The Second Sunday of Advent

Open Your Bible

Zechariah 9:9

In this second week of Advent, the story of God’s people continues as He provided again and again for Israel, even as they spiraled further and further into darkness. As God raised up priests and kings to guide His people and prophets to call them back from the brink, the people of God were desperate for the promised leader who would fully and finally rescue them from their enemies.

As we read of God’s people turning ever toward the darkness, we’ll cling to the promise of one who would come as the perfect ruler and rescuer of His people forever.

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem!
Look, your King is coming to you;
he is righteous and victorious,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
—Zechariah 9:9

Jesús entering the world in a stable in a small town, having no where to lay his head while on earth, entering Jerusalem on a donkey, hanging on the cross for all to see.

Our King doesn’t demand we pay attention to Him. He doesn’t try to win us over with materialism. He is humble, gentle, patient, and kind!

We love because He first loved us. Thank you, Jesus, for being obedient to the father and for being love in the flesh. For being our ultimate sacrifice. For dying for us while we were still sinners. For your kindness leading to repentance. For your yoke being easy and your burden being light. We love you!

Heavenly Father, we rejoice greatly, we shout in triumph, our King is coming, he is righteous, and victorious, humble and we praise you on this second Sunday of Advent that you are our Prince of Peace. Amen

“…the people of God were desperate for the promised leader who would fully and finally rescue them from their enemies.”
    .
What God’s people failed to recognize that the greatest enemy they needed rescuing from was their sin.
    .
May the eyes of the lost be opened so that they too will see sin as their enemy and turn to the One who can wash it all away by His blood.
    .
King – Jesus – Savior – Light of the World
    .
    Even so Lord Jesus, come.

    Happy Lord’s Day She’s. ❤️

  28. Raven Green says:

Zechariah is a Hebrew name meaning “Yahweh remembers”, this caught me this morning, as I read our passage. We can eagerly await his coming in glory, because we have confidence that HE knows & remembers his people. Thank you, Lord!

  29. Glory Smith says:

    Amen!

  30. Adrienne says:

We normally focus on His humbleness and riding on a donkey during Lent. Let’s remember this at this time too, dear sisters! He came to save us. I know we all look forward to that second coming, when He defeats the darkness!

  33. Rhonda J. says:

Rejoice! Our Savior came just like prophesied hundreds of years before! And will come again just like it has been told!! God’s word is truth, dependable, living, moving and acting!

Jesus is truth. Light in our darkness! Hope in a fallen, tragic, scary, depressing world. Just like the Israelites, America started this nation strong, with devotion to God. Yet here we are, almost unrecognizable. Wanting freedom to chose as we want, our own truth..which leads to the fall and destruction. We don’t even realize it, staying to occupied and busy by life, Christians, the gate keepers, have slacked in a big way. We have ourselves, slackened the rope around our families, slowly losing our fire for God, and have become tepid. We are neither hot nor cold, we might go to church or not, we put sports and recreation ahead. We prioritize all wrong. He went to the cross for us, and we don’t want to be inconvenienced. It makes me sad. Father God, I’m so sorry that it took me so long to put you back on my throne, my alter! I was a shallow believer, chirping faith, but not living as if! The thought that he came for me, the so, so lost sheep, is overwhelming. That I was a prodigal daughter and you ran to me with a robe, ring, and prepared the feast. And I still take it for granted! I humblely repent, and put you first, and surrender to you, my Lord, King, and Savior Almighty!!

I got to talk to my nephew last night! He wanted to tell me he had a cell mate that was a new Christian, (just what I had prayed for! Thank you Lord!) He said he actually told this new Christian about the story of Joseph and that they decided to read it together! (Remember my nephew is “not sold” on the whole “Christian” thing!) He likes to debate, although he told me last night he doesn’t do that anymore and talked of the night where he had debated me about it! (remember I share how upsetting it was with ya’ll! Because he has read the Bible all the way through) I have written him over the weeks and have told him of all the things Jesus is doing in my life through jail ministry and even homeless, and in my earlier life (divorce and sharing a child which he does) He said he loves reading them (he rarely replies, so glad he told me)! So pray with me She’s for my nephew Christian to, well, become just that! And for protection around him, and to God to keep revealing himself to him! Thank you! Also if you could keep praying for my Butterfly Tosha that has court Wed (life or death court!)
Have a great second Sunday Advent worshiping the Messiah!! The Prince of Peace!!

    1. Cee Gee says:

Rhonda, I listened to a song this morning that I thought you’d like for your butterflies. It was the first song I saw in the grid! It’s Dear Jesus by We the Kingdom.

I do remember your sharing that! How encouraging to hear of the transformation in your nephew’s thinking. Praying God works wonders in him while he is in this place! ❤

      1. Rhonda J. says:

I just heard/watched that video King Jesus last night!! I didn’t look at the lyrics, so I will watch again today! Thank you friend!! Thank you to keep praying for my nephew! (It reminds me a lot of Heidi praying for her niece)

        1. Cee Gee says:

❤ yes, I think of her often, too, and wonder how she’s doing.

    2. Searching says:

Praying for a turnaround in Christian’s heart, Rhonda. And with urgency, praying for Tosha and the upcoming court date.

    3. Rachel says:

Oh, it brought tears to my eyes when I read that God put that believer in with Christian! What a gift to both of them to be able to read and discuss together in that lonely place. Praying that the sweet truth of God’s word penetrates the darkness and Christian is set free – in every way. Also praying for Tosha. I can’t imagine waiting for a court date like that one.

      1. Rhonda J. says:

Thank you Rachel!! Isn’t that amazing! I was so afraid for him. If you could pray it happens again, he gets transferred to the long-term placement next week, and no one he knows is going there. Lord, I pray it is a decent place. He is a clean cut guy, first time offender yet, unbelievably got an unfair sentence. We thought it would be parole and community service but it was 4 years. :(

        Thank you Wendy

    4. Adrienne says:

Oh, wow… Christian’s new cell mate. Have been praying Christian will indeed become a Christian.

    5. Wendy B says:

A cell mate that loves Jesus! Only God. what encouraging news this is, Rhonda. Praying

      1. Rhonda J. says:

BUT..that cellie was moved before they finished! But all 3 have been good, but Christian will be moved next week…please keep asking God to keep working in him! I think he could be like — what’s the guy that was a detective and set out to prove wrong…the Case for Christ! That’s what I pray for Christian!

        Thank you Adrienne!!

        1. Cee Gee says:

          Lee Stroebel! ❤

  34. Cee Gee says:

Notes from Warren Wiersbe on v. 9:
This prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem on what we traditionally call Palm Sunday, and the event is recorded in all four gospels (Matt. 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:29–44; and John 12:12–19).
This is the only public demonstration Jesus allowed during His ministry, and He did it to fulfill Scripture.

The coming of God’s Son to this earth wasn’t heaven’s Plan B or a hasty decision by the Father after our first parents sinned. The plan of redemption was settled in eternity, before Creation. The coming of the Lamb of God was decided “before the foundation of the world” (1 Pet. 1:20), for He was “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Rev. 13:8).

According to MacArthur, the following verses refer to the 2nd advent, but they are too beautiful not to share!
    v.12-
Come back to the place of safety,
all you prisoners who still have hope!
    I promise this very day
that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.

    v.16-
Come back to the place of safety,
all you prisoners who still have hope!
    I promise this very day
that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.

Let’s worship Him today with sincerety, wonder, and awe!

    Love, hugs, and prayers! ❤

    1. Cee Gee says:

Forgot to share a song! Sharing this because I love Kim’s opening words. They speak of the humility mentioned in today’s verse.

More from the NET Bible’s study notes:
“The Hebrew term צַדִּיק (tsadiq) ordinarily translated “righteous,” frequently occurs, as here, with the idea of conforming to a standard or meeting certain criteria. The Messianic king riding into Jerusalem is fully qualified to take the Davidic throne.”
    ✨️
Thanks be to God that King Jesus did come for us and through His righteousness, we are victorious over sin.
