Day 42

Weekly Truth

from the Acts of the Apostles reading plan

Acts 17:29

BY She Reads Truth

Memorizing Scripture is one of the best ways to carry God-breathed truth, instruction, and reproof wherever we go.

As we’ve read through Acts, we have been memorizing a 6-verse passage, Acts 17:24-29, one verse at a time. This passage is from Paul’s eloquent yet succinct presentation of the gospel to the Greek philosophers at the Areopagus. This week, we’ve come to the last verse:

Being God’s offspring then, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.
–Acts 17:29

Write this verse down and post it on your mirror or at your desk, in your car or on the fridge—anywhere you’ll see it often. Save the image below as your phone’s lock screen so you can read these words of truth throughout the day.

We want to be a community that is intentional about scripture memorization. Will you join us?

I looked up Matthew Henry’s commentary for this verse and it really added some perspective:
“We are his offspring, formed by him, formed for him, more the care of his providence than ever any children were the care of their parents; and therefore are obliged to obey his commands, and acquiesce in his disposals, and to be unto him for a name and a praise. Since in him and upon him we live, we ought to live to him; since in him we move, we ought to move towards him; and since in him we have our being, and from him we receive all the supports and comforts of our being, we ought to consecrate our being to him, and to apply to him for a new being, a better being, an eternal well-being.”

In light of today’s Scripture, what then have I placed above the Divine? What have I placed above my devotion to Jesus? My computer? Pokémon Go? (ugh! No! ) My smartphone? Surely not these things made of mere gold or silver or stone! May it never be! I pray today, Lord, that You would call me out for making You less than anything else in my life. Forgive me. Set me straight as I set these things down. Amen.
