Day 14

Weekly Truth

from the Ecclesiastes reading plan

Ecclesiastes 5:18

BY She Reads Truth

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the good news of Jesus with us wherever we go.

This week we will memorize a verse from Ecclesiastes 5 about enjoying the life and work God has given us.

It is appropriate to eat, drink, and experience good in all the labor one does under the sun during the few days of his life God has given him.
—Ecclesiastes 5:18b

Lord, we know you hear us when we pray! We feel so stunned with current events, yet we know you are in control. Help Bessie’s friend Mel and her family cope with this cancer which looks destined to take her life. Be with Dorothy whose church in KC was damaged by riots. Be with and uphold Linda, Lord, and quell this righteous anger dwelling in our country now, and racial tensions and realities that have upended our society. Linda, know that those of us who aren’t African American long for all of us to be equitably considered Americans who strive for truth, safety, and respect for all people. MLK would be so grieved for the violence going on. Just give us all wisdom, and devote ourselves, as Churchmouse asks, to standing in the gap for this country.

    Love this verse.

  3. Linda says:

Tricia C it is awful what is going on in our country. The people who are trying to wreck havoc in our communities aren’t thinking about their actions being right or wrong. They are people who have no hope that they will see justice in their behalf. They feel that they have witnessed these incidents happen time and time again and many times the officers go free. So at this point they don’t care. I’m not trying to make excuses but I understand the anger because I am African American with an AA husband, sons in laws and grandsons etc. I don’t want their lives ended because someone doesn’t value their lives. I will be 70 years old in July and for the 1st time in my life I would be afraid if I were stopped by the police. It just seems like things go downhill quickly and then you end up with someone dead. We need healing and restoration in our country.

  5. DOROTHY says:

My sisters in Christ, I just read an email from my associate pastor that our church had some damage last night after rioting in our fair city of Kansas City. Please pray that this all settles down and no one else will be hurt.

  6. DOROTHY says:

King Solomon;s philosophy on life, I feel really leaves something to be desired. I believe you should be happy with your job but sometimes that isn’t possible. Sometimes our job may leave us feeling down or upset or who knows what. Not all the time can we be happy with what we do. There is always one constant though, we can always take our situation to the Lord and He will help us through it. He is always there with us. In the good times and the bad times.
Indiana Christina, I would have never looked at it in that viewpoint. Thanks for opening my eyes to a different way of seeing the verse.

Christina, indeed God has joy for us in all the little things in our days, in our work. The poetry of moments is lovely. Bessie, I am praying for Mel and her family, and for you. We know that our Lord is good, despite our circumstances, our struggles, or what is happening in the world that is so heartbreaking, we know Jesus that you are good, and we pray your grace, your mercy, your love over all the fear, the pain, the sorrow in this broken world and all of us broken beings Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. Though none of us deserve it you love us. Pour out your love Father God on us all. I praise you Lord for I know you make good come, you bring light in darkness. Hold Mel and her husband this day. Remind them you are right there with them and give them peace that surpasses understanding. Hold Bessie close, lighten her heart as you are walking beside her give her strength. Jesus you are mighty in power, your love is never ending. Help us to know you more, give us your words of hope and love. Amen.
