large, but the people are few. I don’t think it was a jab at the people, that’s not Nehemiah’s style. I think it was more to say – look what this smallish group of people has accomplished on a massive and large scale? Look what they’ve done. Look what you’ve done. There is such beauty being lost in a team, in a people. There is such grace in stopping to see the people around you, thanking God for them, and moving forward – together.

Father, help us to see one another, covered in the blood of Jesus, as you see us – joints equipped for their individual works that help the whole body work and grow the way it was created to.

Nehemiah | Day 9 | I Cannot Go Down

22 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 6:1-14 I thought I knew all about determination in my life.  Earning that degree.  Passing that Bar. Getting that job.  Birthing that child (after 32 hours and a defunct epidural.  Sorry, it bore mention.). Sure things weren’t easy, and it was a lot of hard work.  But the only true barrier between me [...]

Nehemiah | Day 8 | Life goes on in the midst of rebuilding

21 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 5 What we see in Nehemiah chapter five is that even though God’s people were endeavoring to do this massive work, life was still going on and everyday struggles amassed around them. When the farmers were rebuilding a wall, what would become of their crops? In a city that stood defenseless and sad [...]

Nehemiah | Day 7 | The Gift of Friendship to Accomplish God’s Work

20 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 4:15-23, Proverbs 11:14, Hebrews 10:24-25 Nehemiah may not strike you as a story that deals with relationships, but at the core of this book is a powerful message about God’s children working together to accomplish a holy purpose. In this case, it was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, all while preparing for a [...]

Nehemiah | Day 6 | Weekly Truth

19 May 2013

Today, as a body of women, let’s meditate on and memorize God’s word. Not for our own glory or honor, but for the joy of our Father and the growth of His Truth in our hearts. “And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10b

Nehemiah | Day 5 | Building with One Hand and Bracing with the Other

18 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 4:1-14, 1 Chr 29:11 We’ve seen that Nehemiah faced his share of opposition from early on when he set out to rebuild the wall. Even before he started building, there were the naysayers, the doubters and the discouragers.  Those of us who have stepped out in faith to do something a little less than [...]

Nehemiah | Day 4 | And so and so and so and so and YOU.

17 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 3, John 9, Acts 3, Ephesians 4:16 This, is the good part. Don’t glaze over it. If you’ve spent any length of the Old Testament, you know that sometimes there are just chunks of names and names and names and names. You can skip today, you can skim for baby names for your [...]

Nehemiah | Day 3 | Just Do It

16 May 2013

Text: Nehemiah 2:9-20 Knowing God’s will for our lives can be tricky.  I’ll admit, I’ve tried to circumvent the process a time or two.  (If you happen to check my browser history, please ignore the Google search, “How do I know God’s will for my life?”  And please also ignore anything having to do with [...]

Today we will see Nehemiah’s courage and, most importantly, his [...]

Nehemiah | Day 1 | Trouble and Shame

14 May 2013

[You can find the new Nehemiah plan on YouVersion by clicking here!] Intro I know. Another Old Testament prophet. But, if you felt like the text in Hosea was challenging, you’ll be pleased to know that things move a little more smoothly in Nehemiah. Still, thirteen chapters about rebuilding a wall might feel potentially tedious [...]
