Today I read Hebrews 11 (in my new SRT bible!!!) and was once again overwhelmed by the POWER that comes from faith. Through faith people fought for justice, won wars, saw the dead raised to life, shut the mouths of lions, walked through fire. I think as much as we need to ask for God’s miracles in faith, we also need to faithfully ask for strength to walk through the things He doesn’t make move or disappear. Sometimes I don’t need to make the mountain move, I just need God to give me the faith to know I can climb over it.

This is exactly what I need to remember. From cancer, to job loss, to alcoholism, my family has been tested. My mountains haven’t been moved but I’ve tried to put my faith in Him to climb over them. Thank you!-

Thanks for sharing your thoughts – I wrote down “Sometimes I dont’ need to make the mountain move, I just need God to give me the faith to know I can climb over it” in my journal. You hit the nail on the head here!! It’s so so so true! What speaks to me the most in the recent study days are the words FAITH and BELIEVE with your whole heart. Amen!

My husband has asked for a divorce and has left the home we share with our two little ones. He is dead set on a divorce. I am praying that God will give my family a miracle because we need my husband. I have to surrender to God nearly every minute. May he remove the doubt and anguish from my heart and mind.

Oh my goodness. I am praying that God will enter into this space. That the Holy Spirit would reside in the space of your home, your relationships, and everything in between. My first crisis of faith came at age 5. After hearing this verse in Sunday School, I recall standing next to my parents in the parking lot after church and looking toward the San Gabriel mountains. I had faith and I prayed that the mountains be removed. Of course, they were not. How childish — and childlike– to do such a thing. Imagine if God would have honored my faith! All of Southern California would have fallen into the Pacific. Oh to have the faith of a child yet the wisdom to understand that sometimes God doesn’t answer those petitions because of the negative impact on others.

This scripture reminds me of a powerful story I heard from Sarah Bessey.
She told of a town in Haiti in which they DESPERATELY needed to build a school for the orphans after the earthquake. A local pastor had turned his house into an orphanage, and he had some space in his backyard in which they could build a school (ideal because they could keep the children close and safe) – but it was on the side of a mountain, and the land was an unusable slope of stone and clay. Excavating was going to be too expensive and there were too few workers.
Enter one man. A local 60 year old man, who showed up with a pickax, a shovel, and a bucket. He began to work, every day, to move the mountain literally stone by stone, pebble by pebble, digging in the heat and for only lunch as payment. He single-handedly dismantled that mountain and smoothed out the ground.
Today, that school has 250 children. That mountain moved, and now stands a classroom.
Sometimes we ask Christ to move mountains – and sometimes Christ asks us to have the faith to move them with Him. I’ve found that sometimes radical faith means waiting in quiet submission, but sometimes it means rolling up my sleeves and doing really hard hard work – in my own heart or in the world around me.
Today I am so grateful for Christ’s hands on mine, working stone by stone to dismantle the mountains that exist in my life, to do the hard work of bringing His Kingdom right here, right now.

I am so broken by this passage. I want so much to see my family saved but doubt… I want so much to see my brother healed from epilepsy…but doubt. Lord help me to trust you and have faith that can move mountains.

I can’t imagine ever asking that a mountain be thrown in the sea. First, why would I want to do that? And secondly, I can’t imagine believing that would actually happen. And isn’t that just the crux of what Jesus is addressing here – my doubt? My incredulousness that such a thing could be done. The point seems to not concentrate on getting the mountain to move but to remove doubt before the asking. To honestly evaluate my level of faith. To honestly evaluate the power of God. With God all things are possible. All things. It’s even possible to have mountain moving faith. Imagine that.

My problems are like immovable mountains, impossible situations but God….I need the faith to look at the mountain with God’s eye, the faith to believe He has got this. All things are possible. Please help my unbelief.

Churchmouse, I’ve thought the same thing! I live in Alaska & see mountains every direction I turn – they are beautiful! Why would I want to change the marvelous view? However, I have wondered (& since decided) He wasn’t talking about literal mountains of dirt but mountains of emotions, circumstances, and consequences from others’ sin (etc, those were just the first three to come to mind) we will experience in life on earth. Each of which can be so very overwhelming – those we can cast into the sea.
He will take care of us – He promises.
He will be faithful – He promises.
We can trust Him fully – He has already proved this by sending Jesus to cover every sin with his blood.
I’m not saying the consequences of our own sins are less mountainous, but we tend to easily accept those consequences as our “deserved punishment” (a lie – not how God operates). But when someone else sins and we reap consequences from their sin – it’s “not fair” and can tangle up our minds in other ways too. Those tangled webs of emotions/circumstances/consequences we are to cast into the sea & focus on our loving Heavenly Father. When we focus on Him, then we can’t focus on [whatever the current mountain is].-
