John 1:1-5

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

This week we will memorize John 1:2. In this verse John reaffirms that Jesus is God by proclaiming that He has always existed. His life did not begin at His birth on earth, but instead He has always been present as God, even at creation.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

Prayers! My family and I have gone through it. We had what we call COVID kits from frontline doctors that has medicine, antibiotics, etc. Best thing you can do, is trust in God and do not panic. There is no need to go to any hospital unless you’re struggling to breathe. If you can breathe just fine, then stay home and rest.

MY grandmother in law is 85- with the help of medicine she healed and is on the road to recovery!

Traci Gendron I totally agree with you about talking about memories of those who have past. I’ve found the younger they were when they past away the hard it is for people to talk about them. My family and friends, especially family, have no problem talking about my parents who have past away but when I start to talk about my son and some of my memories of him they hesitate. I enjoy talking about him. I loved him and want to keep his memory alive. So Traci and Tina and all you others who have lost someone at a young age and people hesitate to talk about them, go ahead and keep their memory alive. George was a vibrant young boy who loved life and God and Christ.

Sisters prayers are needed my way. I found out yesterday while working that Finley, the little girl I care for, is positive for COVID. So what I’ve been thinking are persistent allergy symptoms may in fact be in part something else. Finley’s mom, Monica has had a cough also that she can’t get rid of. Finley’s dad, Chad and sister, Kyla, so far are asymptomatic. Thank you for all the prayers you do send out.
Sisters be blessed and stay strong.

I am currently battling chronic Lyme disease, and this has been the darkest and hardest time of my life. I am thankful for this study and for these verses as a reminder of how powerful the Lord is and that He goes before us and is in our past, present, and future. I truly believe he brings light into even the darkest and seemingly hopeless situations.

MARTHA, I have been doing EMDR and find it very helpful. May it be a balm to your soul and help you restore all the broken places. Recovering from PTSD myself, I have to remember that the Lord is the one who heals and he can use a variety of methods. We don’t have to fear being forgotten or choosing the right path(not that you stated that fear…I’m just speaking from my experience and hope it’s helpful)

  15. Victoria E says:

Churchmouse thanks for pointing that out I was just wondering why the repetition in verses 1 and 2! I wonder if Jesus was always plan A why did He even bother with the tree on the Garden of Eden? Just a thought. Martha Hix so glad to see your name here and that EMDR is working for you.

Also, I have memorized this passage in John many times, so I am committing it to memory in Spanish (my second language). Learning Scripture in another language really broadens your perspective on it and also helps you understand the difficulties translators face and how much our understanding of Scripture is affected by our language and culture.

Note: The Chosen also has a free app you can download and cast to your TV if you don’t want to buy the episodes. But you can donate to the creation of future episodes if you wish.

Julia Brown: You’ve been on my mind since your first post! As I mentioned back then, since you homeschool, you would definitely receive empathy, encouragement and possible resource ideas from HSLDA. If you haven’t sought them out, please try.

  19. Traci Gendron says:

MARTHA HIX – I had a counselor use EMDR years ago. The memory of my son on a gurney being wheeled down a hospital corridor was so fresh in my mind some 30 years later. It did help. Kind of amazing. I have found grief hard in the fact that it seems like some kind of taboo to so many. We want to talk about it. To talk about our loved one. Others seem uncomfortable with that. If they broke it down, they would realize we are talking about our loved one just as they would. They are not forgotten nor do we want them to be. Continued prayers sweet lady.

SARAH J – Your comment really spoke to me. I saw this verse in a different way through it. Thank you

  20. Traci Gendron says:

    Stay safe RHONDA J!

“He was with God in the beginning.” John 1:2. Jesus has always existed and is God. He did not begin with His birth on earth, but instead He has always been present as God, even at creation. Thank you SRT for this explanation.

@RACHEL HAUSSLER, praying for your sister.

Praying for the little one with FEBRILE seizures.

JULIA BROWN, I remember you well and have thought of you often, even though you haven’t posted often. Praying for you, for changes your actual situation, that God would see the beautiful intentions of your heart (e.g. not to compare your two girls) and honour them,…Lord, God only you truly know Julia and what is needed. Please hold her and hubby up and, as you see fit, change things.
Julia, I know that it isn’t additional labels / diagnoses that are lacking for your eldest but, I wonder if that would open additional doors / resources for her. I also wonder if there are professional or volunteer organizations in your area that provide respite for parents…even if it is someone e.g. who can take her out for a few hours weekly.

    I’m praying.

Truth! It shines so brightly in my heart through the time in the word this morning. ❤️

  27. Rhonda J. says:

Happy Sunday She’s! I’m staying home this morning with tornado warnings around us here in SW Florida.

I saw that The Chosen is now streaming on Prime (first season free, second season you have to buy right now). I would encourage you to watch it, it really brings all things we are studying in John to life.

Have a blessed Sunday. God’s got the whole world in His hands. In that alone, we can trust in this unpredictability of life.

  28. Sarah J says:

I don’t know how I didn’t know that Jesus was with God and was God for all time. For some reason I always thought God split into man at Jesus conception. This really helps me understand the Trinity and eternal nature of God in 3 separate forms.

  29. Maria Baer says:

I love that we continue the theme of light after that wonderful Advent study. And now in John this theme is carried through not just by describing Jesus as “The Light of the World,” but also sharing how he illuminates the world, and sharing his miracles and others teachings not found anywhere else in the Bible. I am so thankful that about 93% of John is original, meaning is not talked about in any other gospel or parts of the Bible. Thankful that John wrote this book so that we would have his accounts of these miracles and Jesus’ teachings.

  30. Nicole Firing says:

Jennifer these quotes were so beautiful! Thanks for sharing

  31. Julianne Pictou says:

John illuminates Jesus time here on earth in a new passionate light. In the beginning was the word, (Jesus). But then Jesus came down to earth to proclaim the (word/good news) message to all people. I never thought of Jesus like this before. I never seen him as the message, the word of the Lord. And I appreciate that John steps out of the gospels and has brought the reader this perspective.

  32. Ashley White says:

    Happy Sunday everyone ❤️

  33. Kathy says:

These verses made me think of 1 Peter 1:20. “He was foreknown before the foundation of the world…” This is the note I have written beside this verse:
“It’s difficult to grasp the reality of ‘before the foundation of the world’ but there was indeed a time before the Earth existed. And it’s even wilder to realize that before ‘In the beginning, God created…’ ever happened, ‘Surely I am coming soon’, had already been set in motion. “In the beginning was the Word’. The Word was Jesus – He was God and He was with God in the beginning. Jesus was never Plan B. He was always Plan A. He is the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together.”

  34. Ramona Como says:

Good morning from chilly Ohio. I am loving studying John. So many bits to bite into and so many similarities to the OT to compare. Have a blessed Sunday everyone. In Christian love sisters of the All mighty.

    Celebrate the LORD today, Shes.
    Psalm 146
    1 Hallelujah!
    My soul, praise the Lord.

    2 I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing to my God as long as I live.

3 Do not trust in nobles,
in a son of man, who cannot save.

4 When his breath leaves him,
    he returns to the ground;
on that day his plans die.

5 Happy is the one whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,

6 the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea and everything in them.
    He remains faithful forever,

7 executing justice for the exploited
and giving food to the hungry.
    The Lord frees prisoners.

8 The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord raises up those who are oppressed.
    The Lord loves the righteous.

9 The Lord protects resident aliens
and helps the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

    10 The Lord reigns forever;
Zion, your God reigns for all generations.

    Hallelujah!

  36. Jennifer Loves Jesus says:

I am so in love with Jesus. The Maker of all things came down so very low to save me from eternal darkness. Hung on a cross. I can do all things through Christ…
“John puts it all together: Jesus is none other than God’s creative, life-giving, light-giving Word. Jesus, the logos, who has come to earth in the flesh, is the power of God that created the world and the reason of God that sustains the world.”
    Douglas Mangum

  38. Churchmouse says:

Vs. 1 and 2 of John 1 show emphasis by repeating the same essential truth. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God…” And “He was with God in the beginning… ” Jesus’ sovereignty is established. His preeminence is noted. Come let us worship!

Thank you Victoria E for praying for me. It is such a comfort to me that you continue to lift me up in your prayers. Grief and loss is just hard and difficult to process. I did begin counseling and she uses EMDR to help trauma clients. Thank you so much. ❤️
