The Narrow Way

Luke 13:1-35, Deuteronomy 4:32-40, 1 John 2:1-6

Scripture Reading: Luke 13:1-35, Deuteronomy 4:32-40, 1 John 2:1-6

Many of us picture our Lord and Savior with arms wide open to the masses, receiving all those who choose to follow Him. And yes, this is true. Scripture tells us that whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life (John 3:16) and that it is by faith, not by works, that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8–9). We cannot earn our way to salvation—we are saved through faith alone.

And also, Scripture teaches that there is a narrow door leading to eternal life with God (Luke 13:24) and that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). Jesus Himself shares the sobering reality that many will call to Him in the end and He will respond, “I don’t know you…” (Luke 13:25).

So where is the gap between those who think they know Jesus and those who truly know Him? How do I know if I am entering through the narrow door?

In Luke 13, Jesus shared a parable of a barren fig tree to illustrate a profound truth: Where there is no fruit, there is no substance. The tree is symbolic of a person who is not submitted to God or in relationship with Him. They are living for themselves, with no purpose. They just exist, not abiding in Christ and not in active participation of yielding to their Creator.

Jesus said the door is narrow because many want to enter but few actually choose to submit to our Savior. Many desire the benefits of the kingdom but without the King. They want the favor, blessings, and gifts He gives without faithful obedience. They want the seeming ease of going their own way on their own terms, the appearance of holiness without laying their lives down. Like the barren fig tree, it leaves them empty, without fruit.

First John 2:3 says, “This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands.” Choosing to know Jesus deeply and submit to His work in your heart and life is to enter by the narrow door. It is not popular or glamorous, and it will come with the discomfort of yielding to Christ over your own desires. But in this holy effort, you will see evidence of fruit as you grow, wrestle, and ultimately flourish in your walk with Him.

You and I have a choice. We can choose to live for ourselves, knowing God exists but never fully submitting to Him. Or we can choose to surrender to God, abide in Him, and keep His commands. Through His refinement and by the power of His Spirit, our lives will bear fruit (Galatians 5:22–23).

The door to eternal life may be narrow, but it is always open to all who choose Jesus. He is here, ready and willing to receive all who choose to enter.

Good morning, precious sisters! I came back yesterday and read a few days and then caught up today. Thank you all for your prayers and words of encouragement! My left arm is in a very heavy metal contraption and is completely out of use. This is really hard for an independent person like me. Hopefully when I go back to the surgeon (no appointment yet) they will put me in something that is a bit more manageable. My pain is much better but my discomfort is through the roof. Love and hugs to all! I am praying for all of your requests. ❤️

These notes from Enduring Word reflect some of my focus from today’s reading:
“iii. Strive to enter through the narrow gate isn’t a call to save yourself by good works. Good works aren’t the right gate. One may strive to enter all life long, but if it isn’t at the right gate, it makes no difference. Jesus Himself is the gate; He is the door.

iv. It is necessary to strive to enter because there are many obstacles in the way. The world is an obstacle. The devil is an obstacle. Probably the worst obstacle is our own flesh.

    i. ‘You will see a considerable difference between seeking and striving. You are not merely advised to seek; you are urgently bidden to strive.’ (Spurgeon)

ii. Jesus previously spoke of the narrow door; here He warned of the shut…door. ‘Our Lord showed that there are limits to the divine mercy, that there will be those who will not be able to enter in.’ (Morgan)
    .
These verses also came to mind in my reflection this morning:
    Psalm 51:10-
Create in me a clean heart,
    O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
    Ezekiel 36:26-
26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.
    .
It’s an individual choice/decision to examine our hearts and lives.
Heavy stuff today, but praise God for the HOPE we have as we focus on the “prize before us”!
    .
    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

This reading is so emotional for me this morning (perhaps ANY reading would have been)….as I just found out last night that a cousin I love so much is most likely an Atheist and not really a seeker in general. One of the beautiful things about her is that she is “chill” easygoing, not easily riled up / shaken, even keel (you get the picture) which makes her a wonderful human being and therapist (because she also has a TON of understanding, self-reflection and compassion) BUT…it also means the whole need for a Saviour/ meaning in God is not there…. there’s no stirring inside her content self!!

I’m praying He moves mightily in her and her husband. They are people who would make “amazing Christians” because they are effortlessly so good, kind, right, fair,…all the yummy things!! But not for His glory!! Imagine if they did it with the Spirit of God — WOW, watch out world!!!

    ***

The reading is also emotional because it makes me examine myself…that’s the best kind of Devo, ain’t it?!

    **
Praying for each of you, our prodigals and our “non-seekers”.

    1. Tina says:

Foster Mama, the whole need for a saviour is not there ..YET! There will come a time when all this ‘chill’ attitude will not cut it, She will cry out to God one of those easy going days, for now i join you in praying for her and her husband.,
The wonderfulmthing is God has not forsaken them, and they will experience His grace and love and mercy and forgiveness and more, one of the days. Sending you hugs my dear, it is well.. BUT GOD..❤️❤️

  9. Traci Gendron says:

I’m not comparing my husband to Jesus at all, but I have a story that popped in my head while reading the devotional.
    ~
There is so much hatred out there for the successful. My husband once said that they all want my money, but would never do the work that it required to receive it. And as a side note he also told me he enjoyed his career so much that he would have done it for free. I can attest that these positions require a lot out of you. Just as Jesus requires obedience from us. I don’t want to just sneak through the narrow door. I choose to surrender to God.

Dear She’s, We received wonderful news at the cardiologist yesterday! First Tom got the echocardiogram. Next was the Dr visit. The Dr walked in and said you can take that life vest off and send it back. He said his heart was 100%! There were no signs he even had a widow maker heart attack! Resume life, lift weights. In the middle of him telling us, Tom pulled off his shirt and took the life vest off. Dr laughed and said, you really don’t like that thing. He is to stay on meds and keep going to cardiac rehab. We go back in 6 months for a chemical stress test. If he passes that, no other procedures. If not, he will schedule addition stents. There were tears and overwhelming gratitude to our Lord!

What a refreshing a straightforward devotional! As Christians, we have to submit to Jesus and his ways, not ours. For so long, I claimed Jesus (because who doesn’t want Heaven!), as my Saviour, but he was not Lord of my life. I was Lord of my life!
But that is not it. And it is why we lost respect as a whole to non-believers and called hypocrites like the Pharisees. We show our love for Jesus by our works. The fruit our life shows. Not sinless perfection, but by all means not practicing sin knowingly. We should all be asking the Lord to convict us when we are not in His will. When we seek we find.
It is not easy to follow Jesus, but it is so beautiful. We mustn’t grow stagnant or comfortable. We must have disciplines that help us grow! And sharing the beauty of a relationship with him with others. Also sharing that there are two destinations after this life. No one likes to talk about hell, but Jesus did because it is imperative that people know! How can we not warn? Especially the people we love!?

    1. Traci Gendron says:

Rhonda I do pray that God will convict me of sins that I’m not paying attention to or aware of. I’ve noticed being convicted when watching something on tv that goes in a direction that I don’t want to see.

  15. Cheryl Blow says:

Everyone’s insight is so great! It is a narrow door but It is a welcoming door. All we have to do is follow Jesus through it. Follow His example and share Him with others! Should’ve w His love. Since I serve with 2-3’s, I’m always reminding them sharing is caring. If we truly care about the lost, we will share Jesus with them.

    Reminds me of this song!

Your word is a lamp unto my feet
Your way is the only way for me
It’s a narrow road that leads to life
But I want to be on it
It’s a narrow road and the mercy’s wide
‘Cause Your good on Your promise
I’ll take You at Your word
If You said it, I’ll believe it
I’ve seen how good it works
If You start it You’ll complete it
I’ll take You at Your word
You spoke and the chaos fell in line
I know ’cause I’ve seen it in my life
It’s a narrow road that leads to life
But I want to be on it, yeah
It’s a narrow road and the tide is high
    But You parted the waters
I’ll take You at Your word
If You said it, I’ll believe it
I’ve seen how good it works
If You start it, You’ll complete it
I’ll take You at Your word
If You said it, I’ll believe it
I’ve seen how good it works
If You start it, You’ll complete it
I’ll take You at Your word
    You’re good on Your promise
    You said Your love
    Will never give up
    You said Your grace
    Is always enough
    You said Your heart
Would never forget or forsake me (hallelujah)
    Oh, You said I’m saved
    You call me Yours
    You said my future’s
    Full of Your hope
    You’ve never failed
So I know that You’ll never fail me
I’ll take You at Your word
If You said it, I’ll believe it
I’ve seen how good it works
If You start it, You’ll complete it
I’ll take You at Your word
If You said it, I’ll believe it
I’ve seen how good it works
If You start it, You’ll complete it
I’ll take You at Your word
    You’re good on Your promise
I’ll take You at Your word

  16. Searching says:

Just looked at the clock and realized I have been writing my comment for over 2 hours. My apologies for the length today.
    .
I read the title of today’s devo and shook my head, thinking of how difficult it can seem/be to live and walk the narrow way even though that’s where the joy is. There is a constant pull by the world and our own sinful hearts that tries and sometimes succeeds in pulling us away from that narrow way. Let’s stay on His path, sisters.
    .
Where is this narrow way? It’s Jesus, John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
    .
How can I find Jesus? Seek Him, He’s waiting for you right now offering the gift of salvation, bringing eternal life with Him in heaven.
    .
Jeremiah 29:13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
    .
James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
    .
Matthew 7:8 “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” Jesus
    .
Isaiah 55:6 Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.
    .
Acts 4:12 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
    .
What’s the next step when I find Him? Believe in Him and repent of your sins.
    .
Acts 16:30-31 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
    .
Matthew. 3:2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” John the Baptist
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
    .
Then what? Follow Jesus as you walk the narrow way. When you see alternate paths, ask yourself What would Jesus do? Which way would He go?
    .
Matthew 4:19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
    .
Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
    .
John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
    .
Reminded of Jesus Is Calling, Fannie Crosby, 1883, and Jesus Is Calling, Hank Williams Sr & Charlie Monroe.
    From the latter:
When your soul is weary and it seems you’ve lost your way
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
When you need a friend to go with you all the way
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
And you will hear Him if you’ll just pray
Calling for you (my brother) don’t turn away (from Jesus)
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
If you’re lost in sin. there’s no need for you to stay
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
If the night is dark, you will soon see the day
Jesus is calling, calling night and day
    .
    Every night and every day.
    .
Continuing to pray for the lost!

‘Today, recognize and keep in mind that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other. Keep his statutes and commands,…Deut 4:9-10a

“we can choose to surrender to God, abide in Him, and keep His commands”

Our passaages this morning all have a parallel to the Shema in Deut 6. There is nothing more important than loving God, keeping His commands and serving Him with obedience, surrender and submission. We can’t just have the title of Christian without evidence of that in our lives and seeking to bear fruit. He has shown us the Way and we need to walk in it. It is a scary thought to think that it is such a fine line (narrow gate) and that people are deceiving themselves in thinking they can live however they please or for those that have completely turned from the Lord.

The last sentence from the devotional today is of great comfort “The door to eternal life may be narrow, but it is always open to all who choose Jesus. He is here, ready and willing to receive all who choose to enter.”

Thank you Lord that you have shown us the Way, the Truth and the Life and that we can come to our Heavenly Father. Help us to surrender and walk in faithful obedience to you. We pray for those who are far away, who are trying to do it on their own or who are so lost them. Soften their hearts Lord, help them to hear your voice and draw their to you. Amen

The responses and thoughts from this week have been so helpful as we study the book of Luke. I just haven’t had the time to reply or respond to many but what a richness to learn with all of you ladies.

SRT sisters, thank you so much for your words of encouragement and prayers. Getting Mom moved and settled in itself went well and she is happy and peaceful in her new surroundings. However, multiple things within the day were stressful and problematic including our vehicle breaking down and leaving us stranded. Ughh. Again, very concerned for my husband and appreciate your prayers so, so much.❤️
    Have a great day:)

Wendy, I prayed for your family again before getting up this morning. I am so sorry for the additional stress on all of you. I join you in prayer for your husband’s stress level. Is there any way he could take a long weekend? I pray you’re doing okay after all of this. How ling before your next injection? ❤❤❤

      1. Wendy B says:

Thank you CeeGee. It is not easy for my husband to step away from his job or responsibilities. A little hard to fully explain here, but he is legally obligated to be accessible 24/7 for his job. And he/we are the only family close by for his parents. His brothers are +1 hour away. We are planning to get away for 4 days in a couple weeks but his phone has to be on.
My treatment injections are every 30 days, so next one is 25 days from today.

This terrifies me, not for myself but for those I know and love (namely my two prodigal sons, Nicholas & Jonathan). I can not bear to even think of what it will be like for them to stand before God if they have not turned to Him, and to hear His final words.
    .
My heart aches for my sons and for all the prodigals that we pray for here at SRT.
    .
This is my continuing prayer for all our prodigals and for this lost world: that God would, “open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” Acts 26:18
    .
“The door to eternal life may be narrow, but it is always open to all who choose Jesus. He is here, ready and willing to receive all who choose to enter.” Amen!!

I found it intriguing that on day 18 we read back to back stories that referenced the number 18. There were 18 crushed by the tower. And then the woman was bent over with a spirit of infirmity for 18 years. It made me think back to Jarius daughter who had died being 12 and then the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years reaching out being healed in that same passage. The repeating connections of these stories. It makes me think about the divine timing of the Lord. I don’t believe in coincidences. I don’t think it’s by “chance” that on day 18 we read these stories where Jesus back to back mentions 18. In Hebrew, number 18 means life. He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever. I just want to encourage anyone needing His touch today – He’s here. When He steps into the story of our lives, He sets us upright. No matter how downcast your soul, He’s here. And just like He lifted that woman up, He’s here to do it again. My commentary said, “The woman went to the synagogue for 18 years and remained in bondage, until she met Jesus at the synagogue.” We can go to church all of our lives but it’s not until we finally meet Jesus that He sits us up. We recognize our neediness… Bent over by pain. Bent over by fear. Bent over by depression. Bent over by grief. Bent over by anxiety. Bent over and not able to raise ourselves up. Until the touch of Jesus changes everything. Meeting Jesus changes everything. He sits us upright. He lifts our downcast soul. Morning by morning in Hjs Presence, He lifts me. He is the lifter of my head. No one else is capable of such a thing. Only the touch of Jesus. He does what no one else can do. And Hjs Presence becomes your greatest desire. The One Thing that you seek. Needy everyday for a fresh touch from Jesus. Unable to live without His Holy Presence. Where He becomes your very life and all that you want. Jesus changes everything.

Oh this is good Brittany!! Thank you for that!! How quickly we read through and don’t meditate on it’s meaning!! I thought about it saying that it was a bad spirit making her bent over, being a physical ailment. I thought instantly of my crooked spine since birth…of how amazing it would be to be healed! But our ailment is spiritual- and more important than our outward body.

1 John 2:6 – The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked. This verse stood out to me so I looked up a list of similar ones.

    * John 13:15 — “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
    * John 15:10 — “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love…”
    * 1 Corinthians 11:1 — “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
    * Ephesians 5:1–2 — “Follow God’s example… and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us.”
    * Philippians 2:5 — “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”
    * Colossians 3:12–14 — Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love.
    * 1 Peter 2:21 — “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.”
    * 1 John 3:16 — “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
    * 1 John 3:18 — “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Lord I pray that you would strengthen me/us to live like you live, to love like you love. Amen. Have a blessed day ladies.

“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door“
    .
This brought to mind that sometimes you need to turn and walk sideways to fit through a narrow door…Do we not need to turn and walk a different way to go through Jesus’ door?
    .
“Jesus said the door is narrow because many want to enter but few actually choose to submit to our Savior. Many desire the benefits of the kingdom but without the King. They want the favor, blessings, and gifts He gives without faithful obedience. They want the seeming ease of going their own way on their own terms, the appearance of holiness without laying their lives down. Like the barren fig tree, it leaves them empty, without fruit.” Great summary, SARAH WOOD
    .
    Praying for your requests.
    .
    Have a blessed day❣️

    What truth you write/you speak.
    .
The narrow door is always hard. though it shouldn’t be, it often is. Let’s face it, oftentimes the easy way always looks easier, in a world now run with ‘order today, receive tomorrow, or if you truly need it for extra we can deliver today!’
    .
We move on the fast track of life, i remember writing letters, now it’s an email..
I remember dialing a number, putting my index finger through a circle and turning to the end, removing finger for the circle to reset, then again until I had done the full number..now literally you press a button on speed dial..
I could go on.. really what I’m trying to say is, easy or quick is our life these days, microwave meals popped into my
    head, lol,..
    .
    BUT GOD..
    .
The narrow way, yes, though it may be hard, take longer, cause us think long and hard, it is and should be the choice we make daily.. it should be what we choose daily, what we aim for daily.
    .
GODS way, is the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, He will never fail us, as we lay down our lives to follow truthfully, faithfully and willingly..
    .
    It is well.
    .
    Let it be so.
    .
May it be so, for each one of us , Lord, in your mercy hear our prayers.. in Jesus’s name we pray..
    .
    AMEN.
    .
    .
Happy Thursday, my dears, covered in much warming love and hugs and prayers, requested or felt fo pray.

    3. Lanie H says:

oh yes! good analogy! I never thought of it but a narrow door requires a single file line, order, and waiting your turn to get in. A wide door everyone could run through at once. I’ve always looked at the narrow door as exclusivity and read this passage as just not as many people get to go through, but now I see what you’re seeing here, the narrow way, the line is available. it’s not that they don’t want to ride the ride it’s just that most people just don’t want to wait. They want to buy the fast pass and skip the line.
