BY She Reads Truth

The book of Proverbs is a guide for pursuing godly wisdom in our daily lives. In this four-week study, we will read a selection of topical proverbs covering different aspects of wisdom, from how to interact with our friends, families, and neighbors, to fearing God and keeping His commands. No matter the subject, these proverbs urge us to wrestle with and reflect on our own response to them. To help you better engage with the proverbs in this reading plan, we have provided you with a short introduction and reflection questions for each day.

One of the overarching themes of the Bible is the astonishing love of God toward rebellious and sinful people. This aspect of God’s nature plays out in every setting and circumstance, including in our broken world. To truly know God—and, therefore, to truly walk in wisdom—we must not only know what God loves, but also what He hates.

Reflection Questions:

Why do you think there are proverbs that talk about what God hates? Why is this important for us to know?

God hates sin but loves the people He has created. When you are sinned against or are a witness to sin, is hatred something that rises up in you? Why do you think that?

Read Proverbs 28:9. What does the first half of this verse have to do with the second?

    Amen

  2. Joyce Walker says:

We are Gods children and as our Father obedience is what we as His children should always strive to obey our Father.

  3. Brandy Deruso says:

Lord let me grow in you and be as you need me to be lord i thank you lord and humble myself before you cleanse me oh lord so that i may not sin against thee! Amen!

  4. Karen Friesen says:

Love the insights you are sharing. I think it is also good to know what God hates, because if you do the opposite it will be what he loves! If he hates lying, tell the truth, etc. It’s what I would tell my kids when they were little, “if you know something is bad, do the opposite.”

  5. Rachel Nagy says:

I think knowing what God hates helps us walk even deeper in his love. When you love someone, when you have a relationship, you don’t purposefully do things you know they hate, or when you do, there is a compulsion to confess and ask forgiveness. This is the same with God. There is a relationship that thrives on loving one another and by doing something the Lord hates, that relationship is damaged until forgiveness is asked for.

  6. Jen Brewer says:

    Well said. Amen!

  7. Kathy Mueller says:

Proverbs 28:9 reminded me of the story of Henny Penny when she needed to bake the bread and no one would help but everyone wanted to eat the bread. I know we don’t need to help God, but we want all the benefits, all the blessings, without truly putting in the work and “pursuing righteousness.” (Proverbs 15:9)

  8. Catherine Ryberg says:

These verses helped me a lot to learn what NOT to do to be more like Jesus. It’s almost like hearing what God hates gives more gravity to my behavior and actions that resemble what he hates.
